View Full Version : Gameboy Advance e-Reader Bundle for $39.99

I recently picked up a copy of the Gamestop catalog for February 4- Feb. 24 (available in-store; it has Samus on the cover), and I noticed that they have the Game Boy Advance e-Reader Bundle for $39.99. The bundle includes a GBA system and an e-Reader (and the cards that come with the e-Reader). It's like buying an e-Reader and getting a GBA for free. This is a great deal for anyone looking for a cheap GBA for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. My local Wal-Mart even price-matched the bundle for me when I brought the Gamestop ad in. Here's a couple scans of the ad page with the deal (it's at the bottom of the image)

I dont know how this works, but thats an insanely good price. I will grab a catalog when I pick up my FF Crystal Chronicles at Gamestop tomorrow.
thanks for the tip, and even if Gamestop made a mistake, the people at Walmart wont know better and ought to pricematch it in case.

It is a mistake and gamestop will not honor that price. But if you trick another store into honoring that price, go for broke!!

Ya know, a Gamestop ad is not that big so as to miss such a glaring mistake before this went to press. I smell foul play!

Will the Gamestops still have these ads? So if I were to stop by at Gamestop tomorrow, would I still be able to get one?

Also, will CC or BB carry these bundles?

Holy shit that's a good deal...unfortunately I can't see the ad as the page it's on has too much traffic :(.

Btw, are you the Liontamer that posts reviews on www.vgmix.com and sometimes on www.ocremix.org?

WeaponX2099

They didn't miss it. The day they put out the Ad, they sent out a memo saying don't honor that and 19.99 wireless thingee.

They should have them at The stores.

Liontamer
02-10-2004, 01:50 AM
They still had stacks of ads on the counter at the Gamestop stores that I've been to recently, so there still should be ads in-store. I had no problem price-matching at Wal-Mart, but I guess YMMV. The Wal-Marts near me all had either one or none of the bundles; Best Buy near me had several bundles in both Indigo and Glacier colors; Circuit City near me didn't appear to have any of the bundles. As for the person who asked if I post reviews somewhere, that isn't me as I don't post any reviews online.

I picked up the ad today and I tried CC....the lady got all defensive right away...I've never heard of Gamestop and she seemed mad about it. So then she checked called the local one and they were OOS. She said the item has to be in stock for them to honor a price match. She was a lot nicer though when she realized there really was a Gamestop. Does anyone know if BB has the same policy? Battousai1002 did yours go real smooth?

Well technically Gamestop shouldnt sell it for that price, the one near me has big signs saying $69.99. But the catalog has it as $39.99 so I got that pricematched at Bestbuy.
Bestbuy technically gives 10% of the difference also, but considering I felt I was kinda not doing the best thing already, I didnt ask for it. That would mean your GBA bundle would be $36.99.
The 10% off coupon doesnt apply to video game hardware unfortunately.

i tried to get a price match at wal-mart and the manager was saying that they cant do it becuz gamestop sells refurbished ones and i was like it would say refurbished if it was and hes like no we cant do it.he also said think about it if it wasnt refurbished would they sell it for almost 1/2 off the original price.what a bitch now i gotta go to another wal mart and hope they have the bundle

Quick question for those who have taken part in this (I just took the ad and PM'd at a Best Buy)

Inside the bundle box I can see that the GBA is apparently in it's own box, no different than any other GBA. Is the E-reader in it's own self-contained packaging as well?

If I can return both individually for store credit somewhere... that'd cover the price of a GBA-SP right there.

Dang, I just got so close to getting this.

Went to best buy, picked it up asked them to price match. They said sure, we just have to verify that it is in stock. They called and it was in stock....but at the last second they also verified the price....shot down. The guy already had the new price plugged into the computer, but had to change it.

Im not pissed at BB like some people would be, just annoyed that I got so close and failed.

"Highly?" Maybe... but much more so than asking for rainchecks for games you have no interest in? Buying clearance games from one store and trading them in to another as part of some "trade 4 get 1 free!" deal?

Easy to see I'm new here... my apologies if I've crossed the line.

No, some people think its ok to abuse the Target deal, yet call that bad. Some people think using the GGC is bad, while downloading roms is alright.

So, no, your not out of place, more or less dead center :)

Returning to store A an item which one purchased at store B, as if it had been purchased at store A in the first place is unethical.

Trading games in at store X that were purchased at store Y, is not unethical, at least not with regards to store X (some people argue that it is unethical because it robs other gamers of the opportunity to buy the game at the very cheap price, but that is another issue).

Store X is in the business of buying/trading used games, store A is not. Store A takes the game and gives credit based on the assumption that the game was purchased at store A, and the receipt was lost. Their policy of not requiring a receipt should not be confused with an attitude that they willingly "take back" items, regardless of the store at which they were purchased.

The Target deal is questionable, I can see both sides of it, but I did it, and I am not ashamed. Yes, one could argue that if one has no intention of buying an item, it is unethical to obtain a raincheck for that item. A raincheck, however, is not a commitment to buy, nor is it even an indication of a desire to buy, it is merely a certificate granting the ability to buy, and while it traditionally applies only to a certain item, Target's rainchecks grant an additional ability. It is their policy, it is, perhaps, overly generous, and it will probably change at some point in the not too distant future.

I'm not familiar with the arguments against the GGC coupon.

I did get a price match, so I scored one for $40 too. Now don't hate me, but when I found out both the GBA and the ereader were sealed inside I returned them to the same store and got $99 credit. Bam, GameBoy SP for $45 (tax). Maybe it's not right, but I just had to.

After Best Buy had none in stock to PM, I went ahead and gave GameStop a try. I showed the guy the ad, he said, "Wow, if that's what is says, than that's how much it is". He had to override the price in his system, but I got it for the $40.00. He was a nice guy, too.

The same thing happened to me when I tried to PM at BB. At the register the woman asked her co-worker if the store "GameStop" even existed. Then she even had the nerve to say that I made up the ad (as if I had some sort of plan to make an elaborate ad to fool their store). She then promptly got the manager and he told me that they would not match the price because "it was below cost." Yet he quoted 2 different prices as to what "cost for BB" was.

First he said selling it at the price in the flyer would be equal to no profit. But then he later said that their selling price was equal to no profit. So basically he lied to me.

I'm going to try again at WalMart and some other BB's near me. Hopefully it works out in the end. I suggest trying many different registers and hopefully one of the mindless peons will just punch it through.

Yeah, I opened up my bundle pack and found the same thing. Both devices are in their original seperate packaging, like they just took them out of a warehouse and stuck them in the bundle box. But I did notice both the GBA and E-reader had a sticker over the UPC code that marked it as sold with a bundle. The stickers are quite easy to remove. Voila! Your $39.99 purchase just became $109.98.

I took advantage of this great deal, but it did take me a while to find a place that had the E-Reader bundle and that also pricematches. Finally found a Walmart that had a bunch of em, and I got two (one for myself and a friend). I would really like to upgrade to an SP, but what would be the best way to go about doing this? EB Games or Gamestop? I considered what someone had done, with taking the two packages out of the bundle and returning them separately, but Best Buy and Circuit City wouldn't take them without a receipt, since it has been more than a month since Christmas. I believe this is a policy that all stores probably have, so I don't know how people are returning them by themsleves.

Anyways, I think EB Games has a trade in deal for a used GBA SP for $29.99, but I don't have 2 games to trade in with the GB Advance. I might be able to find a couple cheap used games, and go with the trade in tomorrow.

Tell the store that youre returning it to that it was a present and the person who gave it you didn't give you a gift reciept. You should be able to find a store that would do it for you. You wont get cash back but most places should give you a merchandise credit.

My first post here - Lion, you rock. :D

I went to about 6 stores over 2 hours. I found nothing. Most were sold out, or never had them. I went to best buy finally. They say to go to customer service, and nothing seems wrong. So, I wait, and they need to have it in stock. Argh. So close.

So, today, I tried my final store. I went to a gamestop 20 min away, that I had already called, and they had 2 in stock. On the phone they said it was a misprint, but I went anyway, since I knew. I get there and see the woman that I think told me it was a mistake on the phone. I go into the other guy's line, and explain it to him, showing him it. He asked the woman, and she said it was a misprint, but he seemed to think: "It says it, so I'll honor it". So, he's ringing it up, and this woman comes in. He tells her "Come here, look at this". So we show her, and she says "Whats the date on that?". I'm thinking "Uh-oh, I was SO close". She goes behind the counter, and says "we needed to get rid of em" :o :P

So, I finally got 2. Time for 4 player crystal chronicles. :D :D

Thanks a bunch, Lion.

Went to my neighborhood Gamestop to pre-order my Steele Battalion Re-release Bundle. While there I remember this thread and looked in the In-store flyer. Sure enough there it is, $39.99 for the e-Reader bundle. I look behind the guy ringing me up and there is one left. I ask if he'll sell it to me at the price shown, and he quoted the whole "mis-print" thing.

Not to be discouraged, I went 2 blocks down to a Wal-Mart and they priced matched the Ad on 2 bundles!

I then removed the items from both boxes, went into the Target next door and did a recieptless exchange and got..... wait for it.....

2 Rare Lime Green Target Exclusive Gameboy Advance SP's that came with DK Country Free! I remember these things were a special promo during the Thanksgiving shopping season.

I still can't believe my luck. They still have 2 more Lime Green SP's. I'm considering going back and doing it all over again for them. Those things are currently fetching up to $160 on Ebay.

Summary: 2x$39.99 for e-Reader Bundles= $79.98
2x$64.99 Glacier Gameboy Advances+ 2x$39.99 e-Readers
=$209.96 Credit
2x$99.99 Limited Edition Lime Green Gameboy Adv. SP
2x$0.00 ($29.99) Donkey Kong Country for Gameboy Adv.
=$199.98 Total - $209.96= $9.98 gift card
All together I spent $80 and came home with $260 in product
and a $10 gift card to boot! That more than paid for my time
and mileage!

Thanks lion for posting in the first place! Good luck to all who try to this out as well.

So the GBA and the E-Reader are wrapped seperately? Did it say anywhere on them that they were part of a bundle deal? I'll definetly be willing to do this if I can get a GBA SP for only for $40.

There is a small easily removable sticker that is placed over the UPC bar code. It says something like: "GBA e-Reader bundle 1 of 2" I peeled it off while in my car and it left no residue whatsoever. Goodluck!

I was thinking of doing it with that Nyko Wireless Extender instead. It's only $20, but goes for $100, so I can get a GBA SP for only $20.

where do u get a nyko wireless extender for 20$?and where would u return it for 100$? and how do u return the gba seperately to target if they have to scan the serial bar code thing that is on the gba? i tired to return a gba to wal-mart and they said i purchased it at target cuz they checked the bar code.

Hmmm....Not sure how everyone returns all these items. Tried it once at Walmart...they scanned the item and knew right away it wasn't from their store. I would suspect that Target would have the same type of computerized inventory. Anyone ever get turned down on this?

Well, you sort of have to make sure Walmart carries the item or not. If you want to be extra careful and make sure they do, you can look up the UPC number on half.com and then go to www.upcdatabase.com, print the UPC and take it to Walmart and have someone scan it (or scan it yourself if your Walmart has those self scanner things). If it scans then you can return it. There's no way they can tell it wasn't from bought from a Walmart, unless you leave the price tag on or something like that.

Hmmm....well the item I tried to return was a game. It was on their website so I assumed they carried it. I guess it is possible that they didn't carry it in that store. It was just that the lady told me if it beeps it means it isn't from this store. She was referring to the price scanner. This lead me to believe that they scanned everything when it came in so they could keep track of each item.

I then removed the items from both boxes, went into the Target next door and did a recieptless exchange and got..... wait for it.....

How smoothly does returning things at Target, sans receipt, go? I checked the return policy on their website and it said that you're not supposed to do it, but that they have some sort of receipt database they can search for you.

I returned them separately at Target, too, and had no problems. She did ask if I paid cash or credit, though, so maybe if it is a credit card they're able to search a database for you. You do have to select something from the same department, but that's wasn't a problem since I wanted to get my son a Gameboy SP.

I got the Nyko Wireless Net Extender for $20 price matched at Best Buy. I had to go through managers and everything, but they ended up giving it to me for that price at the end. I might keep it instead of returning it, since it looks like a pretty cool device and I got this ugly wire in my room that I wanna get rid of.

Wow, they actually let you have it for that price? That was a gutsy move.

Ya, I was very suprised that they did. I thought they were gonna call up Gamestop, find out it was a mistake and not let me have it, but they didn't.

Another place to look: CompUSA. I got two bundles there for 39.99 each. At first they tried to tell me that Gamestop wasn't a B&M store or it was some mail order thing or something, but a quick check of their website changed that. Good stuff, great deal.

Has anybody in California gotten a hold of the catalog? Unless they've been lying to me, the 3 Gamestops closest to me said they never got any.

Well, today's the last day we can try this...

I went to one Gamestop last night and they didn't have the bundle. I went to another one and they had it, the guy quoted a price of $70. I showed him the ad and he was like "oh sh!t, when is this from?" Then he checked it and saw the date was still good... but then he checked with a manager, came back, and pointed out the "Gamestop reserves the right not to honor misprinted ads" thing. In short, this employee was way too smart for this to work. Oh well, I'm gonna check a few more gamestops today, as well as Wal-Mart, CC, BB, etc. If I can get this, I want it, dammit!

Word on the streets s the Nyko wireless net extender is only SLIGHTLY more useful that trying to make your own net extender out of De Monte green bean cans and Rainbow Brite" shoe laces.

Hot damn! It worked!

Well since the catalogue date is passed, I guess we can offially call this deal DEAD, but I'm glad I got to cash in while it lasted.

And boy, did I get lucky... this just goes to show that persistence and luck go a long way with getting the best cheap ass deals.

Stop 1, yesterday: Gamestop near my house. No bundles in stock
Stop 2, yesterday: other Gamestop down the road. 1 Bundle in stock, but the cashier was smart enough to check with a manager and point out that they don't honor price mistakes
Stop 3, today: Gamestop next town over. No bundles in stock
Stop 4, today: Best Buy. No bundles in stock
Stop 5, today: Circuit City. No bundles in stock.
Stop 6, today: Circuit City down the road. I see a bunch of bundles and pick two up. I get a somewhat bubbly female cashier who seems to enjoy chatting and fraternizing with the customers. She sees the gamestop ad, looks closely to make sure it's the same product, then charges me $80 for both bundles without batting an eye.

It's all about patience, people! Patience and luck. If you get a cashier who won't give you any love, pay no mind. Move on, try someone else, and thank God for CheapAssGamer. I love this site.

Just an update:
I was able to get two more bundles for $39 each and took them to two seperate Targets and got one more Lime GBA SP and Platinum GBA SP. Then I went to Best Buy and got them to price match the Nyco's 2 for $19 each. Took the Nyko's to Gamestop and got store credit for $180, which I will be using to pick up my Steel Battalion Controller Bundle later this week. $59.98 for a $199 Game and Controller. This rocks!

Heh, wish I had VelvetHammer's luck... I tried to get store credit at a bunch of stores and was DENIED almost every time. KayBee almost took it, but then they did that phone thing and told me I couldn't return it because it was purchased at a Circuit City. Target told me that I could only get store credit for an item if it scanned for under $10 (?!). I finally ended up going back to the EXACT same Circuit City I had bought the bundle at. They gave me some static at first but eventually they gave me store credit for the GBA and E-reader... they stuck me with a slight restocking fee, though. But when all was said and done, they took the items and I paid like $5 and change extra to get one of those dual-tone GBA SPs.

So I wasn't as lucky as VelvetHammer, but I won't complain. To all you people who've had good luck at Target, what area are you from? Maybe they're just hardons about exchanges in Long Island stores. Heh, before I was kicking myself for not buying THREE bundles, but after all this hassle I'm glad I only bought two. Still trying to decide if I'll keep the other GBA around or sell it on Ebay. But all in all this has been a great deal for me.
