When I was at my EB last night the manager told me he has heard thur the grapevine that all stores(this includes all stores like even Best Buy, Circuit City, and Toys-R-Us), will only be getting 3 systems at launch(2 $599.99 and 1 $499.99). Thats why they have not done any pre-orders as of yet, because they want to know this before they start accepting the pre-orders if they even do. He said there is a big EB/GS meeting in Vegas in the next month were they will know for sure what is going on.

Also what I found more disturbing is that after the first million units at launch are spread out thur the country, there might not be another shipment untill early 2007. Because Sony is having a ton of problem with the Blue-Ray drive or chip or something with that Blue-Ray tech.

Has anybody heard anything like this anywhere? I would hate to have all this credit at EB for the sole purpose of buying a PS3, and not be able to find one around to buy, untill next year.

Yes, I started a thread here http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2039547
that has some links to articles about the production problems Sony is having.

Sounds about right, Sony is trying to fail.

EB manager's are probably the worst place to get "news" from, ever.

These are the same people who say "Hey, omg, you've gotta preorder Zelda because I heard it will be limited and stores will sell out!!"

Sounds like this manager is talking out of his ass... if anything, it will be EB / GS who get 3 units, places like Wal-Mart / Best Buy will get more, just like the 360 launch.

wouldn't be surprising. they're obviously trying to position the PS3 as this exclusive, upper-class only machine. it certainly worked well for the 360.

I agree, it sounds like he's building up hype for his own store scaring people into thinking there's going to be a limited number of units.

There's no way Sony will deliver less than 2 million units. They know they're popular and they know they have a undying fanbase. Plus, this thing is do or die for Sony, they're trying to get two of their most expensive investments (Cell and Blu-Ray) into your home.

Yep and somehow I'm not shocked another dumbass is listening to the EB/GS dumbasses.

That would be what? 100,000 units for launch. I can't stand Sony and I don't belive that bullshit.

No stores have any information regarding the launch yet and won't until late August at the earliest. They're waiting to get concrete numbers on the shipment before doing preorders because they don't want to run into problems like the 360 preorder list had.

The only thing I've ever heard from various EB managers around the eastern part of the country (western IN, western PA, LI/Manhattan NY) as of late was how badly some of them were burned with 360 preorders. They expected far more than they got and, in turn, some of them ended up losing some good, long-term customers that they had for years when they simply couldn't meet the preorder demand. It's rough but, honestly, numbers weren't necessarily assured in the first place and a few people in those stores said that it did seem a bit ridiculous that their preorder lists were reaching into well over a hundred people right before they heard there would be shortages and yet some higher-ups still wanted more preorders to be taken.

I guess that the backlash of the 360 launch will probably affect such launches with the PS3 and possibly the Wii as well, at least until concrete numbers get out there. What really makes me wonder is how much people will drop on the systems since while some areas of the country have incomes that make a PS3 easily fit within expendible income, I wonder if those numbers will offset those of people who couldn't afford it unless they did nothing but save for half a year.

Then again, we live in a world of credit and massive debt. Buy today, lose tomorrow and all that rot. ;)

No need to preorder just go to Walmart, they don't care either way.

Given that this information is from an EB/GS lanager, I'm taking it with a grain of salt, HOWEVER, if it's true, does anyone else feel like we're watching a blooper reel version of a console launch at this point? I mean really, all we need is the Benny Hill theme and we're set.

I agree. From the sounds of it, this could be a disaster of Saturn proportions.

but yeah sony is not looking too good at the moment..

yeah, right.

Yeah Right?

Are you kidding?

They have already priced the system $200 higher than the 2nd most expensive. It has a dvd player in it that it's banking on that is supposedly inferior to HD-DVD (from what i have heard HD-DVD is more than likely going to beat out Blu-Ray), which conincidentally the XBOX 360 is releasing a drive for. XBOX 360 already has a huge start and so will the WII if what the OP says is true.

It's not looking good at all. You can be the biggest sony fan in the world but you need to wake up to reality. It looks like they are in some trouble.

Lol who listen to what gamestop managers have to say they are alwasy wrong. Sony said that they have already had made about 2 million ps3's and that was about when e3 had just started. Not to say that sony was being truthfull but i think sony will get out enough ps3's on the release date. Not everyone that wants one will be able to get one on the first shipment but im thinking by about the 4th or 5th shipment everyone who had reserved a ps3 will get the one. I mean sony saw how pissed people got when the stores got like 15 xbox 360s when they had like 120 reserves per store

The much vaunted Cell processor, for instance, appears to be a low-yield wonder. Tom Reeves, VP of semiconductor and technology services at IBM, openly admitted that only one of every five Cell CPUs rolling out of their fabs is fully functional with regards to all eight Synergistic Processing Elements (http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/cpu/cell-1.ars). In an interview with Electronics News (http://www.reed-electronics.com/electronicnews/article/CA6350202.html?industryid=21365), Reeves said "With a chip like the Cell processor, you’re lucky to get 10 or 20 percent [yield]. If you put logic redundancy on it, you can double that." His comments suggest that Sony's effective yield should be closer to 20 to 40 percent, since the PlayStation 3 only requires 7 functional SPEs (6 for the heavy lifting, one for the system). The low yields did prompt an interesting question as to whether or not Sony would consider re-engineering to use Cells with fewer functional cores, to which Reeves said, "It could , but I don’t think Sony has thought about offering that."

On the Blu-ray front, China's Commercial Times newspaper is reporting that [B]Sony has not been able to meet demand for producing the special diode required for Blu-ray's blue laser. Reportedly the problems affects both Sony and Nichia Corp., who together will supply the majority of diodes to all Blu-ray device manufacturers. The report, which was summarized in English by IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/news/sb/2006-07-11/#3), suggests that the manufacturing problems could cause problems for the PS3 as well as Blu-ray players in general.

3 consoles per stores still sounds really low but I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 launched in the U.S. with max 700,000-800,000 units.

^ That would be a fine number considering the price. Nintendo said they plan of shipping / sellinging only 6 million Wiis in the first 6 months. That would be around 1 million a month.

I will laugh my ass off if both the PS3 and Wii can't make enough systems and people buy the 360 instead.

That was MS whole plan for coming out first. So, that those who want a next gen console will buy theirs instead of the Wii and PS3.

Wouldn't it be easier to say your "step-second cousin's girlfriend's cousin's cat"?

step-brother's second cousin --> step second cousin
second cousin's aunt's daughter --> second cousin's cousin
step-second cousin's cousin --> step-second cousin
