View Full Version : Do you think PS1 RPGs will get MORE expensive?

I'm a 17 year old guy with only a summer job to make any money, so I'm tight on cash. But once I get into college, I'll be even tighter.
Right now, I have a decent size PS1/PS2 RPG collection. I know it's not the biggest or most expensive collection, but it's a start and I've beaten most of them, I like every game I have. However, I'm really worried that prices on RPGs will go way up and by the time I'm out of college I'll be spending $400 on Valkyrie Profile or something. Do you think RPGs will drastically go up in price--should I start buying now--or will the market be about the same in a few years?
Here's my RPGs:
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
Persona 2
Chrono Cross
Lunar: SSSC
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Anthology
Final Fantasy Chronicles
Final Fantasy Tactics
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Radiata Stories
Disgaea
Magna Carta
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
So, I've got about $500 put away to spend on games for the rest of the year. Chances are, I'll be spending $250 on a Wii plus a game or two, so that leaves me with $150-$200. But if Valkyrie Profile is going to skyrocket to $200 or something, I'm going to want to buy it now. If it'll drop in price, I'd rather save my money. What do you guys think?

No, many games these days are getting reprinted, such as Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. Not only that but XBL will be providing gamers with downloadable PS1 games soon, starting with Castlevania SOTN. Can't say that all these RPGs will sure follow but I wouldn't be suprised if some did.
at the same time the price could drop. Remember how shadow hearts price when up and later drop again? I mean Disgaea already got reprint several times.

who knows.
I think the only sure bet right now are the Persona games, when Persona 3 comes out and some Final Fantasy games when FFXII comes out. Maybe Xenogears but there are a ton of cheap copies on ebay right now.
maybe Thousand Arms, brigandine too, maybe DDS, maybe Nocturne, maybe maybe maybe.
all depends on whether they get reprinted or not.

i say 100 to 150 is the top you will see rpgs going for . Look at Panzer dragoon saga. That has to be one of the more RARER rpg games and it never top 200. ALSO do you really think someone would pay 400 bucks for VP when they can get it on the PSP. Also who will want to play PS1 games in 10 years from now. That is like saying , less all go back and play Atari 2600 games or even pong
over this pass year i dumped all my Very rare games (Panzer dragoon, Suk 2, VP all for around 150 each. I would rather have 450 bucks in my pocket now then to worry about a reprint/ price drop.

Some probably will but not by very much. I've noticed that some RPGs just spike in price every once in a while and then drop back down to normal. Or vice versa.

It's not like saying that at all. Atari blows, straight up. I still go back and play my NES, Genesis, SNES and such. Games have come a long way.

My guess is that most all decent PS1 RPG's will be going up in price (seems like they already are ever since GS/EB stopped taking them in). Of course if services like XBL Arcade and the PSP start offering these games as downloads then they could very well drop. If you are buying these as an "investment" my advice is don't. On the other hand if you just want to own them and want them before the price goes up, then I'd probably start grabbing them.
maybe keep Magna Carta and Lunar if you have all the bonus stuff. Stuff like Dragon Quest VIII or Final Fantasy X-2 will not go up significantly.

Yea, if I wanted to make an investment, I'd go to a broker. I'm not going to sit on games I bought for $50 and hope they go for $100, that's stupid.
Anyways, I think I'm going to start buying now. I don't want PS1 games I've been coveting for 2+ years to just dissapear or become ridiculously overpriced.

i think you should pick up valkyrie profile and suikoden II soon, i think those have the potential to become quite expensive as people who buy them on ebay won't ever sell them probably for several several years.

Keep in mind that alot of people look for rare games because they are collectors, not because they actually want to play the game.

Potential to become quite expensive? They already go for $100+.

i mean in 2010 when the graphics are 5 to 10 times better then today. do you really think someone will plop down 200 bucks for VP and play something that outdated.
if that is true then Breath of fire 1 and earthbound for the snes should be worth 100 to 200 and Dragon warrior 4 should be worth 200 to 300
sady they are not. just like most of these games will not be .
And once the PS4 comes out it probally wont play PS1 games (does the ps3 play ps 1 games) Good luck finding a working pS1 system in the year 2015 : )

You're not considering collectors though... if there weren't collectors, then the price of VP would've taken a dive after the PSP version hit. And as far as I can see, the price of the original are just as high. There are probably more collectors today collecting stuff from the PS1 era than there are collectors to buy NES/SNES stuff. And even then, there are NES games that go for $150+.

I don't understand why you quoted me. I was saying how games from 15 years ago are still playable today, not that people will be willing to pay a bunch of money to play older games.
I was also saying (earlier in the thread) that most games will eventually be reprinted. Shoveling out a lot of money to play a rare PS1 game now is not a good idea.
Also, you do know that the year 2010 is less then 4 years from now...right? I don't think graphics will improve that much more in a 4 year time span. Look at PS2, launched in 2000, 6 years later PS3 launches, sure the graphics are better but is it as big as an improvement from PS1 to PS2? Graphics in the video game industry are slowing down, I also don't see Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo launching another system 4 years from now.
