K so I traded in a few games cuz of this lovley 3 and get $10 extra stuff..and I had gotten a USED copy of Meteos (<3 that game) and a NEW copy of M&L:PiT. Exciting? Yes, very.
The used Meteos was in great condition...the game and box didn't looked used at ALL! Of course, with GS being the way they are..a "NEW" game was already opened and they put the game into the box...but whatever. I always thought that was shady! Beause to be honest, had they stuck a "NEW" sticker on the Meteos I got, I would of believed 100% that it was a new copy!
ANYway. I go to register M&L with my Nintendo account.. and..the code has already been registered... what the fuck????
Granted, it's no big deal. Really, the only thing you get from registering games is like.. screen savers/wallpapers, etc. That's not the point! I probably was sold a used game and charged for a new one.. GRR
OR some asshat at GS already used that code to register it for themselves?
Either way that's still pretty fucked up.
And yeah, it's not a big deal at all.
...It's just the principle.. Grrrrr

Well everytime I've gone into a A gamestop and bought a new game.. it's always been that way. I never understood why they open new games up? I understand theft issues.. but alot of places keep them w/ security tags OR lock them up.
Also, that same Gamestop I went to.. they were doin "trade in 4 games, extra $10". Even though I went to another Gamestop 3 miles away the day before and traded in 6 games for an additional $20--and yet, this one was doin 4.
Meh, got rid of some games I got on clearance at Kmart and wound up gettin Meteos and M&L..so I made out well.
Just seems to shady!

That's my local EB, it's great. I've had one problem since the new group of four or five employees started there around a year ago (couldn't return a "new" game that wasn't sealed, blah blah blah, dealt with it easily enough). In return, I'm often told I'm one of their favorite customers and they no longer mind my asking for penny guides and other such things.
If you don't like threads like this, don't post in them. Easy fix. (This is mostly directed at the threadcrap post I just had to clean out.)

I want to hear about the time it got drunk and stole the Homecoming parade float and crashed it into Old Man Jones's carrot garden, and thus we couldn't have carrot cake at the dance!
I want to read about how it punted your dog like a football!
How it totally took the last cookie from the cookie jar, but told Mom that it was you that did it, and you got in trouble, and you had to vacuum the living room of all the cookie crumbs that Gamestop made in there, while Gamestop laughed at you and got a juice box for being so honest.
I want to aggregately compile every last instance of Gamestop pissing on someone's mailbox, prank calling an order for 50 pizzas, and putting tobasco in your toothpaste. I want them all cataloged and saved in a text file that accumulates such annoyances daily, so that when I damn well get on CAG, I'm the first to know that Gamestop once AGAIN was causing trouble in the world, only to get off scott free!
Praise threads like this, gentlemen! For now we know the true black heart that Gamestop has! How else could we be so convinced, unless there was a thread about it EVERY DAY?
Surely you do not suggest we slack in our holiest of quests to scrutinize Gamestop and its dirty deeds!

Not necessarily an employee. It's more LIKELY, but I've caught customers doing that as well to gutted copies. Same when a game comes with a map or a trading card or something, a lot of people will open up the gutted case and yoink that out of there, if it wasn't secured with the gut disc (left in the box). :(

You do realize that's retail in a nutshell? When I worked for Hibbett Sports, the store I was going to run was going to pay me $25K to start. Pay was based on volume, so I couldn't increase my pay for quite a while. 50 hours a week was also required, and typically during a new store opening, 65-70 hours a week wasn't out of the question. And no extra pay. Sure there were bonuses and incentives, but do you think you are going to get any the first six months to a year? Hell no I say.
I doubt Walmart employees get paid more (except for maybe SMs) because Wally has the highest turnover rate in the entire country.
Let's see: work an average of 55-60 hours a week in a thankless job and pay nearly $200 a week on daycare for $25K

9-5? I wish. At least one 12 hour shift was required, and more often than not I saw SMs work multiple 12 hour shifts in a week. Working 3-4 times a week at 12 hours is one thing, having to work 6-7 days doing it is another.

Why is everyone ragging on the OP; the store committed fraud. First, they put a new sticker on a used game, then the store sold a used game (or incomplete) for full retail price as new. That is simply unacceptable. As for simply getting a sealed copy from another store, maybe the OP did not want to pay any money for the game, hence why they were trading in credit for the game.

Gamestop do not resale used games as new. They use the wrapper for things like magazines. Also heck yes I would use codes from a store simply since the code is on the outside of the boxes.
Speaking of pirating I have seen a kid/college student run around taking pictures of CD covers. He moved away like if nothing was going on sheilding his camera.
Persoanlly Gamestop is like working in McDonalds where everybody gets the shaft and they have like four managaers in one store doing a 13 year old kids job.
Is our society that bad we have to have convicts clerks behind the counters who are like 40 and balding cursing all the time.

Okay, I've never registered a game at Nintendo. Is this story the same as I've heard from here before where someone was buying a new unwrapped PC game and registering the user code on-line, later finding out it has been already activated by someone else, in a nutshell?
That's terrible to hear that story OP, I've found a third reason not to buy new at GS/EB, even if its not the store's fault that someone could have taken the code while no one was looking. I don't own a DS, but own GBA/GCN and didn't realize the codes were all specifically made per game.

It's not even close to a wash. (Based on 40 hours per week and taking your kids every week to dayvare)
200 * 52 = 10400
25000 - 10400 = 14600
Taxes on 25000 isn't taking anything at all. Especially if you have 3 kids. You are getting tons knocked off for having kids. So if you consider an extra 13000 or so after daycare nothing, then i guess you are correct. Especially since most mom's working there would just be a supplement to the husband.

Yeah, maybe on 40 hours a week. I would never be so lucky. Try 55-60 hours average. Then you factor gas (I filled up four times a month before, once (maybe) now) and a new vehicle (would have to with driving that much more) and it's a pure wash, if not detrimental. And that salary only works out to about $10/hour. Why put up with that much more stress?

This is why I ask that my games be sealed copies and not the "display" copy of the game just put back into the box when I get the last one.
You either sell me a "new" game or charge me for what they already define as a "used" game. Once the box has been opened it instantly depreciates from "New" to "Used" regardless of whether it's been under the counter or in a game system.

I bought Paper Mario for GC at EB and thought it was sealed, yet when I took the plastic off there was an EBGames sticker on the case... now why would they need to reseal this game? Dont give me the 'previous display copy' BS because there were already like 12 on the shelf opened and gutted. However the disc was mint and so was everything else so I really didnt care, but still, why do they need to pull shit like this? How many times do you have people complain about these shady practices when they buy from stores like Best Buy or Circuit City?
But if its opened and mint, its not a problem, but most of the time the display copies are crapped up.

They can, but most stores do not play the gutted games. Even though we've had the age old argument of "Used vs. new but not sealed" 1,000 times, and we will have it 1,000 more times till the day we die, what EB/GS have been doing for years now has not gotten them in any trouble, aside from a few customers issues.
And to think, maybe if all the complainers who start these types of threads put their foot down and complain to higher ups at EB, rather then just post on a message board, maybe EB/GS will possibly get our point across. Instead, they keep giving EB/GS their hard earned dollars, when they should be shopping elsewhere. But hey, it's so much easier to type "Gamestop Sux! employees are gay!1!" then to pick up a phone and call coporate, right?

K, I need to bring this back up.. lol
I went to a DIFFERENT Gamestop tonight---and I had about 6 games to trade in. Ya know, because of the Trade in 3 get $10 extra? Yeah! Well I did this last week twice. I had quite a bit of games to get rid of (thanks to the Kmart clearance), and went to Gamestop #1. Traded 6 games, got about $70 in credit..looked around and didn't see anything. Went to Gamestop #2. Gamestop is where I had the problem with the original point of this thread... Ya know, the part where the Mario & Luigi code didn't work. Then, I went back to Gamestop #2 a few days later w/ some more trade ins. THIS time, it was "4 games $10extra" Now at Gamestop #1, I didn't have that problem. I got 6 games w/ a $20 extra. Gamestop #2..said no, it's 4. Well I had 4 games (tnakfully) so I said "k whatever". Then I picked up stuff..inlcuding Superstar Saga, which turned out that my game got erased after 10 1/2 hours lol (Though, I brought it back to Gamestop #2 a few days later.. and did even exchange no problem).
So then it seems that I'm done w/ Gamestop for a while.
But today I feel the want for more, so between me and my friend.. had 6 games and headed off to Gamestop #1. Remember, Gamestop #1 was the original Gamestop I went to and traded 6 games in and got the $20 extra. NOW all of a sudden it's FOUR games and NOT INCLUDING DS games. .....Since...When? I know sports titles from last year and beyond weren't allowed--and thats cool. But NOW all of a sudden it's not? what the hell!???? I got $53 in credit.. and SHOULD of gotten $73.
I told him that I did it like a week 1/2 ago and it was 3 for an extra 10. "No, they must of messed up" ....................Sooo yeah. Whatever.
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with Gamestop ?! ?! ?!

Well, one possibiliy may be that the people in both stores talk to one another and, as such, you tend to come up in the course of conversation. If it seems like you're acting on deals too much and they are the only two GSes in the area they may be warning each other about your trade-ins and be heading you off at the pass, so to speak, on potential deals. This is only a possibility, mind you, but I know my local stores tend to talk to one another a few times a day about what's going on and particular customers, if need be, so if something fishy arises everyone knows about it.
And if you keep using the same deal with similar titles or titles only for a certain system, that usually raises some red flags. That's not to say that the terms of the deal should be changing here, there, and everywhere but considering most people I know would simply refuse to honor the deal, ask their DM what to do and then refuse to honor your deals, or something else along those lines.

I bought a new copy of Trama Center at a Gamestop in College Station Texas. I was stoked about getting a new copy of such a rare game, well wrong it was. I got the game home, put it in my DS, turned it on, and bam! Save files in all three slots with hours worth of game play logged, what?! I just paid new money for a used game, I think not. Went back to the store, told the guy I wanted all of my money back, bad buisnesses don't get my money, he told me he couldnt refund a new game, well well, I think not. I showed him the save files and he had the nerve to say, "well you know, you could have done that yourself". I explained it would have been impossible for me to play a game 6 hours in 39 minutes. Needless to say after I started loudly talking and letting all the other customers know that I was sold a used game for full game price, i got my money back. As I was leaving the manager told me that they had probably been playing the game behind the counter as a tester, well well, not only was it used, I was helping pay lazy staff, I think not.

I see what you mean, but I only did the promotion like.. 3, 4 times total. It's not something that was like a 3day only thing! It was for what.. 2 weeks? And plus, the only time I think trade ins are shady would be if I went and picked up like 9 copies of Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes from Kmart at $3 each..and brought them all to gamestop and traded them in for $72 + $30 = $102.
But I never brought in the same game twice--nor did I during the whole period. I traded about 12 games and they were all different.
Plus I don't go in there often for them to be talking.
It's ashame.. I wouldn't wanna shop there anyway. But when there's trade in promotions that are GOOD.. sometimes it's hard to resist! Especially trade in promotions follwed up with B2G1 sales!!

It's just one employee that gets a bug up their ass and starts making a fuss about it. Bitch to the DM and see where that gets you. Don't like the answer, tell him you'll be shopping elsewhere. Be sure to leave a contact number.
-Then get 20 random people to call and tell the DM they heard what happened to you and say the same thing. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. If he's anywhere near competent, he'll attempt to fix the problem.

I love GameStop. My local store only has great people working there and they never try to screw you over. I'm going to tell them how great they are the next time I'm there.
Yeah the one I go to is great. I always go the same time of day during the week so the same dude and girl are working. Last time I went in in there, this dude walked in talking on his cell phone saying "Yeah man dat bitch was kissin on my neck and shit. -- Nah not her man, dat pregnant chick." And the two employees and myself were litterally rolling around laughing. When it was all over with, I looked at the guy and said "Seriously, thats way too much. Just leave." and he did.
I've never been screwed on prices but I've never got an awesome deal (Although I have caught a few). I have nothing against gamestop but if there was a reliable alternative, I'd take my chances.
