View Full Version : [NEW DEAL] YMMV-Target-48% Off Rainchecks This Week
Ugamer_X
06-14-2004, 09:31 PM
Most of you know the deal...This week (6/20-6/26) it's for GTA: Vice City on the PS2.
For the uninformed, go to your local Target and see if they have GTA: Vice City for the PS2 in stock. If it's out of stock, ask an employee for a raincheck and he/she will hand you one for 48% off any item in the same product category, that being games. GTA: VC is regularly $30, it's on sale this week for $15.88, hence the 48% off.
As always, this deal is YMMV due to some Targets changing their raincheck policy from the Madden fiasco. Also some Target stores will only let you use the rainchecks on a $30 dollar game as opposed to a game that's more or less than $30 or you may only be able to use the raincheck on the same system the raichecked game was for.
Last but not least, DON'T ABUSE THIS DEAL, you'll only ruin it for the rest of the communtiy if you go out and get 20 rainchecks and then your store decides change it's policy. It's happened before, so just keep your raincheck hunting to a minimum.
Confirmed Game 48%*:
GTA: Vice City
*Raincheck may only work on $30 games.

Can anyone confirm the True Crime price drop, cause this is the only one that is out at my Target.........
Ugamer_X

The Target website still lists True Crime at $50 for both the PS2 and Xbox...However, the prices on the site and in-store don't always match up.
I couldn't see the regular price listed on the tag at the store today, that's why I can't confirm it.

I can't confirm this but I'd be surprised if TC is still $50 instore. It's $30 pretty much everywhere else. I bet it's probably like $39.99 or something.

Madden fiasco?
O.o
Target rainchecks were brought in because of a sale on a Madden game for PC, being something like 63% off or something. It's considered a fiasco because tons of people used these Madden rainchecks to get 63% off any game (which the raincheck allowed), including YMMV clearance titles...and some Target stores started to wise up and change their raincheck policies or just stop giving them out entirely.

You can ask for the same raincheck if they don't have Grand Theft Auto Double Pack in stock for Xbox. Hell I got two rainchecks yesturday before ever hearing of any abusing of the rainchecks. I asked for one, saw that I get could get 45% basicially any game, used common sense and got another. 8)

Most of you know the deal...This week it may apply to multiple games. The game I used to get the raincheck was Manhunt for Xbox.
For the uninformed, go to your local Target and see if they have Manhunt for the Xbox (possibly PS2) in stock. If it's out of stock, ask an employee for a raincheck and he/she will hand you one for 45% of any item in the same product category, that being games. Manhunt is regularly $50, it's on sale this week for $27.88, hence the 45% off. This should work for any other game that is on sale this week for $27.88 that is regularly $50. Possible titles besides Manhunt are Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm (PS2), Rainbow Six 3 (possibly PS2 only), and True Crime (Xbx, PS2). You'll have to check those titles for yourselves because I couldn't confirm it today, but Manhunt for the Xbox does apply.
As always, this deal is YMMV due to some Targets changing their raincheck policy from the Madden fiasco. Also some Target stores will only let you use the rainchecks on a $50 dollar game as opposed to a game of lesser value or you may only be able to use the raincheck on the same system the raichecked game was for.
Last but not least, DON'T ABUSE THIS DEAL, you'll only ruin it for the rest of the communtiy if you go out and get 20 rainchecks and then your store decides change it's policy. It's happened before, so just keep your raincheck hunting to a minimum.
Confirmed Games:
Manhunt-Xbox
Grand Theft Auto: DP-Xbox
Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm-PS2

My Target always seems to keep the titles in stock, but I would imagine as the week goes on the chances of the store being out of a game on sale increases.
True--maybe if I go into St. Cloud again I'll check it out. Any other games besides those 3?

When do the games usually go out of stock (on average)...all 3 titles were still in stock at my St. Cloud location
It's different everywhere...Some games won't go out of stock at all, some wil be out of stock the day the sale starts. Your best chances are at the end of week though, because that gives more people time to buy the games in question.
Now, I have heard of people going to customer service and asking for rainchecks because the employees there don't check to see if it's in stock, so you'll likely get a raincheck...However, some people may or may not agree with using that tactic, but hey if you are that desperate, you can give it a shot.

I've had people at the customer service desk give me rainchecks even if the game was still on the shelf back in the electronics department. But I NEVER got a clerk that would let me use the raincheck on something else, no matter if the game on the raincheck was in stock or not. So this deal is very YMMV at this point.

How could they not let you use it on something else? It says right on it that you can substitute. I've never used one before but after seeing one, I'd be pissed if someone turned me down on a substitute.

I always get the runaround when trying to use a raincheck. The problem mainly comes from the manager not bothering to read the raincheck unless I constantly pester her. It's the same woman every time too. If she is working Customer Service, she always tells me that they (Target) don't do rainchecks anymore and it's first come first serve yet she always caves in after I request the raincheck again only to give me grief whenever I try to use it.

I didn't understand it either. I even wrote to corporate but they were no help. I decided it wasn't worth my time and effort to keep going to Target and looking for someone to bitch to in order to save $12 (I was trying to get MVP Baseball for $28 but I ended up just waiting a couple days and buying it for $40 at that KB sale).

Thanks a bunch, Ugamer_x. I picked up La Pucelle Tactics for $27.88 in Bend, Oregon. For those of you in Central Oregon, the Bend, Oregon Target store is out of GTA:DP for Xbox and Ghost Recon: Shitty Game (aka Jungle Storm... 4.5 from most review places.. ugh).
For those of you who know about my little bet:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15586&highlight=bet+kitchen
you'll be pleased to know that my purchase of LPT doesn't conflict with the bet because I bought LPT with money I got from selling Animal Crossing and Metal Arms: Glitch in the System on half.com. Woo for me!
Thanks again for the post. I would have probably picked up Onimusha 3 but if I order it from capcom.com I'll get a DVD and t-shirt as well. Plus, according to Gabe from Penny Arcade, "La Pucelle Tactics is shit hot."
EDIT: Here's Gabe's post. Scroll down almost to the bottom:

If the game in question is in stock, YMMV on whether they'll let you use the raincheck or not. Seeing as Targets have different policies on this, your best bet is to use the raincheck and check-out at the front of your store, not the electronics dept.

If you can....most Targets only let you pay for games in the electronics department. Also, even if they allowed you to pay up front, the chances of a cashier knowing what to do with the raincheck without having to call for help are very slim. Then you may get a snooty supervisor that claims that raincheck for the Xbox game is only good on Xbox games (it's not, it's on any console game) only.
The cashier at my Target said that very thing to me, and I politely asked him to verify it with a manager and within a few minutes, he told me he was wrong, and I was right. Well in so many words, at least :P

Yeah, you can get two rain checks. When they ring it up, they will ask you how many you want. Just tell them however many you'll want. But you'll only get one actual piece of paper, but it does say two rainchecks on it. So far, I've gotten four Manhunt rain checks.

I too would be very interested in hearing everyone's experience with this. I got one for XBOX GTA:DP last night. However, there's really nothing I want until NCAA 2005 comes out in July. I want to save it until then but am not sure what will happen if GTA is in-stock when NCAA comes out.
Would it make sense to use it on some other $49.99 game, keep it sealed, and then try to do an exchange for NCAA in July or would Target frown upon that as well?

I don't suggest you use it now on another game and then return it. What I do suggest is when NCAA 2005 comes out, just get the game and go right up to one of the cashiers at the front of the store, don't go to the electronics dept. Just tell the cashier the game is sold out and hope you don't get an asshole who will send someone to check.

GTA double pack was 39.99 or 49.99? I thought I saw it at 39.99. You only get like 31 percent off and I don't know if you can use it on a 49.99 game. I am not sure thought.

Thanks for the advice. I think the problem might be that the cashiers in the electronics department have to get the games from behind the glass and will probably expect me to pay for it in the electronics section.

So is Vice City (PS2) the one to use this week for rainchecks?

Question about raincheck. Ok if I get a raincheck for a game that is 39.99 and on sale for 27.89(31% off). Could I buy a game that is 49.99 and get 31% percent off with the raincheck or do I have buy the game at 39.99.

It's all highly situational depending on the clerk you get. Most of the time, they'll just ring it up with a percentage off, but other times they may insist that you purchase a game with the same original price point.

My Target had it priced at $15.88, but it also had about 10 copies on the shelf. I don't know if they'll sell out quickly enough to get my raincheck, though.
Yesterday, I got a Vice City raincheck for 48% off. My Target only carries the DP and not VC seperately.

I picked up Chronicles of Riddick today with a Manhunt rain check.
System automatically dropped it down to $27.88.
The game is $39.88 this week so I thought the 45% off might bring it down to under $23 . . . I didn't push it with the clerk (I don't want to be an ass**** on top of being cheap).
Funny the reciept shows "XBOX SFT . . . 27.88 (with a down arrow) the line below says "Regular Price $39.88"
The $27.88 price is consistent with the raincheck policy of discount from a "regular" price . . . I just had hopes of saving the extra $5
Anybody else pick up Riddick?

My target had some "Instant Substitution" signs. They were out of stock for GTA:VC but had an instnat substitute of Tiger Woods 2004 PS2 for $27.88. I also saw one for one of the GBA titles (Finding Nemo??) last week. I didn't ask for a rain check (I already had one for another game) but wonder if many stores have started doing this in lieu of giving out the "universal" rain checks.

So I could get a rain check and take it back in three weeks and get NCAA 2005 for 48% off? I'm new to these things.

I don't understand why I can't continue to use the Manhunt rain checks. The clerk last week seemed to input the 48% off manually. Is there something on the receipt that says when it will be cancelled or something?

if you have a problem with the last few remaning copies of a game at your local target (lets say 3 manhunts), and you need that 45% raincheck, just buy the manhunts, return them at different targets or at seperate times, then ask for rainchecks. its a little work but at least you get the shot at the percentage off.

A little drastic. I hope you didn't go through this process. <shakes head in amazement>

no, i did it for two copies of a game once to get a 48% raincheck. Didnt bother me much because at the time (before my area basically stopped clearencing games) i would go to multiple targets in a week, since i was there returning virtually was a breeze.

You know, perhaps it is just me, but that just sounds slightly less than ethical.

I'd say that half of what I read on this site is "slightly less than ethical" I'd say this and about another third of what is on this site is flat out unethical . . . not illegal, but unethical.
Then again, I bought an Xbox at Target with a free MechAssault and returned the Xbox and kept the free game (the way they calculated it, the game and system were not linked). That was pretty bad

I just figure that they may tell me to pick a 29.99 game vs. the 49.99 that Ninja Gaiden is going for. But, I figure I can go with Crimson Skies which is 29.99. The games are behind a glass case and will they let you bring them up to the front register for check out instead of the electronics department, say you have more shopping to do?

Well if you have a PS2 or a GC you can always pick up Megaman Anniversary and use the raincheck. Thats what Im gonna do. Thats IF I can pick up a raincheck on GTA for PS2 this week.
I hope it's not just for PS2 at my since I don't even have that system.

it YMMV. Certain stores have different policies. The ones in Orlando won't yet the one in Tallahassee does. Just ask sometime when you are there.

How do you go about getting these rainchecks? If the game's out, just ask any employee for a raincheck and they hand you a coupon for 48% off any game?

Go late at night, usually the elctronics department cash register is shut down by 8:30 or 9:00 (at least at my local Target) and if I buy a game from the case at that time, they tell me to take the game to the regular checkout area.

Just pulled it off in Chicago, got PGR2 for $17. I just played dumb, and got the clerk to admit it would work on any game, although he wasn't happy about it.
Me: "So, in theory, I could come back with another one and get whatever I want half off..."
Him: "Well, if you have those intentions...."
Me: "Well, as long as you have the policy I can take advantage of it."
Him: "Not while I'm around."
Sounds like a challenge to me. :-)

Well, I managed to snag a rain-check (just one...didn't want to abuse the deal).
Now I gotta decide...do I want Full Spectrum Warrior for $25, Metal Slug 3 for $20, or Metroid: Zero Mission for $15...
