I'm currentliy looking at a Samsung http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151118
or an NEC 3550A. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058
I already have an NEC and I know it's fast, but this Samsung is a few dollars cheaper. Has anyone used the Samsung? I don't even know lightscribe is so I probably won't be using it anytime soon. I'll probably never use a DVD Ram disk either. On my current NEC I use 8X or 16X - and + R disks only. The problem is I don't have a reader and I've been told I shouldn't use my writer as both. With these being as cheap as they are, I figured I'd just get another RW drive and use one as the reader and the other as the writer.

I'd say go with the NEC. I had nothing but troubles with a Samsung CDRW/DVDROM drive a few years ago. While I haven't personally used an NEC (I primarily use Plextor or Lite-On), I have friends who use it and haven't had a problem.

I'd say the opposite, well not really. I mean NEC is fine, but I have the same samsung drive as the one listed it works like a charm. Plus it's cheaper, has more features, adn comes with the OEM disc that includes several nero programs (if you like nero). I'd say go with the samsung.

I dont think you'll be disappointed with either. I have a Samsung drive for over 6 years and it is still working even to this day. Since it's a few dollar cheaper, I'd go with Samsung in this case as well.

Thanks for the replies. I believe I'll get the Samsung as soon as I have the money.
As for buying cheap, I know better than to go there. I have an I/O Magic 16X +-R/RW DL drive that refuses to work in DMA. The fastest it'll read is 2.9X and it writes even slower than that. It takes about 3 hours to burn a DVD to the PC and back to another disk.
