I realize there are many, many, reccommend a book threads, but most result in many sci-fi/fantasy book answers, two genres I generally don't like, (are zombies sci-fi? if so, thats the exception, and I would LOVE reccomendations of zombie books)
I also have a problem with 'classic' books, because for some reason, the thought that somewhere, someone, is reading the book as a school assignement, really puts me off (again, there are exceptions- catcher in the rye, johnny got his gun, and crime and punishment)
My favorite authors and books, for referance:
Bukowski
Chuck Palah... (the guy who wrote survivor and diary)
I'm loving the first half of The Crying of Lot 49. (note, the first half, no spoilers please)
I liked "The Fuck Up" but forgot who wrote it...
I kinda sorta like John Krakauer, and plan to read the book he wrote about psycho morman sects (don't remember the title, just read the summery for it in the back of Into the Wild)

Anything come to mind similar to this stuff?

"The Rising (http://www.amazon.com/Rising-Brian-Keene/dp/0843952016/sr=8-1/qid=1157411425/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-4185682-3939922?ie=UTF8&s=books)" is an awesome zombie apocalypse book. Very gruesome and descriptive. And the one story line is set in the general area I live (the characters would've had to pass by my house at one point :)).

If you're looking for a straight fiction .. I go with my standard recommendations of "The Testament" by John Grisham and "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier (the book is way better than the movie).

How about "Atlas Shrugged" by Ann Rand? "Tropic of Cancer" by Henry Miller. "Duel" (The story behind Aaron Burr and Hamilton) by Thomas Fleming. As you can tell, I am looking at my bookshelf right now...

the FUCK Up is by Arthur Nersesian. You need to check out his other books as well. My favorite of his is Suicide Casonova, but I have enjoyed all of his novels.
