It was 10 years ago that one of my favorite fighters, Samurai Shodown IV was released (hard to believe that much time has gone by). I played this all the time at college. Great stuff and great memories. It's a damn shame that this game never got a release (other than for Neo-Geo) in North America.
On another tangent, I want to play the Samurai Shodown RPG too!

Good title for the thread... I played a little of Samurai Shodown IV on an emulator a long time ago... I really liked the game at the time and I've been meaning to try and seriously play a Samsho game sometime. Eh, maybe when the collection comes out.

Wasn't there talk that the updated version of Samurai Shodown V (I forget the name of it), had a chance to come out in North America now that Sony has relaxed its policies a bit?

I don't think they specifically stated which Samsho games they were considering, but Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi would seem like the most likely candidate.

Have some good memories of Samurai Shodown IV.

tenkaichi plays like a dream. it has jsut abotu eveyr samurai shodown character ever made all crammed into one cd. if there were ever a game that needed translations, it would be this one. the menu navigation system is horrid! I had to click through 4 different menu screens once i chose my character to actually fight.

Doubt it... all they mentioned was the collections, because they are already translated from back in the day.
I doubt SNK is going to go through the work of translating a game like Tenkaichi just to release it a budget price in the US. I would be real surprised if they brought over stuff like Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, KoF XI, or Tenkaichi, since that would require actual work on their part and isn't just a means of making a quick buck.

I also doubt their commitment to bringing anything out over here that's not 3D now... there's really no profit in bringing over PS2 games after the PS3 comes out... especially not at a budget price. I halfway think that any plans that that one guy discussed will evaporate entirely.

Guile, If you're intrested, and don't already have it (and I'm sure you do.) I got a copy of SamShow IV for trade.
I wonder if great 2D fighters like SamShow IV and Real Bout 2 were more accesable to American gamers when they were new, would the series be more popular now? I remember myself and a bunch of friends wanting to play SamShow IV so bad, but never had the chance. Until we learned how to use NeoRage X years later, but the hype had died down. Back then I would've gladly spent hours in the arcade playing it, then a caouple months later spent $50 on a watered down PSX version. 10 - 15 years ago Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were being shoved down our throats, what if Sam SHow got the same attention.....?

Cool. I have at least one game on your want list (Conker), but I want to locate a 4 in 1 cart before we try to trade anything. Once I get a job, I'd even be willing to buy it from you.
I was lucky that we had a Neo machine with SS IV. I still think someone ordered it by mistake, lol. We never get cool crap here. It had KOF 94 too.
Once they got rid of the machine, NeoRageX is what tided me over all these years.
When SF and MK were being shoved down our throats, I remember Fatal Fury had just came out. I remember only being able to choose three characters but it was a breath of fresh air. World Heroes was out too and when I was living in Maryland a lot of people would play that. I wish SS would have gotten the same attention and I definitely wish Last Blade did. That game is what I wished future SS games would have looked like.

Oh yeah, SFII... I can finally play again. I talked to some guy in Bangalor and got things sorted out... at the very least, Comcast knows I'm a bit pissed as of late (Yeah, they keep track of it... they recognized me as the pissed off guy when I called a couple days ago.) Hopefully this will mean more reliable fights in SFII and DOA4.

Let me know when and if you wanna trade. There hasn't been much intrest in my import games so I don't expect to get rid of it anytime soon.
During the 90's SNK machines where very rare down in Florida too. I remember the first KOF game I played was 96' and I thouggt it was much better than Street Fighter. You get to pick 3 people!!! INSANE!!! I later got KOF 95' for PS1 and thus began my SNK craze. Plus the Fatal Fury anime helped me gain alot of intrest in the characters. I still wished they made a sequel to the Fatal Fury Movie. Plus the movie exclusive characters were cool, I was always thinking they'd later include them in the games. Jammin (I think that's right?) was badass.

Why don't people just play SF: AC? Is it just cause SF: HF is the new "hip" thing to play? They could put Clayfighter on X-Box 360 arcade and people will play it for no other reason other than it's new to X-Box Arcade.

That's true -- people will play pretty much any game that hits the arcade now... though I think there's 2 reasons people play HF:
1) The version on Anniversary Collection lets people choose what character variation they want which throws the balance off... a lot of hardcore purists hate that (though HF isn't quite perfect either so...)
2) The online community is pretty much dead for Anniversary... if it were still alive and the game were backwards compatible, I wouldn't bother with HF at all since I like SFIII way more.

I agree the balance gets thrown off with the all the diffrent versions. But I think it'd be more fun regardless. However having "fun" isn't the priority anymore, it's about your stats.
Anniversary isn't dead. Well HSF2T is.... kinda (there's a group of gamers that still play) But the 3rd Strike part is still very much alive. Although everyone playing is really good.
Silverpaw - I'm all for a tourney, but I bet in the end it'll be like 4 to 5 people. But I'll be more positive about it, I think we should set something up, even if it is just a couple gamers from CAG.

I think we would be all over 3rd strike but it's not BC. I agree that everyone hops on every 360 game like it's the next huge thing, but Sf2 is pretty damn good...despite sucking in every way except gameplay.
I hope they make AC and CvS2 BC, it would revive both online communities. especially CvS2..

For KOF's dofus it's defintly Shingo. When he first came out he wasn't a great character, but now he's got a pretty good style. And remeber Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter had that geeky Japanese guy for a secret character (Japanese version only)
Rozz- 3rd Strike is always filled with people (at least at night.) Very rarely do you fight a complete newb. They had afeild day with me when I first started. I had bad expreinces with people on SVC Chaos. Since the game is filled with bugs it's hard to find people who play for fun and not rank.

Who am I ?:
"Tekken sucks!!! The only thing that would make it better is have Dan, and he's gotta be rapping while eating a BLT."
Since the game is filled with bugs it's hard to find people who play for fun and not rank.
yeah, I was thinking shingo, but it was hard to decide... kyosuke seems like a good choice too.

Wavedashing has been in Tekken since Tekken 3. :)
Even though it's been around for that long, the US Mishima players are still way behind Korea and Japan when it comes to using them. They have tons of great Mishima players whereas the US you can count them on one hand. Maybe even a Homer Simpson hand.

I can't believe I never tried being D.Jin until yesterday. I used to be pretty good with Jin back in T3, but when he lost all his Mishima moves, I sorta started sucking as him. So when I chose to be D.Jin, I was surprised how similar he was to T3 Jin. Plus how can I not love someone who can shoot lasers from his eyes and fly? Looks like I have a new character to get good with.

then, one day, one of my friends who was really into the game came and just obliterated me with his DK and Ganon. then i played against the best guy in his crew and it was murder, i couldn't even get a single kill and was 3-stocked like every time.
i play marth/sheik/j-puff, with the occasional young link.

Gamestop / EB couldn't move these for months, and now all of a sudden they are $100 +. I was pissed because I lost the receipt to mine and wanted to return it to EB, but I'm kinda glad I never found that receipt now ;)

Yes... when I bought my stick a week before SF 2 came out the things were selling for $40 on Ebay, and the demand really wasn't there.
I guess since SF 2 came out, people really really want the arcade stick. For $100, they can gladly take mine.

The pad is tighter and more responsive, that's a plus. but the buttons are all slightly slower to respond, and the triggers and bumpers are seriously fucked. oh, and I'm back playing DoA4 and I'm almost done unlocking all the stuff in it...
I will say I now consider DoA4 the black sheep of the series in terms of enjoyment. I can't ever say I've ever had a fighter make me enjoy the first 15 minutes, then start to not want to even play the game at all after that. I say that the over "balancing" of itagaki ruined what made DoAU so enjoyable by me.
I'm also realizing the reason why I partially have a harder time enjoying the DoA series is because the games have the iffy-est hit boxes. You can pretty much never know where you opponent or your hit box will be after stunning someone... also, hits that shoudl obviosly connect sometimes never even hit just to not get someone overpowerfully owned... I'm not bitching about DoA4, just what took my enjoyment away from it. Oh, and yes, this is probably the worst costume set in any of the DoAs.

All I got next is to unlock tengu and finish everyones practice execises :)
also in terms of DoAX2, itagaki has already confirmed that those who have played DoA4 and unlocked stuff will be rewarded in DoAX2, but it sounds better than what was done with DoA3 and DoAXBV.

that's cool about the unlockables. If games are trickling as slow as they are now for the 360, I might get it on launch.
alpha is a bitch...I had to re-unlock Tengu since I have a different 360. She's ridiculously easy with people with fast jabs (I won with only jabs with Christie) and strong, fast moves (Hitomi, Ein, Hayate, Tina.) Then with Bayman and Kokoro and some others, she's very hard. Stupid AI.
I loved the offense slant to DoA4, but now I kind of miss being able to defend myself more often and side-step. I could also use an extra second or two to plan my next moves. shit, even dashes could use an extra half-inch. while we're at it, zoom the camera out a few feet  Another patch would be nice to fix some little things about the game, but it'll never happen. the game is about speed, move set knowledge, recognizing beginning frames to those moves and the reflexes to break or counter them now. you don't punish unsafe moves, you punish them as they're happening with a faster move. It's too fucking nuts for my old ass.

Yeah, I checked the 360's release calendar just recently and as far as exclusives go this year, there's Gears of War and... uhm....
So DOAX 2 is a must have at launch for me.... okay, it would've been even if there was a decent selection on the system.

Eh, I'd rather have that for PC. Or better yet, not at all.
I was thinking the 360 would avoid becoming a paperweight for an extended period of time, but god damn... hopefully 2007 will be the year...
then again, I'll be playing Metal Gear Solid 4 and DMC 4 in 2007... so MS is gonna need something big. I think I'm a bit too much of a pessimist when it comes to gaming, but for God's sake, the Cube and the Dream-fucking-cast are seeing more usage this year than the 360.

so far PS3 is already winning in terms of best fighting... it's got the backwards compat (probably 98% of the games work) so thats a start, plus Tekken 6 and VF5 as exclusives are a win/win for everbody.
The only plusses for fighters on 360 is SFIIHF and DoA4, and both are not the newest or greatest. I still think SFII is the best fighter on the system, but I hope for more (SNK games in arcade please!).

I might (if things dont come up, I might have to do some crap tonight) be up for some DOA:U tonight. My record before was C- I believe but after I sent in my Xbox to get fixed I believe my DOA: U record was deleted, as well as my SVC Chaos one (it was like 18 wins out of 72 though....) Damn, out in the first round? I probably don't stand a chance then...
I'll be playing in the tournament using the regular controller since I'm in the process of selling the DOA 4 stick. I'd much rather enjoy that profit than the stick especially since that new Hori one is coming out... I'll probably get a custom down the road anyway.
And on a side note: Melty Blood Act Cadenza is awesome. As in, I think I might like this more than KOF XI and as you guys probably know, I frickin' loved that game. The game's easily the fastest fighting game I've played and it seems as though there's really a lot of depth to it given the prevalence of insane combos in the game. Really, the only thing missing is a little girl who shouts "ooniiichan!!!" when she dies. But then, it's based on an anime so maybe it's actually in there somewhere.

I'm using Vermillion right now... her winning pic where she's drinking blood like it's a juice box is awesome... she fights pretty good too I guess.
I actually think you know me a little too well now because I was sorta considering Tsukihime... but I've heard the same thing from other people -- that it's boring... so I probably won't bother. Did you get my PM I sent you about the sticks? I checked out your auction title, its way too vague I think. I listed mine under "Xbox 360 Dead or Alive 4 Hori Arcade Stick" and sold each of them within a day, with the most recent sale being this Friday.
I sold my open one for $100 (before the market got real flooded) and my two sealed ones for both $100 and $115. I say jack up the price of your open one back to $80 and re-do the title. Your prices for the new ones are good, they should sell at that price.

I hate the way people talk in Oblivion, couldn't care less about the story and the quests where you have to wait for NPCs to do something are just atrocious.

As for FPSes... not too many options on the 360... I wouldn't recommend Far Cry Instincts... maybe try playing the FEAR demo over and over and over since that's easily going to be the best FPS on a console.

That's the thing though -- the game isn't really anime rock or j-pop at all... most of the music sounds extremely different from what's typically in a fighting game.
Though Tekken DR's soundtrack is really good... albeit, far angrier. As for Melty Blood's lack of testosterone, you have to keep in mind that bitches beating eachother up is awesome.

Sorry I haven't read through all the pages so I don't know if it's been covered, but is anyone letdown and/or bored with fighting games these days? I'm not a fan of 3D fighters, and the best 2D fighters are already out (or so it would seem).
At least Melty Blood is coming out on PS2, maybe it'll get a stateside release.
I just think that most fighters that come out in this day an age aren't as accessible to the average joe, and that is why they have become a niche genre now. The most popular 2D fighter in the last ten years, in regards to the amount of people playing it, was Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It's controls are much simpler for a casual player to jump into and gets more than just the hardcore fighting fan interested. Same with DOA, but it tends to be criticized as a button masher (which really means it is a game that is noob friendly). We need more games like that that the general public can get interested in. That will make it more likely companies will take a chance on porting some of the more obscure Japanese titles to NA.

At least Melty Blood is coming out on PS2, maybe it'll get a stateside release.
Ain't gonna happen. That thing is tied up in licensing hell, it's based (somewhat) on a hentai game, and it's a no-name franchise from a no-name developer.

Just played Melty Blood for the first time yesterday and I like it but not enough to mod my PS2 for. Besides, I picked up a JAP Saturn yesterday and 12 new games! This might belong in the bragging forum but I thought you guys would appreciate my haul much more than the average joe.
Sega Saturn with 2 controllers
Street Fighter Collection
Vampire Night
Last Bronx
Fighters Megamix
Virtua Fighter 2 and Remix
Deep Fear
Fighting Vipers
KOF '95 and '97
X-Men: Children of the Atom
Christmas NiGHTS
See ya guys in a few days.

Came back from EVO2006. Finally back in San Diego.
What an awesome tournament.
Btw, David Sirlin unveiled Capcom Classics' Collection 2 to the crowd. Showed off the arcade perfect port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo and it's options. Wonderful! ST is back for EVO next year! Look for it in November!
Ok I'm going to sleep.

It's really arcade perfect? That's awesome. I was buying the collection regardless, but it's nice to know that Capcom's been putting effort into the port process... now if only they'd hurry up and start porting some CPS 2 games.

... is anyone letdown and/or bored with fighting games these days? I'm not a fan of 3D fighters, and the best 2D fighters are already out (or so it would seem).
there you go that's your problem ;)
The problem is that the 2d fighting scene seems to be pittering out and in need of new franchises that bring a whole lot of new ideas. The only most recent ones that seem to be doing that are guilty gear, melty blood, and rumble fish. I just think that fighters are having a harder time finding new places to go.
as for 3d fighters, thats where most of the new stuff is, though it is going to need newer stuff soon, since alot of ideas may be getting old. IMHO virtua fighter keeps refining itself, but feels the same, and DoA and Tekken seem like they are at their peek all time best, so it's hard to see what they'll do next (though I'm sure they'll both do fine).

I realize that, and it makes Baby Jesus cry. Poor Baby Jesus.
As for the fighters you mentioned, I REALLY don't like Virtua Fighter, Tekken hasn't been good since 3 (even though I liked 4, BLASPHEMY!) and DOA is iffy. Alls I know is 4 sucked
I just hope Soul Calibur 4 comes to the 360.
someone needs a rectal check for not liking tekken 5  jk. Tekken 4 had some great elements that I wish were in tekken 5 like the dark design but oh well...
and I know it's just me, but post Soul Calibur DC, the series has gotten a bit overated, though I do enjoy the much needed changes in part 3 (mainly characters being more distinct now).

If Law had shaved it'd be a perfect 10. Something about his goatee just screams suck to me.
in Tekken DR he has a customization to go beardless. I still prefer the scruff since I like hair on my guy characters... heck, my Tekken DR Kazuya has a full grown facial beard and goatee and I still need to add the chest hair to my ganryu sometime soon.

I haven't played Virtua Fighters in years, not since the second one? At the nickel arcade. :D
As for Tekken, I hadn't played one since the first one, but I recently got Tekken 4 and have been enjoying it. I'd love to find that Tekken 5 with arcade stick so I can get into that. And I'll wait for a price drop for Tekken on the PSP.
And as far as DoA goes, meh... I hate those games.

I can see why a lot of people are bored with fighters....mostly because the learning curve is relatively high and the genre takes some dedication. There also isn't much gripping backstory or gimmick...it's almost purely about the gameplay.
I kinda realized this when I read the Tekken: DR review in game informer. it was good, but lukewarm because they felt like the series hadn't progressed much. They had the same criticism of DoA4 (which got a higher score only because GI favors accessibility.) I highly disagree that they're all the same but I see where they are coming from as non-hardcore folks and understand why the review wasn't glowing.
Of course, fighter fans know the difference, but even then, I wonder about the future...VF5 will almost certainly replace VF4:Evo as a "3-D fighter that you can play forever and still not learn everything" (a very good thing, imo) and I wonder what Tekken 6 is going to do to innovate or not. Itagaki has hinted that he won't make another DoA game (and indeed, helena's ending is very conclusive for a video game.) That may not be such a bad thing...fan input kinda screwed with 4, I think. I'd like to see Team Ninja make some new fighter IP.
and then there's SNK, who will singlehandedly keep the 2-D fighter genre alive in the future? yikes. I mean, I've warmed up to them, but I still kinda feel like they aren't as good as Capcom. Hopefully Arc System Works will make more original IP and bring it to the U.S.
anyway, yeah, sorry for the long old-timer post :-P cliff notes: I love what we got, but wonder about what's next

I just got done reading the Rival Schools issue #2 comic. It was pretty good. Continues the story of the first one (dont want to post any spoilers) and the art is decent. I just hate paying $4.95 when the comic is black and white. Anyway if you enjoyed the start to the series with the first comic I would go pick up #2. I dont want to get to in depth because I dont know if you guys want any story parts told and I dont want to ruin anything. Overall I think it shaping up to be better then Darstalkers but not as good as SF.

I'm fuckin in love with fighting games.
By far it's the deepest genre when it comes to playing/learning/longevity. Communities keep these games strong!
Tekken 5 is going to die now(hopefully for good) and we can all wait for the goodness(hopefully) that will be Tekken 6. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in the meantime!
I'm going to be playing lots of Tekken Tag Tournament and Super Street Fighter II Turbo for the remainder of the year. I also want to learn Virtua Fighter 5. There's so many good fighting games out there it's rediculous.
Wait til' you guys see the EVO2006 vids. There were tons of great fights.
I ended up playing the #1 Tekken player in the world in DR. Played a first to three games set money match with him. He spanked me bad, only got 1 round in lol.

Also...
When Street Fighter II came out, it was THE game for multiplayer human vs. human action. The along came a game named Doom, then Quake, then UT...
FPS took over as the dominant form of human vs. human video game competion (and to a lesser extent, sports games).

Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken 6 are going to make not having a PS3 a very very painful thing. I've been able to hold off on buying the 360 because of the lack of any AAA fighting games. Virtua Fighter 4 made me buy the PS2 and 5 is going to try it's hardest to make me plunk down 600 bones at the nearest Costco.

i always thought fighting games could be fun for everyone if they just included better tutorial modes. most games have really crappy manuals because of the tutorials they throw in the game. fighting games just throw you a move list and you're expected to know the concepts of frames? crossups? heck, a lot of people i've met don't even know what a cancel is. and VCs/CCs? forget about it.
mainstream press loved VF4 and thought it was the deepest fighting game ever because the tutorial mode showed you how deep it was, step by step... they even taught standard tourney juggles. when SF2 came about, people could rely on the mags for legitimate strategies... you could buy an EGM and see real combos/redizzies as they were being discovered, but that's not the case anymore... like in gamepro, with mvc2 combos like "launch, WAIT UNTIL HE FALLS BACK DOWN..."
so not only is the learning curve enormous, but you don't know where to start, unless you're internet savvy. heck, even the internet isn't as accessible anymore... google third strike and you'll get hits to gamefaqs/ign/1up etc. i miss the old yahoo search engine with its categories so you could find dedicated fan sites...
now i feel like an old geezer. heh =P

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in the meantime!
Playing T5: DR on my PSP makes me long for T5 on PS2 (with a stick!), which in turn makes me go to the arcade and play T5: DR. I have such a good time, I go home and play T5: DR on my PSP. And the cycle begins anew...
Just picked up a T5 data card on my last trip, and I have no idea how to use it. Someone tell me.
MarkMan
08-22-2006, 01:57 AM
Basically each card entitles you to a character usage and 500 plays before it expires(you can transfer data onto a new card). One character per card.
So make sure you pick the right one or you'll need another card.
Basically you earn G every match whether you win or lose(of course you earn more by winning, and winning vs higher ranked opponents). There are also roulettes that enable you to get a multiplier for more G after matches.
It also keeps track of your win/loss record and of course, enables customization on your character.

Playing some CvS2 last night just made me think about how cool it would be to educate myself during lunch break at work. I mean there are FAQs I could read, but having visuals would be so much better.

I was playing some SSV a couple nights ago and luckly a couple guys were on. The SSV trash has filtered out and everyone that plays now only plays for fun (and that's about a total of 10 people). didt' realize it, but Cardfighters DS will be out October 2nd which is pretty soon. So soon I'm surprised it's barely been covered, but then again SNK's publicity wagon hasn't always been the best.
It's also worth noting that Melty Blood has the best stages and music of any fighting game ever. I like it better than Guilty Gear's soundtrack.
I'm gonna have to say that Street Fighter III Third Strike has the best soundtrack of any game ever. I liked it so much I even went out to order the soundtrack off Amazon.

in the corner, it's character specific.
actually, midscreen, i see people do other stuff too. most likely depends on character.
i remember on ken, trying to do...
target combo xx GJ - s.mp - f.hp - f.mk x2 - hp palm - f.mk x2 - hp palm - dp+hk - dp+mp - qcf+lp.
i think. i don't remember. best way to learn is to just practice a lot... i ask my friends how to do it and they don't really know, they've just been doing it so much that it's ingrained into their muscle memory =P
as for that midscreen shoulder, i think the appropriate strength is mp.
