budget wise a AMD athlon 64 4000+ runs about $150 and can run top notch. And most are socket 939. SO make sure your mobo is socket 939.

how do i find out when certain CPU prices drop?
is there a site taht shows these types of estimates? cause i just started learnin bout Computer Hardware and im just a teenager my budget is about 500 dollars
im planning on looking for a...
$60-100 CPU , 40-100$ mobo, 20-40$ case, 75-120$ graphic card, 512mb of ram 30-50$, 120/300gb HDD for 50-90$
think that is possible?
i am patient so im willing to wait for the prices to drop
i currently have a stock PC with a MSI i845 mobo , intel pentiuem 4 cpu.with stock everything
so with 500 dollars its defintely an upgrade
any ideas of combos that are worth it?
oh yeah im planning on using this somewhat for gaming
something like Guildwars nothing too crazy

newegg.com is your friend.
You can get a AMD 3200+ for about $90 it is fully capable of playing games like half life 2. Just look around newegg you'll figure it out.

I wouldn't cheap out on the case and the powersupply, get a higher quality one.
Also, get a 1GB stick of RAM, not a 512MB.

the standard size is like 11x11 or something, All mid size cases should fit with any mobo. Not alway but like 99% of the time they will work.
The combo I posted will work.

Things you never skimp on (because they will be re-used throughout the life of several homemade computers):
Cases, power supplies, monitors.
Did I mention power supplies? Major brands ONLY.

I would recomend a 1gig RAM as well. 512 is just to slow now days. I am running 2 gigs right now.

I think that case is fine. It's nothing fancy, and with all your products not being top notch a big 550 watt power supply isn't neccesary.
