You can't just put their reviews under this whole '1up.com' banner, and like I said before...yes, if this score came from someone like Milky or Shoe, I might find something suspect in it.
Actually, yes you can. As someone who checks review sites and doesn't pay attention to the reviewer, the review given is the review the site gives.
I don't give a shit if "Gamer Stud" gave the game a 2 when the rest of the site would have given it an 8, if a 2 is posted that is what the site gives. I understand that some people are going to have a variance in what they give (one person gives a 7.3 when another gives 7.8), but there needs to be some consistency to the scores or the trust in those scores go out the window.
That's like saying that McDonald's is good only when Bruits is cooking, but when Harold is cooking it's bad .... there has to be consistency or all credibility goes out the window.

ah well gotta wait till tomorrow, none of the 5 Gamestops in town are getting it today and even if they do they're not putting it on shelves till morning...bastards
That's interesting since I got a call last night saying my LE would be in this afternoon. I wouldn't be surprised if I called and they say it'll be in tomorrow since the ship date was today. Either way, I'm a bit psyched for this game.

They've done that to me in the past, was the call automated? I remember when Gears came out, they called me on the Monday for Tuesday pickup, wasnt there Tuesday, called me AGAIN on Tuesday for Wednesday, wasnt there Wednesday, no call Wed, there Thurs

Yeah from the review it seams that it is a little repetitive and suffers from beautiful level that don't have much variety. The combat and atmosphere sound amazing but the constant information "fetch" missions might kill this for me too.
I'll defiantly play this one but it sounds like a very good rental.
My bet is an 8.8 grom IGN and a solid 8.5 from GS.

Well, I'm sure you can get Assassin's Creed later in the week if they don't have it tonight. The closest TRU to me is like 35 mins away, so that's why I'm hoping they have both tonight, as I don't feel like making 2 trips, but I have to ensure I at least get Galaxy tonight for the gift card.

It's pretty sad when we're discussing if they spoil the twist at the beginning when everyone and their brother already knows what the twist is.
Actually no I don't. and I am glad I don't. And please keep this thread clear of spoilers.

Buying Galaxy at Toys R Us and getting the $25 gift card. Then using the gift card to purchase Assassin's Creed for $35 instead of $60.

7.9 from TeamXbox
http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1428/Assassins-Creed/p1/
"....shiny and multifaceted, but deeply flawed"
They've even got some of the future setting screenshots. That aspect of the story makes perfect sense to me in one regard, it will allow sequels to take place in other time periods.

I don't mind the sci-fi aspect to the plot, but those goofy flashes that interrupt the gameplay so often is a real detractor. I find them very disruptive.

Damn, this game fell faster than Brittany Spears career.
I am not surprised that underneath the hood this games falls short.
It sound way to good to be true. I was so impressed by the preview a while back but something always irked me about it. I couldnt figure out what you did in between the assassinations. I knew the game wouldnt allow you just to go kill who ever you wanted at any time a la Crackdown but no one ever said what you were suppose to do in the down time.
I guess now I know.....the same thing over and over and over again.
I will still pick this up...but not if its over 30 bucks or so. This just fell way down on the list. Hopefully Kane and Lynch will delivery.
Hopefully in sheer irony...Assassins creed (game with tons of hype) will fail and Kane and Lynch (game with no hype at all ) will be great.

Yeah, I'm still getting it since it's the only game on my radar to combine with the TRU Galaxy deal, so I don't mind paying $30 or so for it.
The fact that it seems really hit and miss with the gaming reviewers leads me to believe I'll like it too, which is another plus. :)

Ubisoft's games have a history of sometimes dropping pretty quickly in price. I think all of the PoPs went down significantly within 6-8 weeks. Along with those low review scores I will hold out buying this one for a bit.

No written review yet, and the video review didn't give it a score, but I didn't listen to all of it (just beginning and end since I want to avoid spoilers).
I had thought about the price drop too, but like I said before, there isn't anything else I'd really use the TRU gift card on, so it's basically getting the price drop now.

Here is what I dont get though.
AC is suppose to be very creative and original but as a few flaws. Repetition is one that is said the most.
But these are the same people who bust a 2 nuts and a gut when Halo 3 dropped. Halo 3 which is basically a carbon copy of one and two with a horrid storyline that ends in a cop out. Horrid AI for your team mates..but it got 9's across the board.
If you like Halo 3 or not you can not deny its basically the same thing as the first 2 games with little innovation. Adding more guns to a FPS...yeah thats super original.
This is why I hate the fucking gaming industry. Any time a producer tries to think outside the box and try something new, reviewer will rip it apart and apparently forget that its harder to make an original game so you might what to cut them a break.
But HOLY SHIT MONKEY....UN REAL CALL OF HALO BIO TIMESPLITTERS 43543 IS COMING OUT...ZOMG THIS TIME THEIR SHOOTING DEAD BABIES OUT OF THEIR GUNS NOW!!!!! ARRAGAGHAGH.
FPS have been the same for 20 years but every time one comes out reviewers shit a brick at the awesomeness of it.
This is why we get 3 or 4 sequels to video games...and why 45 FPS come out a year. Producers are to scared to do anything else....FPS are the safe bet.
Bah.
EDIT:
I just think that people forget that when you go to make an truely orignal game...it takes some time to think up and then program each part of it. I mean..by the time they figured out how to even do the Free run programming you most likely could have thought up, programmed, and be well into the beta testing fo a FPS.
The code for FPS have been laid out for years now...most of them dont even use their own engine...they just mooch off the Unreal engine. So of course there is going to be some hiccups...but its never been done before.

I think you are extremely incorrect. This game has a metacritic average of 83 so far... That is a great score. You are taking this way out of hand. Why do you give a fuck anyway? If you like a game get it, it not, don't... Reviews have nothing to do with you.

Alrightly there buck o.
No I am not taking this way out of hand. I was simply stating my opinion on what I feel the gaming industary does. No matter how you look at it...games that are truely orignal are reviewed harshly because most of the time they have some irks in them. Thats fine.
The problems that FPS which are a dime a million seem to get graded pretty high even if it doesnt bring anything but more levels and different guns to the table.
Now as for reviews...I rarely ever consider them....my reason are stated above. As for the genric dumbass "Why the fuck do you care" statement as comes whenever anyone ask a question about reviewers.....uhh were on a video game website...talking about videogames. I care enough to visit this website....you seem to also since you are here to.
EDIT:
By the way. Anyone who says, "why the fuck do you care...dont listen to reviewers" that is really a small minded outlook. Yes its true that I could really care less about what a reviewer has to say......but Game Companies do. Reviews are a critical part in the gaming industry. You can see as well as I do when companies go crazy over reviews. Lair for example had horrid reviews and Sony when insane because of it. Even sending out "How to review Lair" books to websites.
Its not that I care what reviews have to say....its Companies do. So every time an original game gets a bad review (and I am not saying that AC reviews are that bad yet....but in general) it makes companies less willing to risk doing other original games. Hence we get 50 FPS a year. Hence my whole problem with reviews.

I think sales of AC will do well enough to support the creation of a sequel and a correction to all of the gripes gamers/reviewers have of this title. The game engine is built and the team has a great platform to start a sequel or build another game off of the work done in AC.

:applause:
Thats all I was saying. When you make an original game that you actually have to kinda invent programming for it might take 1 or 2 games to become perfect.
Reviewers might want to just cut some games a bit of a break and not label it the most disappointing game of the year thus making developers less likely to venture out of the box next go round.
Especially when they hand out 9's and 10's to FPS like hot cakes.
Just think of all the titles like phyconaunts (sp) Grim Fandago that didnt even get off the idea page because some big wig said...no FPS get an average of 9's and 10's make another one of thus but set it in space so it seems new.
All I am saying.

You have to keep in mind, FPS is a very well established genre, and theres only so many improvements or advances that can be made. Assassins Creed may be new, and in certain areas groundbreaking, however, its still very flawed, and of course the scores are going to reflect that.

Seriously, WTF? Are these guys even playing the same game?
What really irks me was something I saw in the GT review. While in "casual" mode, you see him come up to a guard and just stab him in the back right in the light of sight of the other guard and yet, the guard acted like his buddy just fell down. He goes over to check his buddy with Alier (sp?) standing RIGHT NEXT TO HIS BUDDY! Then he gets stabbed in the back because the A.I looks to be so stupid.

I just watched the IGN video review of this and it sounds like his major gripes with the game are exactly what it set out to do. "You have to evesdrop on a person, this is done by simply taking a seat, targeting the person, and listening in ...", well no SHIT, did you think he was going to use his Spidey senses to hear the conversation. I like how he bitches that in order to get away from guards that you have to break their line of site and wait in a pile of hay for 15 seconds -- isn't this pretty much how they do it in MGS except it's a locker?
Essentially it sounds like the reviewer's bitch with the game is that you actually have to do some investigation before the assassination, welcome to realizm (this isn't Hitman). Either way, the review made me even more psyched for this game.

Yeah that IGN review seamed like he took something so personally. He kept complaining about the same 3 things over and over and went on and on about it. Heck based on the text I was surprised it got as high a score as it did.

I'm going to cancel my preorder. I'd hate to be a tool and trust generic "critics," but I've been reading Eurogamer for years and Tom's always had good tastes, and his criticisms (and praise) seem more than valid. Strangely, IGN wrote by far the most scathing review of the game (calling it possibly one of the 5 most dissapointing games OF ALL TIME!!!), but gave it a 7.7. It's like they're afraid if they give it anything lower than a lukewarm review they'll risk losing their fans. There actually may be some (minor) bit of truth to that, but they're losing their crediblity giving a game a negative review and then tacking on a positive score just to keep the peace.
Gametrailers gave it a 9.1, but even their review sounded more like a high 7, or low 8 at best. I mean he spends a good third of the review talking about all the things the game did wrong.
The game still looks fun as a rental. Pretty much everyone agrees that the game starts out amazing with the running, and the climbing, and the grandiose visuals, but quickly bogs down to a series of repetitive and mundane missions that play out the same way.
I mean there's something fundamentaly wrong about a game where you play as an assassin in a sandbox environment, yet must follow a scripted approach to assassinating your targets. I was hoping for a mix between Crackdown and Hitman, but it sounds more like a buggy (albiet pretty) version of Crackdown. What a waste of potential.

I agree. I went to three different places today just because usually vendors release their games on Tuesday. None of them had it, saying that they haven't even gotten it in yet (as of Tuesday 4 p.m. PST). Doesn't make much sense to tell consumers when the company has shipped it out.
As for the game, I'm kind of glad I didn't buy it after the tepid reviews. Seems to be more of a rental from Gamefly.

I think it is a little different. I didn't like halo 3 sp and never played the others but at least within halo 3 there are different aspects to the gameplay. You can drive, fly, shoot. The level designs are different between many.
The complaints about this game even from the 100 review(how can you have a complaint and give it perfect but whatever) is that the way you complete all of the assassinations in the game is EXACTLY the same and the cities. although supposedly different...look almost the same.
So yeah I can see the difference.

Gamestops had them but preorder only and they did not get all of the preorders and were hoping to get them for tomorrow and they were unsure about haveing them for tomorrow. Bah, reviews. They're half love and half hate, so you'll either fall madly in love with the game or you won't. For all the original ideas in this game (in addition to all the awesome gameplay videos I've seen), I'm more than willing to pick it up and take the risk.
Also, answering my question from a few pages back, regarding the PS3 version vs the 360 version: PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash.

Well unless I can get to Best Buy by 2 pm tomorrow and get the LE I will not be geting this for some time. Everyplace I have looked at online has sold out of Assassin's Creed Limited Edition. Best Buy online has it but chances are it will be sold out in the next day or so. First game all year that I have wanted that I did not pre order I can not find any place. All others I really did not need to preorder so I didnt think I needed to this one. Guess I was way off on that.

FPS have been the same for 20 years but every time one comes out reviewers shit a brick at the awesomeness of it.
You're right. When I reached the final level of Halo 3 last night, I was very surpsied that the last boss wasn't a mechanized Adolf Hitler. Those wizards at Bungie have done it again!
Sarcasm off, that is a severely asinine statement. One could argue that many game genres have been the same for 20 years, and that the 'devil' is in fact not 'in the details'. However, one chooses not to.

Wow....I've honestly never seen more mixed reviews for a game in my life. I already got the game pre-ordered but always just like to QUICKLY read through reviews from different places on all games I'm interested in. I think some people might just say F-this game because of some harsh reviews but reading just a couple of reviews from a few well known sources, I'm not sure why anyone would cancel this pre-order. Check this out:
GameSpot-
"Assassin's Creed will stay with you long after you finish it. Here is one of the most unique gameworlds ever created: beautiful, memorable, and alive. Every crack and crevasse is filled with gorgeous, subtle details, from astounding visual flourishes to overheard cries for help. But it's more than just a world--it's a fun and exciting action game with a ton of stuff to do and places to explore, rounded out with silky-smooth controls and a complex story that will slowly grab you the more you play. Make no mistake: Assassin's Creed is one of the best efforts of the year and a must-own game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners.Assassin's Creed is the kind of game you tell your friends about, and one that should be in your collection."
Gamepro-
"Take a leap of faith with Assassin's Creed and you will be rewarded with one of the finest gaming experiences ever created!"
I know those are just a couple of GOOD things said and none of the bad, but honestly how can remarks like that not have or get gamers interested in playing it. At the end of the day we all know it just comes down to our own opinion of the game. Still, wow, like I said earlier...crazy there's such mixed reviews when some reviews say remarks like that.

Two questions:
Does anyone have a link to a picture of the opened LE packaging and figure? The one that's being sold at Gamestop?
And is there any way to still get a copy of the CE (or whatever version) that has the 12" Altair figure?

No, its not. Your assessment of it is though. But I am not going to go into it again. Every time I make a point...one of you counters it with something off the wall and random as fuck.

Honostly, when I read your post, that line stuck out the most because it was so far off base. Anyways, reviewers score games based on the merit of the title (in theory). You don't get 'cut a break' because its an orignal title thats 'harder to make' (which I don't buy for an instant) - quality games take time and effort regardless if its an original IP or not.
Sorry that you disagree with the reviews, but in the end they don't mean squat. Go enjoy the game. Software developers arn't going to stop trying to make orignal games simply because one game gets reviewed 1 or 2 points lower than you think it deserves.

Gametrailers gave it a 9.1, but even their review sounded more like a high 7, or low 8 at best. I mean he spends a good third of the review talking about all the things the game did wrong.
Agreed! The beginning of the video review was like "Oh thats sort of new" and then by the end he started showing a ton of bad things (and GameFAQa has revealed other cons, such as no nighttime setting, uniform weather) and I felt bored just watching the video by the end of it. It just looked to repetitive, and the sword fights looked disengage.

I'm much more willing to invest in a game that aims high and falls a little short than one that hits a solid mark on a well-tread path.
Not that both kinds aren't good, everyone has different tastes, naturally. For me, I like to see something a bit original. I'll forgive technical issues if the game comes up with something unique.

I'm thinking Gamestop/EB bought the rights to have this game in store on the 13th. I went to Best Buy, Curcit City, Walmart, Target, a local store(Slackers CDs and Games), and 2 Gamestops and called another. All but the Gamestops did not have them. Gamestops had them but preorder only and they did not get all of the preorders and were hoping to get them for tomorrow and they were unsure about haveing them for tomorrow. So this game is sold out at one of the few places that was selling it and others cant sell till the 14th at 2 pm. I hate to order online but if I can not get the collectors edition at best buy tomorrow I'm ordering online or saying screw it.
All the Gamestops near me told me the game will be released tomorrow (Wednesday). All other places say the 15th is when the game is scheduled to be released. So maybe Gamestop does have an exclusive release, but it's tomorrow, not today.

Yes, unfortunately a lot of people do. It's really sad how spoiled today's gamers are.
I think IGN AU's (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/835/835134p1.html) review is very interesting, as it directly addresses IGN US's review.
Their closing comments:
Do yourself a favour; play Assassin's Creed for yourself and make up your own mind. Chance are, if you go in with an open mind and lowered expectations, you're going to walk away very satisfied on most fronts. Regardless, it's an adventure that, for all the self-important dialogue and forced morality, is unquestionably worth your time - particularly for fans that can differentiate between action/platformers and stealth/RPGs.

Pretty much how I feel.
I know movies and games are obviously different but if you read movie reviews and don't watch a movie cause it has bad reviews, I think that's ridiculous and you'd be missing out. For example, tonight I watched Death Proof and if you look at the reviews there's more bad then good by far...but honestly WOW what a bad ass movie that was. We all know at the end of the day it's what our own opinion on something is that counts in whatever (games, movies, etc.). Rent AC if you have doubts, obviously you have interest in the game or you wouldn't be looking up the reviews in the first place.

I'm a little torn but, I think I'll still pick this up later in the week. The game, graphically, looks gorgeous. My main concern was how it plays and it seems universal that it plays well. I can accept that it's the same kind of fun over and over so long as it's done right.
Heck, Gears was the the same 5 minutes of fun for 5 hours and I still enjoyed that. So I'll probably give Assassin's a chance.

Yeah well forgive me, I'm not going to pay 60 dollars for a game that is getting mixed reviews until I know enough people that like it. I'll let you fan boys have that experience. The only person I know that has it doesn't think is is worth the money because there is no variety in the gameplay and he's already tired of hiding in bails of hay. It would require effort. I'd have to go sign up for blockbuster or something. Better just to wait until some people that I know get it and try it to see if it is even worth it. There's too many good games out right now and that I have pre-ordered next week to worry about it too much. Basically if a game gets mixed reviews now, I can't bother with it for a few months....VF5, COD4, Mass Effect, Rock Band

No it doesnt have to be 100% across the board but if i'm going to pay $60 (No FRY's) it damn well better be. That combined with me getting Mass Effect next week and a bunch of other games to still play means I can wait on this game and play it later. From the sounds of the reviews there will be alot of used copies when people beat this game due to no replay value

For me, it's all about playability. I get about 2 - 4 hours worth of gaming in a week so I need something that I can go back to and have fun; Oblivion is a good example of this. I don't care if I play for an hour or two and need to put it down, as long as I can come back to it in a week or a month I'm good. For me, Bioshock is like this - play for an hour then get bored of it, but I still come back to it.

Out of the tins the I have bought and know of this one actually has the game in the game case like you would buy normaly. I actually called ahead, even though I had already convinced myself they would have it. I asked the lady on the phone if they had it, then I heard her turn to another employee and ask if they had any copies of "Assnin's Green" (She was an idiot, btw). She told me not until tomorrow.
I didn't believe her because 1) She was an idiot, 2) I was pretty damn sure it was supposed to be out today. So I called again and got a different lady, only this time she said they had it. So I drove there, and when I got to the counter, the guy said "We have them in stock, but I can't sell them until tomorrow." Normally, I would've accepted the facts and left, but this was the same guy that literally yelled at me when I asked if they had broken the street date for Bioshock. So, since me and this guy weren't exactly "friendly" towards each other, I bitched at him until he gave me a copy. I don't like to be a 'pain in the ass' customer, but my TRU really sucks...

I thought the LE was worth it but you really don't get all that much. Atleast not as much as I thought you would. Best Buy said you get a small guid for the game and that I was in with the game. From what the case said it was in it but the way things look every place will get the guid so it is not a best buy only thing. To me it was worth it but more should have been added. Atleast the game comes in the normal case and not just put in the tin like most are.
As for the game and the reviews. I have not read any of them and didn't really keep up with the game other then what was on G4 at e3. Something had told me that the game would be like it is. I still said you have to be joking when I started playing it.
***Do not read if you have not played the first 30 minutes of the game or do not want to see some sort of spoiler. I only say this because I have said something that to me changes the game big time. More then any other spoiler for a game and dont want people to bitch. If you have played the first 30 minutes or so then nothing after that has been spoiled. I'm only about that far into the game myself.***
This game could have been so much beter if it was not for the searching dna story line of it. In the e3 videos you could see that the people would glitch and that told me something then. I knew something odd was up with this game because them were not normal glitches and I have never heard of something like that happening in a game. After playing it and in the first minute or so of the game I knew it was some sort of computer program you were in. It would have been so nicer if it was not like that

So....the game is good other than the plot line (which is your opinion) and repetition?
The problem I am running into is this. This game was hyped to be the second coming of Jesus....its not BUT just because its not a 10 out of 10 is it still a pretty good game.

The game is great other then the twist but if you forget that I would have to say this game is a 9 from what I have played so far. It starts slow but seems like it picks up quickly.
Fortunately, the "twist" was so poorly inserted into the game that it's actually rather easy to just ignore.

I got a chance to play it for about 90 minutes today.
The graphics are pretty amazing; From the architecture to the draw distance to the character animation, this title wows me. I am a self-admitted framerate whore and have not seen an instance of framerate drop.
The title does seem very linear- go here, do one of five or six mission, now go to the next waypoint. Climbing is fun as hell. Combat is still fun, but I think it will get old soon. It doesn't seem organic enough, instead it's rather binary.
Voice acting is pretty good except for the main character; Some of the accents are fake, but the worst is the voice of the main character, he sounds way too surferish to be in Jerusalem 1200 AD.
Recommendation: Continue on with R&C, COD4 and Super Mario Galaxy and wait for the inevitable price drop on this one. This would have been a stellar title in the dull drums of August, but In November, there are too many compelling games to run out and buy this one.

I love the Plot, its definetally interesting and makes me curious on what the hell is going on. And it's a nice break after running around killing people for hours straight.
The game is really great and acctually is better then what I thought it would be. I just love how you have to ride to each city.
My only complaints are that the Glowing Enemies STILL annoy me, ergh, why'd they have to do that!? It takes away from the game, instead of having a human guard chasing you, you have a glowing robot chasing you...
And at first the Side missions were lots of fun and were really cool... but they are all the same and once you get to the 2nd city you'll be like, "Uhm... the same side missions still? Really?"
I just hope it changes up eventually.
And how do you assassinate a target while jumping on top of him from a ledge? I cant do it...

How are the load times? I know the PS3 version initially takes about 3 mins for it to install on the HDD, and after that, there's hardly any load times. Does the 360 version suffer from any long load times, specifically on start up?
I got the limited edition last night, they drove up a bunch of copies from Chicago, only for those who reserved them.
Does anyone else think that the sound that you hear when you collect each of the twenty flags for the assassin sound exackly like the sound that you hear when you collect one of those gold stone things (I forget what they're called) in the first Turok for N64?
Game is pretty good.
But the tin for the limited edition is just HUGE, it has so much space still left in it when everything is in there.

what kind of side missions are there?
Are they kind of like Spiderman 2 where random people on the street ask you to do the same things over and over again? .....Cuz I found that to be pretty fun actually. After awhile you start figuring out different ways to jack around in the game lol
anyone have pics of the LE?

Did you get the LE? I'm heading out to pick mine up and was wondering what you thought of the figure that came with it.
I just got the regular edition, but GS was giving out little hardback (Art of Creed) books. Rather worthless.
Game is pretty damn good so far, the one thing I HATE is the voice acting for Altair, the actor sounds like they just pulled some jackass off the street to do it, whereas everyone else seems to fit. He sounds like a dumbass.

I'm obviously in a minority here but I don't mind the Twist at all, I think it was ballsy and kind of cool.
Without it, this game would have had to be named "Prince of Persia: The Crusades". And no, that wouldn't have been a good thing.

The twist/timeline fits if they ever want to do Assassin's Creed in another setting/time period. I don't mind that aspect at all, the gameplay is what matters and while I'm only shortly in (I just got to Damascus) I really like it so far.
Altair's voice actor should be shot and whoever hired him should never be allowed to cast a game actor again, he's probably banging Jade, only way I can see the idiot getting cast.
It's going to sell through the roof because of the hype (its already Gold) so a sequel is inevitable.

That's a pretty disappointing LE, but then again I bought the CoD4 CE and that was just an art book and behind the scenes DVD. Couldnt help it though since I got it for $55 anyway.
The nice thing about getting the game a day early was that the worker at gamestop didn't ask me if I wanted the strategy guide for another twenty bucks, since they didn't have it.

 I had Kane and Lynch pre-ordered when I went to pick up Assassins today, but I had decided to cancel it as Im getting it from Yourfree360games instead, so I used the (thought) surefire excuse of "I cant afford it right now, just gimme Assassins" to stop him from asking if I wanted to wait, but the guy still tried to upsell me to the LE AND the strat guide. Maybe he knew I was lying, but their upselling is really annoying.

Some insight to all the bad reviews about AC. I am sure it wont change anyone minds entirely but at least it gives you another aspect.
EDIT:
By the fucking way. Notice how in the GT review he immediately starts talking about how FPS are the low risk and generally hight scoring, while original games are treated as "going out on a limb" titles.
I believe I was trying to make that very same comparison. Though it might not have been in the best of phrasing but it was the topic I was speaking about.

Initial load times are about 20 sec. In game load between regions are 'disguised'. You have control of your character in an empty realm (no location nor enemies). They are about 10 seconds or so.

It has it's problems, and it isn't perfect. But this game very much is a high 8 or 9.

I would agree with that.
I just put about 3 solid hours + 2 from this afternoon. I finally decided to start the assassinations and completed the first, and am now in Acre.
I definitely am enjoying it. There are flaws that can't be denied, I can tell the repetition is going to get boring as the game goes on, there is not going to be much variety in terms of the leadup to kills, however, I can tell I am going to have a lot of fun planning the kills and replay is there for trying them again.
It's got some genius to it. The control scheme is AWESOME. Once you get it down (5 minute learning curve) its almost second nature.
The biggest flaw to me as of now is still that damn voice actor for Altair. He just doesnt fit with the great voice acting that is present. The lack of music is a bit eh as well.
I'd say a solid 8 right now. Depending on how it plays out I could see it going to a 9 or down to as low as 6-7 though.

I do find the game very cute for how politically correct it is.
I love how they had to replace Saladin with some other dude. Of course you could argue that you belong to a different group of assassins than Saladin, but the parallels are erie, such as calling him 'old man' as in old man of the mountain, and the fact that he lives in a huge fortress carved into a mountain.
They can't say "praise alah" they have to say "praise somerandomname".
They also can talk a lot about the evil christian crusaders, but you never once hear any mention of Mohomed, Islam itself or any islamic docterine.... It's left incredibly vague. I think it's safe to say Ubisoft was afraid of one religion and not of another :)
Anyway, just some random observations. Liking the game a lot though.

You know what the game is like to me? It's like the Control's team and the Art (and all its aspects) and the sound team go together and made this game great, they worked really hard and made the TRIPLE A title they wanted to, made it the game of the year.
Then the Quest team and HUD team came in late laughing not taking it serious and slapped together some side quests and hud. "Hmmm, how can we tell what Atliar is looking at? I know, why dont we make everything glow really brightly?" "Great idea! And lets just make a side quest where you have to save a peasant repeatedly. Nothing else. Just saving Peasants." "GENIOUS!"
They really couldnt think of any other side quests to help peasants? Why not a quest where you have to distract the guards (either by killing them, fighting them, or making them run away) while they try to steal something from behind them. Or help a group of civilians start a revolt against another group of guards. Or help some civilians fight another group of civilians. Or a civilian asks for his money back so you have to go interrogate someone. Or a civilian needs you to tell some news to another civilian across the city without the guards knowing.
They could really only think of Saving a Civilian from 3 guards for no random reason?

The voice acting is still annoying, its kinda like Kevin Costner's Robin Hood in a sense, a bunch of actors of a certain nationality (aside from Christian Slater and the chick, but throw them out) and Zack Morris as the lead guy.

Well I think I've put in enough time with it to be happy with my purchase. Sure there are the little repetative side-quests that don't really have substance, but the combat is just really fun. It's definately a collection-fan's game, with all those damn flags.
I really don't get how people can find the controls complicated. I love how simple free running is.
archibishopthedoge

The controls are arguably one of the best things about the game, and its far more than sidequests that are repetitive ALL the investigations are repetitive, its the same thing every kill --- choose 2-3 of informer, pickpocket, eavesdrop, interrogate etc.
and Im sick of saving citizens but I do it to shut up the repetitive banter "Help me!!" "Die Thief!"
The combat is fun though, its very realistic swordplay but there is a lot of repetition with every kill, it also seems to lack a challenge, all of my deaths have been falls lol.
I am not getting tired of leaps of faith or climbing though.

Im also 5-7 hours in, heres my statistical review thus far, on kill #5
STORY: 8
GRAPHICS: 9.5 overall, 10 for draw distances and detail, I don't like the graphics after a kill though. Same thing could've been accomplished with sepia or something similar rather than the isolation technique they used. Altairs animations are fantastic.
SOUND: 6.5, the same things being said over and over start to get annoying after a while, story dialogue is great (aside from Altairs voice), lack of music in dramatic parts is noticably missing and would've added to some of the suspense. The goofy sound (sounds almost like the save/go to sleep tone in FFVII) after/just before a leap of faith does not fit in this game. Effects (swords etc) are very good.
VARIETY: 6.5, the lead up to kills is virtually the same, same sort of missions/investigations, same sort of sidequests in every city. Its a bit surprising in retrospect they've gone this route, whereas similar games in worlds this size had a lot of variety in missions for the most part. I don't see how/why it would've been hard to add more variety in investigations. There is variety in how you can approach your assasinations though, which does help this. You can go brute, or you can use stealth and theres many approach options.
CONTROLS: 10, different but very intuitive and actually add to the game alot. Combat is a lot of fun, and I find myself getting into fights just for the sake of it at times.

So is this game better as a rental??
It all depends on what your own personal criteria for rental vs buy is.
The only reason I can think of that this game would be a rental is that it probably has very low replayability. However, it is a fantastic game that needs to be played. And it's got at least 10-15 hours of game play in there.
If you think you can rent it and finish it without having to rent it twice, then rent it.

I wonder if this game will drop like their others. It sold a lot better than I thought it would. We got 96 copies for the 360 (I forget how many for PS3, a little less) at work, we sold out for both consoles within a couple hours.

Still, awesome game. Crowds are cool since they comment when you do stupid things...or anything really. Everytime a beggar comes up and harasses me I feel the need to kill them. :-P

I really don't mind that part of the game at all. I'm finding the storylines very interesting. The main game is repetitive enough that I actually found myself looking forward to the next "break" last night after killing Talal. I wanted to get more of the scoop of what was going on. Which was a rather long discussion with Lucy that was long but interesting.

Not reading any of the posts from yesterday just yet since I don't want to see any accidental spoilers, but my god is this game amazing. No idea what Hil at IGN was smoking to determine this was one of the biggest disappointments ever, or what some of these other sites are playing to give it low scores. SOOO glad I'm not a blind sheep to gaming reviews, as I'd have never played this if that was the case.

Yea, its totally awesome I am on my 6th(?) I believe target and it's so friggen awesome.
Around the 3rd I sort of lost a little interest but then I gained all back after the 4th and 5th. I can't believe this game got 7's... ha...

And I realised that there is actual variety down the line to figuring out what your target is about.

Gabe from Penny Arcade put it best when he said it's a game you really want to play at your own pace and not rush it. Granted, it may not be your playstyle (I rarely play slow, stealthier games and such), but if you don't mind trying something new, it'll be good. I personally wouldn't want to play it while chomping at the bit for another game, but I tend to take games more slowly and play parts I screwed up/want to do better again.

Yeah, I read the Penny Arcade article. I figure I can play it for 4-5 hours over the next 4 days, so I'll put in 16-20 hours before Mass Effect comes out. Personally, I do like to take my time with games, but in the case of Assassin's Creed the primary complain people have with the game is repitition, so I don't think I'll be dying to complete every eavesdropping quest and such. I would wait to rent the game except I'm worried if I don't rent it tonight (Hollywood Video already has it on hold for me), it may be hard to track down later as it will near constantly be checked out for awhile.
Oh, and can anyone tell me if you can go back and play the sub-quests after you beat the main game? Because I'll probably rush through the main quest, but then go back later (if I have time) to check out what I missed. Is AC a game you can do that with?

I'd say if you're at all on fence in regards to buy vs rent, unless you can get a steal of a deal, rent it first. I'm not regretting the purchase, but as its been said, for a lot of people (me included) replay value is low. I will probably shelve it or trade it and then re-buy it cheap or rent it if a sequel comes.
Im on the 7th kill now. It's still A LOT of repetition investigation wise (I don't see how someone else in this thread says it gets varied after a while, it doesnt, its still the same things do in an investigation) and now Im having fun plowing guards and punching beggars in the face. The actual kills though are crazy fun, and I usually end up just having to brute guys. My favorite investigation bit are Informers :D I am enjoying putting the time in, but the street dialogue gets really old. Altairs voice hasnt grown on me, but Im used to it now so its an afterthought.
This game definitely does not have high replay value for me. I'm not an achievement whore really so collecting the damn flags won't bring me back in, although I am picking one up and going out of my way to get them when I see them. I think 7-8 is a fair score, considering what could've been, and in terms of what it is I'd say its a solid 8, but not a 9 or 10. COD4 is still my GOY, and I'd put Assassins 3rd right now after Mass Effect, but ahead of Halo. I've had Mass Effect since Kmart put it onsale, and one positive to Assassins that Ive noticed is I havent played anythign else since getting Assassins.
They up the difficulty a tad by taking away automatic markers for investigations in the later kills, they dont automatically show even after a high spot so sometimes it takes some wandering to find the places the bureau tells you to go, but if you head in the direction they say, you'll find something eventually. You also have to do more investigations per kill as you get further along. It's a bit helpful, but Im at the point where I want to be done with the investigations and get to the kills as thats the best part.

I just mentioned this in my spoiler just above yours.
You need to listen to the bureau guy, he tells you which direction to go and then when you get to that area, look for a high spot. Sometimes you'll get lucky and literally run into a investigation piece (I ran into two pickpocketing missions). You get only about one marker per high point now and sometimes you'll get none.

If anything, I am more excited for a sequel than I was to play this first one. While I do think the negative reviews have merit and made some legit points about the definite negative aspects of the game (even if entirely hard handed in a lot of cases) a sequel will only give Ubisoft the chance to make this series shine even brighter, hell the first Splinter Cell isnt a patch on the sequels. Games are the only medium where most times the sequels outshine the first one.
I would love to see them expand on this and bring the franchise to other times and places, the futuristic aspect was genius in this regard. While a lot of people (myself included) were a bit disappointed by this aspect it opens the door for them to take the franchise anywhere, even with the Templar undertones.

Usually they glow if they are people you can lock onto. If you press Y you can see everyone glow different colors, to show their "intentions". Red means enemies, yellow means they are your target. Blue means passive - I forget others off the top of my head.

Wait, so critics should only review things they like? By that standard everything would always recieve a positive review. I don't think this Crispin character went into Assassin's Creed wanting to hate it. It seemed rather the opposite where he had high expectations and they fell short of it. A fair point, nonetheless.
I'm actually kind of glad this game has been getting dissapointing reviews. See, this was one of my most anticipated games of the year, so if I were a critic and got to play the game before any reviews started coming out, I too would have been dissapointed and probably scored it even lower due to how far it fell short of my expectations. But after reading all these reviews my expectations dropped signifacantly and now I'm actually pleasantly surprised how much I'm liking the game. Granted I am only about 3 hours in (I've just cokpleted my first assassination and all sub-quests, save rescuing the citizens). I can see why critics railed against it; the game design is rather tired with bland missions filling up most of the game, but running around the city is so fun that I don't really mind. I mean a lot of critics complained about how lame the eavesdropping missions are; you just sit on a bench and press the "listen" button. But I'd prefer that to long, drawn out missions with poor checkpointing. I mean these so-called "missions" are more or less just an excuse to make you run around town, which thankfully, happens to be a lot of fun. So yeah, there's a ton of wasted potential in this game, but what is there is really good and deffinitely worth a rental if nothing else.

I too just finished the first assassination. The quests are a bit repetitive, especially in a long play session, but it's kinda like Spider-Man 2. There aren't too many of them, and there's not a lot to do in each one (they're quick), plus half the fun is getting there.
That being said, both the "storyline" and the Free Running are among some of the funnest stuff in the game.
My girlfriend, a Middle Eastern studies major, really enjoys watching me play (in fact, she's playing right now, and she hardly ever plays games other than like Puzzle Quest), she says a lot of the architecture as well as the Arabic writing (she can read Arabic) is pretty accurate on everything, a lot of attention to detail.

The game is awesome. It has been the only game in a while to grasp me in to their world and have me play for hours straight I haven't been up this late playing a game in a while and I am happy about it. One of my top picks this year is Assassins Creed and I don't understand how any reviewers gave it in the 7's or even low 8's it just doesn't deserve it. I did notice the frame rate issues, but they didn't really destroy me in anyway. I am defiantly suggesting this game to anyone who wants an original non fps game since it has been a while. Also I have Cod4 I know you can't compare, but it really isn't good at all to me and if your thinking about what you should get if your stuck between the two Cod4 doesn't even deserve a chance.

Not all gamers like the repetition. IMO a 8 is completely deserved and the rating Im giving it as I head to the end (at the 8th kill). That's not a bad rating. I agree with a lot of the negative reviewers' points but I also agree with some of the praise.
I like it a lot, but to say COD4 doesnt even compare is folly, but to each their own. I have felt nothing like I did in this game like I did playing All Ghillied Up/One Shot One Kill, and the fact that COD4 is probably the best MP game on Live EVER, that's a pretty bold statement. If I was going to suggest, rent Creed, buy COD4 its not even an argument, especially if you enjoy multi. You sound biased against FPS to begin with. Not flaming btw. I feel the same way at times, but COD4 is fantastic. Creed is just good.
I like Creed, and am enjoying it, but the repetition in investigations and chatter in the streets brings it down a notch or two. They really dropped the ball on the investigations end. It would not have taken much to add more variety on that angle.

Just finished the game...
While I'm still left feeling that it lacked variety in certain areas, the story MORE than made up for it. I don't think replay value is that high, but the ending was perfect all considering. My only other gripe is that I wish they included skill settings, because I found it a bit easy.
I knew that Mualim was bad, first time I saw him I thought "Saruman"
The ending was cryptic as hell and until Lucy was revealed as a spy, I thought that Kristen Bell was rather useless otherwise.
The fact that there can be and most likely will be sequels is great, the depth of the story and the fact it WAS "futuristic" in aspects opens the door to so many things and places they can go with the game and improve on the mistakes they made with this one.
Great Franchise in the making.
All in all I'm happy with the game. It has its shortcomings, but the depth of the story made up for it.

I could tell how HORRIBLE the game is if you rush it, I was trying to rush at the end and it was so unfun and frusturating... So just relax and play it, and if you get anxious just take a break.

Although I hated the last 3 kills of the "REAL" 9 investigation parts. I WAS SO FUCKING PISSED. So I just plowed through it and only did the minimal stuff. Im gonna go back for the achievements.

None of the 9 people on your list to assassinate are 'bosses.' That's what I liked about the game. They were just high ranking, regular people. Towards the end some of the 'bosses' wouldn't let you hit them with your sword, they'd always counter it. You're supposed to counter their move and assassinate them when they're on the ground. It wasn't too easy.

Without spoilers, is there much to the game after you finish the 9 assassinations(I'm on the 4th)? I just wanna see if I'm gauging my progress correctly.
For anyone wanting to maximize their achievements, you have to get on these two from the very beginning or you'll have to start a new game...
(Spoilers take place within 5 minutes of you starting the game)
You need to talk with Lucy after/before memory blocks. Basically, walk up to her when the doctor's not in the room(usually you're prompted to get some rest) and you can initiate a conversation. Eventually she'll tell you "Can't talk, gotta work" or "Get some rest" and that tells you that you're finished with that.
Also, complete all side-missions before killing your assassination targets. That means getting all view points, saving all citizens and completing all the investigations beyond the 2 minimum.
If you mess the second achievement up I think you can revisit your memory and do that part over on your current save but no such luck on the Lucy achievement.

Do the kill count achievements track between sessions? So if I turn off my game will I still have X counter kills racked up?
Also, I seem to be a getting a lot of disc read errors going into/out of Acre - anyone have this issue? I'm completely fine IN the city, it's just the zoning issue.

Can someone help me with the Blade in The Crowd achievement?
I've tried everything, stealth assassinations, overt, ect. Cannot get this for the life of me. Also, does the achievement pop up as soon as you do it, or later after you fast forward your memory?

Nah, Cliffy seems to be a douche, Jade at least seems to be likeable.
Thats just the point. I feel they used her as eye candy to get people to pay attention to this game.

Not really. That's pretty much all of it unless you're going for the templars/flags.

They track, yes.

Are you stealth assassinating [don't hold RT] the target from behind while being completely anonymous?
If so, that's weird, you should have got it.

Yes, but the indicator might have been yellow/red. (like, not flashing red) so I assume that's still anonymous?
I'm on the seventh one, you think I'll have another chance to do it? They seem to be getting harder to remain so quiet.
Also, another question if you can... The combo one, kill 50 or whatever using combos... is that just where you keep pressing X? Hoping it doesn't slay him in a single hit?

As long as the indicator is not flashing/beeping you should be alright. That's how I got it.
You probably won't have such a good chance on the later targets, but you can go back and replay the other missions. I did it on the doctor.
Combos are when you keep pressing X and it goes into the animation, yes. I think it might be glitched though, because it had felt like I had way more than 50 when it finally unlocked for me.

Yeah, just replay it and do it on the doctor. That's where I got it. Just make sure those crazy guys don't push you.
Those damn crazy guys have caused me into so much trouble...

Am I missing something or can you not manually save your game, or revert to a previous saved game in this game? I wanted to retry a few assassinations but can't figure out how.

Anybody else felt it was impossible to assassinate that Templar captain (forgot his name) the way it was demonstrated in that video walkthrough months back?
As for going back to other assassinations, you can replay the different memory blocks you've completed, through the Animus. But that's about it.

Just beat it, got 815/1000 points. Not to shabby.
The game was great. Very refreshing change of pace. I'd personally rate it a 9.0, like gamespot did.
The repetition with side quests is my biggest, and basically only complaint. It was just stupid, same kinds of investigations.

I'm just about at assassination #3, and I'm going through and completing everything except for the flags and templars (unless I run into them), and I don't really get bored with this unless I play like 3+ hours at a time. As long as I limit play session to an hour or two, I find it a lot of fun. I'd say I'd put it around a 9.0 as well, probably below for the moment, but depending on how good the ending/rest of game is it may move around.

Having only putzed around for the first 2 hours or so, my initial impressions are mostly positive. Graphics are solid, gameplay isn't too bad (although I'm not that fond of the control setup so far), and most importantly, I like this Animus concept!
I'll just take my time over the next week or so, gradually working through the game, and see what I actually think.

A few more observations:
-Why do you hear so many people speaking french, german, and arabic if the animus is suppose to translate it for you?
-Why do they let you turn off all the useful hud stuff but you can't turn off the damn giant helper graphics that pop on randomly all the time?
-I hate the save system. I can't load a previous save to try another way to assassinate. I can't save when I want. I have to wait for a certain even to autosave for me, which usually means I have to watch a bunch of dialog again after reloading a session.
Beat the game earlier this evening, enjoyed every minute of it. I love how deep it's gotten, can't wait for the sequel.

I screwed up on a mission ... not going to mention which one for spoiler reasons. Anyways I went to assasinate the main target in one mission and it wouldn't let me jump down on him like I could have :( All in all I took a hit and before I realized it I lunged at him and killed my target.
What I'm trying to get at is I'm going for the full DNA bar achievement. Can I go back and kill the target and still get this achievenment?

It might be bugged.. I was not at full DNA a few times, and I still got the achievement.
This games achievements are a bit whack, 2 of them didn't work until I tried a shitload of times (Blade in the Crowd and Eagle Dive).
Then the DNA one works when I totally didn't plan it. YMMV.

You have to go find lookout spots on your own now. Just look for tall buildings with eagles on top, go up, synchronize and icons will begin to pop up again. There will only be 1 or 2 icons popping up per synch now though.
