Notice the wording. "Games", not "Game". Just wanna point that out.

I for one, think this games deserves that title. Never had I played an RPG that had such a great storyline. the Battle system was awesome to with the materia system. these were top notch graphics and cinematics back in it's hey day and I love how it's still talked about today. I would LOVE to see this remade for the PS3.

I admit this game was a bit overated as well and sometimes cheap(if you could cast kotr 2X in the final battle, you win.) But it was an awesome 60+ hours of fun for me.

Your thoughts?

Just in case anybody HASN'T seen the PS3 tech demo: Here is a side by side comparison with the PSX version.

Certainly not one of my all-time favorites, but it is a good game and better than a lot of the crap on their list.

EDIT: FF7 is especially better than most of the RPGs on the list, their still missing the best.

Nope, they have the best--Chrono Trigger.

It deserves the spot and GS rightfully gave that honor to other befores before it that were more deserving.

And I second Chrono Trigger being the best RPG ever.:)

I still think FF6 is better than FF7. The story is better, the gameplay is better, and the music is better. The only thing FF7 has better are the cinemas.

I would prefer to see FF6 remade for the PS3 so that it can finally get the attention it deserves.

it's THE rpg that got me into loving rpg's today, it was one of the greatest experiences in gaming i've ever had. But I wouldn't pick it as the best game ever...but it is up there. The ending to FF7 was just fucking horrible though, i mean come on. I'm playing FF8 right now, it's very meh..

But would it have killed them to choose a style with the CG's and stick to it? Most of them feature the blocky models, but other's {like the motorcycle chase) use nearhuman models... but this game is still fun

I agreed. FF6 was better, it was the rpg that made me understood what an rpg was and then into playing Chrono Trigger - which is another great rpg.

Well actully it was a list of greatest games. Not THE greatest game. However the greatest game ever would be Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6.

Another poor choice to add to a subpar list.

I like FFVII at first, but after leaving Midgar the whole gameplay changed...

It could have been much if it abandoned the overorld stuff which just made it too much like any other RPG, travelling from town to town doing shit.

i agree, i mean it doesnt have the best storyline of all time. personally i liked the materia system. but the game was such a huge jump for games, and ive told people before that this game got me back into gaming. i had no systems and when this game came out i finally bought a playstation and i was back. and i think its the same for a lot of people.

Hmmm...most of those games on that list I'd definitely say would fall under "Groundbreaking" rather than "Greatest", but it depends on the degrees. Personally, I think that FF7 is not one of the greatest games of all time (although I can see why in other peoples' eyes) but it most certainly put Japanese RPGs on everyone's radars in the gaming community.

Agreed. The only two games on there, that I agree with, are Dragon Force and Chrono Trigger.

FF7 was an ok game, that is overhyped due to the fact that it was most people's gateway into RPGs. I had been playing RPGs for years prior to FF7, and I saw nothing special in the game. While it's better than garbage like FF8, that's really not saying much.

QFT.

That was my first "real" RPG (Other that SMRPG on SNES) that had a somewhat somber tone to it. I can probably say alot of gamers connected to alot of characters in this game. Plus, The cinematics really made an impact for me at least. It was the first time I've seen it in a game. If it wasn't for FFVII, I don't think I'd be playing RPG's much nowadays.

so...it's one of the most influential games

dastly75
08-13-2006, 02:25 PM
It may be the most influential game of all time but it's definitely not the greatest game of all time. Wait I think Super Mario or what not was the most influential right. Anyways.....FFVIII>FFVII

willardhaven
08-13-2006, 02:37 PM
Overhyped yes, but to claim it as "nothing special" is to disregard that it was revolutionary in scope, production value and quality for an RPG of its era.

Sure we were enjoying games like Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Lufia, Wild Arms, etc. but Final Fantasy VII took the throne as the RPG to play for quite some time.

Rei no Otaku
08-13-2006, 02:49 PM
Oh I'm disregarding it. I'm just nice like that. It sure didn't take my throne as the RPG. Chrono Trigger kept that throne until Suikoden 2.

When I think of FFVII, I do not think of greatest game of all time. I look at it as the game that helped people realize that RPG's were a genre not just set aside for nerds. It created the explosion in the US that gave other series a chance.

QFT. I mean, c'mon, they have Michael Jackson's Moonwalker on that list--lol!! Now, personally I've never played it, but there's no f-ing way I'm ever going to believe that any game starring Michael Jackson is one of the greatest games of all time!!

willardhaven
08-13-2006, 03:17 PM
The Moonwalker arcade was sick.

Ah kids.

EDIT:
As for their list, it's just a way for them to rave about games they love personally, not so much a real "Greatest Games" list.

I mean, throwing rocks was probably the first physical game invented, just because it was the first attempt at a game doesn't mean it's great.

Sites like Gamespot don't have enough wit or intelligence in their collective intellectual pools to do anything aside from list things and count down the ______ of history/all time/etc.

Going back to re-making this for the PS3:

If sony doesn't remake this game for the PS3, you think fans will take it into their own hands and remake it 5-10 years from now? That would be awesome to see a Tribute to this game as they did for Chrono Trigger.

And then Square-Enix would shut them down just like they did with Chrono Trigger Resurrection Project because Square-Enix sucks ass.

Am I the only one that finds most RPGs boring..? I only played through about half of FF7 (the year it came out, since it was such a big deal), and I quit because I just found myself pressing X over and over and running around for hours at a time. I actually spent a lot of my time at the Gold Saucer. Then when I realized I was spending most of my time on mini-games to avoid the main game, I quit.

I'm with you. FFVII is one of the few games that has ever literally put me to sleep while playing it. After that, I didn't really see the point in continuing...and yes, fanboys, from what I'm told I was about halfway through the game so I did give it a fair chance.

Traditional turn-based RPGs are VERY boring to me. OTOH, RPG elements added to strategy games (Shining Force) or action (Secret of Mana) seem to equal some of my favorite games. But games based almost entirely on menu navigating and cutscenes a la FFVII? No thank you.

Yeah, when people praise a mediocre game it's common for others to try and let people know what are actually good games in the genre.

Wow. So you're saying Tetris, Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World, Starcraft, Castlevania: SotN, Legend of Zelda: OoT, and the Legend of Zelda aren't some of the best games ever?

Sony can't do shit as it's not their game to remake, it's Square-Enix's game to remake or not.

Yup, I'm saying it.

Tetris: Fun as hell. One of the greatest games? No.

Both Marios: I don't really like platformers, and I never really liked Mario.

Starcraft: Don't like RTS

Symphony of the Night: Great game. Aria and Dawn of Sorrow are better though. So I guess they'd be "greater" games.

Zelda: I hate Zelda, especially OoT. Hated it back when I played it on the N64, and hated it when I tried again on the GC. I'll have to pass on the vasoline smeared graphics, and sucky controls thanks.

So yeah, lmao.

So FFVII made Gamespot's greatest games list. Is it really so ceremonious an occasion as to warrant its own thread?

Many of the games on that list suck ass.

Xenogears? That has to be one of the worst RPGs ever. However, it has it fans apparently, as I know someone else who thinks so also and this thread.

Since it's brought up, I thought Final Fantasy X was a great game.

On the topic of Final Fnatasy VII, it was a bit too psychedelic towards the end for me. It was great and engrossing up until then though.

Without getting controversial Final Fantasy IX was my favorite of Playstation era and beyond.

About Gamespot, I have not visited nor read anything from them in years. Same with IGN. I think they both suck so bad, that I just come here and scan the news forum about once a week or so when I think of it.

Fun is subjective. To millions out there, Tetris was fun when it came out and it still is fun as hell, which is one of the reasons why it's a top candidate for one of the best games ever.

Well, I guess it kind of proves it. I wouldn't trust someone's opinion about VII if they discredit games like Tetris, Star Craft, and Mario.

I do not like Mario, I don't like the character, the world, or the brand. But I love the game mechanics, I love what came from the game, and I love the improvements that the genre has experienced through the years, therefore I think it certainly belongs on that list.

And that list is quite complete: Dragon Force, Samurai Showdown, Street Fighter, and the 3rd mix of Dance Dance Revolution. I think they have an idea of what they're talking about when they throw the term "Greatest games ever" around.

Yeah, I don't agree with every choice of theirs, but they do have some inspired ones. But then, who agrees with every item on a top ten or whatever list?

I would hope you wouldn't trust the opinion of some stranger on the internet. Not exactly the most reliable source.
