Summary: Friend Codes are back.
Doesn't seem legit, as they have not 100% confirmed online for the next Smash Bros. Plus, the game is called Super Smash Bros. Brawl, not Smash Bros. Dojo. (Dojo is what they're calling the official Smash site.)

Its a fake website..nyud.net is just a proxy; it's slightly possible that Nintendo threw something up and then realized the mistake and took it right back down.
Not that I necessarily believe this is legit, just saying.

You really think there won't be some kind of friend code-type system? It's fine if used properly. Even with friend codes in place, I can play against anyone in the world on Mario Kart. If they would just keep them static across all games, it'd be just like a buddy list implementation.
And I saw something about these leaked pages before. They were apparently on the Nintendo website.
i.e. http://wii.nintendo.com/games_wiiparty.html was a valid page earlier (saw it myself), showing Wii Music as a party game.

God please NO!
Something like the 360's friend system would be nice, but maybe simpler.
EDIT: something like botticus suggested, if it were static across all game, that would be fine.

What they need to do is make it so you have the option to connect wireless or have a wire.
They also need to make it so that you can choose either WEP or WPA, since thats the only thing holding me back from playing my DS online.

Honestly, I don't see how everybody believed the Nintendo Wii was all sunshine lollipops and rainbows. Maybe Nintendo can pick up some of the shit talk the 360 and PS3 have been getting for the past year.

Or if there was a messaging system to send someone your 'Friend-Code,' that would be nice. But a gamertag-ish thing is just so much easier.

I'm 99% sure that Nintendo already confirmed that the Wii's interface will be very much like the DSes. Yes, friend codes and all.
There's supposed to be friends lists to manage them but it's still stupid. How do you promote community yet, restrict it to only people you already know?

Friend Codes wouldn't be too bad if it were one per person, and we didn't have to have them for every game.

This man speaks the truth. I don't care how good my friends are, I don't like bugging them for a number every time they get a new game.

Summary: Friend Codes are back.
Friend Codes are a good thing if Nintendo wants to toss up some kind of roadblock to prevent kids (think under 13) from directly interacting with anyone they do not already know.

Wow, people are really THAT lazy that Friend Codes are so terrible?
I agree, a standard code across all games would be better than the one per game setup that the DS has now, but it's not impossible. I've played many matches with CAGs. You just throw FCs into your sig and be done. But, then again, I don't "friend code" play as much as I do random online play, so what do I know?
But, if it's another safe guard to keep kids safe, that's fine with me. There's a lot of sick people out there.

Friends codes inherently aren't bad, but the way Nintendo is handling them is (far) less than ideal currently.
With 24connect on the Wii, I want to be able to challenge my friend Joe to a match of Metroid Prime at any time. His LED on the front of the Wii pulses red letting him know that he's been challenged and he can accept or reject the challenge.
I should be able to broadcast this challenge out to my 3 other buddies with Wiis and Metroid Prime.
That'd be pretty cool, IMO.

This is sort-of on topic, sort of not... but is there any chance that the DS Wi-Fi adaptor will work with the Wii? And is the Wii supposed to have ANY wired support or is it strictly wireless? IMO it's kind of dumb to have a non-portable console insist on a wireless connection.

The other thing I hate is that the DS games have a roster limit, you can only have 100 codes saved into Tetris, for example. But they have it set up so that every person you play automatically has there code entered onto the roster, so it fills up fast. Well the instructions state that when it fills, it starts deleting codes, beginning with the first ones that you entered. The first codes that you entered are undoubtedly your real friends and not the random strangers you've played! Arrrrgh.

Yes, it will work.
And there will be a USB->Ethernet dongle. Not a great solution, but it'll be available.
Also, agree with daroga. Are people that lazy? Shit.

Friend codes are a pain in the ass. Having said that, if you can have some sort of central friends list that shows what other games people on your friend code list for easy addition, I think they become more tolerable.

I just think that the friend codes system is ok and having a different friend code for each game does have it's advantages. But that's not my problem... my problem is that friend codes (and stats for that matter) are tied via game and system. So if I want to keep all of my info, I have to keep that one game forever. Granted, Nintendo made the info is transferable from DS to DS because they know that they'd have different versions of the DS and people replace their old colored portable with a newer color frequently. But will that same feature be there for the Wii?
I can't rent a game and keep my stats, I have to buy the game and keep it if I want to keep my stats or buddies.

But if you don't like the game enough to begin with, you wouldn't buy it, and therefore you wouldn't care about the stats/buddies from it.
No?
Am I missing something?
'Cuz seems like 360 owners would bitch about this exact thing, but I don't hear 'em.
And if you got a game, sold it, and then decided to get it later on, I'd assume you could transfer info. If you can't, that's a problem, cuz then it dictates having to rebuild stats. But I'm guessing all of that will be tied to the Wiimote itself, especially since Miyamoto keeps talking about how he'd like everyone to have a personal controller. And if that's the case, it's just a question of re-enabling those stats via the remote.
Or so I'd think. We'll know in a few months.

I believe that's becasue the DS wasn't intended for online play in the first place, so the system had to be set up how it was (kinda like how Live first started on Xbox). With Wii, Nintendo has the chance for it to built into the system (rather then each indivdual game), this way there can be one unified gamer code and it'll be far easier to manage. I'm willing to bet that the Wii interface won't be too different from what we have on 360.

One gets what they pay for.
If Nintendo doesn't slap down a fee, I don't care.
Would I prefer a system like Xbox live? Sure.. that'd be nice.
But I have no problem with setting up lists when install a new PC game, so having to do something similar when I want to play a Wii game online doesn't strike me as that big a deal.
If Nintendo wanted to charge me for that, however, it'd be different.

The Wii should have an online interface "buddy" list like the 360 and xbox live because the gamertag/achievement/stat tracking is outstanding and we all would probably be happy with nothing less. However, Microsoft has years of experience with maintaining and developing these kinds of online features and Nintendo does not. Considering the fact that Nintendo isn't trying to set the world on fire with it's technology, you can probably expect the same thing from it online capabilities. There will be a lot of "I wish it had" and "if it were more like", but I'm sure in the end it will be just fine. Easy for everyone to use good enough to suffice. And maybe if we're lucky, different enough in some way to make it unique over Sony and Microsofts.

As far as I know, there's nothing inherently special about the Wi-Fi adapter for DS. It's just a wireless access point that is specifically made to be compatible with the DS. And there's nothing inherently special about the Wi-Fi connection used by the DS, since it can connect to any/most wireless routers. If it doesn't work, there are certainly cheaper USB adapters you can buy.

That's one case... but I usually don't rent games I know I won't like. The only reason I'll rent them is if I can't afford to buy them but really want to play them.
It's not a big deal by any means though, now that I think about it. Chances are, I can't build up any real stats or might not bother to add friends since I'm only renting the game.
The bigger issue is the lack of WPA support. WEP sucks.

I'm very upset by friend codes, but what makes it more of a kick in the nuts if Nintendo's "COMMITMENT TO ONLINE SAFETY LOL." They could just admit they don't want to shell out for good online structure. Who even wants to play with someone who's so insanely insecure that they can't even have their voice heard? If Nintendo wanted to keep little kids from communicating, they could simply work in a parental control system like XBL. Admit it Nintendo. You don't want to pay. I would be willing to pay a subscription fee for an amazing online service. In fact, I would pay top dollar to see "friend codes" and "online safety" put in the casket. The fact that I now cannot talk to my peers in the game unless I know them in real life is just gut-wrenching.

Well, beyond the fact that there's little money to be made in offering massive downloads of the latest comic book movie tie-in, maybe what you need to do is bitch to all the parents that NIntendo is trying to playcate by setting this system up.
Also, it takes all of two minutes to get someone's code off a forum.
You're not so popular that everyone on the system will want to play with you.

I'll deal with friend codes as long as it's free. It will most likely be improved from the DS anyway and I'm sure as hell not going to pay for it, so yeah.

I don't mind the Friend Code. Now since everyone has the internet and I'm sure most gamers go on some sort of forum board, you can always find people to play with..like Strell said it takes like two minutes to get someone and if you're active on the board, possibly find non-asshole-like people.

Exactly. For free, friend codes are totally fine by me. Sure, it'd be great if there is some semblance of a universal code (one per user of a specific developer's games, perhaps) but really, friend codes are not a big deal. Use a forum, grab some people you want to play with, add them to your buddy list, and boom - you're done. Or just play a random match-up. It's free, it's fast, you're still enjoying multiplayer play. It's not the IDEAL system, sure - but no console is the ideal console. For free, this is A-OK IMHO.
