Best and Worst TV Intros

Posted by tylerh1701, 29 April 2013 · 400 views

So to me, intros and theme songs for TV shows are pretty inconsequential. When I start watching a new show I'll watch the opening theme/credits once or twice, then just start skipping over them whenever possible (either via DVR or on DVD). What has prompted me to write this blog is one I've just stumbled upon recently that I think may be the worst I've ever seen...

I tried getting into Weeds a few months ago on Netflix but couldn't get past the first season. It just didn't feel myself getting into it, and after doing a little bit more research I decided it probably wasn't for me. Well my girlfriend just finished watching The Office and has now apparently moved on to Weeds. Watching it this afternoon, I was reminded just how terrible the theme song is, and that the intro video that goes along with it is also pretty pretentious. I'm no music specialist, but those lyrics just make me cringe.

There's only one other intro/song I can think of that I really dislike:

I actually enjoy Entourage quite a bit, but the opening song and video are just terrible to me.

And just to get those two songs out of my head, here are two that I really enjoy and don't mind watching once in a while:

Mad Men isn't my absolute favorite show, but I'm trying to stay current with it. I really enjoy the art style used in the intro, and the foreboding music fits perfectly with the tone of the show. As for The Sopranos, I love that show and also love the opening credits. Kind of ironic considering how similar the opening is to the Entourage opening, but the song and imagery of a gritty New Jersey fit great with the show.

So, are there any specific theme songs or openings that you guys love or hate? I'm sure there's a lot more good ones I'm missing or just haven't seen...

Firefly and Justified are two that come to mind that I really like. And they're not musical styles I normally listen to.
Ooh, Justified's a good one. Nowadays, most shows on basic cable don't even get to have full intros, it seems they can cram in an extra commercial break that way.

The two that instantly pop in my head are two shows that have a lot of importance in my life so how much they stand out to anyone else is pretty YMMV, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer and USA's Psych.

Buffy is completely non-lyrical but back in the "rawkin' 90s" it really fit the bill for a young-adult's action-horror-dark comedy; I could probably "sing" the entire song to this day. It also helps that it ran for 7 seasons and having turned-on several GFs to the series, it's safe to say I've probably heard that theme well over 100x.

And with Psych's, it just fits the vibe of the characters so well and with a catchy earworm hook, it's hard for me to deny the resonation. My (current) longtime GF turned me onto this goofy series and it's just stuck ever since. We get a little giddy when they actually play the long version of the intro, which is almost a full-song, versus the more common 20 second intro they usually use.

That Weeds intro isn't all that horrible since the first season is all about "standard suburban mom gets tangled up in becoming the casual drug dealer to all the other surbanites," is it? It embodies the theme so I'd say it gets the job done, at least. And besides, it doesn't last long as the series drags on and gets much more complicated they ditch the original theme altogether, if that helps placate your ears I'm the future. ;) (My lady stuck with the show for a few seasons--5 maybe?--before she stopped liking it.)
Dexter intro is double plus good.

I'll agree on Justified, after running through the seasons on Amazon Prime that show's got me but good. That doofy ass intro song is fun to sing wandering around the house.
Assuming we don't have to keep this to just live action show intros, I'm just going to leave this here.

Gravity Falls is one of my favorite cartoons on TV today, and this intro embodies so much of why I enjoy it.
I absolutely agree about Weeds. Fortunately they got rid of it in seasons 4-7.
I also really dislike the intro to True Blood, it makes the show seem much more mean spirited than it actually is.

Community came to mind as a good one (but I still skip it most of the time).

With most intros they are primarily good by association (as long as they aren't really annoying like Weeds). If I hear the Buffy theme song it makes me think of Buffy and I like thinking about Buffy, so it is therefore good (which is why I made it my ringtone). The same can be said about Firefly, Dexter, The Simpsons, Futurama, Angel, Archer, Harvey Birdman, and other shows that I have positive associations with.
I like Dexters opening but I skip it. I also dig Mad Mens opening, on season 4 right now like that show a bit. I don't mind Breaking Bad's 10 seconds intro.

I hate the Walking Dead, Weeds as you pointed out is absolutely terrible.
Personally, Mad Men and X-Files are the best for me. Buffy's is nice as well. Honestly, it's all about the song rather than the visuals for me. It's one of the many reasons I hated Smallville. Fuck that Remy Zero song.
Maybe it's just because I love Weeds (well the first 4 or 5 seasons anyway), but that song used to get stuck in my head all the time when I was watching the show on DVDs and/or streaming. I kind of enjoyed it when they used different artists to cover the theme song as well.

I could see how it would get old after watching several episodes in a row though.
Tales from the darkside. Old show but the intro is simple and effective. http://m.youtube.com...h?v=UnE3-0X-174
Wow, the Weeds song is terrible. I did like the setup with everything being the same, reminds me of the town in Edward Scissorhands.

Game of Thrones intro is really cool and always pumps me up for the new episode.
