I'll play more later tonight if I have time. GG though!

yeah, that was a pretty good game. I realized you had some more important stuff anyway, and it looked like you were covering your tourney rounds, so I'm ok :)
I can't get on later since I start my new degree... a scary total conversion from Computer Science to Visual Arts Electronic Intermedia.... >_<

didt' realize it, but Cardfighters DS will be out October 2nd which is pretty soon. So soon I'm surprised it's barely been covered, but then again SNK's publicity wagon hasn't always been the best. This is fantastic news. Card Fighters clash is the only reason I own a NGPC.

If you have 1.5 use Devhook it can emulate up to 2.71 firmware which will allow you to play all games currently out.

I finally got around to buying a copy of KOF Neowave for X-Box today. $9 brand new, not to bad. I figured I probably wouldn't find a better deal. I popped it in for about 15 minutes and *YAWN* nothing new except young Geese and he's even boring. But I figured that's what it would be like, that's why I never rushed out to buy it.
I'd much rather just play my 2K2. That's got at least 10 more characters over Neowave. They should've made Neowave a Dream-match kinda game. Bring all the characters back with some diffrent versions of each. Kinda like SF Alpha 3. Even throw in some of the old music and Backgrounds.

I can't get into Neowave. I really tried since I want to support companies that make fighters, but after Neowave and SamShoV it's really hard to suport SNK. I'm a newcomer to KOF but somehow I was expecting more. I recently picked up copies of 95 and 97 for the Saturn but I haven't been able to really play them yet. Or should I try 02/03? Everyone seems to love 02 across the board. What do you guys think?

KoF 2003 and KoF XI really advanced the series into a league of its own... both games were absolutely great and a huge step up over previous incarnations.
It's just too bad it came way too late for SNK.

depascal22 - Neowave and SamShow V aren't very good, but don't count SNK out yet just because of those bad seeds. SamShow VI is a very good game. All the problems from V were fixed. Unfortunatly no news on a release to the states. And it's not a surprise you didn't like Neowave either. I'd strongly recomend getting KOF 2K2/2K3. And if you have the means look up KOF 98'. It came out for Dreamcast and many still consider it the best.
I play online, I kinda remember your Gamertag. Have you ever played SamShow V online?
That reminds me that I need to get the soundtrack for 3S... awesome music... just wish I could play the game with an acceptable controller.
I use the Nuby Tech Street Fighter controller for Third Strike. I think it works great.

Yeah, I like KOF 02 a lot better. KOF 03 is cool just because it has a tag feature (too bad MvC2 never made it online), but KOF 02 has a bigger and better roster IMO (I <3 Vanessa  ). I really do love that tag feature though. I just wish it was a little faster, like in MvC2.
I think I'll keep Neowave for collection purposes more than anything. I don't think I have tried that onlione yet.

That's also why I like 2K2 more than 2K3. The roster is awsome. The tag feature in 2K3 is great, but presonally seems a bit out of place for KOF. It feels like SNK threw it in there because that was the standard thanks to Capcom. I've always prefered the team battles to KOF more. I just wish they'd bring back some of my other favorites I haven't seen in years, like Krauser and Heavy D.

kof 2k2 is fun, never played against real people though... i played kula/athena/vanessa. i could never do vanessa's crazy infinite BC combos though =X
a lot of people didn't like kof 2k3 because of how broken duolon was... he has easy as pie 100% combos and a sick 50/50 mixup after his bnb combo (which was also insanely easy to get a combo off of). unlike mvc2, which is balanced and fun even with only 8 "playable" characters... 2k3 is just a sad duolon fest.

RodimusDonut -- Thanks for the info. I have KOF Dream Match '99 for the DC but not '98. Was it released in the US? We might have played SamShoV during the first couple days it was out. I jumped in and didn't really like who I was playing against so I just played the CPU until Neowave came out.
Guile -- I'll shoot you a friend request once I get a little practice in unless you're looking to beat the snot out of a KOF noob.
Is SamShoVI the same thing as SamSho Tenka? I've heard of Tenka alot on SRK but all I know is that it's supposedly much much better than V. One more SamSho question. Has anyone played SamShoIII for the Saturn? I just picked up a JAP Saturn and I'm looking to round out my fighting game collection for the system.

The wierd thing about KOF 98' on the Dreamcast, is it's called KOF 99' Dream Match. At the time they decided to change the year since the game was released for the system in 99' and they didn't want to confuse gamers. Also I think Sega demanded to change the year so gamers didn't think they were buying an old game. So the one you have is the real KOF 98'. And the real KOF 99 is dubbed "Evolution." Kinda confusing.
And Samsho Tenka and SamSho VI are diffrent games.
If you want to get a good SamSho for the Saturn get SamSho IV. In fact I have one for trade if you're intrested. Just CML for other Saturn fighter, I got a couple.

Whew. I'm glad I don't have to go out and find another version of KOF. I got lucky and found it at a garage sale a few weeks ago. I'll give it a go after I get a little practice with 2k2. Any suggestions on characters that are noob friendly for either game?
I'd love to trade for your SamShoIV but I don't have any of your wants yet. I might be able to score Metal Slug and Conker pretty soon.

i hear 2k2 is all about ABC... athena, billy, choi.
athena is so fun to use in 2k2. throw a fireball, teleport forward, and the screen doesn't move backwards so you get a free "corner" trap. =P plus she's a zoner character in a game of combos. it's too bad she got really toned down after that... she's so crappy in XI.
never used billy or choi though.
leona is fun too. v-slasher combos just look so cool =P i also liked o. chris just so i can do 16-hit combos that barely do any damage, although the consensus is that regular chris is much better.
now 98... i can't play that game. the controls are too tight and i can barely pull off a super =X

Thank you very much for all your input everyone. Now I just have to pick which game I'm going to play first. I managed to pick up most of them for cheap and now I'm stuck with the tough decision between '95, '97, '98, '00, '01, '02, '03, and Neowave. I'm down to '98 and '02 as my top 2 choices to pick up and learn. It's really tough to get back into 2D fighters after being away for so long. Before I picked up Guilty Gear Reload 2 years ago, I hadn't played a 2D fighter since I had Super Street Fighter II for the Genesis!

I think 97' is the worst to own if you want the best of the KOF collection. It was the end of the Orochi Saga, however gamplay-wise if you have 98' there's no reason to own 97'. KOF 98' includes all the characters 97' has plus more (except Orochi and Blood Riot Iori) Also I hated the ambient crowd noise instead of actual BG music.
As for Billy Kane, he's always been my favorite fighting game character. I'm humble most of the time, but I must admit I rock with Billy Kane.

Not sure if it's been posted but apparently arcsystem is working on an update to GuityGear called Accent Core. I think Arc Systems is doin a great job with Guilty Gear... well in Japan at least, we get shafted here like no other thanks to Sony.
A new company ALMOST had Sony's approval to bring GGXX Slash here but alas, it was never meant to be. :(
GG is so popular in Japanese arcades. They're always listening to the players to see what can be improved/balanced.

If the PS3 is region free for PS One and PS2 games also, my opinion of the machine will definitely swing in its favor over the Wii and 360. It may be a pretty penny to get those imported games, but to play them out the box is the way it should be. IIRC Nintendo portables have always been region-free and it never killed their market.

I honestly never understood how region-encoding benefits ANYBODY, on either side of the economic equation. Does anyone understand why this is done? I'm not being rhetorical here either, I'm legitimately curious as to why this is done.
I'm glad to see PS3 is doing away with it. What I'm wondering is how the region-free aspect is actually implemented. Can the PS3 itself read discs from any region? Or will the PS3 games simply be region-free?
How about Blu-Ray movies... are they region protected? That may provide some insight.
If the region-freedom is simply based on the discs themselves being region-free, then that kind of casts doubt on import PS1/2 games working. But if PS3 is actually designed to read multi-region discs, we may be on to something great here.

i remember reading about it, but not a lot. obviously, there's piracy issues... but i think one of the major things is import/export control, like if there's a game out here that's $20 but in japan it's $40 they don't want everyone buying the US one. kinda like what we're doing now to those english asian versions.

Oh...my...god...Arc System Works NEEDS to make a new game, whether it be a new Guilty Gear or otherwise. They've whored what is essentially the same game too many times (Guilty Gear X, XX, XX#, Slash, now this), with just incremental changes between each, and the changes between each game are just getting less and less.

I prefer the DC version of '02 as the controls feel tighter(even with a dc pad), plus the graphics don't look that pixelated like in the PS2 version. But I'd go with the 02/03 double pack, the extra stages, added characters (Geese, Goenitz, Riot Iori in 02, and playable Adel and Mukai in 03) more than make up for it. However the PS2 version seems to be hard to find anywhere, cept eBay.

I kinda have to agree. However the small screen doesn't bother me, as long as it's true to the series. But that would never happen. Capcom (or whoever) would confuse us by adding useless DS crap to the main gameplay, like the dual screen or touch screen. The idea is good, but it would never become what the "fans" want it to be.
Look at Guilty Gear DS. It would've been awsome if they kept it 1 on 1 without the dual screen platform. I think KOF Howling Blood 2 is great for the GBA. All the DS would have to do is make the resolution of the sprites a bit higher and have it WiFi compatible.

as long as it plays like street fighter, then it's good. if it's touch screen, then yes it would suck. just because a title goes on the DS dosn't mean it has to heavily use the touch or micraphone functions (look at new super mario bros).

Street Fighter DS... it's definitely doable without mucking it up. The touch screen could be used for selecting your character, and then you'd basically be done with it until the next match. The pre-match "___ vs ___" image could stay on the lower screen during the actual fights. It may seem like a stretch just to get some use out of the lower screen, but really no less than what New Super Mario Bros did (aside from the minigames).

I have one but I didn't choose the songs, it's all rap. Music with a lot of lyrics is very wierd for fighting games. Plus whoever made the custom mix had the music volume way to high, it makes it hard to hear the SFX. I'm not sure if you can change that.

2 unrelated questions
I) Where can I find a Melty Blood: AC tiers list? If it's to early for an 'official' one, can someone fill me in on who some of the better characters are?
II) Where can I get a Hori Real Arcade Pro? Playasia is backordered last time I checked. Markman, I'm looking at you in particular. If there is no webstore to order one from, would it be possible to buy one of yours?

I have one but I didn't choose the songs, it's all rap. Music with a lot of lyrics is very wierd for fighting games. Plus whoever made the custom mix had the music volume way to high, it makes it hard to hear the SFX. I'm not sure if you can change that.
But I'd like to have another one with my personal selection.
Here is a good tutorial on how to make your own custom soundtrack for MvC2: http://dhost.info/combomasher/index.html
(Although it seems to be down, it was working like a week ago so it should be back up soon.)
Anyone try that "Accurate Mix" MvC2 that is floating around? I just saw it at http://www.mininova.org, and it seems like it would be pretty good.

The NEC will be Dec 2nd and 3rd (Saturday and Sunday). It's in rented out hall on the bottom floor of some hotel, I've heard it's called "America's Best" or something like that. I think the list of games are still being voted on (try the Shoryuken forums), but all the obvious tournament favorites should be there.
Is the "UP" of which you speak "University Pinball"? I've never been there but I've heard of the place. It'll definitely be nice to play you in UMK3, the more the merrier!
I've been meaning to ask you, who do you play in UMK? I use Reptile and Human Smoke mostly, but know how to play at least half the cast.

My "old standbys" now tend to be Kano, Sindel, Sonya, and sometimes Liu Kang. I really like Kabal too but it's almost "impolite" to use him since he's so damn good, lol. A lot of times when I'm fightig people on Kaillera we just end up doing random select all the time. Which is cool, because at times I've been forced into learning a character that I never would have chosen normally. Do you play on Kaillera at all?

Back in the day, did any of you guys encounter the HACKED Street Fighter II Champion Edition cabinets? I saw quite a few of these, and I was wondering if this was pretty widespread or if my area just happened to be an epicenter of illegal PCB activity. It was weird, because when MAME started supporting these hacked versions I was like "whoooooa, I REMEMBER that!"
The first time I saw one of these was at a little antique store, and the guy behind the counter insisted that it was "Street Fighter 3" (this was in 1992). Sure enough, the cabinet had a very crappy-looking "Street Fighter III" marquee made up for it, and as a naive 10-year-old that was all the convincing I needed. Even though the in-game title screen still said "II," and the graphics were identical, I insisted on believing this was the real deal and I called all my friends to tell them about it.
Then there was a card store across the street with a different hack, a Pizza Hut down the block with another one, and off the top of my head I remember at least one mall and a "United Skates" skating rink that had another one (which was labeled "Street Fighter II Accelerator" on the title screen). And I know there were more that I encountered, but I'm forgetting a lot.
There was a lot of weird stuff in these versions; almost all of them allowed mid-match character changing by pressing start, and any special move could be done in midair (allowing you to jump afterwards, so you could keep doing specials and jumping until you went off the top of the screen and eventually came up through the bottom). Projectiles usually travelled up and down in a wave pattern as they travelled across the screen. In most cases, weak attacks would produce extremely slow special moves, while heavy attacks would produce RIDICULOUSLY fast moves.
Each version had it's own set of oddities, I'll just list some that I remember from various versions:
- Ryu and Ken shot two hadokens at a time
- Dragon punches would release a column of hadokens; the Jab version was particularly insane as it would produce a slow-moving hadoken wall of death that was impossible to jump over
- Spinning Clothesline would shoot a Yoga Flame out of Zangief's feet
- Tiger Uppercut shot a Yoga Flame out of Sagat's midsection (they seemed to tack on Yoga Flames to a lot of moves)
- Blanka would travel forward during his electricity.
- Zangief could do his spinning piledriver from anywhere on the screen
- no charge time whatsoever; Guile could just repeat Jab sonic booms and have like 20 on the screen at once
- CPU opponents would randomly teleport; combined with the mid-match character changes this could get particularly confusing
- Ken's heavy hurricane kick would hit about 8 times; you could simply re-dizzy your opponent with this until he died.
- "breakdancing" version of Chun-Li's spinning bird kick, with her head on the ground
- Sonic Booms would shoot out of Chun Li's lightining kick
- Diagonal or "heat-seeking" projectiles in some versions
- completely different music for E. Honda's stage

there were a few arcades near me that had those hacked SF2 games.
iirc, they had Accelerator and Rainbow Edition. They were really cool, but sooo so so so broken.
Rainbow Edition was fucked up! Ryu and Ken could fill up the whole screen with fireballs, so every match went down like that-- two guys choosing Ryu and Ken, getting tick damage till the end of the round >_<

I always wondered if people got in trouble for those or what. I mean these hacks would show up in some pretty mainstream locations. Then again you always see those fake nintendo consoles loaded with ROMs right in the middle of the mall, and they seem to get away with it.
I also saw a hacked MKII at this one comic store. It was referred to as "version 9.1." It was pretty tame in comparison to the insane SFII hacks but still pretty interesting. That one has shown up on MAME as well. Any other fighters get hacks that were actually in arcades?

I have a question which has been debated among my brothers and friends for a little bit now...
If you could add one more character from Street Fighter 2 to the line-up in Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, who would it be?
My choices boil down to Balrog, Sagat and Bison. I seriously think that seeing of any of them 3 in 3s would be incredible. Parrying into Sagat's 7-hit Tiger Upper would be fucking awesome, but I think in the end I'd have to go with Bison. I'd love to see how his Psycho Crusher looked with CPS3 graphics and can only imagine the sick combos w/ parry into Scissor Kick. Bison would just be to fucking sweet for words.

And as Chacrana was saying, Dudley doesn't play anyhing like Balrog even though he is a boxer. Dudley actually feels more like what a boxer should play. The HRAP1 is tons better than a Tekken 5 stick.
The main thing about it is if a button ever goes out on you it's easy to replace it. It's a pain in the ass with the T5 Hori. Also the joystick itself is a Sanwa stick and if you play on both you should immediately be able to tell the difference.
The Tekken stick for $30 is a good deal, esp since it comes with the game. Check your local EB/GS.

But no they don't make it for XBOX. The best thing you can do is either get a magicbox convertor or if you want a similar japanese styled arcade stick, you can go after a Hori Fighting Stick EX. But I really feel the HRAP1 is a better purchase quality wise. Esp. in the long run.

does anyone here who plays a lot of DOA4 have tips for Christie?

wish I could help asiancore, but I don't know much about Christie. The better players I've seen tend to use her faster moves and mid-hits to bait people into counters, then punish with that double jump kick move or a combo
Got the Asian version of Guilty Gear Judgment today...I have to say, Judgment mode is a shit load better than Isuka. No more turn button, yay! It's also a lot faster. Still pretty easy and not quite a legendary beat em up yet, but it's on its way. If they would just add some variety to the enemies and levels....
and Slash seems like a perfect port, though I'm not familiar with all the intricacies.
Overall, I'm pretty happy considering it was an impulse buy :)

I thought so too. He did another mix for Capcom vs. SNK 2, which he got better feedback on, and one for Super Street Fighter 2X, but I didn't really like either of these two. You can check out the preview videos at his site (www.stevemv.com (http://www.stevemv.com)) and if you like them, you can find the torrents there too.
I might check it out, I already play Capcom vs SNK 2 regularly on my PS2, so I'll have to see if it's worth a CDR and the hit to my ratio.
Let me ask you something, is the version of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike on the Anniversary Collection for the PS2 better than the Dreamcast version? I'm just wondering if I should waste the money on that, I know it has Street Fighter II (Well sort of) but I don't think $30.00 or whatever it costs right now is worth it until a few price drops.

Anniversary Collection has already seen a few price drops... I think it's MSRP is only $20 these days (or maybe that's the price I keep seeing it at).
Anyways, yea, SF Third Strike is arcade perfect on the PS2, and the Dreamcast one is slightly off on the timing of parries, IIRC. I might not remember correctly, though ;)

The SFA version of third strike is considered the closet to the Arcade version. Hence the reason it's used at evo2k. I have the DC and Xbox version and plan on buying the PS2 version soon. Out of the two I own I prefer the DC just because I have two agetecs and my friends enjoying using arcade sticks vs. controllers. If you have a Gamecrazy close buy they sell SFA for PS2 19.99 new.

I can't say it's worth the $40 just for the side-scroller, but it's def worth it for the whole package. yeah, the japanese version has slash, but you might as well get the asian version since it's $10 cheaper and there's no difference.
on the other hand, this time next year, Accent Core will probably be on its way to the PSP. If they do one more after that, they'll surpass SF2 in upgrades! pretty sure that's what ASW's goal in life is...

well, you get a GG character's move set, plus all the GG dashes(no blocking.) you can still do supers and all that once you fill up the tension gauge.
so gameplay wise, it's miles deeper than streets of rage or FF. It's much faster as well.
that aspect's better. but it doesn't have as much variety. It takes a bunch of missions before they start mixing up enemy types or give you a vehicle. the first batch of areas are pretty generic, though it definitely gets better. still, since you own Slash, you might want to wait for the inevitable fast price drop on the U.S. version to play Judgment.
if they added a wider space to walk in, more enemies(with names on their energy bars, of course), maybe some RPG elements like levelling up your character, weapons and stuff like that, the game would be legendary.

well, I actually don't have Slash... the Ebay seller never came through, but I did get my money back from that sonuvabitch. So at this point, I'm waiting for Accent Core to seriously play GG again (at least that's what I'm telling myself) so it wouldn't hurt me to get Slash for the PSP. Anyway, that kind of gameplay setup definitely does sound appealing... maybe I'll go ahead and import that Japanese version now since I'm impractical and spending money means nothing to my stupid ass.

US version has GGXX Reload and the Japanese version has Slash which is the updated version. Slash has 2 new characters, altered stages, and some gameplay tweaks. It's not supposed to be anything incredibly significant though so if you want to save some cash, the US version is probably the best option. If you're ultra-hardcore into GG though, it's probably worth opting for the Japanese version instead.

Hey, I've been playing DoA4 for a while now and still have yet to find a character that has my style of play. I still feel there's not enough veriety in the game and uniqueness between characters (a good point would be the ninja characters and leon/bayman/spartan). If each one stood out more (and they are all very close to that, but not yet) then I'm sure I'd find a character I'd like.

the ninjas are all very different...you mean Ayane, Kasumi, Hayate and Ryu, right? I don't think there's a duplicated move among all of them  but yeah, leon bayman and the Spartan all have the same move set with a few variations. I probably didn't come off clearly... what I was trying to say is that, yeah, they (the ninjas) all have very different movesets, but they all feel very much the same in the end (ayane may be an exception)... damage feels to similar, attack patterns seem a bit too the same, and they're all ninjas (jk... oh wait they are ninjas!... but still a jk...). If you take kasumi and hyabusa, they've both got f,f+K and go into a low attack kick, while f,f+k for ayane and hayate go into high areial 3 hit combos... and from there on moves start to borrow from each other (backflips, running attacks... etc.). I still prefer the Bayman clones over the ninjas, but partially since I prefer brute force characters a bit more. Then again, I am always in favor of military based characters in fighting games, plus the fact that I am really getting tired of ninjas nowadays...
on that note, what well known character personality types does everyone here lean more towards liking, either if you play them alot or not.
Like I said, I love the hell out of military guys: Dragunov, Ralf, Heidern, Rolento, etc.
as for girls, I still go for the top heavy types... no answers needed.
