View Full Version : Cowboys - Gaming in need of them more than Ninjas/Pirates/Military?

I've never been a huge fan of cowboy stuff, but have moderatly enjoyed movies in the past. Up until Red Dead Revolver and Gun I realized that cowboy games really work amazingly well for gaming.
In terms of shooters it works great since the types of weapons always are a bit more raw than your standard military game. Western games seem to have a better sense of adventure as well and it's alot more nostalgia filled than ninjas, pirates, or military based games.
http://www.tedtoy.com/NINJA.JPG I know tons of people really do enjoy their ninja games, but I'm getting really tired of all the flashy stuff. To me I prefer the raw honest to god bulkiness of a jabbering gore killer that is real cluncky in terms of fighting compared to an acrobatical high flying super powered ninja who looks fancy flying all over the place... there's just too damn much of this everywhere already (movies, games, cartoons, TV, music... jk on that one). Ninjas are just to much relying on visual substance than actual basic straight to the point action. but yes, ninjas are still awsome but I'm getting really tired of them.
http://research.amnh.org/users/leighty/pirate.jpg Pirates have a strong potential that still needs to be tapped into. I think some developer will find a good way to make them great again in gaming. Last time ever was monkey island, so here's hoping for another tim schafer to come along.
http://www.nmfa.org/images/content/pagebuilder/34745.jpg Military, well, I don't need to go into detail. Eeyone already knows there's just too many of these games.
so in the end, cowboys need to find their place and look like they are. Call of Juarez looks like a strong contender and Rockstar's unamed PS3 may be a goodie as well, but there still needs to be more. A Gun sequal would be great as well since it still has alot of potential.
in the end, it's really up to anyone who thinks what they like and don't like. I'm just pointing out a change that would be nice to see.
oh, and an obligitory unfair picture putting down one side of the story ;)

Once again I bring about a dragged out subject... but at least I'm applying it to gaming. What else is there anyway... janitors?

It's something different which is kinda nice... but after Red Dead Revolver and Gun, I'm not so sure that gaming needs cowboys.

 I want to point out those weren't the best there could be, but it was a start for a good possible idea. No cowboy game has hit the point perfectly yet, but most have presented some great ideas.
Well there is always Sunset Riders.

Sunset Riders was a damn good game... it's sad that they don't make 'em like that anymore, but that's easily the best cowboy game I've played.

I've certainly enjoyed Red Dead Revolver and Gun more than any ninja games, but pirates have the best games of those 4 categories (namely the Monkey Island series).
EDIT: On a side note, does anyone else think Rockstar's Unnamed PS3 Cowboy game could be a Red Dead Revolver sequel?

agreed, but in some ways they're the medevil version of priates I guess. Plus, on that note, Knights don't get much respect outside of fantasy based games.

I was talking about this with my 6 year-old nephew the other day.
Me: Who do you like better: Pirates or Ninjas?
Nephew: neither
Me: What? Oh you must be a Viking guy.
Nephew: nope
Me: Robots?
Nephew: they're too slow
Me: and Cowboys?
Nephew: Who wants to chase cows?
Me: Then who do you like?
Nephew: Skaters. They're cool.
Me: Guh.
It should be noted that he's a huge Tony Hawk game freak, but has very little exposure to real skateboarding.

There could be some potential in a game that puts this whole Ninjas Vs. Pirates Vs. Cowboys Vs. Vikings Vs. Samurai Vs. Chefs Vs. Vampires Vs. Robots debate to rest. I wouldn't mind seeng a completely overthetop deathmatch style game with every ridiculous class fighting for ultimate glory. The best comparison i can think of is Darkwatch (a cowboy game i might add) but times a million. In fact, I think that would make a pretty amazing Mod. Someone get on that
In fact, your missing quite a few games: just in the last year, there was Darkwatch and Shadow Hearts New World, and before that, Rising Zan. I would really prefer a "Space Cowboy" style game (best comparison=Cowboy Bebop, although I would prefer no flying parts). Upgrading your weapon could be cool, with it starting as a simple revolver, but by the end of the game giving you something completely unique, be it Chaingun, Duel Pistols, Shotgun, BFG, Gunblade...
I will agree with you on the ninja thing, although I could see pirate games getting a potential boost because of Pirates of the Carribean. There have been those games and Pirates!, which isn't supposed to be so bad. Personally, I can't wait: who doesn't love killing pirates? Too bad there arent any games where i can kill them with a katana though

By the way gunslinger is the correct term, cowboys are the guys who took cows from one place to another.

Sid Meier's Pirates blows the lid off any of those Cowboy games. I also like Pirates of The Carribean for the xbox (the first one, not the newest one), though i am probably in the minority on that one. Pirates The Legend of Black Kat i liked for the ship parts. Once you got on land it was ridiculous. Gun and Red Dead Revolver did absolutely nothing for me.
There was another cool looking Pirates game for the PC i saw on gamespot the other day. It is called Age of Pirates Caribbean Tales.

Well there's the sequel, Norse by Norsewest: The Lost Vikings II, Rune and it's expansion, Halls of Valhalla, an expansion for Medieval: Total War called The Viking Invasion, and of course every Madden game has Vikings in it. Lots of other games reference Norse mythology.

I am very, very shocked no one has mentioned an awesome game that has practically done this already. Time Killers! This game already has Vikings vs. Samurai vs. Aliens vs. Knights vs. Cavemen!

I dunno about you, I though Gun was boring, but I loved Red Dead Revolver. I just thought it went from easy to way-to-tough too quickly.
I would buy RDR 2 for sure.
Western movies and games are really an untapped potiental... what someone needs to do is grow the genre up out of spagetti westerns and make it more than just dusty, day shooting.
My biggest problems with Westerns is that everything looks old, even when it was new. The only movie that didnt do the lame-ass everything is old concept that I remember is "Maverick." But that really wasnt much of a Western.

The few Western/Cowboy games we have aren't that bad, but Red Dead and Gun both have that gritty, edge factor to them, and I don't think Western games will ever escape that style.
Ninja games don't even need a classifacation, it's just always been the rule that if the character has a sword, might as well call him a ninja. Only real ninja game is Tenchu, and even then that series isn't so hot.
Pirates will always be the best to me. Nothing more needs to be said then Secret of Monkey Island series and Pirates! Gold or the recent remake.
I have nothing really against any of these, just giving input. Still say Pirates win though.:)

Coming soon to the Xbox 360 and PS3, Weird Al Yankovic's: Amish Paradise. Churn butter and raise barns against up to 15 online opponents. Play as one of three selectable characters: Jebodiah the chicken feeder, Jacob master of the plow, or Ezekiel the cow-milker, or create your own character with 2 selectable beard styles and completely non-customizable outfits. Gameplay is done entirely with the left stick, as the Amish aren't allowed to use buttons.

hopefully, the ninja backstabs pirate by the end. If not, I guess I still can't complain. We are first in the title

The frontier world or the world of the Gun is a bright world with distance. Then there is many westerner like games like Killer 7 or Rockman Zero.
Then we have the issue with the Indians who we can't make fun off anymore and the crwod that comes with westerner themes.
A real Cowboy probably never heard of a NES or PSX in there entire lives.

I am surprised no one mentioned Call of Juarez.

I played the demo and it kicked ass. This game is a must buy for me.
The reason cowboys seem cooler than ninja or pirates is because cowboys are fresh. Ninjas have been done to hell and it is hard to make a proper pirate game.

How about a dungon crawler action RPG ala Baulders Gate or Xmen Legends, where you can choose to be a Ninja, Pirate, Cowboy or Viking with 4 player online co-op. Lots of leveling up and hopping around different time periods, it could be the best game of its type ever made
I've been wanting more old west games for years.

It did pretty much suck, but what kid is going to pass up a game that has limbs being cut off as the main gameplay mechanic. Plus if you smashed all the buttons at once at any time during the match you could cut their head off for an instant win.

Havent read the thread but I've read the title and it goes like this.
Cowboys are considered old, video games wanna be on the edge, so doing that with an old setting is not the best thing to do. Same thing with pirates, they aren't doing so hot either.

oddly, ninjas have been around way longer than cowboys, and pirates are the oldest... so in the end, cowboys are alot newer than the other two.

Thats an awesome idea, and add to that list some really bizzare stuff, like:
Jedi
Superhero
Gypsie (they're like land pirates!)
Robocop
Old Fashioned Robot (oh the potential dialoge "Love... does not compute...")
Wolfman
Bruce Campbell
Caveman
Gorilla with a shovel
Godzilla
Add the ability to pick a second profession halfway through the game, and think of the possibilities!
I really enjoyed Red Dead Revolver. I highly suggest it to anyone looking for a Spaghetti Western type game. It has one of my favorite soundtracks of any game from this generation.
I do think that it's an exciting genre that's virtually untapped. Frankly, I'm getting sick of all the WWII, humans vs. aliens/zombies, thug on thug action games that comprises 90% of the market.

The has a postal game ;), my friend would always tell me he would get depressed after playing the game and killing people lol.
In addition the movie adaption of Brokeback mountain would make a good game that im sure would go cheap quick.
I would like to see a cowboy game that let you become a lawman, or an outlaw, or a vigilante. Which could also work in a multiplayer game. Where guys could try to prevent a train from being robbed.
