The five year anniversary is upon us. And it seems that everyone has a story to tell when it comes to this topic. I guess it's the "where were you when you heard about JFK" of our day. Please share where you were and/or what you were doing when you first found out about the events of 9/11 taking place.
I was in college at the time. I recall waking up hungover at about 11:30 or so. I walked down stairs and headed outside and remember noticing what an absolutely perfect day it was. It was sunny, warm, and the sky was a deep blue. And it was abnormally tranquil for the apartment complex I lived in. After standing around for a few minutes I headed back inside and turned on CNN. And thats when I saw it. I couldnt believe what was going on. I literally thought it was either a prank or some kind of weird advertising ploy for a movie. That is until I changed the channel and realized that coverage of the incident was on every channel .. not just the news and local channels. Every channel. When I saw the first videos of the planes flying into the buildings I was flabbergasted. I just didnt know what to think. My brain couldnt process that this was all real. It was one of the most surreal moments of my life. And one that I'll unfortunately never forget.

You know, I realize that this will generate torrents upon torrents upon torrents of "you are fucking unpatriotic" shit, and I realize that several CAGs will attempt to set fire to my house but, When I saw it on TV, I just shook it off. It didn't impact me that much.
Just one insignificant man's opinion.

I was in 10th grade, sitting in Geometry class and talking about the Monday Night Football game the night before, how the Broncos destroyed the Giants (who were fresh off of a Super Bowl appearance), when a teacher came in and told my Geometry teacher to turn on the TV. Saw it, didn't know what to think (this was before the second plane hit). I got checked out of school (very rare) during my Spanish class and watched everything with my dad.

forget about being unpatriotic...2 planes crashed and caused 2 towers to collapse in the middle of a major city...if that doesnt catch your attention then what does?
anyway, i was at work and somebody mentioned that a plane exploded over the city then i went to a tv in a waiting room and saw what was happening...i went away and when i came back the towers were gone and then i thought of my brother which is a city cop, he was there but it was right after the first tower collapsed

I was in my Junior year of High School. My first period class was AP History, and I remember that I walked to school that day. I had, and still do, have a habit of waking up early to catch the news at 5am. I saw it happen live, but didn't realize it's impact until later on in the day.
The funny thing is most kids didn't care, they just wanted to ditch school. A lot of people got pulled out of classes that day.

No I didnt as I rarely venture into the VS forum. And even if I did know about your thread it wouldnt matter. Yours is just about the five year anniversary and of 9/11 in general, while I'm asking what specifically people were doing when they first heard about the events taking place.

I was in school and our substitue teacher wouldn't let us watch it/let us know anything even happened. We switched classes and the other kids were talking about it and we were all like wtf? Then we get into the other teachers classroom and she tells us about it then we go on learning like nothing happened until the end of the day when everyone's talking about it. I am/was pissed that they didn't let us watch it on TV and let us know what was happening.

My plans that day was go to class, buy the Jay-Z's Blueprint Cd. I woke about 8 am, to lie in bed and watch Pokemon, then wash up. I see a tower on fire and think, "What the Fuck is this?" I get up and my mom fills me in. I sit around watching for 2 hours, until I leave for class. I stop by Best Buy and a Mom and Pop cd store. Best Buy was empty and the employees where glued to the TV. They also never got the album in. The Cd store had in on sale, and we discussed the tragedy for a 30 mins. Went to Art History 201, and it was depressing. We just talked about what we saw and then the school closed in the middle of class. I get home about 1:30 pm and my idiot friend is happy that got a paid day off and wanted to go to the movie. I put the dumbass in the right state of mind. The rest of the day, I just watched to news and talked to family.

It might have "impacted" you if somebody you loved was in one of the towers or planes. As for what I was doing when it came on the news, I was getting my son ready for school. I felt almost like I was in a daze for the rest of the day. the next thing I did was thank God that my family was not hurt and prayed for the families of those that were murdered.

I was in school and I was headed to gym class. My teacher stopped everyone and asked if anyone's parents worked in the Pentagon (I live about 10 miles from there). I was scared shitless. My mom and dad both worked a mile or so from there. I didn't really know what to think. My friend mentioned something sarcastically like "someone must've bombed the pentagon". later the principal announced on the loadspeaker a dumbed-down version of what happened. Like some planes crashed and no one really knows why. I think we got out of school early but I can't remember. I came home and watched the coverage on the news. thats really all i can remember.

I was still laying in bed but awake (and already late for class), roommate turned on the tv before he left. It took about 20 minutes before I decided to switch over to Sportscenter. Unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy that for long. I can't remember if I still got to enjoy Sports Night that morning or not. Probably not. Bastards.

But then we walked past a tv in the school and sure enough a plane had hit the world trade center.

It was my senior year, and I was sitting in my law education class, had to take some blowoff classes that year, when another teacher comes in and tells my teacher to turn on the tv. This was shortly after 8 (CT). And right as he turned on the tv, the 2nd plane hit the WTC and everyone was like WTF.
Every class that day we talked about the ramifications of the attack. Every class except for one, where the ignorant teacher was like so what you've heard about/watched this all day, its time to learn. Needless to say, this was one of the least like teachers in the school, even prior to that day.

I was asleep when it started-- I hadn't been to school in several days as I had been having anxiety attacks at school, and my mother was on my way to where I was staying to take me to the doctor to see about anti-anxiety medications. She called me to wake me up to tell me to get ready, but told me I should turn on the news. I stumbled out to the living room and watched it for a little while, half asleep and incredibly confused. We went to the doctors office when she arrived and when we went in everyone was talking about it, trying to figure out what was going on, since there wasn't really a tv in the office. A semi-paniced state as we live not so far from a big military base, so we didn't know whether we should be expecting planes flying into us, or being nuked, or god knows what. Calm panic and confusion.

I remember my mother comming and waking me up. Turned on the TV and was like WTF? I mean, it didn't shock me or anything, just a WTF moment. My best friend/room mate has told me that a female friend of ours burst into his room and pounced on him and was screaming shit about "a plane flew into a building, the world is ending, and all you can do is sleep!!!" He didn't know shit about until she woke him up. Then again, this girl can be an annoying bitch sometimes.
I remember that day at work it was kinda slow, though we still had people calling aout their damn VCRs and DVD players (was doing tech support for Panasonic at the time). They let us go about an hour and a half after I got there...

I had just started high school, and was in second period english. An announcement came over the loud speaker saying a plane had crashed into one of the towers. I just kept thinking wtf...after the second plane hit, they sent us home.
Someone back me up here, but I also remember Advance Wars being pushed back a day or two, because I was all pumped the night before september 11th to buy it.

The first plane hit during my first class on my first day at my new school (I'm a teacher). The principal came into my class, I was super nervous, and said that after class we were all to gather in the meeting room. We had just come from there, so I asked her, why aren't we continuing with the class schedule? She told me a plane had hit the WTC and we were gathering to inform the whole school.
I reentered my classroom. Students asked what had happened, and I told them that after class we were remeeting as a whole school. Someone asked why, and I told them that a plane had just hit the WTC. That student said "What does that have to do with us?" (We're about 75 miles north of NYC).
Another student (from NYC, we're a boarding school) said "Some of us are from NY, some of us know people near the WTC."
It was then, and only then, that it occurred to me that my dad worked there.
When class ended, I went to call my parents, but no phones worked. My brother (in Portland, OR) called the school and spoke with me.
I immediately went home and turned on the TV. ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX were all not working (signals sent from the WTC), so I watched it all on CNN. As soon as I turned on the TV, I saw the second plane hit what looked like my father's office (same side, hit about 25 floors above).
I spent the day fielding phone calls from all our relatives. Occaisonally I could get through to my mom who was forced into the basement of the UN. No one there knew what had happened, my mom only knew that it was something bad and that it seriously effected cell phone capacity. I explained to her everything I saw, as I was seeing it. We all thought my dad was dead (my sister, brother, grandmother, aunts, everyone).
I watched the news for hours and coordinated communication with all our relatives. We watched the towers fall, we saw all the replays of the planes hit, we watched the people jump from the buildings...The whole time, we feared for the worse. About 4 hours later, my dad called. They began evacuating when the first tower was hit and he was on about the 20th floor in the stairwell when his was hit (he worked on the 46th). He then had to walk home, the whole way with no public transportation, cell phone reception, or working cell phones.
I'll never forget that day, nor do I have any desire to see the new Oliver Stone movie.

Yeah but at least this one was formatted correctly instead of runon sentence:lol:
Back on topic, I remember is quite vividly. I was getting ready for work (worked 11-7) so as part of my routine, I see how the stocks on doing on Bloomberg TV to give a sense of how hectic my day would be (I did support for a financial firm). Well all I see is a building in flames that I couldn't quite make out until they panned out and then it hit me. More appropriatly, a plane hit the 2nd tower hit me. My jaw agape and on the verge of tears, I was horrified at what just happened.
This wasn't the same level as the Oklahoma City bombing. This was diliberate, calculated, and perpitrated by someone from another land. An outright act of war. A pit in my stomach formed as I thought about the ramifications this may have on out liberties we have taken for granted. People watching other people with distrust and second guessing thier character just based on thier appearance.
Didn't recieve a call from work to stay home and so I proceeded to make my way down. Traffic was eerily sparse. Got to work and they pretty much seny me back home. Appreantly the phone system was jammed from everyone calling loved ones. I hung around for a little bit to talk over with my co-workers of what happened earlier over a smoke.
On my way home, I stopped by the mall to inform my friend of what happened at his gamestop store. He already heard the story so I wished him well and continued home. On the way to my car, these two punks were all pissed off the mall was closing early (it was right next to an airport). I just lost it and cursed them out. I said "Do you fucking realize that your way of life will be forever changed after this day? How heartless can you fucking be?".
Got home finally and tried to keep my mind off of things. Read a book. Walked outside. Anything but watching TV.
Work the next day was utter chaos. A lot of our clients were setup in the World Trade so alot of customers are now just sudden memories:cry:

The first plane hit just as I was eating my breakfast. My parents were a little scared of sending me to school that day. Half of my class didn't even show up (this was back in elementary school). We were all shaken, and nobody knew what to do. We didn't even play Pokemon at recess. Our teacher called the whole day of learning off and we just took it as a sort of memorial service.

Well I live in Temple Hills, MD, which is right outside DC and not too far from the Pentagon. I had woken up and everything seemed normal when all of a sudden my cousin=in-law called me and told me that a plance had crashed into one of the towers. I'm thinking to myself that it must have been one of those small one-engine private planes (my cousin's call was sketchy at best). All of a sudden I felt the ground shake a little and thought "WTF was that?". I turned on the TV and found out that a a very LARGE plane had flown into the tower, and a few moments ago a plane had flown nto the Pentagon, which caused he shutter I felt. I turned on CNN and watched the towers burning, and I saw it live when they both collapsed. I felt sick for the rest of the day, mostly from knowing that a national tragedy had occured mere miles from my home.

I heard something about a plane crashing in to the World Trade Center on my way to school. Me and my mom were very confused. Nobody mentioned it in first period, but my second period class was Philosophy. We watched the whole thing live. Two girls were giggling in the back and everyone told them to shut the fuck up.

...online, of course.
Was on a board I've frequented for about 8 years...it's usually a really sarcastic board with some of the funniest people I know. The newest post was titled "Wow" and when I looked at the post, it just said "seeing those planes crash into the World Trade Center was the most fucked up thing I've ever seen in my life." This was back when I was on AOL...after reading that I looked at the welcome screen (which I had learned to tune out by that point) and read about it.
One of the people I'm cordial with on that board is a writer for MAD, which is obviously based out of New York. I fired him off an email just saying something like "Where you at? We're sweatin' bullets here!" or something. In his usual fashion, he let us all stew in it for a while before replied to me about 12 hours later - "Help! I'm trapped under tower 2. Please send water, oxygen, and pornography."
What pissed me off from a personal perspective - I was in broadcasting school at the time. They called everyone and said that class was cancelled for the day. I certainly understand why it was cancelled, but it still annoyed me. What better possible scenario could there be for someone trying to learn about news broadcasting?

I was in sixth grade when it happened. The teachers did a really good job of keeping it a secret because I didn't even find out about it until that night. The teachers weren't allowed to tell us because they wanted us to go home and discuss it with our family's. I remember walking to the bathroom at around 9:00 o'clock and seeing a bunch of teachers crowded around a TV in the office with a distressed look on their faces.
When I was walking from my bus stop, the kid next door was like "GO WATCH THE NEWS!" When I got home I turned on the news and I saw a headline that said "America under attack!" and there was just some guy talking on the screen. I had no idea what was going on and I was bored.
So I watched Catdog.

Junior year of HS and we were standing in the hallway wait for the teacher to show up. When he got there he opened the door and turned on the TV, he went on to say this may be the worst tragedy to hit America.
We saw the first tower smoking and most of us were confused on what was really happening then the 2nd tower was hit and everyone was just speachless.
Finally someone turned to the teacher and asked if there were people inside.
It was a pretty messed up day after that. I think a lot of the students ended up cutting school because our school is only about 20 minutes from Midway airport.

I was in 8th grade going towards my Science class when a friend of my ran up and told me something about planes going into buildings, I thought he was just kidding at first. Then I got to class, saw what was on the tv and I realized it wasn't all a joke. It didn't really affect me all too much though, at least I got a day free from classwork.

It was my senior year of high school. I had overslept that day and was missing one of my classes.
I woke up when I heard my roommate screaming "Oh Sh*t! We're going to war! We are going to fuck-ing war!" So obviously I went to go see what he was going on about. All he told me was a plane crashed into one of the WTC towers and we're going to war. I wasn't sure it was a terrorist attack, I thought it was a small plane, which could have had some kind of malfunction.
Then that very second the other plane crashed and there was absolutely no doubt any more that it was a terrorist act. I still remember on the news they listed off the possible terrorist cells being Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Iraq or Iran.
Then I had to go to school or else I wouldn't have been able to play in the football game that week. Most people didn't even know about it when I got in. There were just these odd whispers and rumors.

I woke up to get ready for work at CC, and saw it happening on the news. I almost could not believe it was real and flipped the channels, to see if it was true. When I got to work we set all the TV's to the news. My boss let me call home (I was and still am in W TX) but my dad works right on the mall in DC, to see if he was ok, and of course I was not able to hear from him till late that night because cell phone lines were tied up. We sat there and watched it from opening till well past closing, and the only thing we sold were portable tv's so people could keep track of the events at work.

I had worked until 5:00am on the morning of September 11th. I woke up shortly after the second tower fell. As I was getting ready, I could hear that my mom was listening to MSNBC. I knew something was wrong because my mom hates cable news and generally doesn't watch it. My first thought was that something had happened to Dick Cheney (He'd been in the news around that time because of his heart).
When I came downstairs, I didn't say good morning, instead I immediately asked what was wrong. The first thing she said was, "Well, we're at war." And I thought, "What? Who did we tick off so well in the five hours since I went to bed to actually start a war?" And then she told me what had happened. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It sounded like a bad movie plot. She told me that the World Trade Center was gone and I asked her, "What do you mean, it's gone? It can't be gone..." and then they showed the video of the plane hitting one of the buildings, followed by the building's collapse. I felt like someone had knocked the wind out of me. I couldn't cry. I didn't cry until days afterward.
An online friend called me after he'd heard a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. He thought I was closer to where Flight 93 came down than I actually was and he was worried. I spent three hours talking to him, as I sat on the kitchen floor and stared at my fish tank in the next room.
After I hung up from talking to my friend, my mom and I went to the grocery store. We were surprised at how little traffic there was, and that there weren't more people at the store. There were a few people gathered around a television near the customer service desk. I stood there for a few minutes and watched the news coverage. An older man, about my mother's age, turned to go but stopped when he saw me. "This is your generation's JFK. You'll never forget this." And I knew that he was right.
I remember standing in line behind a young mother with her daughter. I asked how old she was and her mother said, "Six months, today." And all I could think was that nothing would ever be the same, and that this little girl would have no memory of any of it. I wondered what her mother would tell her when she got older, and if she'd ever have any idea what life had been like on the day before she turned six months old.

I was asleep also, it was my first year of college. I remember getting up and looking on my computer for news on Yahoo. When I saw the news, in bold capital letters it stated that the two towers were hit and both collasped. I thought that some idiot hackers got into the system and was just messing with people. So I didn't think of anything of it.
I then walked down my hall to go take a piss, and as I was walking down I saw that everyone was watching CNN and of course they were showing the footage. Still didn't think anything of it when I took a piss (I was still waking up). It didn't hit me until I was walking back that I put two and two together. I almost ran back to my room and turned the TV on, waking my roommate up. With him pissed off, I told them that the WTC was hit, and he couldn't believe it. We both just sat there in stunned, with tears in our eyes.

I was in the eight grade. I remember it being sunny outside when I woke up. Walked into my kitchen, half-asleep, grabbed some Cocoa Puffs when my younger brother says "YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS!". He puts it on the living room's big screen, just so....weirded out thinking "wow this really sucks...". A few minutes later we see the second plane hit. Fuckkkkk. We didn't really know the full extent of the damage until after school.

I was in 10th grade psychology class. My teach was giving a lecture, and another teacher came in and told him something. He looked shook up. My teach was born and raised in NY and RI where his family still was. He summed up his lecture and then told us and turned the tv on. The first tower was hit and we were watching CNN. Then we saw the 2nd plane hit the tower. It was crazy just like most people I didn't know what to think and terrorism never really crossed my mind.
I remember later in the day when switching class a teacher was telling another teach that the towers were falling. I stepped in her room and watched it. That day in school no one did any work. It was go to a class for 45 mins and then move to next class to watch whats going on. I got home and my cousin was 2 months out of basic. He called me and told me he would probably be going overseas. 3 months later he was. He came home wounded but just fine.

I was asleep when my wife called (she works in DC, but was actually out of town on business). She said, "Turn on the tv!" I asked, "What channel?" "It doesn't matter." I can't remember if I saw the 2nd plane hit, but I definitely remember watching the towers falling. The day is kind of a blur, mostly watching tv and waiting for my wife to finally get home, which took several extra days.

I was in 10th grade in my early Brit Lit class. One of the kids came in and said there is something going on in New York so we turned on CNN. We watched the second plane crash live and didn't realize what had happened right then. Basically we were like what the heck is going on. Teacher started class and we went on. At lunch rumours were running wild, but the idiotic school had decided to tell teachers no TVs or radios were to be turned on. So I knew nothing factual about what had happened until I got home at 2:45PM and turned it on. I was really annoyed too, b/c my brother was living in New York at the time. He lived across the Brooklyn Bridge, but I was still somewhat worried. He was just fine though like I expected.
To this day I stil think that was one the dumbest things a school, and especially my school had ever done. 4000 students at the school and you lock down all information about what is occuring with the most significant event in American history since the Vietnam War. I'm sure that is going to cause less worry and panic then actually letting us watch what is going on and informing us of current events that could affect our lives in the future. Dang, I guess I am still mad about that.

Snoring in my bed, my dad calls the house and screams in my ear WAKE THE FUCK UP the white house is on fire! A plane smacked into the Pentagon! ( At the time misinformation was flying all over the place, white house was supposidly hit too) Since my mom worked in Washington he wanted me up in case she needed something. Thinking back it was probably the funniest way i've ever been woken up. I did catch the second plane hitting the tower live and like others the full impact of what i had seen didn't really hit until later on in the day.

I actually hear it on the radio when I was getting ready for school right when it was happening.
(I live in CA, so I was listening around 5:30 am) the dj was like "OMG...OMG a plane just hit the tower! A fucking plane just hit the world trade center! I can't believe this is happening....WHAT?! another plane just crashed into the 2nd building!!" and so on and so forth.
When I went to school I was keeping a constant eye on the sky.

I was in division and a HS freshman, and an announcement came on saying that two missles hit the WTC. This was at 9:15 so they didn't know it was airplanes yet.

I also remember that when my work let everyone go early, I was gonna go to Best Buy and pick up the new Slayer CD God Hates Us All (ironic it came out on the same day, no?). But they were closed....

It was during my Sophomore year of high school. I was eating breakfast and watching the news like I do every morning when breaking news came on saying that one of the towers had been hit. They then started showing a live feed and the other tower was hit; the anchor/reporter didn't even know that the second tower had been hit and reported that the image seemed to be a replay of what just happened, despite the smoke coming out of the other tower. After about 5 minutes, they were informed that another plane had hit the second tower. I remember people making rumors about planes heading for Seattle and how some people were scared that our high school's tower (looked like a cathedral, lol) would be mistaken as the capitol or something. Then I remember a couple of girls who stayed in the locker room (which used to be a bomb shelter...no windows, all concrete, completely underground) in case something happened.

I left my TV on overnight, and forgot to turn it off as well as my lights. I woke up the next morning to the news coverage. At first I thought it was a dream, but then realized it wasn't.

Yep, it certainly did. I believe there were other coincidences of wired things that got released that same day...

I was living in Des Moines, Iowa at the time. I was lucky enough to get a day off on the same day as my wife so we slept in and really enjoyed it. Breakfast in bed the whole nine. We were both showering when the first plane hit and I turned on the TV about five minutes before the second plane hit. Damn near floored me. My wife thought I was joking until she came in to see the footage. Our asses stayed glued to the TV for more info because a good friend of ours was flying that day from Honolulu to San Fran. It's like we finally knew what Pearl Harbor really felt like because we had our own version. I've been in NY for two and a half years and I've yet to make the 30 minute trip to Ground Zero.
I was getting ready for my day with the TV on (Today Show IIRC) when they broke in with the breaking report that a plane of some sort had hit the WTC. In the beginning they thought it was probably a small plane and most were thinking it was probably/possibly an accidental crash. Then I saw the 2nd plane hit live.
I absolutely remember being terrified that buildings around me might be targeted, even though that really didn't make much sense.

I was working less than half a mile away on Wall St. We had to wait for the debris clouds to roll past our buildings before we could leave, and then evacuate over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Not a fun day.

Let's see, I was on the bus on my way to school (still in college, I commuted because school was about 45-60 minutes of a drive) listening to the radio when I heard about it. Got to school and had my classes, I don't remember a whole lot about the first couple. The last class was a History of TV and Radio class so we watched the footage. We were let out of the class early, so I got on the bus and headed back. I picked up Advance Wars that day (I wouldn't have bothered, but the Park and Ride was right next to a mall which was closed and a Toys R Us which was not closed but was essentially a ghost town) Came home, was told I should fill up on gas because prices were about to skyrocket. I did so, there were huge lines of people waiting to get gas. Then I went to work where I wandered aroud in a daze most of the day

I also remember ironicly enough, that they say before Sept 10th, me and my current boyfriend went up to Norfolk International and sat and just watch the planes land and take off as they has a spot just for that at the time

This makes me feel a little too old to be here. I was a Junior in College. I was actually running a volunteer fair for my college. Got up real early, and had to go organize the day. I didn't know what was happening until someone came into the fair saying a plane had hit a building in New York. We found a TV, and watched some news. But basically I had to keep running the fair. No one really showed up, but there was still a lot of work to do to clean up everything after the fair. Very confusing day.
A friend of mine (aspiring photographer) went to Downtown Detroit to take pictures. No one was in the streets, and it looked like a ghost town. Of course he got stopped by some cops. They thought he might be a terrorist, so they took his camera and film. Eventually they let him go, but they never gave him back his film.

I believe I was at work at the time....I might have been listening to STERN at work, since I was in the shop programming a machine at the time. They gave us the day off after that....which was a bittersweet bonus.

I just remembered that I was actually in my "Internet" class in high school and randomly went to nytimes.com and saw what happened. I couldn't believe it and neither could anyone else around me. Then the whole worrying about my dad thing happened.

I was a junior in college. I stumbled out of bed around 11am that morning, which I guess was shortly after the towers had collapsed... it was a Tuesday or Thursday, if I'm not mistaken, so I didn't have class till 1:15. I bumped my mouse to wake up my computer, and I just see dozens of IMs from a couple friends that didn't make any sense. All I got out of it was to turn the TV on, which I did. And didn't know what to think.
Raced out of my bedroom to the living room, but of course all my roommates were gone. Turned on the big TV and a few minutes later one of my roommates and another friend got back; we were all just speechless. Didn't turn off the TV for a couple weeks, and saved just about all the NY Times, since our dorm was getting them for free at that time.
Luckily classes were officially cancelled before we had to make the trek to the quad.

i was at home in maryland about 20 miles from the pentagon I was clueless tell my other in law called me and told me to turn on the tv. I was pretty upset of course and as it comes to turn out the last plane that went down in pennsylvania.... well there were a list of five places or targets that the plane was most likely headed for.... of course number one was the white house, but my husband was working in one of the other four buildings.... that made it worse, much worse.

I was working in the college bookstore. My sister was also working at the college in the library. She called to tell me about a plane crashing into the WTC. At first I thought it was just a horrible accident. Then, more people would come into the store saying that another plane hit and then I heard about the Pentagon plane. The UPS man came into the store and heard over the radio that jets were being scrambled. I honestly don't remember how I was able to concentrate during the day. I watched as much TV coverage as I could during my lunch break. I have family in Washington DC and I was very concerned. After I got home I was fixated on news reports from after I got off work until 3 am that night.
The year before I remember being at work when the USS Cole was bombed also. I remember a lot of us gathered to watch the TV in the hall that day. I would have never figured they were linked until the news stations started putting everything together.

I was studying abroad in Cairo, Egypt that semester and had only gotten there 2 and a half weeks earlier. Was walking through the cafe and I saw it on TV. Thought it was a joke and didnt realize it was real until the 2nd plane hit. Totally surreal experience.

The night before I'd spent in the ER with my son, because he was an infant and had fallen off the bed, hitting his head. We'd been there until 2am for x-rays, and we had an early appt to follow up at his ped.
I was watching the news as the newscaster was speaking, and all of a sudden the camera guy just shouted "OMG! It fell! The tower just fell!" The one news anchor had just come from the East and looked as if she was going to vomit.
At the ped's office, a man from Ireland was there with his kids. His parents were flying in from Ireland, and he couldn't get them because all phones were down.
My husband worked nights, and I got through on the cell and told him to watch tv, it was Armaggeddon out here. It was just the most surreal thing, watching the people jumping from buildings and down below. It tore at my soul.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but in my defense, when I saw footage of the first plane hitting, the newscasters didn't know what was going on yet. I was sittting on the foot of the bed brushing my teeth and I remember yelling at my boyfriend and saying, "Hey, hon, some idiot crashed into the World Trade Center in NYC!"
I left shortly after seeing that expecting to catch the full story on the nightly news, but in the car, the story was being repeated on every radio station. And now they were saying that it was most likely an intentional act.
I got to class and everyone was gathered around the door watching a handheld TV. Our professor came in. By this time the first building had crumbled. When the second building went down, my professor sobbed. Then she asked us to turn off the TV and sit down.
She sat there for a while before asking us if we wanted to have class. Really, none of us could think of anything else to do. I think it was something we needed to do. So we had class, and it was about the Peloponnesian War, Pericles, and the plague of Athens. Since it was Theatre History, we focused on the social aspects of the times and how people who had considered themselves the constant victors saw their society and world crumbling before them. I think it's the one lecture from college that I remember clearly.

I was a 3rd year medical student on a rotation on the inpatient psychiatry ward. We were rounding on the patients when we heard this huge commotion in the common room where we all arrived just in time to see the second plane hit. One of the patients (who of all things, was admitted the night before due to thinking she was a prophet from God and claiming that the end of the world was near) went completely manic and required four of us to restrain her and put her under sedation.
