Knowing that the Nintendo Wii will be 480p enhanced definition and not true Hi-Definition, I was wondering if it would look better on a Enhanced Definition television or a high definition set.

What do you think?

Everything looks better on an HDTV.

ED TV is just what it sounds like.

SD doesn't look better on an HDTV....it actually looks like complete shat.

I didnt think it would look so great on HD, which is why I am thinking about enhanced definition. My only problem is that I want widescreen. Gotta love sports on widescreen.

Wait, so you're thinking about getting a new TV... and then opting for ED instead of HD? That's potentially the worst decision you could ever make.

it does if you are using most of the cables. But if you have hdmi with an hd tv, then standard tv broadcasts look fine.

EDTV is just a cheaper option for those who want to improve NTSC appearance without making the full HDTV investment. The premium for HDTV is shrinking, so any savings might be shortlived.

Yeah, I just have my cable box output in only 1080i(and 720p on my old set that supported it) and regular programming looks good.

The only reason you would go ED instead of HD would be on a Plasma TV. Where the difference in price on a good Plasma like a Panasonic 42" is 1500 for an EDTV 480p and 2500 for a HDTV 720p.

All the projection displays have sets that display at least 720p resolution and can be had for less than 1500 USD.

I have little experience since i just got my HD plasma, but Resident Evil 4 in 480P on the GCN looks like crap on the tv.

If Comcast is using the same box as Cox, then the only offering with HDMI is the Motorola DVR.

That's NOT a good example of Progressive Scan from the GC from what I've heard. Trust me on this.

Do you have the GC running through component cables?

I'm not sure the cube is a good measure for progressive scan, even with component.

My PS2 looks nice and crisp on Progressive Scan on my HD LCD. I just run the Cube with Svideo since I don't have a digital out on it. It's a little fuzzy, but not terrible. That happens with anything running in a 480i on a high res screen like that.

The Wii will be designed from the ground up to run 480p. It'll look very nice, and every game ought to support it. :)

And with any luck it will upconvert all current GCN titles to 480p :D

Yes, comcast has HDMI boxes. They will not supply the HDMI cable though.

It's sort of true... RE4 doesn't look nearly as nice for some reason as say Pikmin 2 - both running in progressive scan. That said, it definitely doesn't look like shit - I even play it zoomed and it fills the screen almost perfectly.

It looks perfectly fine on our rear projection HDTV. But just to make sure, I tried it on my new LCD last night and... it looks great most of the time, but sometimes I can vertical lines on some objects (like the truck the two guys with Leon come on or whenever there's fog).

Thanks to Monoprice, such things really aren't an issue anymore :)

I think Monster Cable and any of the retailers that push their digital cabling products (ahem...Best Buy) should be sued for false advertising and flagrant price gouging. They sell $200 HDMI cables, for God's sake. TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS. For a cable that performs no better than a $10 cable from Monoprice. Hell, the cheapest one they sell is like $70. It's digital information, people. 0's and 1's. The information either gets there or it doesn't. Unless you're transferring that data at distances exceeding 25 feet, there is absolutely no advantage to using a more expensive cable. Ridiculous.

I don't know about how Wii games will look, but I have a 720p flat-panel in my computer room, and all of my Gamecube progressive-scan games look horrible. And yes, I am using component cables. I hope the Wii is better equipped to handle such things.

A lot of people say that some games look worse at high resolutions, but frankly, if that's the more ACCURATE depiction of the graphics, I support it.

Ok, I definitely wouldn't say they look horrible but not perfect for sure. It looks way better than CRTs.

I don't think I will miss not having a HDTV just yet.
