View Full Version : Final Fantasy XI Update: Now Includes Acheivements!

For the acheivement whores defending themselves in the thread below, check out this version update press release from Squeenix:
http://www.playonline.com/pcd/update/ff11us/20060725vNusN1/detail.html
The relevant part:
[For Xbox 360 version players:]
After fulfilling certain requirements, players will be able to speak with title-changing NPCs to unlock Xbox 360 “achievements.”
In the case where players have no titles available to change, they will be unable to unlock any achievements.
The screen displayed when viewing the map now has a black border, and map coordinates have become easier to read.
Now compatible to the 1024x768 screen resolution.
I dunno any more info about this, but it's nice to see that, to a small degree, Squeenix is viewing the 360 as something more than a new machine to port an old title onto.

Yeah, a lot of people bought it when it came free with that Circuit City deal. The trade forum was flooded with them.

I would think for achieving a certain level. Maybe Getting the advanced jobs. Beating a certain Notorious Monster. Doing certain quests. Shit like that. I wouldn't mind playing this game if it had a cheaper monthly fee and if Zewone was back since we tore shit up being Beastmasters in the Beta Version :)

FFXI is only online and you need a hard drive plus the monthly fee for the game
Enchanted Arms is not online

Yeah, FFXI is the exception to both of the big 360 rules. You need a hard drive to play and you need to pay a fee to play but can play with just Live Silver.
Every other game (to date) does not require the hard drive and there is no fee on top of the mandatory Live Gold for multiplayer.

There's not many options for MMOs for the 360. FFXI is a MMO and PSU is a MO.

Ah right, and I even have that one too. It only breaks one rule though, the multiplayer part. PSU at least does not require the hard drive and it does have a single player aspect.

FFXI is a ridiculous time suck. The price of the game is almost negligible compared to the time you have to spend to get anywhere in that game.

Heh, I have a sealed copy of this that's been sitting on my tradelist collecting dust since God spoke to Noah. I'm tempted to rip it open and play just for the 30 day trial, just to see how it is and maybe try for some achievements. I just cringe at the idea of paying a monthly fee and paying for Live.
I know that actually maxing out the achievements in this is said to be impossible, but does anyone know if it's possible to get even one or two within the 30 day trial?
I don't really consider myself much of an achievement whore, but that really seems to be the only thing this game can do for me at this point, and getting at least one would at least make me feel like this isn't an entirely worthless thing to have sitting on my shelf.

Let me be quite clear and say that you can not earn a single achievement in this game unless you put in 8 hours a day for that entire 30 day trial. Even then, you'll get 3-4 at the most.
This game is already a grind as is, and the achievements rank at the top of 360 games as the most absurd and difficult to get. Frankly, anyone who has 1000 points for this game should be shot on sight, or milked for their secret hacking techniques that earned those points.

For years i played this game. When i say that i really mean it...i played the ps2 beta which was released even before the pc beta here in the US.
I would get a good 200-300 achievement points and thats with my character i had since ps2 launch.
So 30 days? Not a damn chance you even sniff an achievement point.
The game isnt bad though, i'm glad i joined a ls with awesome people in which i got to conquer every aspect of end game that was interesting(shadow lord, wyrms, kings, AV) but it just sucks up too much time.
Do yourself a favor and go beat 20 short 360 games in the time it would take you to get 1 character to 75.
Is there a site you can check to see if anyone has all the points for the game? i was also interested in seeing if anyone actually came close or actually made it to the 1000. Checked over at mygamercard.net and surprisingly enough, there are 2 people that managed to pull it off

What is bad about this is, all the bad that is said about this game, I would play it, if it wasn't for the $13 a month. But, I'm not paying $13 a month to play one game here that is as old as it is. I wonder if it would be possible for them to make it $5 a month (financially). That would be about the price I would pay. Not sure the economics behind the game, but $15 is just too much of a stretch for me.

They still update the game constantly, not to mention there's a new expansion due out next month. So it has changed quite a bit over time.
I play, but I'm currently taking a break so I can play all the games coming out this Fall. My highest job is level 63 white mage.

Take it from me: (Former 75 Paladin, 75 Dark Knight, 75 Warrior)
Avoid this game. Period.
This game is a MAJOR time-sink. There's only maybe a 3% reward for the time you invest, the other 97% being a grind, yet people get so obsessed with just having "that one more" thing, that they keep playing.
Leveling from 65-75 was torture. I kept wondering, "Why don't I just quit?" but I kept thinking about all the time I invested just to get to that point. Quitting would just be a waste!
Then I started doing HNM (Hyper Notorious Monster) hunts, I started doing higher level BC's (Burning Circles), Sky and Sea and Dynamis's. Eventually it got to the point where I was playing 7 days a week for hours on end, from the time I got off work until I went to sleep, just constantly grinding, killing monsters, farming to make money. It was like a second job and a second life to look after.
It got to the point where I would go hunting for 3 hours, just to make enough money to last the week as far as supplies goes. (Food, ninjutsu tools, oils and accessories, traveling fare) And when I had to make money to make something? Like Abjuration pieces, armor for missions and to level subjobs? Christ, it was ridiculous.
Finally I decided to quit, after nearly 2.5 years of my life was in ruins. My girlfriend and I broke up, my grades sucked, I looked like a zombie, I got out of shape. I was able to sell my account for $1100 but if you think about it, had I taken a second job in those 2.5 years and spent the time I was playing working, I would've made close to 13,000 dollars.
So no, my friends, avoid this game.
If you have self restraint, sure 1-60 is "somewhat" fun, but really once you hit 60, there's no such thing as playing casual and getting anything done, unless you consider it taking 10 years to hit "max" level being a game worth playing.
By the time you "beat" this game, Playstation 5 will be out.

MITHRA POWER!!!!
Former 75 Thief, Ninja, Bard, Ranger, Red Mage, White Mage, Beastmaster, Summoner
L37+ Everything Else
L72 Black Mage (Was so pissed my lvling group stopped lvling before I hit 75)
L71 Monk (Was working on this job before I quit)
L70 Paladin (Hit 70 before they raised the cap to 75 and never really got back into it)
L37 Dark Knight (Lol didn't really like playing this job but wanted to try it as a subjob for fun)
L68 Samurai (Was slowly trying to lvl it up with pickup groups)
L45 Dragoon (Just for that damn pet lol)
L37 Warrior (All around Subjob)
Quit/Left before the new jobs were introduced.
I wish I could get my account back just so I could get a few achievements for the 360 >.< And I kinda miss the economy of FFXI... Was the only game that I actually spent more time buying/selling/trading/looking at stores then actually lvlin...

Nameless,
I actually find this a bit tough to believe in total. First off, when you started, you had to have fun with it. If you were misearable from the get go, and it stayed misearable for the first 20+ hours, you would have bailed. Even if you fel there was a "tough it out" section, you would give up after awhile.
Secondly, why would it be a waste to "give up" at a level 60? You don't get anything special for being up at 75 (though, you did sell your account). Not only that, you played a GAME for 2 years, and made money for it. All the expenses you put in, you got back and more.
If you got addicted to it, and it cost you items, it was you're fault, not the games. Not trying to be harsh, but many people have played the game and not had this happen. I'm not one of them, but you can't blame gaming anymore than it's alcohol's or gambling's fault if bad things happen while you do it. The onus falls on you.

Uh, I did have some fun. From level 1-45/50, but it's an addiction. Don't act like people can easily just drop things like this. If that were the case, why would people stay with girlfriends that mistreat them? Why would people stay at jobs where they're disrespected and underpaid? Why would people stay with family that don't benefit them? It's called attachments.
I don't deny my faults, unlike you. I can acknowledge when something grows attachment to me, but it doesn't mean I enjoyed it. It took me a year to realize I wasn't having fun and I didn't even quit immediately after.
I really doubt there's more than a handful of people that play FFXI as much as I used to, that are really ENJOYING themselves. Denial is a funny thing.
That's funny that you'd use alcohol or gambling as an example. You realize people BUILD things like that to create addiction.
Are you going to sit there and act like Square-Enix didn't actually BUILD Final Fantasy XI to try to get people addicted? The same with alcohol, cigarettes and gambling. People use the fundamental basic desires of the human body and mentality to create addictions and attachments. Grab em by their tails and don't let go.
And if you're going to deny that Square-Enix wants people to be addicted to FFXI, the same as Blizzard wants people to be addicted to World of Warcraft, then you're really naive. Sure, looking back I should've avoided it, but how was I to know better? I didn't know companies like that were goal-minded like that and no one tried to warn me. No one came out and said, "Be careful, those games are heavily addictive and have extreme time sinks." No, everyone defends their MMO to the death, and I laugh at those same persons' misfortunes when their wives/girlfriends leave them and/or they lose their jobs over it. Maybe they shouldn't have so adamantly defended such a game. If it's even to be called a game to begin with.
Sure, self restraint is a warranted defense against things like this, but "be harsh" you were not, as your points were rather menescule and unbacked.
Games like this are MADE to get people addicted. I didn't know it at first, didn't realize until it was far too late. Is partial blame mine? Yes, I can admit that, but most of the blame falls into the developers.
Stay away from this game folks.
Not to mention:
*The racism. Get used to being kicked out of parties, denied party invites, not included on key runs, skill up runs and HNM hunts whilst being told, "{English} {No thanks}". And get used to those JP-loving people that think everything Japanese people do is superior to everyone else. Japanese players are better than you, nicer than you, smarter than you, cooler than you, more original than you. It's funny because that same person gets nowhere in the community because all they are is a compliment throwing suck-up pet to Japanese players of higher caliber.
*Above and beyond - Hitting level 75 isn't anywhere near the end. Before you can do the "Level 75" things, you have to build reputation with a Linkshell, farm lots and lots of money, do a megaton of missions to get access to areas and then you have Merit Points.
No MMO company out there designed an MMO that wasn't addictive along with having time-sinks. Those are the key fundamentals to MAKING an MMO. Guild wars is the closest to an exception.

YOU got addicted, and YOU couldn't handle it. End of story. None of it was SE's fault. I've been playing the game for years, and am only now level 63 because I have priorities. In fact I haven't even played in months because during the Fall/Winter there's a ton of games that come out that I'd rather play.
If you have an addictive personality, and can't handle things like this you shouldn't be playing the game. The fault lies completely with you.

We're not talking Philip Morris here. FFXI is alive and well because of its namesake, and that's about it. If they wanted to make it genuinely addicting, they'd reduce the learning curve/grind needed to level up to do anything other than attack cronkberries or whatever the hell the low level creatures in San D'oria were, they'd remove the death penalty/experience loss entirely, and balance the game so that parties of 3-5 can feasibly camp somwhere to gain exp, instead of waiting for that miraculously great 6th WHM to appear.
Did they try to make it addicting? Sure they tried. I just don't think they succeeded. Certainly not on a grand scale.
