This is obviously a mistake but

www.samgoody.com/Games/Game.aspx?h_id=H++++42111

Don't know if it will be honored but check it out.

EDIT: I guess those thousand orders in an hour clued them in. Odds are they won't honor any orders but oh well.

That's the reserve price. It says reserve instead of buy. They will probably charge you the other $35 when it ships. But you never know.

Hmm.. i wonder if that 14.99 reserves a copy for you, and they make you pay the rest when shipped? Cant hurt to try.

danh920

they can't charge you additionally unless you authorize it

ninja gaiden say it's a $49.99 reserve

I figured it was worth a shot:

---------------------------------------------
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles / Game
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles / Game
NINT96127CUBE 1 Game $14.99 $14.99

Subtotal 1 US$14.99

US Domestic Mail (may include handling) $2.27

Backorder - Total Price US $17.26

---------------------------------------------

this says the game was charged at $14.99. I'll send it back (or reverse the charges) if they try to charge more when they ship it.

Every other pre-order game has the full price listed.

They messed up on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance to so it wouldn't be the first time they did this.

Plus if you had to pay more later they would be obligated to tell you.

This is a screw up plain and simple

Put in the order, I hope they honor this price whin it comes the time...

I'll have to return it if they don't ...

coffman
02-09-2004, 03:12 PM
I tried it. I thought at first that the $14.99 price was to reserve a copy, but when you complete the checkout it tells you that the amount listed is what will be charged to your credit card. Like you said, we'll see if it is honored.

Well my order has a column for format and it says Game in that column so if they ship a guide rather than a game they are going to get an earful.

I think it goes overboard when people take what they see here and post it some place else. Now THAT IS FOUL. Keep it home people. remember how crazy you were when you first got here and saw all the stuff you missed out on? Let those people find this stuff on their own. at least on the price mistakes. 1000 orders within 3 hours is a red flag for pricing errors folks. they will find out. lets keep it real. I'm going to grab my one copy and be happy as hell if they send it. I'll be real mad if they cancel the day before it comes out because this has been posted all over the place.

I don't think anyone would want to order a crap load out of the possibility that they end up trying to charge the full $50 per copy on your credit card. I think most "wise" people are only going to experiment with purchasing one copy.

They never honored the FFTA mistake. Everyone got a letter pointing out that in their legal disclaimer it says they don't have to honor pricing mistakes. And the order was canceled. So at least you're not stuck paying full price. Sorry everyone, don't get your hopes up.

You never know. They can try to charge you, claiming that $15 was the reserve price, and you can take time to dispute it, but if the charges show up at the end of your billing cycle before it gets resolved, then you're faced with an even bigger headache. Good luck to those that do order multiple copies.

Note that the website lists "2/15/2004" as the release date. The *10th* is the release date. Sounds likes there's bunches of numbers crossed here. At any rate, they've got almost a freakin' week to figure something out, if the 15th is their date for it.

yeahman is right. if you look, youll notice the columns arent lined up correctly. if you shift it it reads:

0.00 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 14.99 - FINAL FANTASY: CRYSTAL / GAME
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0.00 Subtotal
0.00 Shipping & Handling
$0.00 Total

i dont know if the amount totals to zero because theyve cancelled it or because its still a preorder. i guess we'll find out sooner or later.

E-Z-B,

you know what's funny (and a bit sad at the same time, due to what I missed out on)? I only found out about CAG b/c of fatwallet, that was back near the end of Dec/beginning of Jan. I only used fatwallet to find cheap games, after I realized slickdeals would never get the stuff that ended up on fatwallet. someone mentioned this site in a post, and I've been here ever since. evolution of a CAGer, at least this one ;)

a big thanks to CheapyD and the CAG collective for my now-incredibly-large game collection!

What I find most amusing about this is the fact that the deal died as soon as it was posted on FatWallet. Much like the Circuit City deals that we had here for a month or so - they died about a day or two after being posted on FatWallet.

E-Z-B,

you know what's funny (and a bit sad at the same time, due to what I missed out on)? I only found out about CAG b/c of fatwallet, that was back near the end of Dec/beginning of Jan. I only used fatwallet to find cheap games, after I realized slickdeals would never get the stuff that ended up on fatwallet. someone mentioned this site in a post, and I've been here ever since. evolution of a CAGer, at least this one ;)

a big thanks to CheapyD and the CAG collective for my now-incredibly-large game collection!

Check your order status online guys. My order said it was shipped.

It seems that Sam Goody's email notification is a tad on the slow side.

Either that or they're screwing with me since my card was charged. :D

I talked to a Customer Service rep. He basically said that the item was just out of stock. I didn't push it any farther than that, but it looks like they haven't cancelled orders en masse or anything yet.

Call customer service, give them the order number, shmooze a little, get account info ("which cc did I use?", "what do you have down for my address?"), possibly cancel the order (which most likely won't make much difference in this instance), or, at the very least, check order status hundreds of times, each one generating an annoying email to him.

As they say, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you."

I doubt they would honor it since they must have got 1000s of orders so someone is going to see that they are selling a game for $15 that they have to buy for around $42 and they will cancel the order.

If everyone bought one and didn't post on fat wallet they might have shipped before anyone found out.

I was the first one to see this deal (at least the first to post) and I didn't even bother trying to buy it 'cause I knew what would happen.

How can a game jump straight from preorder to backorder? I think Sam Goody is intentionally putting the game on hold until a reasonable amount of time passes so that they can lawfully cancel our orders. They'd rather not sell a single copy at regular price than selling all the copies at $15. BTW, the price has just jumped again from $45 to $50.

When you place an order they preauthorize your credit card. The credit card company then holds that authorization for 10 days. If after 10 days the charging company (ex. Sam Goody) does not claim the funds, the preauthorization drops and you lose out on the advertised price.

First of all, fwacce, excellent post, I could not agree more. I get very annoyed when people get upset when companies do not honor price mistakes. If they honor them (GameStop with the Going Commando deal, EB with Wario World, for examples), great. If they don't, how can one really hold it against them? Why do these people think the world owes them everything? Don't go crying to the BBB, they have enough to do dealing with legitimate complaints against business that really are ripping people off.

Max: Sam Goody can inform us that it was a price mistake, and therefore cancel the order. They do not have to assume we knew in advance. Legally, they need to be able to prove that it was a mistake (so that it does not appear that it was a bait and switch operation or that they are discriminating against certain people), but I really don't think anyone is going to press the issue, nor do I think anyone ought to.

Max Spider X
02-19-2004, 04:57 PM
But did they inform us? No they didn't. Instead they are probably pulling this "backorder" trick on us. What do we have to hold against them? we have no idea if they will or will not honor all the orders. its very possible there's a valid reason they haven't sent the games out, such as delayed shipments to their warehouses, etc. maybe they just haven't received them yet. no one seems to know for sure, so don't assume one way or another until the orders are either cancelled or filled.

I will agree with you that if all they are going to do is cancel the orders (which they most likely will), then they could have handled the situation better. If they'd go ahead and cancel, they could start selling them at the real price, but the way things stand, they are hurting themselves more than they are hurting any of us.

If the situation were slightly different, say it was a $10 savings rather than a $35 savings, something that one could reasonably assume was their actual price, and then they put them all on backorder, and then they cancelled, one would have a reason to complain, as there could be an opportunity cost involved (i.e. "I didn't get it from BB for their sale price because I was getting it from SG, but SG cancelled, and now BB is up to full MSRP"), but it still would not be a matter for the BBB.

Max Spider X

since the deal has died, i decided to buy the game used so i can return in a week to gamestop. wow this game is awful to me....slow paced, no story, no explanation of why that miasima fog even exists.

its so watered down, its not really for expierenced players at all.

Maybe they can't keep the money this long without delivering a product, so they had to credit your money back onto your credit card. If they do intend to ship the game when it arrives, you might see a new charge then on your statement.

Those emails are automatically generated by their inventory software. If there are orders on file that are backordered it will send out an email after a certain amount of time. At some point the orders will be canceled.

This sounds right, even the e-mails show $0.00 charged and they state your card will not be charged until it ships the item. My statement shows nothing from Sam Goody yet and probably never will(still hoping). I hate bumping this topic until something is actually canceled or shipped, but it's already on top so screw it.

Only two hopes at this point. 1) They really do not have any in the warehouse because they did not get any shipments. (highly unlikely).
2) They are intentionally holding all orders so that they cancel the cheaper ones. Then they will ship the people who paid $50 their games. (My only hope with this is that they currently have 10,000 copies in their warehouse because their computer already placed the orders due to the backorders. Maybe then they will clearance them at $29.99? Most people who really wanted this game already got it and are not going to order it from Sam Goody.

I got the same standard message.

You know when I ordered this I knew it was 99.9% likely it was a mistake, and if they had sent me an email the next day saying they would not fill the order I would have been understanding.

It's been three weeks since I ordered it now. I've had a couple of oppurtunities to get it less than $40, but of course not nearly as cheap as $15 so I waited to see Sam Goody's response.

To cancel the orders now would be poor business practice. Man up and take the hit, since the mistake wasn't immediately acknowledeged.
Considering how quickly they changed the price after word hit, they obviously knew about it.

Alright everyone. I have some new info. After dealing with several sam goody (musicland) reps on the phone, I've learned that all of our orders are set to expire on March 9th. I was told, however, that I (we) would be allowed to renew our orders, again at $14.99.

My concern is that SamGoody knows that the price was wrong. They should've acted like men, and sent our cancellation orders from the beginning. Instead, they're taking the wussy way out and waiting 3-4 weeks for our orders to expire. Shame on them. I haven't called yet, but will this afternoon.

So, they should not be able to cancel my order unless they are not going to get any copies of this game in!

BustaUppa

My suggestion would be to just go and buy the game so that you don't miss out on all the fun. Then, worst comes to worst, let's say the Sam Goody order finally DOES go through and you end up with an extra copy of the game. Then all you do is take the receipt from the one you bought at the normal price, take the NEW FF:CC from Sam Goody and just get your money back. This way you still would have only payed $15 for the game. This is all very theoretical, of course, and it hinges on the idea that the Sam Goody order would finally be filled within 30 days (or whatever the retail store's return policy states).

I just called the Sam Goody customer service number and specifically asked the cust serv rep to keep my order open. I'm now rather skeptical of the way Sam Goody is handling this, as I was told "the orders will stay active until the game ships out, as there are a large number of people who ordered it." I don't necessarily believe that (the guy wasn't very convincing when he said it), so I'd like to hear what others here have been told.

I was also told the computer would AUTOMATICALLY cancel orders after 30-60 days (he didn't seem to know what it would be for this particular order), but that I would receive an email if that was the case

ofcourse they don't wish to cancell your order. even if its a mistake, they want to sponge off as much interest as they can. i still think they should ship it anyways even if its a mistake cause, 1. its border line to false advertising. 2. they still make money since FF:CC is $44 if bought wholesale.

Indiana

They are not making any money. There is no interest; they do not charge your card until it ships. I'm starting to think there is more than 1 pile. The more you paid the sooner it will ship to you. Those who paid $49.99 got their copy those who paid $44.99 have no received their copy. The question is are people still buying the game at $49.99 from the website? I'm guessing that the cheapest orders are going to be filled last.

Dear Customer,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your order
recently placed with SamGoody.com.

Please be advised that backorders only stay on backorder for about
30-45
days. The expiration on this order is 3-16-04. unfortunatly there is no
way to extend backorders. If the order cancels you will have to

I'm trying to plan my letter to the Better Business Bureau now:

I purchased merchandise (Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the Nintendo Gamecube) for $15 through a sale from SamGoody's online store on Feb. 9, 2004. They immediately sent an email saying that my order was "backordered." I called their customer service a couple times asking where the merchandise was, and each response was "it should be coming soon." After waiting for them to deliver for over a month, they cancelled my order. The next day, the item on their website listed as "in stock", and they raised the price to $50. Having missed out on other deals for the same merchandise at their competitors, I feel that I was cheated.

Something to that affect. If we all get a story together to report the the BBB, maybe this will raise an eyebrow or two. I would NEVER had resorted to this if SamGoody hadn't dragged us along for this long of a time period.

The BBB is many times uneffective for cases like this. You may want to also issue a complaint with your state's attorney general's office. Even though the price was obviously a mistake, Sam Goody has had weeks to own up to that fact. Since they have not stated that it was a mistake, I am taking the approach that it was a special "introductory sale". Because one person has received a copy from Sam Goody at a higher price, the "introductory sale" must have been false advertising. When mistakes are made in printed flyers, the stores tell people immediately that the price was a mistake and therefore they are not obligated to sell the item for the mistaken price. Sam Goody has not admitted the mistake, so therefore there was no mistake. This is all rather tenuous and I'd be suprised if complaining works, but for just a few minutes of everyone's time we can create a huge headache for Sam Goody.

"The Musicland Group, Inc. (“TMG”), with its principal place of business at 10400 Yellow Circle Drive Minnetonka, MN 55343, owns and operates businesses under the names SamGoody.com and SamGoody.comsm."

But also know: "If you are dissatisfied with the Site, its content or Web Purchase Policy, you agree that your sole and exclusive remedy is to discontinue using the Site. "

While I am upset with how they are handling this, they never took money from me with the promise of sending the game.

I agree they did not commit fraud by keeping my money and not shipping the game. However they have committed that they will ship the game. I receive an automated email every week about them "working hard" to ship me the game. Also, I have contacted customer service and they did not cancel my order so this tells me that if they have the games they should either cancel the orders or ship the games. Not wait until the system automatically kicks us out!

Has anyone heard anything new about this? Some people on this thread said that customer service told them their orders would expire tomorrow and that you could extend it.

Nope I wrote them and they told me that it would cancel on the 16th and that I would have to reorder on the 16th. I would not be able to extend my order!
