Wii: Twilight Princess gets a new control scheme --- Aug 21st 5:59 am CDT
posted by AndrewBerquist
In an interview with Japan's monthly periodical Nintendo Dream, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be utilizing a different controller scheme, rather than the one that was shown at E3 this past May.
The game will now allow players to slash with the Wiimote, rather than using the previously used B button for slashing actions. This will allow the next installment of the Zelda series to be more interactive for Wii players. The other change made was that to the bow and arrow control scheme. At E3 users aimed the bow with the Wiimote, then shot the arrows using the D-Pad. Most players, including our own Justin O'Leary, complained of this action being a bit difficult. Now users can aim with the Wiimote, and fire with the now free B button.
Keep checking back at DSRevolution for the latest Twilight Princess updates!

This seemed like the logical setup from the outset. I guess they took all the reactions from E3 to heart. I may jump on board now with the Wii version of TP.

Well, I expected this when I first heard that TP was delayed for a year. Then when E3 came and it wasn't iplemented I was somewhat surprised since the game BEGGED to be used in this manner.
Glad to see this though, I think it will make the Wii version much more "enhanced", helping sell the reason to buy the console.

Curious how they decide to implement it. I can't imagine them trying to mimic what Red Steel has moved towards, that being sword movements mapped to directly to the controller; don't think that would work so well in a Zelda game. Not to mention you can't exactly do spin moves with a downward thrust with the Wiimote.

Sword and Shield via Wii controller.

Conceptually, that would be sweet. The reality of it is that anyone seen using this setup is preparing themselves for getting their ass kicked ... by their sister.

As someone who buys practically every gimmick sword/chainsaw/macracas/bongos/drum/guitar controller on the market, I would allow my fictional 12 year old sister to kick me in the nuts for being so lame to geek out over a Zelda sword/shield controller. The possibilities for gimmick/custom controllers seem limitless. Who wouldn't geek out over something like Squenix putting out a limited edition "Wii"blade with the nunchuck being a Mickey key chain if they port Kingdom Hearts over.

I just meant the normal controller...no weird mock-up add-on.

They should allow players to choose which control style they'd like to use. I know that it won't take much movement to swing the sword but I'm just nervous as to how well it will work.
However, I am looking forward to it.

I really hope they find a good way to implement this. Sure this seems like the logical step but I'm guessing my arms might get tried if I have to do drastic swinging to get Link to swing my sword.

If they're smart, they'll allow wrist flicks to trigger the sword moves, with full swings being possible if the player wants to
Anyway, I'm happy with this news.. I was disappointed with the b-button sword usage announcement, and I'm pleased with the movement of the bow and arrow controls to the b trigger

On a semi-related note, Shane from EGM talked about using the final version of the Wiimote at a Sega event (to play Super Monkey Ball). He mentioned that the final version of the Wiimote felt more substantial (apparently the E3 version was a little light) and controlled much better than the E3 version. He also mentioned that the sensor bar was smaller than the E3 version as well.
One last thing, he said that the controllers they were using were black (like the Wiimotes used at the THQ event). So it looks like the Wii will definitely launch in two colors at least.

Good to know because otherwise the Will version would be pointless.

Red Steel didn't have 1-to-1 sword movements at E3. All preset animations.

Correct, but since then they have redone the control, to aim to have sword movements mimic yours as best they can.

For the person who posted the Zelda pic now if only Square or someone else created a Bushido Blade looking sword attachment. I'd LOVE to get some one on one hack and slash fighting action and NO Zelda doesn't count because there would be VERY few of it, think of Zelda like Tsugaru by Namco and Blade Of Honor by Sega hence I want to see a one on one implementation.

Man.
Nintendo is seriously going to have to install a sensor on the Wiimote that tells whether or not you've strapped it to your dick or not, cuz that's going to be the most satisfying way to play all of these games.
"Sir, please do not strap the Wii controller to your dick, that is not its intended use."
If they got Charles Martinett to say it, that would make it about a million times more amusing.
I mean, I just can't get over it. I'm going to take down enemies and hit tennis balls and do God-knows-what in Warioware, all from the comfort of my pants.
Or. Not my pants.
You know what I mean. Stfu.

I'd forgotten I'd written that.
I want to add that hitting the Z button on the Wiimote is going to be a feat in and of itself. You know those toys you see in executive offices with the five metal balls hitting each other?
That's how it'll happen. It even includes the five balls. Which is a bit...odd, I know. But what can I say?
I'll make a wild hip thrust and you'll hear a wah-tsh!
I'll call it the Indiana Bones move.
And then that damn voice is going to chime in...
"Sir, please do not strap the Wii controller to your dick, that is not its intended use. .... Itsa-ma, Maaaario!"
I think doing that alone could provide me with hours of entertainment.
