View Full Version : Does "Wii" still bother you?

I'm just watching the Nintendo 2006 E3 conference again, and it's bringing me back to when "Wii" was such a repulsive name for the console, and everybody was up in arms about it.

Does the name "Wii" still bother you?

I still hate saying it in public.

Agreed. I find it impossible to sound credible or intelligent when saying "You think the 360 is cool, just wait until you see Nintendo's new...*cough*wii*cough*cough*"

I think its a bad name. I thought REVOLUTION was perfect. It doesn't affect me purchasing it though.

I actually kind of like the name when I hear it in my head but I usually refer to it as "Nintendo's New Console" instead of the "Nintendo Wii" when talking with my friends.

I don't plan on getting it, but I did like the name "Revolution" a lot more than "Wii"

It's like if Sega would have said, "Okay, code name Katana is officially the Sega Sex"

"IT MEANS SIX IN GERMAN PEOPLE!!! It's our SIXTH CONSOLE!" [

I dont have a problem saying it so long as I pronounce it "The Nintendo Wii". Which I wonder if that was intentional to get people saying the word "Nintendo" again. After all the NES was "The Nintendo" or just "Nintendo".

I don't mind it... it's not generally something I talk about with strangers, outside of GR or EB employees, and they know what I'm talking about, so I can't relate to some of you.

Do I like it? Eh. Do I like "Revolution" more now? Nah.

Oops! I did it again.

It never bugged me a bit, and still doesn't. I've said it in public, to friends or store employees, etc - with no concern.

It's grown on be a bit, though the Revolution would have been ten times cooler. I'm amazed Nintendo thought of a name lamer then the Xbox 360. Ah well, if it's a good system, I'm in for it.

While Revolution would've been cool, you have to look at it logically.

1. It's too long. Something short and sweet without abbreviations is the flavor
2. Try to get the average japanese guy to say it
3. It's overused. "Revolution" has already been used for a ton of other products (mostly audio and video equipment, I think some cleaning products too)

Wii is short, simple for all cultures, and unique. "Revolution" actually just sounds a bit cliche now...

And I just call it "The Wii" in public. Don't see how that could embarassing, unless our mind is just constantly in the gutter...in which case, you'd probably be embarrassed with Pee S pee.

Umm...a Japanese person would say it quite easily..they do it in anime all the time....Sailor Moon..Utena..even Dance Dance REVOLUTION, haven't you ever heard a Japanese news anchor say "Dance Dance Revolution"

And Nintendo Revolution is in now way longer than Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP, not even longer than Nintendo Gamecube...I've never heard someone say "Nintendo G3" instead of "Gamecube"

Actually it's twice the length of GameCube (4 syllables, compared to two, and the only abbreviation is "Rev" which was getting old, or "Revo" which is dumb.

I don't think I've ever heard a native Japanese speaker pronounce an "L" correctly. God knows it made my Discrete Math class hilarious.

Personally I don't mind it. It's different, better than the Nintendo 64 or Super Nintendo. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed both of those consoles but they really did lack flare.

I agree with a previous poster, I have no problem calling it "The Wii". It's short, simple, and indicative of the console itself. Hell, even my 5 year old is excited for it ... and he hasn't made one unirary comment about the name.

It's too smart and trendy by half. They wanted something iconic like iPod and got something funny like wang. I wasn't a big fan of Revolution, either.

It doesn't matter what they call so long as they release the damn thing. I prefer something more approachable for the Wii/Rev, something like "Fred" or "Rex". I thought the fake "Go" campaign that was floating around was okay. I like Nintendo Go better than Wii or Revolution. Still, it's no Nintendo Rex.

The name won't turn me off at all, I still have equal interest as I did when it was called the Revolution, even if it's not much. Although I did like Rev alot better...I hated this name from the start and still do. Those who apparently "hated" it when I came out I think were just following the crowd and not really thinking about it for themselves. I said it a few times to my friend the other day and it's just so stupid. Its stupid because you can make other meanings for the name, and it makes you sound dumb because you're using an English sounding word incorrectly! I still wish it was Rev but whatever....as long as I get my Mario/Zelda = D

I still think it's a bad name, but I never liked Revolution either. The name Revolution made Nintendo seem really full of themselves (which I'm sure they are), but Wii just sounds stupid.

Honestly I don't like most console names though, Playstation was fine but Playstation 2 & 3 are just boring. Nintendo I liked, but Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 were pretty boring. Gamecube sounds like a children's toy. Xbox sounds like a sex toy, 360 is okay but not great. Sega has great names though: Dreamcast, Genesis, Nomad, and Saturn all sound good.

I've always been okay with Wii, but then again, I'm one of few people who've come to understand that all VG consoles have lame names  People just have short memories. I was out of serious gaming for about 5 years when the Xbox came out, and I thought it was dumb as hell, didn't really think much of GameCube either. But at least both of those were accurate names. One was a box with an X on it, the other was a cube for gaming.

PlayStation (a station for playing?) is no longer stupid because it's been a brand for over a decade. At the time of creation it was easily as goofy as Wii. The stupid computer-ish voice that said "PlayStation" at the end of every commercial was always annoying as well.

Talking to the neighbor kid next-door about video games today. He's dead-center in Nintendo's target market. Conservative family, currently don't have video games in the house except Gameboy, but he wants games BAD.

Kid says: "The PS3 comes out for Christmas, right?"
Me: Enlightens him on PS3 release
Kid: "Oh, and what's that one that had a cool name and then they changed it to a really stupid name?"

No coaching on my part, he came up with that all on his own. And it perfectly describes how I feel about "Wii". Stupid, shameful name change.

Nintendo wants to target the "everyone" crowd but expects them to think like hard-core gamers. They don't think that way. They think on a very simple level because by definition they haven't been exposed to games to any significant degree. I love that Nintendo isn't selling their soul to be cool. But I HATE that Nintendo seems to be needlessly shooting themselves in the foot every time they stumble into coolness

It never bothered me personally, as I just like to play Nintendo's great games and couldn't give a shit less what they called it.

But it is a bad name marketing wise. No need for them to give the other system fanboys, and Nintendo haters in general, more fuel for the fire.

And many non-gamers (who they are trying to reel in) may just think it is silly/childish and be turned off.

Still a poor decision to change it, at least to that...it's cute that some people have convinced themselves that it's actually a good name though.

But see, that's okay, because people convinced themselves over the last 5-10 years that those are good names. So now we can ridicule the new name that we also won't think is stupid in 5-10 years.

I'm quite certain that there is probably a subset of the population that thinks every name Apple has used for products is dumb, and yet... no one cares. What you're seeing in the poll is not people "convincing themselves it's a good name," but the natural progression of brand marketing. Some people will always think it's dumb, but most will come to accept it as part of the new round of video game consoles with the 360 and PS3 and move on.

Never really bothered me. My very first reaction was that it was a fairly poor choice, but then it occured to me that it's the most original name for a new console since the Dreamcast and I quickly came around. Gamecube, Playstation, and Xbox are all pretty uninspired names. Naming a console Playstation or Gamecube is kind of like naming a movie about snakes on a plane simply 'Snakes on a Plane'. Who does that shit?

I've never cared for "Playstation," because the "station" part never hit home with me--comparing a console to a station just doesn't seem reasonable.

I thought "GameCube" was a good title for the same reason you didn't like it (ain't that the way?). It was moderately catchy, and the title itself described exactly what was going down. Plus, it was attached to an attractive little console.

I think a name for the Wii that was more in-line with the thinking of "GameCube" would have better served Nintendo's attempt to capture new gamers. The silliness of Wii is going to distract new gamers who wouldn't have otherwise been put off by GameCube. IMHO, at least.

I loved the name Wii from the getgo. Its simple, short, easy to say no matter what country your from. I think the logo looks fantastic. A much better name from Nintendo than 'N64' what the hell was that about? I like 'gamecube' as well tho.

Xbox is the dumbest name ever. Is that short for 'EXTREME BOX!!!' ? it probably is cos the Xbox is exactly the same size, weight, and color of a case of Mountain Dew. =p

Xbox 360? The ONLY reason they came up with that is cos a product called 'Xbox 2' would seem lesser sitting on a shelf next to a 'Playstation 3'.
