He's shown me the light!

This is the 2nd PM I've got from this guy, just thought I'd share because I find it kind of funny. Little bit of backstory, every time I or someone else mentions anything about a backlog in the XBL thread, he jumps in and mentions that having a backlog is stupid and a waste of money etc. He's not necessarily wrong, but I'll usually come back with something similar to "please don't tell us how to spend our hard earned money". Anyway, today he decided to take it to PM's.

Read from inside to out. Sorry it's kind of small, if you want to make it bigger right-click and open in a new tab/window.

Spoiler

So, do most of you guys here have backlogs? Mine's pretty big but I've gotten a lot better at only buying games I'm interested in playing (which unfortunately still covers a wide span of genres).

I'd respond to a troll like that with something like this:

My $60 spent gets me 6-15 games. I can pick them up at any time, any order, and just have fun and work through them at my own pace. Forget waiting on game release schedules.

Your $60 spent gets you 1 or 2 games, maaaaybe 3 games. Have fun twiddling your thumbs after that "big name" title you were anticipating lasts 4-8 hours and you are stuck waiting for the next game.

I see people hit the Amazon warehouse deals thread and be excited for that AAA title to hit $37-$47 a week or 2 after release. Have some restraint and wait for the deals! Personally I give myself 1-2 release titles a year, last year it was Borderlands 2 and I don't regret it. I regret the DLC but that's another story.

I like having a big library to pick from. Sure most of it is 1+ year old games, but they are still quality and I "missed" out on them when they were $40+. With much more variety I don't have to make dumb choices like "Should I play Metal of Honor or Battlefield", nice options there.
I have a bit of a backlog, but mostly due to PS+ and the free games or REAAAALLY great deals. It doesn't concern me what anyone else spends their money on, and it doesn't matter to anyone else what I spend my money on.

It's always hard to get all the games you want to play finished, but it's hard to pass up a really good deal since there is no guarantee it'll drop lower than that price.
Yeah, I think most CAGs eventually accumulate some sort of backlog. We love games, we love deals, so with all the deals to be found here, it just happens. Some people keep it mostly under control, maybe 5-10 games, some people get up into the hundreds. (I'm somewhere in-between) But I agree with 4thHorseman- why should it matter at all to anyone else how someone else spends their money? Someone only buys games if they're going to play them immediately? Awesome, enjoy! Someone else buys every game that goes on sale and has a mountain of games still in the shrinkwrap? Cool, go for it! What the hell do I care either way?
The guy's a fucking loser.
I'm always a bit surprised when someone around here _doesn't_ have a backlog. That generally means you have too much time to play games or you're missing out on a lot of neat experiences (if you like video games at all). Don't think there's an in between.

I think it's fucking funny when it devolves to PMs - then it's no longer public dick swinging and you _know_ it's really important for the other person to get their point across to you specifically. It really matters to him that you get his point. Ha!
Personally I have a HUGE backlog. Its because I am similar to you and have a tough time turning down cheap games. Hell I bought 3 3DS games because I plan on getting a 3DS at some point. Don't have it now but when do Nintendo 1st part games go on sale? So I bought it.

Honestly, if you spent your money on furries and other bullshit why would it matter to anyone else. That dude is just sad. So very sad. I hope he comes in the blog and says hi at some point.
I have a really shameful backlog. I know theres no chance I'll ever beat it all and I keep adding to it. I know it may be stupid but its not like Im spending a ton of money and I work hard for it, so nobody can tell me what I should do with it. What is crazy is that this guy took the time to pm you and start this up.
Hahaha, that's about all the response he warranted. I would have just responded with "Hahahah, shut the Fuck up."
Sounds like I'm exactly the same as a lot of you. I know my backlog is too big, but I rarely overpay for games. When you buy games on the cheap and then factor in resale value, you're really not paying a whole lot for games (except for digital, which I'm trying to build up more restraint with, even though I fucking love them!).

As for this guy, I was just ready to move on with my life after I read his first spiel and called him an idiot, but he kept pushing it so I figured I'd post it so he could be ridiculed a little bit more. He's currently going on in the XBL thread about the fact that he's amazed that people call themselves gamers without having played any of the Resident Evil games (apparently his name is from one of the first RE games...). He also recently said that old PS1 era games are completely unplayable, which was a pretty dumb comment.

@handsomepete - I agree, it's really funny when it gets to the point of PM'ing someone about a disagreement. I rarely get PMs here unless I'm trading codes, so when I saw I had one, and it was from him, I knew it was gonna be good!
I have a backlog too. It's more because I don't have time to play them all. I do agree that I've seen some people hoard some games like having 3 copies but that's not really related to having a backlog.
@tyler

I realized his name after you said it but didn't make the instant connection. (Considering Barry Burton can be a real name). Yes he is a character from RE1 that doesn't say much, the disappears. You get his gun if you beat the game in 6? hours if I remember right.

He then makes a cameo appearance at the end of RE 3 to rescue Jill in the helicopter. After that, Barry is a pretty much forgotten character.

But yes, I love video games. I also like collecting them and have no problem that I may have a hoarding problem with them. Albeit my collection has pretty much started from scratch (due to previous financial problems), I do own about 50 games. Some I have yet to even crack open.

I can't even process the thought of trading-in/selling the games as I have this mental issue of not being able to every play them again if I want. I have to hold back my spending however as much as I can, because like most people, I have debt to catch up on and space as of right now is limited.

Can't wait to eventually buy a house with the gf and get my man cave, haha!
Yes, we're all mentally ill who agree with you, TylerH. How dare we take advantage of price reductions on games that we have some interest in and not "OMG I NEED TO PLAY THIS AND DEVOUR IT RIGHT NOOOOWWWW!!1" interest levels.

Barry felt obliged to call me out on being a "hoarder" when I mentioned during the DoTW discussion that I felt better about my backlog. I honestly thought he was being sarcastic but no, apparently he's one of those l33t asshats that knows best for everyone.

Eff him, if he can magically find me the 30-100 hours I spend to fully be done with most of the games I "waste" my money on--only THEN will he make me start to feel inferior.
The other guy does have a good point. I have a huge backlog because I bought games that I didn't want to play immediately and it was a waste. I guess I'm playing devils advocate today. It's unfortunate because he has a good message but he comes across as an asshole cause he doesn't know how to deliver the message tactfully.
I understand giving having to give your opinion when you clearly disagree with something, but I hate it when people have to preach until others acknowledge their view and concurs. Clearly he takes things overly seriously and has nothing else to do with his free time.
I just dont understand why he gives a sh!t.

Spend your money how you want i could care less.
I also have a pretty huge backlog. At this rate, I will certainly probably reach a point in my mid-life where I realize I will need to live 5 lifetimes to beat all the games in my collection. :P

I look at it this way though. Games are my "thing". I've loved them since I was a kid, and I still do. I think it's good for every person to have one or two things they like to burn some spare change on. For me, that thing is games.

Secondly, I RARELY buy a game for more than $20. The majority of games I buy are usually $10-15. Thanks to frequent sales, and Cheapassgamer, this still allows me to buy about 6-10 games a month. All for the price of 1 or 2 full priced games. While I may not have time to play these games right now, they are games I will enjoy when I get to play them, and I DO plan to play them.

I will admit that in my teens, I used to jump on buying games just because they were cheap even if I didn't really like the genre (like a sports game). Now I only buy games in genres I like, but like I said, there are still frequent enough sales to buy several a month.

Overall, if you are spending your money responsibly, It doesn't matter what you spend that excess on. Plus, hoarding money is the #1 reason why we have such a terrible rich/poor gap in the US. The rich people just hoard all their money away and never spend it...
@the_grimace

Hoarding money is what the majority of wealthy people do. I plan on being wealthy, and it will be to hard work and saving, not hoarding. Hoarding is an actual diagnosis and I am sure that some rich people do it, but not most of them. I think the majority of them put it to use to make more money through investments and then live on the income that it provides when they retire.
I have a huge backlog. I don't care either. if a game is 10 dollars what is that going to hurt. I don't drink alchol, but when I did, on a Friday night I would spend between 60 and 100 dollars. I would wake up Saturday with nothing to show. now I can spend 60 dollars and have 6-10 games to look at or mayby one day play
