View Full Version : Is it worth it to get a Xbox now?

I currently have a PS2 and a DS. I usually don't have 2 consoles at a time, due to life commitments. But I was debating on picking up a Xbox, to play NFL2K5 with the enhancement pack. Of course I would get other games for it. I wasn't planning on getting a next-gen console for awhile. Though if the Wii is priced right ($200 or under), then I may purchase that. So should I get a Xbox, or put the money towards a Wii or Xbox360?

the Xbox is nice. There are some good exclusives for it. If you could find one cheap enough it may be worth a purchase. Just make sure you dont get one with a Thomson drive in it.
What do Xbox's cost nowadays? $150 new?

Yes, they are $150 new with Forza. I think without the game it's $129. I picked one up as a back-up, now that Microsoft no longer is manufacturing them. I have a launch XBOX with a Thompson drive. It still works great, but I am starting to get the disk read error. And because the BC for the 360 is suspect.

If all you want it for is NFL 2k5 I don't think you really need one. Maybe wait for them to be under 100 bucks or just get the 360.

Well can the Xbox360 play NFL2K3 with the ehancement pack with Action Replay? Plus I would play other games, like Halo, Halo2, Half Life 2, the Xbox exclusives.
Honestly if you already have a PS2 I don't see much reason to pick up an Xbox.
There are a few very good exclusives, but the 'few' - maybe one or two dozen - should be stressed.
Ninja Gaiden, Jade Empire, Fable, Halo 1+2, Forza, KOTOR 1+2, Morrowind, Riddick
(Some of those are also on the PC, but not for any other console.) There may be a few more and there are some worthwhile exclusives that I wouldn't classify as AAA quality (such as Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Death Row, Otogi, Deus Ex 2:IW)
The Xbox is a nice system, built in hard drive is great and multi-platform titles often look best on it. I wouldn't say it'd be a terrible purchase, but if it were me I'd pass (or look to get a used Xbox) unless you've really played everything that looks decent for the PS2.

Don't forget that Ninja Gaiden, Jade Empire, Fable, Halo 1+2, Forza (I think!), and I think one of the KOTOR's are all BC on the 360. So shit, might as well just save up for a 360.
Unless you're really dying to play Otogi or Panzer Dragoon Orta.

I would like to answer this with a big NO! You should never buy a system for just one game... you end up with a door stop in a few months.
It's not worth getting an Xbox now. Microsoft dropped this baby as fast as Sega dropped the Dreamcast.

Are all X-box games going to become BC eventually, or are they just going to forget about certain games?

There are enough exclusives out there to justify picking one up for sure. I just don't know if it is better to just pay a little more and grab a 360. The games are dirt cheap for the XBOX now, so I guess you may want to go with the original, and use the money that you were going to spend on the 360 to start out with an instant collection. My personal recommendations would be the following:
HALO
HALO 2
DOOM 3
Chronicles of Riddick
Advent Rising
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
Jade Empire
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Half Life 2
Advent Rising is a little glitchy, but the story makes up for it. Others to keep in mind would be Panzer Dragoon Orta, Ninja Gaiden/Black (the diffulty turned me off), Forza, Project Gotham 2, Deathrow, Otogi, Otogi 2, Morrowind, Sudeki, Dungeons and Dragons Heroes, Oddworld Stranger and Armed and Dangerous.
Those are all console exclusive and you can get most is not all for $20 or less. So basically, for $350, you can get an XBOX and 10 games. Don't get me wrong, I love my 360, but I have had an XBOX since launch. If I never had one, I would be content to play the XBOX until the price on the 360 drops.

They haven't said, but it doesn't seem likely that stuff like Morrowind would ever be on the BC list. The best option is to wait for an emulator on the PC.

I don't want to keep my X-box for 2 or 3 games. That's ridiculous.

Yes, they are $150 new with Forza. I think without the game it's $129.
$179.99 w/ Forza Motorsport and 3 months of Xbox Live
$149.99 for just the system
I haven't seen the system only packages in a while though. Around Christmas those Forza bundles were all that Microsoft were sending out.

That reminds me, I need to get a backup since mine is another launch unit with a Thompson drive. Hopefully the price will drop just a little bit more.

Its still worth owning a Dreamcast too!
and 'one or two dozen' good exclusive games is nothing to sneeze at.
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Crimson Skies
Riddick
Metal Arms Glitch in the System
I could go on.
Also dont forget that lots of multiplatform games run and look the best on Xbox. Customized soundtracks in games like GTA: San Andreas, or Burnout just own! =D
I'd say between exclusives, and multiplatform games that are just better on the Xbox, you could gather together about 50 or so good games for it.
