I wasn't sure where to post this, so I figured here rather than get flamed on the PSP board.

For reasons I don't even pretend to understand anymore, I purchased a PSP around Christmas last year. I picked up GTA and Tony Hawk. It sat on my shelf for about 3 months.

Feeling partially guilty for splurging and then not using, and partially motivated to get something out of it, I purchased MGS, Me & My Katamari, Daxter, Mega Man, and MLB '06.

It basically say on the shelf until last weekend, when my wife bought me a DS Lite.

The PSP is the last time I give a piece of technology I don't like 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances. I figure I wasted over $800 on that POS. I've played with my DS pretty much nonstop since the weekend. Metroid, Big Brain, Mario Kart, new Mario Bros have been burgling all my spare time.

It's getting more action than my Xbox and GC - I think the great games for the DS are the best console/handheld games for any system right now.

I don't know what Sony's plan for the PSP is but I hope it involves some decent new IP and a more sturdy redesign.

I feel stupid for waiting so long but I guess it worked out as I ended up with the DS Lite and not the uglier original DS hardware.

Thanks,

LT

I used to own a PSP so I know what you mean.

While I like the PSP as a piece of technology, it has some design flaws. The games are basically meant to be less pretty ports of most existing PS2 games or franchises. The problem with that is, you start to wonder, "Why don't I just play the better version on my TV?"

The design of the PSP itself isn't very rugged. For something that is so expensive, it has no built in way to protect its screen. The GBA Micro had face plates and the DS systems and GBA SP had the flip design. When you buy things, like the Playgear Pocket, to protect the PSP, it also adds to the bulk. Combined with the paltry battery life and loading times (which are detrimental to a portable gaming experience), it makes you just want to leave the system at home.

I still own a PSP and I think it has come along in the past few months to become a very good system. That being said, I own 11 PSP titles and one UMD and 57 DS titles, most of which are pretty excellent games. I also have purchased three DS systems since it launched in the US. For a few months between the two systems launches, the DS wins hands down for me.

I love my DS but was given a PSP this weekend along with Daxter and I love it. While it will never replace my DS as system of choice, I am having a hell of a time with Daxter. I have no idea what I will play once I beat it.

While I love my DS lite more than my PSP, the PSP still isn't bad. It has some notable games and is also pretty fun. I would type more...but I'm hungry.

I just got my ds lite, already have 15 games, and I play it non stop. I dont even touch my 360, xbox, cube, ps2 anymore. Its so much easier to just pick up the lite and start playing. I still like my psp though, with all its homebrew and movie playing, im definetly gotten my money's worth for my psp, but theres just something about being able to play a surgeon, a lawyer, playing with a dog, and doing absolutely nothing in animal crossing. I too have seen the lite.

I'm actually on my 2nd PSP (traded the first one in) and I like it more now. The thing is you really need to be very selective with what you buy for it. It's a shame you didn't give Syphon Filter Dark Mirror a try...that game pretty much saved me from dumping a 2nd PSP because I enjoyed it so much. I'm hoping Metal Gear Portable Ops holds up. I think my PSP library will always be smaller than my DS library but at least now I've come to peace with the system. I really do love the DS for its pick up and play aspect. No waiting just gaming.

PSP is great technology, but the games just aren't their.

I don't want to play PS2 ports and spinoffs on my portable, as I pretty much only play my portable at home. If I'm at home, I'd much rather play those games on the PS2 on my home theater.

And given the development costs for PSP games are about the same as PS2 games, we're not going to get much in the way of original games, as it makes more financial sense for developers to put games on the PS2 with its 100 million plus worldwide base, and port them to the PSP as an afterthought.

Factor in the load times, the analog nub being hard to get used to, and the diagnols not working on the d-pad, and the system is just a mess for me.

I only have 3 fun games for my PSP (possibly 4 - still didn't open Exit yet): Lumines, Megaman Powered Up and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. My DS library is larger and better. I really enjoy it... and I'm getting a DS Lite soon. Waiting for the tax-free weekend. I'm excited.

The PSP could be better, <if it had> with more fun to play original IPs, and more responsive controls. The DS would still own it, though.

Edit: Ah, my bad, should've been more clear. I meant it could be better if it had more responsive controls.

i WAS a lite person myself, but my 360 definitely stole its thunder. Ive basically played/beaten everything good out there.

Im waiting for harvest moon DS

edit : i hardly think the PSP is more responsive, unless you changed the analog, and d-pad, and it STILL gets owned in the FPS department controls

Yeah I bought the PSP at launch. And I just got a DS Lite last month and I think I've already played the DS more. Brain Age, Meteos heck I even like the version of Tiger Woods golf that I picked up for $9.99. And the size of the cartridges are really more convenient than the UMDs. You can carry your whole library of DS games with no problem but you need a case or something to haul those UMDs around.

I'm not sure why the PSP doesn't do it for me. The screen is awesome. I really think it comes down to load times. When you put a DS game in you're up and playing in a few seconds. The PSP is just a production to load the game.

To be honest the most use I get out of my PSP is when I go on a trip and I convert a bunch of movies and tv shows to watch on the plane. But getting the video converted is big production itself.

UMD movies were a cool idea but they are too expensive.

The reason why many, including myself, didn't care for it was because most of the games just played like their console counterparts. Even if most of the DS's games are gimmicky, they feel like something new most of the time due to the gap between the DS hardware and console hardware.

But the PSP has one of the most fun and intuitive games ever, Lumines. I love that game. Plus, it finally got some great looking games like Daxter and Syphon Filter and the future looks great with Lumines 2, Every Extended Extra, and LocoRoco.

I love my DSlite to no end. I play it every day.

The psp is interesting to me as a piece of hardware, the screen is beautiful, but the games arent there for me yet. Although I do drool over those NIS turn based 'disgaea-like' games available for it.

Heres what would get me to buy a PSP tomorrow... a redesign that includes a hardrive, AND the ability to rip those umd discs to the hardrive to eliminate long load times. I dont care if you still need to have the umd disc in the system to play (to prevent piracy), but they need to allow for game content to be read from harddisk instead of umd drive. This would increase playability tremendously. And improve battery life.

The games for the psp seem to be on the way. The ps2 ports are declining and the original games are coming. But Im still not a buyer until they throw a hard drive in there.

PSP was a massive mistake for Sony. Save for a couple of titles, the games just don't appeal to me in any way, and the other downsides like hardware and software prices, load times, and durability issues completely sink it for me.

It looks like the PSP has become yet another impaled head on the fence outside of Nintendo HQ.

That statement is completely untrue. The PSP was in no way a mistajke for Sony. The PSP is selling great, even if the DS lite is outselling it (mainly in Japan). For Sony's first handheld, it has done fantastic. I bet no one really thought it would sell as well as it has, and take that big of a chunk of the handheld market from Nintendo.

Actually, many analysts, gaming sites, and magazine expected the PSP to be a runaway hit and kill the DS.

They didn't expect it to reach GBA type sales, but they figured it would sell like hot cakes and blow the DS away in the US and world wide.
