Is it stupid to buy a Galaxy S2 now?

We're on Sprint.

My brother is looking for a new phone and is eligible for an upgrade, right now he has a LG Rumor Touch, so upgrading to even an S2 would be a major improvement for him. He doesn't have a job at the moment so even $100 for a phone is out of the question unfortunately.

Right now Costco is selling the S2 for $30, and that includes waiving the activation fee and a 6 piece starter kit. Similarly, Amazon has the S2 for a penny, but I'm sure he'd get stuck with the activation fee, so it would come out about the same.

My question is, is it stupid to jump on the S2 now? In searching around the net, it seems like the S2 didn't even get the Jelly Bean update on Sprint (is this right?), so it's already not running the most recent version. Would getting locked in to this phone for close to 2 years be a mistake, and would it be better to look for a cheap deal on the S3 in the coming months? I know the S4 is coming soon so it seems like the S3 may see some price cuts soon.

Thanks for the input.

Honestly tell him just get it. He really doesn't have the funds and the S2 isn't a bad phone from what I've used of it.

$30 is not bad for it plus with the starter kit it's pretty good.

Where did you find it on Amazon for a penny?
Upgraded to an S2 as the first smartphone I've ever had. Works great for me. Does pretty much everything the newer Android phones do. I'd say go for it.
It looks like there's a cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly build for it. I definitely understand that rooting a phone isn't for everyone, but it's certainly an option if he wants something a little more current.

That said, personally I would last to the end of the contract so that he can be out of it clear and free. I hate contracts something fierce anyhow, but it also gives you a modicum of negotiating power to where you can probably work your rates a bit lower or have a shot at turning that $100+ smart phone in to a free phone direct with Sprint. I always had luck getting newer phones free or cheapass from t-mobile when I was with them, I can't imagine Sprint is much different.

Why is that jerk nerds like me can't just answer a damn question without offering an alternative?
@diazt350 - http://wireless.amaz...m/dp/B00A0CJ1CG - One cent with a new or extended contract.
where there is smoke in your thoughts, there is fire.
Personally I would wait if it is possible. With the S4 right around the corner I bet it wont be too long until you see S3s for really cheap prices. They are on sale for $100 every other week on contract, and most likely will even be lower once the S4 is out.
Yes.

The S4 is coming out very soon, and the S2 is out of date. The S2 is slower, larger/bulkier, and old. I wouldnt bother with an S2 as there will probably be good deals on the S3 soon enough since the S4 is coming out soon... I would definitely wait. Why get stuck with a phone that is almost 2 generations old when you can wait a relatively short period of time and get a much better phone. Your bro seems like he has had his phone, and been waiting, for a while...so what difference will it make for him to wait until the S4 comes out and then score a great deal on the S3?
yes
Thanks for the input guys. I told him to wait at least a couple months and check out ads and stores for deals on an S3. At the very least, the S2 will never go back up in price, so it's not like he's missing out on a rare opportunity to pick up an S2.
