View Full Version : Not really news, I guess. PS3 in short supply or possibly delayed because of Blu-Ray

PS3 will likely be in short supply, or maybe even delayed because of problems with Blu-Ray manufacturing:

Cell chip yield is low also:

So who does this help more, MS or Nintendo?

Sony already has enough bad publicity going against it. They really need to get the ps3 out on time if they hope to regain their footing....and they need to drop the price.

With manufacturing problems, expect a delay and the price to stay the same. More problems usually equals more cost, so don't expect a change.

Its already Q4. They CANT delay it and have it miss Christmas. If they can only make 10 units for launch, then that is what they'll launch with. It wont be delayed any significant amount of time.

Is this a surprise? I really don't remember a truely easy to get system at launch since the Dreamcast (though, haven't bought a launch system since then, so maybe others weren't that hard). Systems are traditionally difficult to come by at launch, so this isn't a surprise.

In all honesty, I'm not sure this is a bad thing for anyone. If you can't afford teh price, who really cares? With the high price, not as many would sell at launch anyway, and the last thing you want is a flood of them on the shelves with no one buying (no buzz gets created there).

Who wins? Xbox 360. I don't think the Wii will be easy to get either. They might be some around, but you won't see them everywhere. I think MS will pack-in a game this Christmas season, and it'll be one of the big toys for a second straight year.

Sony is definitely going to lose some ground. Nintendo was right when they said the tech was getting ahead of itself which is becoming more and more apparent with the PS3. Microsoft was smart and at least held back from going completely radical with the system. DVD doesn't look so bad anymore. Microsoft and Nintendo will both pick up the stragglers.

I don't think Nintendo really gets as much an advantage from this as MS does. When N said they weren't competing with the other two this time around, they're mostly right. Both the PS3 and 360 are fighting for the center of your entertainment needs. If one isn't as available or delayed, the other gains. The Wii's approximate price point also kinda takes it out of the equation.

I'm not sold on a PS3 yet. The PS1 took a while for me to actually want one. The PS2 hooked me with games like (yes) Ridge Racer and SSX from the jump. PS3 not so much. Honestly, I can wait for one because I do not think it's time for a new Playstation yet. Still a pretty exciting year on the way for the PS2 so allow me to keep playing that, thank you. Did Xbox 360 come out too early? Meh, no comment. It's a fine system. The Wii is coming out right on time pretty much. PS3 can stand a delay.

or they can just launch it with a defective drive that craps out after a couple of years and hope nobody notices.

I don't understand why Nintendo is ahead in this poll...if anything, Microsoft stands to gain here because they are after similar audiences.

Nintendo is likely going to sell like crazy, but it won't have that much to do with anything Sony is doing.

Sony said there will be 2 million worldwide at launch, and now if this means there will be even less...ouch.

For the poll I said Microsoft will gain the most. People wanting a PS3 will want something similar to it (aka 360) if they can't get their hands on a PS3. I really can't see many people not being able to get a PS3 at launch and instead getting a Wii since, well...if they want one they'd get one anyways.

In Japan, MS doesn't exist so it is an advantage for Nintendo.

The reason Nintendo will benefit is because this Xmas, PS3 and Wii are the new systems. Sure 360 will also benefit, but the news will be focusing on the 2 newcomers, and when both are sold out, but nintendo had 5million units and sony had 200k total, it will be huge for appearance to the public.

It'll be spun like this:

"Nintendo is selling out due to the huge demand of the popular new Wii system (in the background it shows old people playing tennis)"

"Sony is seeing losses as PS3 is sold out due to huge shortages. Consoles are selling for upwards of 500 million dollars on ebay"

I voted Nintendo because of the huge price difference between them. When parents are out shopping for little Jimmy's new system and they go to Best Buy, see this new Wii unit, play around with it and MAYBE actually have some fun with it, and then see the price tag (much lower than Xbox 360), they are more likely to go for the inexpensive system.

Again though, I love the idea of the Wii but I remain reserved until I try one for myself. If it plays as great as I hope it does, then I'm fully sold.
