It drops on July 27th, 2006 - I was wondering if this might be worldwide, cause to be honest... this is my anticipated game for the 360 right now.

No... pretty sure it's not coming out in America, like almost every other shmup ever released.
Which is a shame, because it's G-Rev, and they make nice games. I bet it has some fun achievements too.

Who do I have to stab to get a shmup around here? ARG!!
My favorite is that when the Xbox 360 first came out the most played game was that shmup on Live Arcade (Cant remember the name right this second)

I saw some vids of this game in action and it looks... really damn cool, actually. I've never seen a game like this where it's essentially a fighting and shmup hybrid. This had better be region free because there's no way in hell this'd actually come out over here.

Chacrana, looks like we're the dying breed. No more 2d and Shmups for us. =(
I get we should prepare our thumbs for overly complicated controls, yet overly simplistic gameplay games like Prey.
Its a Jump button! But you never use it!

The jump button is a must for getting through the seven trials at the end of Prey.
I think the best chance we have for SHMUPs here in the US is XBLA. Hopefully some will appear there.

I can live with it as long as the PS2's around in Japan. I've probably played more 2D games and shmups this year than any other year thanks to the sheer number of those games that are hitting the system.
I really wish that MS would let a game like this through in the US though. Does it have what it takes to be a million seller? No. But does it have the ability to broaden the types of games available to current and potential Xbox 360 owners? Yes, it does. I'm truly sick of the typical corridor shooter so I'd like to see something different rather than another bog standard FPS.

Don't suppose there's any way to trick the US 360 into thinking it's Japanese, is there?
I fucking hope that the Wii and the PS3 are region free... I'm getting sick of these workarounds.

It's because they think the average 360 owner will dryhump any FPS which is what convinced the average RPG player and OTHER players to some extent NOT to buy an XBox when the only exclusives they had here for the most part were either PC games or FPS's.
Fighter? I don't know. Senko no Rondo kind of seems like taking a shooter then for the close up I'm reminded specifically of Virtual On.

I'll get this soon probably. Game looks incredible and the Japs seem to love it. Only thing keeping me from buying it is the $60 price tag... what was Ubi thinking?
Edit: Also, nobody will buy this. This has zero appeal to anyone. And did Ubi change anything in the trip over? Like changing the music to the Black Eyed Peas or whatever those crazy kids are into nowadays?

I'll probably have some impressions of it late tonight.
EDIT: I'm sitting through the intro of the game now. Doesn't look like Ubisoft changed anything. Obviously there are english subs, but the audio track is in Japanese.

My impressions so far of "Senko No Ronde"
I haven't put much time into it, seeing as I got it a couple hours ago. I am really enjoying it so far. The controls haven't been an issue for me so far. Overall the controls do feel like I'm playing a shmup 99% of the time. Sure it's not fluid as a pure fighter, but they've been effective enough for me to dodge bullets and get out of another rounder's ("mech") sight.
I don't mind that there are only 8 characters to choose from, all of them seem to play different, each with their own bullet styles and such. Close range attacks seem very minimal in this game, but they do cause a lot of damage. So in the game I'm guessing there should be more of a focus on dodging and the shmup style of things rather than the dash and mash technique, which sometimes works.
As far as difficulty goes, it's up there with a lot of what shmup fans are expecting. It's high even on the lower settings in the game. After playing the fighter/shmup mix for 6 stages (how long the story mode lasts), it was a treat to see how the final stage was done. I don't want to ruin it, but it's rather cool and frustrating at the same time :)
The art style and visuals/presentation is fantastic. I do appreciate that Ubisoft decided to keep the original Japanese audio for this game and have the option of either English or Japanese subtitles. That little thing makes the game even more enjoyable. Oh also it should be mentioned that each character has 3 or so variations once you choose them on the character selection screen. Their portraits and their rounders look completely different. Not sure yet if they play any differently or if it's just a visual mod.
Every character also has a special move where they can transform into a "B.O.S.S" (those big ass ships you've seen in videos). You aren't able to move around much but it automatically transforms the game into a pure shmup game. The strategy in using those is sort of neat. If you use it too often, you drain your meter and can't use secondary weapons like missles and so on. If you decide to use it and barely hit your opponent (many B.O.S.S modes have easy to dodge moves), you are at a disadvantage then. It's also worth mentioning that both players cannot use "B.O.S.S" mode at the same time, so again it makes things interesting, as well as flipping things to the shmup side.
Is it worth $60? I'm terrible at those kind of questions.

after a couple more hours spent with this game, I have to say I'm addicted
I've been working my way through the "Score Attack" mode with each character, learning which one suits me the best. So far I have to say my favorite characters are Mika and Changpo. Mika's homing missles open up the game to some serious (and confusing) rushdown techniques. I also really like how much damage Changpo is able to dish out up close.
For anyone who is curious there are 8 characters in the game. Each character has 3 different colors/costumes and two different rounder variations. When I first got the game I didn't know if the rounder variations had different stats, but after a couple of hours of playing I realized they do.
(STATS):
*Speed
*Fire
*Close
*Defense
I also played my first couple games over XBL tonight as well. I played a couple people from Japan, who just utterly destroyed me. I also played against a couple of U.S players that kept the matches close and really enjoyable.
Really wish that this game wasn't $60, so that more people would pick it up to play online and offline. The game really isn't for everyone, but I am really glad that I picked it up.

Great game. I just wish it were cheaper so that more people would buy it. I tried to play online three times yesterday and no one was online two of those times. = /
Worth $60? I'm bad at that question, too... if you only buy one or two full-price games a month, I probably wouldn't recommend this one.

So how much depth is there in this game? I'm just concerned that it's going to be "HEY FLY AROUND AND SHOOT SOMETIMES" and that's it. If there's a lot of technique involved in playing effectively though, then I'm in at $60 still.

I'm liking it too so far, even though I'm pretty mediocre at it >.< I'm going to have to practice more. The last boss that was mentioned earlier kicked the crap out of me until I figured out certain strategies (which have to be different depending on the character you're using). Which I actually like. It makes you actually plan out an attack, and it's satisfying when it works. So far I've beaten story mode with two of the characters.
I'm scared to play it on Live. I'd get completely destroyed T.T

That sort of technique does work against the computer sometimes.
When playing on Live though, I noticed (especially with the Japanese players) there was a lot of strategy to the game. I tried to just shoot missles the whole time with Mika, rushing in while my opponent would try to either dodge or barrier, and do a close-up attack. It worked a couple times until I was getting to predictable and eventually died.
Almost all of the Japanese players I played against were choosing Sakurako. She doesn't seem to give much damage up close, but she has a really crazy distance game. It got to the point where I was playing against Sakurako players that would keep me at a far distance, where I couldn't even get close to them, then commence to throw 25-46 hit combos on me.
So a very long answer to a very simple question, IMO there is depth. You can get away with simple techniques with the computer, but against human opponents, you can't get away with that mashy shit :)
Knowing when to use secondary weapons (reloads are long), when to use B.O.S.S mode, how to conserve your charge meter, dashing, make the game a lot deeper than it looks. I also found out if you use your B.O.S.S mode while your armor is complete gone, it opens up some sort of last-ditch effort mini-game thing.
I'm terrible at describing things. Just keep reading around/doing research, I hate to be even partly-responsible for someone feeling like they wasted $60.
kainzero
05-24-2007, 04:56 PM
I still hate boss mode. If you're at danger level, where 1 hit kills you, your boss mode gets buffed up. If you get taken out in boss mode, you die, which only happens if your boss mode sucks. Because of this, it gets kinda shady in a close game. If you have half health and you bring the opponent down to danger, you probably won't survive if they boss you. It also becomes a little race to see who can boss first in closer matches. Activation of boss mode also knocks out all the bullets on the screen, so it's even more of a last ditch thing.
Anyway, I found this cool strategy guide. I was gonna write a bunch of stuff up about it but this already covers nearly everything.

I just got in about an hour of gameplay in and I'm definitely digging this game. I wouldn't just flat out spend $60 on it though, $40 seems like a good price point or if you have stuff to trade in its a good game to pick up.
I pretty much have no clue what the hell I'm doing though. I kinda wish they had american voice acting, the original voices is cool and all but its too chaotic to look down and read whats being said it would be nice if I could hear it instead.
I also kind of wish there was an option to turn B.O.S.S. mode off for online play.
EDIT:
Has anyone looked at the achievements for this game? one you have to play 100 hours. And I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to get these online ranked ones when japanese people have had the game far longer than us. I kinda wish our leaderboards were seperate from theirs and same goes with online matches. Every match I play against some japanese kid I get my ass handed to me.

It should've been near $30-40 in JPN considering how low tech it is and I then consider a lazy and cheap port job by those regards could be done.

Like most new or quirky titles my EB/GS won't have it for at least a few more days due to the timing of the Game Days sale. It doesn't matter much anyway since while this was originally a MUST PURCHASE game for me at a presumed MSRP of $30 or $40, $60 is just far and away too much.
It's a shame, though. I am really big on paying full price for worthwhile SHMUPs in order to support future ports but I'm not going to pay an unreasonable MSRP towards that effort.

Big note: THE MANUAL's MOVE ALL HAVE A TYPO IN THEM! Where-ever the manual says "B" in movelist, it means "X". X and Y are your main weps, and pushing both together uses your central weapon. It's ALOT like Virtual On.

Like I said I have not played the game since June. I guess I was wrong.
But now that I looked it up it is for barrage attacks. You need to use it with another button to do different attack patterns. Sorry for the mix up.
If you have the book check the move list for each character. I do not think it will do anything by itself unless you use it in a combo to do a barrage attack.

After so much talk about the game here, I fought quite a few players this morning, around 9 AM eastern time, on live. Mostly Japanese, a few Americans too, though. Wasn't too hard to find games at all.
Those japanese players are awesome, though. You can tell they had specific play strats for taking on each type of opponent. I had an amazingly hard time getting through their well-played defenses.
Definitely makes me want to get back into the game even more, now. So much strategy to refine...
