8/25 UPDATE: Games on the way! http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/top/penny-arcade-video-game-announced-196540.php
The first game, entitled Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, will be a comic adventure game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. No date has yet been set for its release.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another event you wont want to miss at PAX this year is the very first Penny Arcade panel. As usual we'll field questions from the audience for about and hour but then we have a surprise. At the end of our first Q&A we will make a huge announcement. If you're in the audience you'll be the first to hear what's next for Penny Arcade. Trust me, if you're a PA fan this announcement will kick your ass.An animated series, perhaps?
What are you guesses on what it could be?

Video game based on the cardboard tube samurai?

All I can think of is a video game based off of one their spinoffs.

While I'd love a 12 minute cartoon a la Aqua Teen on Adult Swim, PA's recent xfire chat shot down the rumors of a series:

cwgabriel: Question: LeonTheAsshat: I'd like to know PA stands as far Gaming and Publication is concerned and with the huge popularity that has come from such a great series. The rumors of PA The Series has been floating around a lil more actively since E3, but also popularity doesn't place food on teh table to a degree. My Question to both is how you guys deal with events like as well and The Rumor of you moving your offices is a false one?

Answer: We will not be doing an animated series. We've been approached multiple times and it never works at least not any time soon

cwgabriel: Question: craziivan: Gabe you said animating the PA strip wouldn't work, have ever done any animating otherwise?

Answer: I don't have the patience to animate. And really I am not saying it would not work, just that none of the people who have approached us yet have made us believe they can make it work. I'm not saying PA will never be animated. It just needs to be the right people doing it and we have not seen that deal yet. Like Tycho said all these hollywood types think they are doing you a favor.

A game sounds very likely...

I don't really think it's going to be a game.
It seems to me that a game based on PA would be the exact thing Gabe & Tycho would NOT be interested in.

Perhaps it has something to do with PAX 2007. Maybe a larger venue?

Maybe not based on PA, but I could see Cardboard Tube Samurai being a game.... they also have that fully fleshed out universe that I can't remember the name of that would probably make a good game.

I'm pulling for free t-shirts but I'll guess they're going to have a subscribers only section. It's just a guess so don't flip out on me, eh?

I'm really hoping they pick up the lost slack from E3 being downsized. Maybe even bring a new convention to LA.

TV show = death
Game = unlikely
Newspaper strip = unlikely
Announcement about the next PAX being a huge event = likely

They'd seem pretty hypocritical if they did so. They have ripped people who charge for stuff like that in the past.

It's hit and miss. Most comic strips are.

An announcement that is essentially to the effect of "We're the new e3?"

Yea, they were talking, and they said they do not want to become the next E3.

PAX is not the new E3. E3 failed. If someone else wants to be the new E3 they are welcome to it. They can even set up shop in the carcass of the giant and claim his power, but E3 is dead and it died for a reason. If I were them I wouldn't be in such a hurry to stuff myself in that coffin, and I certainly wouldn't boast about it.

I highly doubt the annoucement will be that, it sounds like Gabe hated the whole concept of E3.

Either that or a regular comic book series unrelated to the PA webcomic.

That sounds about right. They're close enough to DC or whoever to pull something like that off.

They talk about how they've started projects but never gone anywhere with them. For example, the last one I remember was a sort of noir drama. Before that, they had one about a sort of futuristic Wild West, with cybernetic arm cowboys and things.

I'm sure Tycho has no shortage of stories he'd like to write.

Maybe it'll be a sort of episodic short thing. Like for a few months they do the noir thing, then the cowboy thing, then maybe a generic PA universe thing, etc.

Yes, a video game is probably going to be it. Why would they announce their convention is going to be like E3... at the convention? It just doesn't make sense.

And anyway, they have already said they don't want to be the next E3, and don't get why other conventions would want to be either.

I'm guessing a XBLA Tube Samurai game or a small publishing studio.
