YAY.
It's charging now. I picke dup a 1GB memory stick + lumines. I'm excited :D

Question: How would I transfer songs/videos into the PSP? I thought it would of came with a USB.. but I am wrong :( I am an extreme n00b to the PSP so I apologize LOL

I have WiFi in my home.. so with that, I should be able to browse the internet on the PSP and be able to download the latest firmware on it.. right?

Any compatiable USB cable will work... I use the one from my girlfriends mp3 player.

Chacrana

I think the cable's called a mini-b cable. Many digital cameras come with those cables so if you've got one of those, you might not need to buy anything.

And with Wi-Fi, yes, you should be able to get online and everything.

By the way, excellent choice with Lumines.

thanks :)

Any accessories a must? Battery charger? Is the 2200 MaH (is it 2200 or 2400? ::forgot:: )much better then current 1800? A battery charger worth it?

What about this thing:
http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801956

$15 I get a USB + disc? ::shrugs:: I'm checking around now for one of those mini B USB cable.. i don't think i have any :( But i'll look!

BTW I already have a case, so I don't need case recommendations. But any other must have game recommendations would be nice. I like all games but sports, LOL

The 2200 battery last longer.

If you still need a cable I got a new cable from my scandisk mp3 player that i can sell for cheap.

I have a spare mini-usb cable as well, it's not from Sony but that doesn't matter.

You can either download firmware using the PSP or you can download it on your computer and transfer over.

Read the latest firmware features list for what formats are supported for audio and video. I think they have added some in the last few releases since I've upgraded, so I can't recall exactly what's supported except for the obvious mp3 and mpg4.

yukine

Research about firmwares first, I personally recommend NOT to upgrade your firmware. I wish I didn't. :(

lilboo
09-02-2006, 11:39 PM
Why what's wrong with the current Firmware??

I don't have any intention on using it for emulation or anything like that. I still haven't played it yet since it's charging.. but.. what firmware would my PSP have? Is it the latest one??? I got it from the Sony Store..so they could be 'upgraded'? or no? ::Confused::

62t
09-02-2006, 11:55 PM
right now you can downgrade 2.71 or below. If you downgrade to 1.5 you can use homebrew and emulator. You can even use Devhook to trick your 1.5 psp into thinking it is a 2.7. You can also use custom firmware that do many neat things.

thegarageband

Don't upgrade the firmware. Use the Devhook trick. Trust me, an updated PSP is as lame as paying full price for a game.

yukine
09-03-2006, 12:00 AM
Well, if you don't care about emulation or homebrew, then go and upgrade to the latest firmware, which I believe is 2.80?

No. Your PSP wouldn't have the most recent firmware. Once your PSP is fully charged and you have the Wifi all setup, go to "Network Upgrade" or something like that on the PSP and you can download the firmware straight to the system.

62t
09-03-2006, 12:04 AM
even if you are not interst in homebrew and emulation, it is not a bad idea to keep your option open.

So true. The only PSP game I bought was Wipeout Pure on launch day. The only time I use that is when I need to load ISO's with Devhook.

Really though, at least downgrade to 1.50 firmware and try the emulators + Devhook out. I would have sold off my PSP months ago if it wasn't for those. Most of the PSP games out now are just "meh".

im confused.

Why do people seem bothered by the updates?
Is the only problem that they rather use homebrew/emulators OR are there actual problems from the update??

BTW is there a way to check to see what exactly I have? Most likley it's the 2.7?

The only problem is that they'd rather use homebrew / emulators.

If you have no interest in them, just update it and don't listen to the people here.

norkusa
09-03-2006, 01:22 AM
Because once you update, there is no chance of going back and playing homebrew unless somebody finds an exploit or way to downgrade. So once you update, you are basically stuck with it . With 1.5, you can always load up the most recent firmware from your memory stick whenever you want (except 2.80...that hasn't been cracked yet), so you'll have the best of both worlds.

BTW is there a way to check to see what exactly I have? Most likley it's the 2.7?

If you dont have an eyepatch then go ahead and update. There is nothing wrong with updating firmware. Unless you care about being in an imaginary cool club, which isnt really that cool.
If you do decide you want to run all the other crap later, Im sure there will be a way to downgrade the firmware. They always find a way.
We need a code word for the psp, so we can talk about it without everything being a debate about devhook and why you shouldnt upgrade. any ideas?

We're just trying to help. Often people will quickly upgrade the firmware, and then regret it later down the road because they didn't know about emulation and/or the homebrew software that is available for the PSP.

The reason why most people don't want to upgrade is because they can then no longer steal games and play ISO's.

For the most part I've always known about the firmware update/emulation debate. I really have no intention on using my PSP as an emulator.. so I went and updated. I doubt I ever will. I don't want this to become a debate thread: to each their own :P

So ANYway back on topic.. any MUST HAVEs for this system??? T
I played the Locco Roco demo.. that game seems fun.. just really weird lol

Must haves IMO

Outrun 2006
Xmen Legends 2
Tekken
Valkyrie Profile
Daxter
Gripshift
Both Megaman titles
Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins
Syphon Filter
Metal Gear Digital Graphic Novel

and Miami Vice while not a must have is very underrated. Its like RE4 but with no zombies. :D

How can you recommend the Digital Graphic Novel and not Acid 1 & 2!?

Decker
09-03-2006, 04:17 AM
For me, my favorite games :
Burnout Legends ($19.99 now)
Exit (also $19.99)
Daxter
Tekken
Syphon Filter
Lumines

and Madden 07 is, well, Madden 07. Not too shabby, if you're into sports games.

OP, congrats on your PSP purchase. Contrary to what many posters here say, there are loads and loads of great games for the PSP. Many are already out, and they are a lot that will be released in the next few months. Enjoy!

And don't worry about the updating crap. As you have no interest in emulation or homebrew, go ahead and update, so you can use your PSP for what it was intended for.

Must haves? My picks are:

Capcom Classics Collection
Lumines
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
Mega Man Powered Up
Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 (love it or hate it game though)
Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel (again, love it or hate it)
Ridge Racer
Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX
Tales of Eternia (Have to import it from Europe, but it works without any sort of modding... it's an excellent RPG.)
Tekken DR
Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth

All of those games are fantastic IMO...

Speaking of all the firmware has anyone heard of a UMD movie region code crack? It would be nice to buy some exclusive UMD Music stuff but Sony hasn't pulled their head out of their ass and region locked according to sense, i.e. either making region free copies of Seo Taiji and C-Kay's UMD's like how BoA's was offered OR just making them all region free since there's no fucking chance of them coming out over here.

Yeah, definitely. Buying a PSP back when it first came out like I did it was a huge mistake, but now it's definitely worth having a PSP.

One of the things about the PSP that I like, is that a lot of game companies seem to be making these extra bonus "games." Like MGS Graphic Novel, and the Silent Hill Experience. I want to see more stuff like that.

Yeah, the MGS DGN was pretty awesome. It's nice, because the system is a perfect platform for that sort of thing, and prior to this, we really didn't see oddities like digital graphic novels in the US. I just wish that we could see some more 2D games that take advantage of the system...

Huh? There is alot of 2D games, and alot of 3D games that take place in a 2D field. I'd say a good majority of them take advantage of the system nicely.

2D:

Loco Roco
Darkstalkers
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Generation of Chaos
Disgaea
Riviera
Valkyrie Profile
Breath of Fire 3
Tales of Eternia
All the collection games (Capcom Classics, Namco Classics, etc)
Exit
Gradius Collection
Guilty Gear Judgement
Capcom Puzzle Collection
Metal Gear Acid 2 (cel shaded, still kind of counts)
Astonshia Story
Metal Slug Anthology
Every Extend Extra

3D games that have 2D gameplay:

Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins
Mega Man Powered Up
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
Sonic Rivals

That's just the ones off the top of my head... the PSP has just as much 2D as any other system currently out now other than the GBA / PS2.

Ummm Roufuss wtf?! From the screenshots I've seen the new G&G's game just looks like the sequel to Super and those elements that I've seen aren't exactly 3D and neither are the shots I've seen from Powered Up so how are they possibly 3D?

Chacrana
09-03-2006, 03:18 PM
I should've been more specific -- I meant sidescrollers. I'd kill to see a new Castlevania game that has high res sprites. There's some sidescroller stuff on there now, but most of it isn't exclusive to the system and none of it was designed with the hardware's capabilities in mind.

Read the reviews on 1up, specifically for GandG.

"The control issues can be ascribed in part to the same collision and animation problems that plague all 2D games with 3D graphics; Mega Man Power Up suffers from them, New Super Mario Bros. suffers from them, and so too does UGnG."
"By all rights, UGnG should be spectacular. It's the brainchild of the series' original creator, Tokuro Fujiwara, a man who knows hardcore gaming and (thanks to Tomba 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2017484)) how to create a quality 2D game with polygons. It follows in the footsteps of Capcom's previous 2.5D retro re-creations for PSP, the solid Maverick Hunter X (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3143625) and exceptional Mega Man Powered Up (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3143481)."

3D graphics on a 2D plane.

Oh jeez that's the most pathetic argument, just because you're using polygons doesn't make it 3D in the fullest sense of the word if it's being relegated to a 2D plane. Jeez roufuss I wouldn't think you of all people would nitpick that shit. sighes.
In terms of what you said above Sony won't do that because they're stupid. I've argued if Sony really wants to fuck Nintendo up portably go full 2D and shuck this 3D halfway shit because no 3D game on the PSP will fully match the PS2's power in that respect and it only seems to me like a bunch of idiots jumping for joy at the PS1.5 in terms of 3D. Seriously if Sony really went 2D they would beat the shit out of the DS. Granted the DS has the touch aspect but they'd be showing up Nintendo directly on their grounds in terms of the 2D.

I've said it before, but the current MGS DGN hinted at MGS2 DGN happening. Also, high chances we'll see a second one since ashley wood (the australian artist for the DGN) stated that kojima wanted to continue with the DGNs if the first sold well and initiall sales went well. Plus, MGS PO will have alot of art and elements from ashley wood for cutscenes.

Man, an MGS 2 DGN would be awesome. What I liked about the first one was that it explained some elements of the story that weren't quite clear in the original game... definitely a good thing because it put my mind at ease about a few things I've been wondering about for the last 8 years or so.

But ANYway back on topic :P

I just got that joytech Armor.. mmm I love that. I also picked up Infected because I was at circuit city and saw it for $10 so I figured why the hell not? I like it! Only did like 3 missions..but still!

I also got that media pack..the $15 thing from Gamestop, and that's really easy.
So far I'm really loving the PSP. I think I overally enjoy my DS more because of the games that are out AND are coming out: But as a cooler system I'd def say PSP is just really awesome with the stuff it can do.. (as well as a good library of games coming out)

360, and a Wii and I'm pretty much set

Even if you never want to use homebrew, devhook allows you to up the PSP's processor speed from 222mhz to 333mhz. While the increase reduces battery life, it increases game time speeds (such as loading is reduced and such).

Which brings me to a question, lol me and my friend really have no idea how it's pronounced. It looks like "LOO-MINES" but reading the back of it.. the context makes it sound like "LOO-MIN-ESS" ..so, what's the actual way of saying this??

yeah, probably the best part of the DGN was how condensed the story became, making it easyer on readers... plus jamming every detail in the story would have been hell for when it was originally released in comic book form (i've got issue 1 of it!... that's it...). Sons of Liberty is currently running through comic books, so once that's done, all the material is there for the next DGN.

I must be the only person who finds this game lackluster and boring as hell. Storylines well..weak its basically last few seconds of each chars lives and some obscure stuff with Valkeryie. I "hate" the way you materialize stuff. I "dispise" how long i takes you to use your casters unless you master how to juggle monsters off the ground to get combo orbs. I found the fighting system more repetitive than most and lackluster. Having to go through a 30 second channeling phase to find a new town or a dungeon is annoying. Running around and using freeze blocks like some half hearted platformer was a dumb idea to me as well. I don't know I'm in chapter 4 and just having an annoying time with this game its like it tried to reinvent to many things at one time leaving me with a lackluster feel. Then again maybe I'm doing something wrong in the game *shrugs* who knows.
