View Full Version : Monster House GBA = Next GBA Zelda???
This is an interesting review...Monster House for the Gameboy Advance is being pegged as a Zelda like clone. It got an 8.2 at Gamespot. Intrestingly enough the GC version is completely different and got a horrible score and the DS version is a completely different game but is compared to Smash TV and got a 7.3. The GBA game though looks pretty good...you can see Zelda like-ness in the screenshots. This might be worth a pickup when it hits the bargain bin.

How bizarre in so many ways. First, that they would make an RPG game out of a kid's movie license. Second, that the game is different depending on platform.

Interestingly enough, Nintendo Power hated the game. I saw the same comparison earlier and checked it out; they gave it a 5:
Imagine one terrifically long, drawn-out dungeon from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, then yank out enemy variety, cool weapons, and a constant sense of accomplishment. That's kinda how Monster House for GBA is.

Nintendo Power is the worst gaming magazine in history. Unless you're six years old.

I can't believe that people still read it, and actually trust its reviews.

I still get it because I started at issue 1.
Plus you get a free guide for every year, and you get a cool thing here or there as a subscriber.
I don't even read it though. I just sort of skim through it.

I'm so confused by Gamespot's score on this. It is getting killed everywhere and has a gamerankings average of 64 GBA and 61 DS.:-k

forget about not trusting Nintendo Power. You shouldn't trust any one individual review. Do some research, watch some videos, make love down by the fire.

In fairness, I don't think many reviewers even play GBA licensed games anymore. I think they simply play for about 15 minutes and write a review. Or, at least, that's how some read.

Someone hasn't read Gamepro in a while.

I just watched some gamplay footage of this at Gamespot... it looks pretty much exactly like what Nintendo Power described it to be. A very boring Zelda clone.

Sometimes Gamespot is just wayyyy off. How many poor saps bought Marc Ecko's Getting Up because of that review?

What-ever. I've had "Karl Lagerfeld's Empire: Tatics" pre-ordered for months!

The point is, when Nintendo Power gives a game a bad review, you should pay a little attention.
I don't know why it gets all the hate (moreso than any others), other than its first-party bias. Sure, some of the reviewers are dipshits, but that's the case with all the mags. Some reviews are certainly well-written.

Honestly, I wonder why you bother to defend it (if I'm not mistaken, this has come up in the past). No offense, but you seem to be the only person who sticks up for it. I was a subscriber for several years, from the early SNES days through the start of the N64, and the only reason I hung on that long was for all the free guides I was getting. I even got another year when the Zelda compilation was being offered as a bonus. Nothing had changed.
To me, the only understandable use for Nintendo Power would be a "training wheels" magazine for a six-year old. Or a way to rope free gear, I suppose.
And no, I haven't read GamePro in quite a few years, but last I recall I would have rather had flaming dog shit sent to my house on a monthly basis. But at least the writing was more mature than Highlights.

I get it for free now so it's not as if I have some stake in it. But I also get EGM and Game Informer for free, and they're no better than Nintendo Power. But at least NP covers more than one or two Nintendo games a month. As I asked, I'm just curious why it gets more hate than any other. But I apologize for saying not-bad things about them twice on CAG.

I'd like to see some more opinions of Monster House if everyone is done talking about Nintendo Power . From what I've seen in screens and videos it is a pretty blatant rip-off of Zelda, but it doesn't look terrible. Afterall, Star Fox Adventures and Beyond Good and Evil borrowed a lot from Zelda and those games were pretty damn sweet. I doubt Monster House is that good but the Gamespot reviewer must have liked it for a reason, and I seriously doubt he/she was paid off, that's a pretty ridiculous accusation.
