I might head over to CC today and see if I could luck out and get one of those gift cards. I kinda loss some excitement for this but I know once I get it, it'll be keeping me up a bit later than usual.

I ordered mine from FamilyVideo so it'll be a few days. Can somebody explain 2-on-2? Does each person control a captain and one teammate or how does it work?

Just picked this up ... won my first ever ranked online match. Pretty fun!
My friendcode is: 360883 944618 -- the Mii I'm using is named DannyBoy.
I've added Daroga, Botticus, and Lebowsky to my friend roster.

I had troubled finding my Strikers FriendCode at first, too; it's located at the very top of the screen when you go into "Friend Roster" once you've connected to Nintendo Wifi in-game.
I could be really stupid, but was it posted that it's $44.99 at CC? I was pretty sure that the ads said $49, but mine just rang up at the $45 price. If this is known already, please disregard my stupidity.
As soon as I crack it open, a FC will be forthcoming.

Kind of sucks that it goes by your Mii name... perhaps instead of the 360 gamertag it should be CAGname (Mii Name)

I swung by Target while running some errands today and said what the fuck and bought it. I went straight into 3 online matches and won the first in a sweep then got handed 2 losses. The system doesn't try to put new players against other new players does it? I kept playing against guys ranked in the 100-300s.
Anyway, my code is 159020 494287, mii is Johnathan.
I'll start adding people after I grab a bite to eat.

So do we assume that disconnects so far are just network problems? Seems like whenever I get matched up against someone I can play with competitively (i.e. win the first game), I get disconnected. Rather frustrating. But hey, at least I'm 4-9 now!

Oh, and why in my one match were 2 of my teammates struck with lightening before we started playing?

Oh, and why in my one match were 2 of my teammates struck with lightening before we started playing?I think in Crystal Valley or something, it eliminate 1 or 2 of your team members each round. Kinda odd ;)
botticus
07-31-2007, 07:52 PM
Oh, and why in my one match were 2 of my teammates struck with lightening before we started playing?About half of the fields have environment effects. One has wind blowing across that can knock people off, one has fire balls that create lava filled craters, and another has the lightning bolts that take out two or three people from each team at the beginning.
There might be more, that's just what I can think of off the top of my head.
seanr1221
07-31-2007, 07:53 PM
Ah ok, I thought it was network problems or something (like to prevent lag ;) )
So is there anyway to chose what kind of game you're going to play if it's with someone random? Or do Nintendo's servers determine the gametype at random?

I'm gonna give another ranked match a go, then I'll send an invite to whoever happens to be on my list right now. So far only Sean has gotten validated, still waiting on the rest of the people in the OP.
Network is definitely getting hammered, getting errors when I connect now, as I got them when trying to find an opponent before. I have a feeling this game is going to top Pokemon as far as online activity goes for next week.

This game is awesome just like the gamecube version was, however, online versus an experienced player sucks. Nothing like getting tackled as soon as you get the ball. I may have gotten off about 2 shots in my last versus match. Guess I'll stick to the single player mode for now and practice.
On a positive note, after seeing it in action, I have high hopes for wi-fi on the Wii. Really smooth response with no lag or drops.
Quick question, where is the friend code located? Thanks.

It has been confirmed that players who disconnect receive penalties (I think negative points). There are "seasons" which run each week and the points you earn during your online matches rank you on the current season's leaderboard.
Each week, the season resets, and everyone starts back at zero again.
Thanks for the explanation! I like the idea of the short season and subsequent reset.
I should have this tomorrow but I'm debating whether to get online immediately or not as I've never played the first Strikers, only Sega Soccer Slam (I thought I heard they shared some of the same developers/programmers). I certainly don't want to be handed six-shot goals every minute.
I'll try to add everyone who posted their FC on this thread to my friend's list tomorrow when I get it.

You get one point for a loss (versus 10 for a win) plus one point for each goal you score. So sure your record will be terrible if it takes you a dozen games to get a hang of the game, but it's not as if you'll be at -500 points with no way of being competitive. But I think once you go through the ten tutorial lessons and maybe the 8-game Fire Cup, you'll have the hang of things.
They also keep track of your overall record (which includes unranked friend matches, and won't be reset every week), visible only to you when you log in.

Yea I've used it, it's nice but they still get a Mega Strike off it's just not as effective. Which as we've seen doesn't matter, usually getting one off is just enough!

Wow - the record/stat keeping systems sounds nice! Thanks for the advice, Botticus! I was going to play Soccer Slam as a warm-up before I pick up the game tomorrow, but I may just try to complete a couple levels in Spartan Total Warrior tonight and work on the tutorial and the first or second cup tomorrow night.
Does anyone know if the single player game allows for 2-person co-op? I was hoping my wife and I could play through the first or second cup together before going online.

Yo, I'm in!
Here's my FC: 451078 309357 (Io of course, but Odibee for XBL chat)
I'll add everyone in the OP and the last page or so.
I haven't played online but logged in to get my FC and see what's up. I can't believe that leader guy has a record of 145-27 or some such. I couldn't imagine playing that many games over the entire time I own this thing, let alone in however long he's had it (maybe a few weeks at the most?).
I'll have to try a random match tonight.
I do have to say from playing the first cup I'm disappointed in one aspect and I haven't seen this mentioned. It seems MUCH harder to score regular goals in this game but the megastrike makes the game easier overall (against the CPU in the first cup, anyway). But I dunno, it just seems a cheap way to score to me. I had goal scoring down to an art in the last game and I can't seem to do it at all in this one. My sons and I played through the first cup and I think we scored 1 or 2 regular goals and 15 or so off megastrikes. It is a little harder for me to judge the goal scoring when they are playing as they don't necessarily cooperate but it seems we were able to take the ball down one side, pass to the middle and score much easier in the GC version. We only got one of those this time.
It seems like online matches will consist of nothing but keeping the other guy from pulling off megastrikes. I'll have to see how it goes.

Good luck trying to score by megastrikers in the online game (or even further into the single player) - it takes a big screw up by the other team to get open long enough to pull one off, unless you play against me and you get Super Mario or Super Luigi, then you can do them at all.
yukine, I've added different Mii names whenever they've been brought up, that's about the best I can do. As long as the Mii name is some form of their CAG name (i.e. seanr1221 is Sean), it's not a big deal, unless you just want that added for everyone regardless.

Do you guy think this is worth a buy if you plan to play mostly single player? Keep in mind I never played this on GC...
I just don't know if I'd play online that much - I'm really not that great of a gamer and I think I'd be too embarrassed... but at least there's no chat, so I couldn't hear the people making fun of me :P Hmm...Single player is a lot of fun, but the CPU gets pretty hard pretty fast. I dominated the Fire Cup (1st one) and am getting crushed in the Crystal Cup (2nd one).
io, the computer doesn't really let you do mega strikes after the Fire Cup ;)

I managed to get second place in the qualifying (lost to Mario in the last game so he has me by a point) and won the brick wall award for fewest goals, but I have no idea how that happened, felt like I lucked into any wins. I'm not optimistic about my chances in two rounds of single elimination.

If / when you lose, can you restart at Crystal or do you have to play through Fire again?
Is there a site up yet for online stat-tracking for the game? Just a simple W/L record would be great.

I played a random dude last night (lost 0-2 but didn't do too awful), and then I played Courageous - omg.
My only shining moment was when I blocked all 6 of his 6-shot megastrike. We were playing Lava Pit (or whatever) and he managed to wedge Luigi right behind a pool of lava. There was absolutely no way I could get to him and I totally forgot about shaking the nunchuk to mess up his Megastrike meter.
This is a fun game - but I suck.

So guys. Nintendo Online. How is it? Reviews?
I've only played two matches online and the first one was pretty laggy. The second one, against a CAG, was pretty smooth and a fun game. It is taking quite a while to log into the service right now and some people are complaining about disconnects (possibly network related), but the UK Strikers launch had similar problems during the first week.
I think once the network load starts to stabilize, it will be much more consistent. It is a pretty barebones online experience, but it is still very fun.

So guys. Nintendo Online. How is it? Reviews? If you get a 3 or 4 star connection (you can accept/decline when they tell you the quality), I've only experienced lag once (3 star). Though I guess Spaz had some stuttering problems in our game last night when mine was perfect.
Friend code entering aside, it's very slick. Invites pop up in your face no matter what you're doing in the interface (it will say you're busy if you're in a game so no worries about that). Leaderboards are nice, though I wish they let you scroll through them instead of just seeing the top 10 or 10 immediately around you. Connecting is getting rather dicey as of last night, now that the majority of people have picked it up. If the Euro launch is any indication, that'll get smoothed out in time.

I played through the tutorials last night and played a couple matches against the computer and a couple against Mrs. Tybee (after letting her play through the tutorial as well, in which she did better than me). She hasn't gotten tackling and switching between players on defense down yet, so she had a rough time, but she's good at blocking Mega Strike shots and passing.
I played one random online match last night against what I can only assume was a kid or a badly outmatched adult, because as inexperienced as I am, I beat him 12-0. It was a 3-4 star connection and the lag was only barely noticeable. During the victory video, my wife called me to kill a spider and by the time I came back he had disconnected. I felt bad, but oh well. 20 points for me! ;)
Got most of the CAG FCs punched in and will try to connect with some of you tonight. I know this is a good game because I've got the shakes at work right now, wishing I was home playing it. I really want to unlock some new stadiums and new characters, but my one Fire Cup game so far and the reports from you guys have me feeling intimidated.

Post if you have any interest in setting up a CAG tournament. We have 15 friend codes in the OP right now, so we're on our way to having a good group to work with. Figure we'll wait till the end of the week for more people to pick it up to set things up if there's enough interest.

Thanks for updating the OP, botticus. It's just silly that Nintendo is always going on about "don't reveal your private information!" yet the online name goes by your Mii name (which I assume everyone uses their first real name instead of their handle.) I'll just keep my Mii as "yukine", if I want to play something else I can always change it back real quick.
Regarding the cups, yes you have to restart the current cup. Luckily though, you don't have to go back to the first one (Fire). I made it to the finals on the Crystal Cup and was beaten by Bowser by 1 point, and now I have to go through the whole Crystal Cup again to get back to the finals.
And you guys need to add me, ;) I haven't even played a CAG yet and I added everyone on the OP and only have 2 friends on my list.
Single player is a lot of fun, but the CPU gets pretty hard pretty fast. I dominated the Fire Cup (1st one) and am getting crushed in the Crystal Cup (2nd one).

Glad to know it isn't just me, then, as I hit the wall on that cup as well. Somehow I managed to win one game ;).
Then I tried an online match and actually won the first game 6-5. We each got a megastrike off for 5 points and then I scored a regular goal (the way I used to in Super Strikers with a pass-shot combo). Then in the second game he got off a megastrike and just as I was about to defend I lost the connection. It would seem to be a wierd place for him to drop out as he was probably going to take the lead. How does it know if someone disconnects and how are they punished? Because for all I know my Internet connection went flaky, though it seemed I was still on afterwards. Anyway, my record afterwards was 1-0 with 16 points. Whoo-hoo!
The problem I have, and this is true in general with Wii games, is that I find intense action with the Wii remote and nunchuk to be very NON-ergonomic and I get serious hand cramps and wrist pain. Of course, I had just played 7 or so Crystal Cup matches beforehand as well. But I don't think I could have played again. I think the only reason I let 5 megastrike goals through was that I couldn't keep the remote steady by that point .
As for connection time/lag/etc I had no problems with that last night in my one game and when I connected to add all you guys. But then again I was doing all that at 4am. It logged in very quickly though it did take some time (30 seconds or so) to find me a match. I haven't checked today but after adding everyone and playing online I still wasn't connected to anyone though all the names then showed up (nice that you don't have to type those in at least).
And what's this about shaking the nunchuk to mess up megastrikes? Can you do it even if you are nowhere near the guy?

I was playing at lunch and I got a disconnect as I was tackling my opponent for the ball. It seemed to be a general network problem because I got yet another error once I was booted back to the WFC screen. I highly doubt the other guy disconnected since he had already won the first game of the series.
I didn't lose any points for the disconnect and I assume my opponent didn't either but I don't know how the system keeps track of who disconnected first or how it happened.
Shaking the nunchuk to screw up someone's Megastrike meter is in the manual. I have yet to actually pull it off since everytime someone is trying to pull one off, I am just swinging the remote like a madman. Guess I need to start swinging both hands ;)
EDIT: I'm in for a tournament, I'll be an easy win for someone.

yukine! You can't pick Luigi! I called him! I always look for green on the field!
So I just played a couple ranked games and went up against number 45. I see how these top guys do it now, all they do is lob it back and forth almost looks like volleyball, then they try to smash it in. It takes so damn long too, they'll use the lobbing to waste time and score like one goal or two.
What pissed me off is I think the first game he played regular, I got him 3-0. Then he started doing the cheap lob bullshit. Then it was the most annoying matches. I put up a fight but it feels so slow. It makes it boring, similar to snaking in MK that once you learn how to do it, its all you do. Going against on of the higher ranked guys I thought I'd see something cool but it was all lobbing! What the fuck!?

So they are just lobbing to keep the ball out of reach and charge it up at the same time? That's lame. There has to be a way to break their lobs. Laying out the intended passing target is one possibility, although it will give them a special item....

Could someone explain this lobbing thing and charged passes? After playing through the tutorial (AFTER beating the Fire cup and not knowing a thing about the different levels of "glow" to the ball) I realized it is easier to score goals when the ball glows white. The CPU players in the Crystal cup get that damn thing glowing right away and I can't seem to get it that way. I tried the chipping thing (Z button) but I always lose control of the ball that way. How do you get the charge up on passing? I pass all over the place and nothing happens. And then what are these people doing to lob the ball?

But if you pass long enough, the ball will charge and eventually be white/fully charged. Not sure if it's a fixed amount of passes or affected by your player passing abilities.

To charge up the ball you just have to pass the ball between teammates without a break. The ball glows different colors after each successful pass in sequence. I think it takes like 5 passes for it to turn white. If you shoot with a charged ball, your chances for a goal are greater than just shooting willy nilly.
To lob the ball, you hold down Z and then pass. It does a lob pass to your player instead of passing on the ground. If you keep the lob passes up, the ball charges like normal, but you are less likely to get the ball intercepted (unless your player gets flattened before the pass gets to them).
Also, as stated above, you can cancel a shot by hitting A while holding down B for a charged shot. Your character will look like they are going to shoot, and then they will pass, thus faking the shot.
What you do (at least from my experiences) is you charge the ball as if you were going to shoot it, then you pass the ball while holding down the shoot button. Pretty much every move in the game is cancellable, and if you're tricksy, you can keep confusing people. It's great using items while you're charging a super shot, by the way.
I knew I could use items while passing/shooting, but I never thought of trying to pass out of a shot to get it charged up. I'll have to try that.
Edit - ah, using Z. Well, of course I just went by the tutorial and saw that Z was used for chipping the ball ahead and thought that was all it was good for. If you push Z doesn't it do that immediately, or is it only when you let go of Z (so if you hold it down and then press A or B something different happens)?
I also swear that I have passed the ball back and forth like 10 times and had no charge up occur. I thought I was missing something like the need ot hold down A or something to charge the pass.

I think you are right about Z. Tapping it chips it ahead (which is probably completely useless) and holding it down and then hitting A (lob pass) or B (lob shot) executes the lobs.
All you need to do to charge the ball is pass without a break in the sequence. I just checked the manual (yes, I read it) and it says that the colors change like this:
purple, red, orange, yellow, white
I also think there might be audio cues on how charged the ball is getting, but maybe I was imagining them.

Yeah, I think that's part of the problem, from a design standpoint. I find I have no use for "shake" tackling when I can get the ball simply by pressing the d-pad. Same deal with passing (A) versus tipping (Z). What's the point in simply kicking it away when you can maintain (or regain) control of the ball?

Shake tackling is much better used for when someone is getting pass happy.
What I love about the controls is you can pass then shoot without lifting a finger. Who would have thought one of my favorite uses of the wii-mote doesn't really involve motion, just convenience :D

I would call the wiimote flick a slide tackle, where the dpad is more of a steal. The slide tackle is faster and knocks the ball loose vs the dpad is slower but gives you possession.

Tackles also smack someone into the electrified fence/off the field if you're near the edge.

Anyone figure out if when people turn off their Wii on you, if you still get points? I just played 3 games and EVERY fucker blatantly disconnected. First game in round 2 i got a lead and he quit. Second I was up 3-0 and he quit. Third game I took the first round, second round he quit as soon as I got off a Luigi megashot. I noticed my points went up for the complete games, but I wasn't sure if I got points for the disconnect games where I had a lead.
I think I'm doing alright, my record that shows when I login (the one that includes friend games) has me at 35 W - 17 L. I can't get a grasp on that lobbing magic though.

I hate that stage. You try to round out your team for strategy and it all gets thrown out the window.
I didn't even know that the stage does that until I played Courageous...

I haven't been doing too badly I guess. So many damned spammers online though. I'm 27-15 last time I checked. I won most of the series' I played
Too many times have I watched untalented players Hammer deke their way across the pitch. They dont seem to realise that Hammer Bros phail against timing. I've had a lot of disconnections from people, and maybe one or two from our wireless signal (which sucked sinc I was winning both times.)
I'm all up for a tourney. Bagsies on Mario if he isn't already taken.
I know you get a win if the other person disconnects, and I think you get some points too, I don't know for sure but I'd say that its a ten point bump at least for the victory let alone the goals.

I've been getting a lot of lag today too, sadly the lag never works in my favor.
Theres nothing worst than batteries going out though. This one game the other guy just stopped moving. My batteries ran out mid-game too. Turn the volume low on the remote when you play, makes a huge difference in battery life.
And on another note.. I'm getting the hang of this lobbing, I may have to start calling Luigi's team the Green Lobsters ;)

Well I got my first online win tonight - finally! I could tell that the guy I was playing was about the same skill level as me so it was a competitive match.I had scored in my previous defeats so at least I had that going for me.
I think the key for me winning a game was to lay off the power tackles somewhat and stick to mostly slide tackles with the d-pad. Most of my points were scored off Skill Shots - as you said before, I think the sidekicks are actually more important than the captain.

Alright, this is annoying. Problem is, I think its on my end, with a DSL connection being split five different ways. I'm trying to get a series done, and I've been doing well (because of lag? I dunno), and my Wii keeps dropping the connection, even after I won a series, but while updating stats. I'm still stuck at 0-0 >_<

I changed up my sidekicks for online play, finally... tossed Dry Bones in lieu of Koopa (along with Hammer Bro and Boo). Good passing skill is really beneficial in keeping your time of possession up, which makes things generally less chaotic, albeit no less difficult.
As far as tackles vs steals, it seems to depend on how your opponent is playing. Though I tend to get caught up in doing one or the other - my end stats show I either had 20 hits and zero steals or 10 steals and zero hits.

oh, sure, io, log off before I could invite you to a match! ;)
D'oh! I checked and no one was on according to my friends list!
I could get back on if you want, though I just played a ranked game and am starting to feel the pain now. Seriously, I can't play this game more than 5 or 6 times before it hurts... But if you want I probably have one more in me ;).
I did much better in my ranked match than against Yukine, that's for sure. I was able to get off a couple of megastrikes but also had a few set upon me. I am so hyped up for these online games that I cannot hold the remote steady to block (yet I managed to get half of them anyway). This match was in the crystal canyon place so megastrikes were easier with half the sidekicks missing each time. But the other guy used Birdo and Hammer Bros and got off a ton of skill shots that I could seem to do nothing against. He'd twirl Birdo so I couldn't hit him, then do a skill shot that went in without fail every time. With the Hammer Bros he'd just pound his way up the field, then after I'd inevitably miss, power one in with him as well. Those two chars do seem kind of cheap - like they shouldn't get the great avoidance moves if they have such a powerful shot as well. I was using Toads for the passing, and they don't seem to do much for their dodge move OR skill shot.
I have to say this game plays NOTHING like the original Strikers as far as I'm concerned, and that doesn't come across at all to me in the reviews.

I will be gone Saturday and Sunday, so I think I will close tournament entry period on Sunday night when I get back. Hopefully we'll get a few more interested parties before then. We have ten so far - check the OP and let me know if I have your listing marked appropriately.
I'll set up a bracket once the deadline hits, we'll get it started sometime next week. Any opinions on format? I was thinking about following the Cup format, do x number of qualifying rounds, then just seed baed on qualifying record (depending on number of entrants, everyone from qualifying will move on, or we may eliminate some people). Single or double elimination?
Here's what I've come up with for the OP so far - any suggestions will be considered up until the start of the tournament:
Tournament Info
The first CAG Strikers tournament will begin on a TBA date the week of 8/5. Sign-up will close on the evening of 8/5 so I can begin putting together the schedule. I hope we will be running more tournaments in the future, so don't worry if you miss this deadline.
Format/Rules:
The tournament will consist of a number of qualifying rounds where each player will play against the others once. There will be no set schedule for the qualifying matches - please complete them as quickly as possible. Seeding and qualifiers will be determined based on the qualifying results and number of entrants respectively.
Matches will consist of the standard best-of-three three-minute games. Stadiums will be limited to those without environmental effects (a list will be compiled of qualifying stadiums). As in the Cup matches, the winner of the each game will receive three points, and the loser will receive zero points - except in the case of a sudden death loss, where they will earn one point.

As far as Birdo goes, instead of trying to tackle him/her, you can try to position yourself in front of them while they fire off the skill shot. The egg should hit your player and explode (knocking you for a loop), avoiding a goal.
I noticed this when I was using Birdo against the CPU. I was able to get off a lot of Skill Shots, but the CPU was always getting in front of them and killing my scoring chances.
Of course all of this advice is coming from someone who sucks, and it is probably easier said than done.

I thought the exact same thing. I didn't play the original that much, but I went through 2 cups I think and played some random stuff and everything I learned was pretty much useless. What worked for me in the original strikers was basically quick passes and then a quick shot at the net and you've got a goal, but that doesn't really work anymore unless you pass enough to charge it up.
It's all about the charging now, you have to charge, skillshot, or mega strike to get a goal.
I'll join in on the tournament, I'm taking 2 weeks off before school starts again so I'll be good any time next week.

We need to call it a Luigi Cup then! Winner gets right to dibbs on Luigi. The catch? No one can play as him! I'm content as Mario though, its pretty much I like his music so damn much.
So I just played two games and they had the worst lag I've ever experienced. I was playing against a guy who didn't know what he was doing at all and I got off 2 Megashots but it didn't register my B presses. And then for a time, it seemed like the analog was stuck going right cause I couldn't move left. It ruined my timing for everything so I sadly had to resort on a couple Hammer Bros shots. Then the second game I played, dude got a megashot on me and IT LAGGED AS THE BALLS CAME AT ME. It didn't register my A presses, the balls came slow as fuck, then then it said connection lost. Its a Thursday morning! I could only imagine how the lag will be come the weekend.

It's probably going to be a week or so before the network stuff gets worked out. I think the UK players had over a week of flakiness before everything smoothed out.

yes...another tourney would be great. a friend of mine and myself took a vacation to play all day yesterday. and it was glorious. the entire game is fantastic.
i thought that the lack of voice communication wouldn't be a problem...but i was wrong. it is a problem...and least a very big annoyance. i've read some rumors that voice recognition/audio in capabilities could be implemented into the current wii remote [or as a headset] sometime in the future. how likely would this be and how much noise would all of us need to make to get this to happen?

So why is everyone Luigi? I'm only gonna go for my homegirl, Peach :) (since I tend to be her in WAY too many games)

Luigi is an all around good player. He is identical to Mario except that people like his intro music more ;). I've been playing with Peach since she is really fast. Her shooting sucks and her special isn't all that great either...why am I playing as Peach again? Anyway, at least she is pink so I can tell her from the other players.

Luigi is the Antonio Banderas of Mario Strikers. On his off days he enjoys a mimosa on the beach wearing his carelessly unbuttoned floral shirt, stroking his mustache at the beautiful ladies, basking under the heat of the Italian sun.
Mr. Romance needs a spinoff game now, solely based around his theme song. The other theme songs seem to tell their own stories as well. Wario is apparently Russian and is in cahoots with Zangief. Diddy was once Aladdin's monkey. Waluigi is a hick. And generic rock music is abundant in the Mushroom Kingdom.

I recommend using this character model along with the music in this proposed spinoff:

Maybe give him a rapier.
Finally got around to adding the codes from the OP last night, so if I could get some adds, it'd be appreciated. :D
I'm glad to hear that the lag problem is an overreaching thing and not just me. I tried playing about an hour ago, and it was almost unplayable (especially the megashot blocking).
I'd be in for the tournament, but A) I'm fairly awful, and B) I can never really guarentee when I'll be able to play. Ah well, maybe next time.

Ah well, maybe next time. The way I'm hoping the tournament will work is that at least in the qualifying, you won't need to play at a set time, just whenever you can play the people you need to. If it takes a month for you to do so, that might be tough, but it shouldn't be that bad.
The playoff rounds will need more rigidity since the next round can't start until the previous round has been completed.

I just played my first online match. I won 2-1 then 1-0 in SD. The guy started being a bitch in the second round and just spammed hammer bros over and over and over but he still didn't score.
Got knocked out of the Crystal Cup last night but will be attempting it again in a moment. I got destroyed my first 2 matches in CC but then ended the season 7-3 and in the first seed. It isn't so difficult that it makes me quit, it just really forces you to perfect timing and technique very quickly.
Love this game so far. i was very on the fence but also really wanted something I could pick up and play without spending 10 hours on it a night. The gameplay feels more like hockey and it's just outright fun.
My Friend Code is 068826-355040. I'm going to add everyone in the OP.

For the tourney, say cut if off at 16-20 people so it relatively quicker to get all the games played. I'd say go for a simple single elimination, then next one maybe we can go round robin or something more technical. Do random matchups, but for each matchup have a pre-determined stadium. Also a coinflip for home/away, since home team gets first pick on characters.

So how do you stop the Hammer Bros spamming? I can't seem to tackle someone doing that, and then they just score at will. I might have stopped him a few times, anyway. I mean, the random guy I played last night didn't score every time using it. I just have no idea how and need a consistent method if this is going to be widespread. Birdo I kind of figured getting in front worked as I did that by accident once or twice. It's just my gut instinct to tackle like hell when I see someone going for a power shot ;).
Daroga, I could try a 2-on-2 with my son, but you'll probably win even easier that way. We could give it a shot though. Botticus - as of late last night I'm still not showing you on my FL (along with several other CAGs). Nintendo needs to work on getting the FL's to sync up faster if they are going to make us enter all these codes!

Hammer Bros is all timing. If you just charge at his jukes as I like to call it, then you'll get hit each time. You need to wait till you see his animation starting, then you go at him with a tackle. Same thing when using him. You have to wait till they're coming at you then you hit the dpad and knock them out the way.
Birdo is becoming annoying now too. All the other characters take a little bit more timing/luck to score instantly with their charge shot.

Gotcha. It ws obviously this guys "thing" to use a Hammer Bros and Birdo as his forwards and spam spam spam. Fortunately the Crystal stadium negated much of that as those two often got knocked out. If I had an effective method of countering both of those I would have destroyed him. As it was, I still managed to win one game and lost another in SD, and that was with all his cheap Birdo and HB shots. Mine were all megastrikes and pass/pass/pass/pass/pass/shots ;).

Hmm... I forget... Do you get an item if you get hit by the Hammer Bros deke? Sure, you could get hit by it once but sending a red shell, or even a few banannas in his way would end the spam pretty quick.

Hammer Bro abusers never see Toad coming. Boo is good at taking them out too. I think its better to play against harder opponents instead of what seems like kids who don't know whats what. You see better strageties and such to learn from. I just wish more people mixed it up instead of the constant 2-3 Hammer teams I've been seeing.
Anyone try the Classic game mode? It takes off the special shots from the sidekicks.

You should get credit for any games you won that were completed in the series (which should be at least 1 if you won the series). I had a 1-0 record since I got disconnected in game 2 the first time I played. I got the full 10 points for the win + more for the goals.

The game ends your single player cup run if you reset during a knockout match. I wish it could tell if someones disconnecting during online and kept a tally for that also.
It's not like you lose points if you lose, you just don't gain as much.

That's wierd because you get your point tally at the end of each game in the series and those points should stick no matter what happens in the next game.

ya it gives the tally I dont think you actually get said points though until the end of the series. I imagine to stop people from dropping after winning just the one game maybe?

I played konicki today online. Naturally I won8-) lol j/k. We had some pretty close matches but I ended up winning the four series' we played. Anyone else up for a game in an hour or so? I can't say for definite what time I'll be on but it'll be some point tonight.
Todays other online experiences include some guy who's only tactic was Peach and a team of Toads who all tried and ultimately failed to jump over my keeper and score. Its cute and all but...y'know...what with the internet being made of lulz and phail and all...
