"XNA Game Studio Express will ignite innovation and accelerate prototyping, forever changing the way games are developed," Satchell said. "By unlocking retail Xbox 360 consoles for community-created games, we are ushering in a new era of cross-platform games based on the XNA platform. We are looking forward to the day when all the resulting talent-sharing and creativity transforms into a thriving community of user-created games on Xbox 360."

This sounds pretty cool. I wonder how they will deal with submissions though, they can't just put up any submitted game on live can they? I also wonder how the money will work, like if you submit a game that is downloaded a lot, can you make money on it?
Or maybe I'm looking at this wrong and there will just be a P2P way to share the games.

Talk about potential.
The question is, will users be able to create multiplayer games playable over Live?

So what does this mean, exactly? Anyone can develop for XBLA? How would these games get distributed to everyone (I'm guessing the $1,000 kit would provide for this)? Would there be a testing/quality control process?
I really like this idea as I'm sure there are more than a few talented people out there that will create some great games ala Geometry Wars. I'd actually love to see a top-down 2-D ripoff of Zelda with a huge overworld and 12 complex dungeons... imagine that in widescreen 780p...

If you go by the cut MS takes off of XBOX Live Arcade games you can assume it will be similar. Currently MS takes 25% and developer gets 75% from arcade games.

That sounds awesome. The Wii's Virtual Console is doing something similar to this, right? Ha ha no flame wars please, this is an idea that I welcome on any console... the more the merrier.

Great Idea here by M$.
Didn't Sony release something like that? The linux kit I think it was called? What became of that?
This has some negatives too.. For 1 you have to pay $100.. and For 2 you need to pay that fee to play the games that the people make.. idk. I might just drop the $100. It's a great idea. I have been wanting to try something llike this for a while.

I'm skeptical. There has to be some fine print or something that really makes this not such a great thing.
This sounds too good to be true.

This sounds cool since it aligns with my planned studies for grad school.

Sounds like a great idea. Hopefully it leads to more original and fun homegrown games and not a bunch of crap Geometry Wars knock offs or something like that.

I wonder how this will effect the security(already partially broken) of the xbox 360?

yeah, the net yaroze. Only available in Japan and not a huge success since, IIRC, you had to buy a $700 console.
Also, the only really "fair" catch i can think of is this: to buy the game, you spend points on XBLA. A fraction goes to sony, and a fraction goes to the maker, but they are still points. a huge success means you essentially have worry-free access to any Live Arcade game, but if you want to exchange your points for cash, Microsoft takes off another fraction, leaving the developer with either all the Microsoft Money they could need, or real life peanuts.

This is apparently how it will work... for those who asked about making money.
This enthusiast offering will be followed next spring with a professional offering, allowing small studios to sell the games they're developing. While they have no price point fixed just yet, they did tell us they "are looking at a price point of absolutely under $1000," a fair share cheaper than existing devkits.

 sad... I've brought this up many times before that I've owned this game engine for abotu 2 years now. This one is a 360 specifiied version... in actuallity, it's Torque Shader Engine + 360 tools.
It's an awsome game engine, and I have a thick ass book on how to use it, but when you start getting into the details, prepare to go nuts if you're not the analytical type.
oh, and here they are:

oh, and friends of mine and I have been trying to work on a title, but people in Miami are too lazy to want to do anything :(

You know, sony had a great opportunity to seize this market both with the PS1 (Net Yarouze) and the PS2 (PS2 Linux Kit). If MS can capitalize on this I think it will be the end of Sony as we know it. I know I will be signing up.

there's two relating simples reason why they never capatilzed on this:
-Microsoft's strong point has always been software, but weak with hardware
-Sony' strong point has always been hardware, but weak with software
in terms of game development tools, Xbox and Xbox 360 dev tools are way way way more user friendly than anything ever designed ont he PS2 and PS3 (though sony seems to be working hard on making the PS3 more dev friendly). In the end, the power of everything really evens out. Developers have more to work with on the PS3 in terms of hardware, but it's harder to get working 100%, wheras 360 developers have easy access and immediate use of hardware through software, but there's less to use.
