both AFF25 and PPLAY15(did not check SAVER) work

45 bucks plus shipping on something that is still 85-100 in stores is a pretty good deal

FlipSide

AFF25 brings it down to $44.99 + $1.99 shipping

PPLAY15 and SAVER brings it down to $50.99 shipped

Does anyone know if you can still play FFXI if you buy a pre-owned HD? I want to play it, but don't want to shell out for $100, and I know a lot of other MMORPGs don't work if you buy them pre-owned because the code they come with expires.

box and instructions are a joke(there is a manual, a disc and a couple instruction manuals).

All you need is the disc and a screw driver.

and since SONY sticks manuals for games on their website, I am sure you could find one for the HDD

I think someone said you just have to reformat your hard drive to play the game.

I would ask EB if FFXI is included as a precaution, although I highly doubt it would not be included

You may have a problem though cause you need the codes printed inside the manual. You'd be screwed if you needed to reinstall the game for any reason and didn't have the manual.

Chances are in its used someone used the registartion numbers, meaning you couldn't play FF anyways.

Also there's a bug in most HDDs were you have to reinstall Playonline, so you'll be needing the CDS.

Well, if you really want to save the money I would email EB and ask them what you're entitled to with the purchase of the preowned one. If you get it in writing that you're entitled to play the game they will have to make sure that you can....

Decent deal, I just bought a loose HDD for 39.99 at my indie shop this weekend. I deleted all the PlayOnline stuff and freed up a gig of space.

Also there's a bug in most HDDs were you have to reinstall Playonline, so you'll be needing the CDS.

There was no bug to speak of. People just didn't read page 4 of the quick start manual in the FFXI game case. Although PlayOnline and FFXI were preinstalled, you still had to put in the PlayOnline disc to "finalize" it's setup. Best guess that anyone ever had was that it was locking down the HDD to your specific PS2 / Network Adapter as afterwards you can't use the HDD in another PS2 without reformatting it. Probably something to do with their proprietary DNAS authorization system to prevent cheating on their online games.

So no, there never was a "bug" at all. It was set up like that by design.

I traded for mine and the playonline stuff has never been touched. The only thing I lack is the free month(he used it for his PC account)

So do these come preloaded with XI on it?

Brand new: yes. Pre-owned: who knows. The previous owner could have deleted it. Which is preciesly why they give you the FFXI install disc should you ever need to reinstall it. But seriously, if you are planning on playing FFXI, getting a pre-owned HDD is a bad idea. You can pretty much guarantee that the prior owner already used the Content ID codes that come with FFXI for the free month and then cancelled it. I don't think you can get new Content IDs from Square-Enix without buying the software all over again.

06-16-2004, 04:46 PM
ehh XI isnt that important to me...I dont think it is worth the extra 50 bucks plus 12 a month....this HDD is just what I am looking for...

So I called eb customer service and asked them about the hard drive. The guy was like, it comes with just the hard drive in a container. When I asked if it came with the setup disks(i didnt ask about ffxi) he said, it should, but he didnt sound to sure about that. He said, just any manuals that came with it wouldnt be there.

I also asked him about the return policy, and he said that I could return it to a B&M store, but if I open it, they can only do an exchange. Thats kind of crap though, cuz Id like to know if the setup discs come with it or not.

A little off topic now, I was planning on buying a 3rd party hd and the hd loader, but I emailed a website that already has it and they said that even if Im playing a game online from the disc Id need to remove the 3rd party hd first because they do an hd check. So if you were planning to play online at all, youd need the sony hdd, or i guess you could just remove the 3rd party hd every time.

hmm...but how would a B+M store do an exchange..I have never seen a preowned hard drive...or a serperate one come to think of it

****thread merged***This was posted last week by not me. I emailed EB to ask about the functionality of the drive and they responded with:

<Hello,

Thank you for contacting EBgames.com.

We don't see any reason why the FFXI wouldn't work. If you have any
technical questions regarding the HDD we recommend contacting Sony
directly. You can reach them at (800)345-SONY.

If you require further assistance, we are available 7 days a week from

AM to Midnight EST.

Have a great day!

Doesn't seem very helpful to me. Still, it's a great price (especially after the coupons) so if CostCo doesn't have any in stock tomorrow I might order it.

Add an inflated quantity of it in your cart (like 200 or something), and when you hit "Update Quantities" the number will change to the amount left in stock. Very useful for deals that go fast (like that $9.99 Counter-Strike for Xbox).

Official word from ebgames.com, the PO HDD will come with the utility disk only. It will not include FF XI or Playonline, which I expected. The guy I talked to also told me that if I get a HDD that doesn’t include the utility disk I can return it as an incomplete item. He couldn’t tell me what was installed on the HDD so I guess I’ll find out when I get it. All the documentation for the HDD can be found on the Playstation website. I got one for $50 shipped. This is a good deal for people who want the HDD and don’t care about FF XI or Playonline. At the time of this post they had 6 left.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I got my used HDD and network adapter today.

The network adapter was by itself in a plastic bag, but the HDD came in a larger box with 2 manuals and a disk with various HDD function programs. The HDD and network adapter appear to work fine (I'm waiting for my HDLoader to come) as I can see/do things on the HDD through the PS2 "browser" menu.

The HDD has nothing on it.

This is a good deal, thanks for posting it.

Yep I got mine today too. Quer where did you order your HD Loader from? I am waiting on mine from consolesource. It shipped Friday so I am hoping Monday or Tuesday. Although I chose the cheap shipping, it is in ontario and I am in New York..not that far.

Only games that are programmed to "see" the HDD can save directly to it. In otherwords, nothing currently.

You can however copy your saves from a memory card to the HDD and vice versa to free up some space on your memory card and only have the saves you are currently using on it.
