There is crazy demand for 1&2 because there is a vulnerability in the game that lets you run homebrew applications. That includes scene-developed games, memory card manager stuff, and unfortunately a way to play copied games.
Because of this, they stopped pressing new copies, and the old ones never got cheaper because of the demand. I have actually seen used PSO 1&2s going for over $50. That being said, the guys who make Action Replay are coming out with some sort of developer's dongle, which may obviate the need for PSO, which would destroy the 'black market demand', which would hopefully result in a lower price for honest gamers.

Because unless you're a hard core turn based card game addict, this game IMHO blows chunks. And if you're a fan of PSO ep 1 and 2, it is a major disappointment. If you like card games, I suppose you can call the game fun...but I don't, so to me it is slow, slow slow...individual battles/card duels often take a friggin half hour to complete. (God help you if you play against someone who puts a no time limit setting on the game!)
PSO ep3 has minimal english, so if you are an importer who can't read japanese, don't waste your money on this version. Japanese text is heavy in the import version...although it might be fun to get if you like randomly pressing buttons just to see what happens.
I'm really not sure about the "code theory" being the reason that PSO ep 1 and 2 is more expensive...it's probably just more popular than ep3.

Phantasy Star Ver.2 says US NTSC, Phantasy Star III says "Compatible with Game Cube™
For JAP/Asian systems, use Freeloader for other."
So I guess that answers any questions on wether it's in english or not. I would've bought a copy if it was. I have heard that this game can become very addictive if you give it a chance.
Phantasy Star Trilogy is coming out for PS2 in August so maybe it will either have all 3 old games or all 3 new ones combined in one game.

Actually fraeone is right. Apparently it allows hackers access to copy, create and distribute their own game. The fix has been made with Ep. 3. But the damage has been done. They've figured out a way to emulate N64 games on the GC, so there's your answer. Also, this version is cheap because it's the Japanese version not the US one.

Interesting aside, on the Dreamcast import copies of PSO weren't playable online with a domestic modem.
No idea if there's anything similar here, but Caveat Emptor if you're planning on using Freeloader to play this online with a us Cube/BBA.

I played my import copies of PSO on my DC with my american modem. The modems for the DC were universal (however, the DCs were not).
The modems for the Gamecubes are universal too. I played my import copy of PSO Ep 1 and 2 with a USA modem. I'm not sure about BBA though (my area only has dial up so I haven't been able to test it out myself). My USA GC was modded to play japanese games, and you can go online with them using a USA modem. Theoretically, you should be able to use Freeloader to bypass the regional lockouts on your Cube if you don't want to go through the hassle of having it physically modded, and then use a USA modem to get online.

Interesting... I had an import DC and the US version of PSO and I couldn't go online without buying a domestic DC modem and swapping it out.

There's an Action Replay code that translates most of the Japanese into English...
Good deal.
