View Full Version : [Dead] FINAL FANTASY XII Limited Edition Guide (Leatherbound) Preorder - $20 @ Amazon

When I was in EB the other day the clerk was trying to get me to preorder this special edition guide for FFXII and he said it was a GS/EB exclusive. It's not. Preorder this from Amazon and you'll get it for $19.79 instead of $29.99 at GS/EB.
The book is leatherbound and will be very limited so jump on this one guys.
Don't forget to add something else to bump the total to $25 or over so you can get FREE shipping.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0744008344/
UPDATE: Amazon has stopped taking pre-orders on this guide and has removed the item completely probably meaning that after it fills its pre-orders it will not be carrying this guide anymore.
UPDATE #2: It seems that the guide is a GS/EB exclusive after all and Amazon will not be getting it. Things aren't all bad though as you should get a $5 apology coupon from Amazon if you preordered from them.

I'm not sure. The guy at EB said they were actually gonna be numbered but I think he was BSing me just to get me to prorder it. Since he lied about the exclusivity I don't really trust any of what he said. Those guys will say anything to get you to preorder stuff, it's their life mission.

Yeah, I'm never so sure when I'm talking to someone at EB or Gamestop. I can't tell if there being cool and giving me the scoop or there just trying to get me to pre-order or buy something.

I'm pretty sure these aren't numbered. I'm also pretty sure it's not gonna be all that rare. I think the number made will be along the lines of all the other "Limited Edition" guides (Kingdom Hearts 2, etc.). Sure there'll be less of the LE than the regular, but it won't be just 1000.

Damnit! I will have about $55 in Amazon gift certificates by a week from now.. I was gonna order Phoenix Wright and preorder MegaMan ZX.. but now I might have to skip out on PW again.. when will I ever buy that game?
Call me a collector's whore but if it's a game I'm looking forward to I have to have the cool stuff.

Maybe he meant exclusive because most other stores such as Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart etc...don't sell those Brady Limited Edition guides but the book stores do. I used to get all my guides from Barnes and Noble because they used to do 30% off publisher's price on guides plus I had a friend that worked there and he would special order them and pay for them using his discount so I was getting like 50% off. He got EB/GS discounts too because they're the same company as B&N, but now he doesn't work there anymore and B&N doesn't do a standard 30% off on all guides anymore so I just get them off Amazon.
B&N is taking preorders for this FFXII guide but they're only offering 20% off at $23.99 ($21.49 if you're a member of their club). If you want to get this from a B&N store you'll have to go preorder it there because they have to special order it, it's not something that they will automatically get the day of release.
Even though it might not be numbered (it'd be great if it were though) these guides will still be in short supply simply because of the hardcover. I don't think Brady has ever done a hardcover guide before (I may be wrong).

The Kingdom Hearts II LE ones went really fast and this is FF so It'll be more popular, and FFXII is probably the best PS2 RPG ever made (it did get a perfect 40 in Famitsu) so I can see these going REAL fast and with the leatherbound hardcover I have to assume they'll produce less than Kingdom Hearts II LE.
EDIT: I just remembered that the EB guy said that he had 2 preorder slots left so I'm guessing that the store will only get a predetermined set amount (instead of amount based on the preorders like in most cases). I'll give EB a call tomorrow and see if he'll tell me how many his store was allocated.

I know what you mean, I've had Amazon flake on me once. I did end up reserving it at EB just in case, that way I'm sure to get one and I'll just move the 5 bucks to the game when I get my Amazon copy.

That's kind of odd that he was trying to get you to pre-order the special edition of the guide, instead of the EB/GS exclusive FFXII special edition.
Hell, I work at EB Games and we weren't even given knowledge of a special edition of the guide.
Hm, I don't see a "Limited" version of this guide on bradygames.com. I remember pre-ordering a DQVIII Limited guide from amazon last year as well, but that never materialized. I think I'll wait for the holiday clearance from bradygames online--while leather-bound would be great, saving 50% or more off a regular edition would be harder for me to pass up since I actually use the guide more than collect them...

Awesome :| Well, i'll hope its there in a few months, or some people pick up extra copies. Either way, i need to get the game first.
It seems like Amazon marketplace has a shitload of the KH2 LE guide at a rather cheap price. Perhaps it's not so limited and supply is more than demand.
Hopefully the FF-XII LE guide has a better fate than the KH2 LE guide.

Well, at least there's a purpose for the FFXII guide. I got the full ending easy in KH just by beating it on hard. Only used the guide to figure how to level drives and beat the secret boss, and that stuff was actually after I got the secret ending anyway. I'd imagine a guide would do more harm in spoilers for that game than provide any usefulness.
Someone please tell me FFXII, like pretty much every one that came before it, is gonna be the type of game that a FAQ or guide is useful for. Then I'll just drop the $20 now for the convenience.

Does anyone know what makes this special aside from it being "leatherbound"? Does it still have the artbook that the limited guides usually have or was that canned so it could be leatherbound?
The artbook is what I like in the Ltd. Ed. guides so if they're not including one I'll probably skip it...

*Sigh I just put in a order for this, plus the guide for the new FF7 game and an anime title. When good deals like this come I usually get suckered into purchasing more than I intended to, one reason why I sometimes hesitate coming to this site. Oh well.
I still don't see an LE guide anywhere on the brady site--I guess I'll have to drop them a line and see if there's one in the pipe or if it goes the way of the DQVIII LE...

I just checked Buy.com, and they are selling the 'Signature Series (http://www.buy.com/prod/Final_Fantasy_XII_Signature_Series_Guide/q/loc/106/202887932.html)' guide for roughly $15 shipped. It has 176 pages, the same as the Leatherbound guide (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0744008344/ref=ord_cart_shr/104-2868835-8543941?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) at Amazon.com, so does that mean the LE is simply the strategy guide with leather?

I have looked into your order (#xxxxxxxxxxxx) and I see that
item "Final Fantasy XII Limited Edition Guide" is currently not
available on our web site.
Unfortunately, our supply of some items is limited and these products
sell out quickly.
I am very sorry that you were not able to place your order before our
supply ran out.
We do not know if this item will be available for purchase on our web
site in the future. For this reason, the item is currently not listed
on our web site.
We cannot provide more precise information about the fulfillment of
the order. In light of this uncertainty, we will understand if you
would prefer to cancel your order. As of yet we have made no changes.
I'm going to e-mail them for more details. Has ANYONE who placed an order have it still showing up in their cart properly? I placed mine on the 3rd so i'm curious if those who ordered on the 1st and 2nd will be getting it.

GS/EB have always done the extra 20% off the guide if you buy it at the same time, I've been doing it for years in-store. I'm 99% sure there's a code where you can do it online; it's not automatic.

It's on this page (http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ffxii/ffxii.asp).
Use the coupon code 20GUIDE, which also means you won't be able to use FREESHIPALL or the like.
I never did hear back from Brady about this guide. I'm guessing it went the way of the DQVIII Limited guide and is not going to get made.
Maybe it somehow got reverted to an EB/GS-only deal, but I'm still inclined to think that's not the case.

09-20-2006, 07:30 PM
I'm fairly certain Brady's doing a LE guide for FFXII. The situation's different from DQ8 because, as much as I liked DQ8, FFXII is a much higher profile game than DQ8 in America. KH2 got a LE guide with like 3-4 different covers, and while it can be argued that KH has surpassed FF in terms of popularity, I'm confident that Brady won't pass up on the lucrative opportunity to put out a LE guide for one of the most anticipated games in a while. Ignoring the fanservice-y FFX-2, FFXII is the first mainstream FF (i.e. XI excluded) to come out since FFX, which came out in ~2001.
Do I know if Amazon will come through with the orders? Certainly not, but the worst case scenario is that they cancel my order, in which case I'll just have to look elsewhere for the guide.

I hope this one does, but if it doesn't that's an extra 12 or so bucks I can use towards something else.

I'm sure they'll release an LE guide in some form. FF12 is the biggest game this year, period.

Hmmm...I can't find this item at Amazon (though it's still listed at many other retailers), and I certainly can't find anything about it being leatherbound. The only detail available seems to be that it's 176 pgs, which is pretty lite for a guide imho.

That sir, is really good news! Hurrah!
I haven't seen a FFX guide. Would it be an artwork separate from the guide? Or an expanded version of the guide /w an artwork section?

I meant X-2. X-2 had a LE guide that came with an art book. The FFXII guide is supposed to be like that one but also leatherbound.

Something all you people need to take into consideration before buying this online is the condition it arrives in. I NEVER receive books/guides in mint condition whenever I order them online. Personally, id rather pay an extra $8 and buy it in store in mint condition.

Amazon is good with shipping books if anyone does get it from there. They place it on a piece of cardboard usually larger than the book that just fits the shipping box. The books held to the cardboard with some nice and thick plastic thats heat sealed. Theres usually some airpacs in there as well to keep it from moving. I've gotten three books (and other items) from Amazon.com that have all been shipped like this and in perfect condition when they arrive.

That depends on how good the condition the books were in prior to shipping. I've occasionally seen books that were crushed in the corners, or front page folded, etc :-#

Hmmm...think it's the same thing as Gamestop's $30 LE guide? Or if they even actually have the LE, and mis-titled that?
I'm probably going to order the LE version of the game from Gamestop, but I'm not sure if I want to get the guide from them for $24.00. Isn't Gamestop the only retailer that's supposed to have the LE guide?

So because the guide wasn't shipped to you on the 6th--when it wasn't even supposed to be released, that means amazon probably won't be able to ship these on the official release date? Great logic..
If it's late, it's late. Just because it didn't ship on an incorrect release date doesn't mean it's going to ship late on the official release date.

"The BradyGames Signature Series Limited Edition Official Strategy Guide for Final Fantasy XII is a Gamestop/EB Games exclusive and will include the guide in one of 4-6 different covers, an Art Book containing a collection of Final Fantasy XII art not available elsewhere (90-100 pages approx) and both books will be kept in a Folio Cover shrink wrapped to help protect your guide and art book."

In all fairness, the under $20 price never really seemed too good to be true in terms of pricing, so when Amazon pulled it, it may very well have been because they weren't sure if they were getting allotments. I dislike the idea of supporting GS in a release that noone else is getting, but then again, I have the CE preordered, so I just sound like a hypocrite. If I get any sort of discount buying the LE guide while picking up the game, I may go ahead and do it. Though I suspect it'll be about as "limited" as the KH2 one.

I have a question then, If I preorder this guide at EB now, will it guarantee I get one? I preordered the Limited Edition MGS3: Subsistence late and I only got the regular version and I definitely do not want a repeat of that.
A related question. Was the Kingdom Hearts II Limited Edition guide a GS/EB Exclusive too? The only version I saw in other stores was the regular signature edition.

They don't technically have final pricing available on anything until they come out, so I would just preorder with the $5 down. That'll reserve you a copy. Then you pay for both the game and guide on the same receipt, which will give you the 20% off the guide. You can also just wait and buy it the same day but who if it'll be available.

I was always skeptical about it being leatherbound, but who knows, still three weeks away. Oh damn, it's almost time!!!! Anyway, all the Brady LE guides had similar packaging to Xenosaga 2. MGS3, Kingdom Hearts 2, FFX-2. I don't see why they'd change it now. It looks like the guide isn't any more special any of the previous LE guides. I'm really hating the variant cover stuff though.

Wondering the same thing. Is Amazon/Walmart getting a different SE guide? Or have they just not realized this thing is an EB/Gamestop exclusive yet? I got mine yesterday and no its not leatherbound. Its the EXACT same as the KH2 one sadly. It has the same cardboard type material that gets easily damaged on the outside with an FFXII logo and trooper looking guys(not sure if there are multiple covers)then you open it up and on the left is the art book and the right is the guide.
As for it being limited edition I question it. It SAYS it limited edition on the guide yet the KH2 guide said the same thing and there are 10 million copies of that damn thing floating around.
