This may show my age, but I've been a huge Jeff Minter fan for at least 15 years. He made the highly acclaimed Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar. He also developed the "Neon" engine which is the media lightshow built into every 360.
I just discovered that he is now working on a Tempest type shooter using his Neon engine for live arcade. Awesome news.

Rock! Now let him give us a Defender 2000 sequel (I'm pretty sure the same guy was responsible for both).

Jeff Minter makes spectacular games. Tempest 2000 made the Jaguar worth owning, and is still incredibly enjoyable to this day.

This is AWESOME! T2K is one of my favorite games, and a HD sequel (with customizable soundtracks, no less) will be sweet.

Hell yes!!! I played this a ton in my Jaguar. Hope Minter does a lot more of his style of updated games.

Has anyone seen a possible release date for this?

None yet, but it seems fairly far along. I'm just wondering what it's going to be called.
I loved Tempest 2000 & its sequel on the short-lived NUON DVD platform, Tempest 3000 (http://www.nuon-dome.com/t3krev.html), so this is going to be a very welcome XBL addition.
Minter really is one of the best-kept secrets in gaming, thanks largely to him developing for lesser-known platforms (Commodore, Atari 8-Bit, Jaguar, etc.) and having his bigger project fall flat due to bad luck (anyone remember Unity for Gamecube (http://www.multiplayer.it/galleria.php?id=4791)?). Hopefully this project will get him some much-deserved recognition.
I'd love to see ports/updates of Gridrunner and Llamatron.

Unity was canceled (or more specifically, shelved indefinitely).
This new game's official name (at least so far) is Space Giraffe. He mentioned on his blog before that he can't use the Tempest name without paying Atari ridiculous royalties.
BTW, you do know he developed the "Neon" , visual light show in the Xbox 360 dashboard? Space Giraffe is simply a game he made on top of a more advanced version of it.

Oh and look at that, he just put up a long youtube video of Space Giraffe today:)

Lesser known? The Commodore 64 was the #1 game platform on the planet for several years. The lesser known is Minter himself. He has never been willing to do the things necessary to make it big in the field. He's content to work in relative obscurity so long as he makes enough to keep himself in sheep.

This is awesome news, this game should give Geometry Wars a run for its money!!
Minter is a legend.

Really?? The built in music visualizer? I hate to say it but I was not impressed at all.
G-Force makes it look child's play. I even thought the iTunes visualizer looked better.
The main problem is it just cycles thru every color, which ends up looking like some
kid's ugly fingerpainting...when you mix every together you end up with brown.
I'm assuming the game will be a lot better than that.
Or hopefully I am talking about the wrong visualizer
and the Neon is hidden away and not the one I saw...
