The british mag "GamesMasters" had a preview in their latest issue that disclosed that the deathmatch mode (featuring 16 players simultaneously) for Crackdown will only be available through the marketplace. No word if its free or will cost you points though...

I know only co-op was initially planned but never heard of multiplayer. They are probobly finishing the game they had in mind first and then later on we'll see the multiplayer. Hopefully they follow Kameo's route and make it free. Either way, I'll probobly end up getting it.

It'll cost you something. If not, why have it as a download when they could easily throw it on the disk?

That's great news! Here's hoping that it will be free.

I know the ugly side of downloading and the HDD are patches but I think this is kind of the upside to it. We get the game early but then we get a feature down the road that would add months to the release date. Personally, I never play multiplayer until after I beat single player anyway.

I agree 100%. For them to add this in, it would mean further delaying the game probably well into 2007.
This game is heavily single player based and has co-op right out of the gate, so that's good enough for me. Can't wait for this game.

Obviously, it would be best for the game to launch with this already in the game but as far as I'm concerned this is the absolute next best thing.
I'm really looking forward to this game.

None of these "sand lot" games appeal to me, I tire of them before I have slain my 15th innocent prostitute. What an oxymoron I know but starting with the original GTA I have sampled nearly every game from this genre and found them all lacking in motivating me to play them beyond a few hours. I still do take the time and sample all them that I can I DLed and demoed Saints Row for example, I guess I hope each time to find that thrill that other including my friends and family find in these, but alas each time I tire quicker and end up wishing I had those few minutes of my life back. Its not that I hate the thought of them or have something against the type of action and story that they contain its simply that I am not moved in the least by their style of play. So here is to hoping Crack Down is indeed different and that this multi player is perhaps what make this game stand out where others have not. Thanks for the info OP. Oh and yes I know this is not exactly like Saints Row or GTA but as far as what I know about this game it will approximate that style of play. Unless I am recalling wrongly.

FWIW multiplayer makes sandbox games a lot more fun. My friend and I have played the hell out of Liberty City Stories on multiplayer and that multiplayer isn't even that great.

that would be sad if you had to pay extra for MP

I agree, what I said about this being great about not holding up the game is totally negated if they charge extra for the multiplayer.

I don't think it has an official ETA even though ebgames lists it for 10/16
