09-15-2006, 01:45 AM
All I can say to those resellers is a big "Bah"
I personally don't mind people selling games, but its near insanity for them to be double the price and more of the original MSRP.
Apossum

"limited quantities" would not imply a reprint.
but hey, if they're still there by tomorrow night, it might just be a reprint.

Yeah, and given that Atlus has to know the used prices have driven up so high, if they didn't put "limited quantities" people would probably take their time buying it. When they say limited quantities everyone will jump on it right away because the alternative is the $100 ebay price for a used copy.
I'm in the same opinion as you. If tomorrow, after I get paid, its still in stock on Atlus, I'll probably order a copy.

What's it matter with the reprint? Were you thinking of reselling it? If Atlus reprinted it, I don't think it will be too bad as the game has been reprinted many times already (correct me if I'm wrong), but each time its been a small reprint.
Also, something that I like to see is that gamequestdirect.com doesn't have it in stock... http://www.gamequestdirect.com/730865530052.html

The game already had 3 reprints. Even if this is a reprint, it is a small, limited run.
And within a few months, the demand will go up once again and it'll be selling for the same price it is right now. $90+ complete and $130+ new.

I think I had a unique experience. When I clicked on the game, it showed me my "shopping cart" and I had 1 in there. Just playing around, I addedd 999 in there just to see how much they had and they added it and even rounded it up to 1000. The price was somewhere around $15,000, and shipping was only $15.
In any case, I only bought one, but am going to leave it unopened until I finish my backlog.

Yeah since I haven't heard from them today I may end the auction tomorrow and relist it once/if I get an actual shipping confirmation.
We don't know how limited it actually is. Their website inventory is not real-time and I had heard of cancelation when they didn't have enough Atelier Iris 1 ($19.99) to fulfill.
The payment is handled by Paypal and therefore you get charged immediately. It doesn't mean you will get your copy.
Also, I don't think I ever received any shipping confirmation from them. My orders simply arrived in my mail.

My orders simply arrived in my mail.
so you never got any email/confirmation when ordering direct from Atlus? that's gay... i better get the damn game :bomb:

I used free shipping on mine, so I think that might have been the catalyst on it selling within 5 hours. But still, I think I can go ahead and eat the loss on $4 to have it sell a few dollars higher than some other people have it up for.

I called Atlus and was told my game would ship "in the first batch early next week."
I ordered last night shortly after this was posted.
It sounds good for me getting the game, but it doesn't sound so good for the "limited" part of this re-release if they're talking "batches."

That's why, if you have a used copy you want to dump, you've got to do it ASAP in case this is a reprint. The longer the wait the more you are gambling.

I guess that means I'm good to go. 8)And, I think the mean batches of shipments, not batches of reprints. But hey, I'm just happy to get a new one for a standard new price. This seems like it just fell out of the sky and I am still in shock about it...happy as hell....but still in shock.

Disgaea has been reprinted before by Atlus so I'm guessing this is another round. I think only the original run had the Sony sticker you find at the top of most PS2 games.

A quick question to those who have ordered, do you have to place the Nocturne soundtrack in your cart with your other purchases in order for them to send it? Or will they automatically send the CD with my order, regardless of whether I added it to my cart or not? I ask because I ordered Disgaea earlier, and did not put Nocturne in my cart, and so I'm a bit worried that I might not receive the CD. Thanks.

The purpose of an investment is to make money, not come out even. Your purpose in buying games is to play them and lose as little money as possible, not solely to profit from it.

I just got $100 for my used one with a BIN, I'm trusting Atlus on this one. If I wait until people start getting them and start listing them, prices are going to lower with everyone competing against each other.
You do know that I hate you intensely for that?
A little history here - I had found a used Disgaea about two months ago back when EB still sold it for a reasonable $44.99. I still had a sealed one from the Fry's reprint last summer. I figured why ruin the sealed one, so I put it up on ebay to make up the price of both copies, hopefully - resulting in a free Disgaea to play. Back then used were going for $60 or so and new for $80-$100. I started it at $100 and it got a lot of looks but no bid for 5 days, so I lowered it to $89 or so and it finally sold. Keep in mind this is for a SEALED copy. Then when Disgaea 2 came out I mentioned this (as people were wondering if Disgaea 2 would be valuable - it won't by the way) and Roufuss pointed out an auction for a sealed Disgaea that went for $165. Now he sells a fucking USED copy for $100. Bastard :D.
I hate to say it guys, but there is an absolute FLOOD of Disgaea on eBay right now. When mine didn't sell for 5 days at $100, there were only 1 or 2 others listed at the time! Now there are 53 current auctions. Roufuss played it just perfectly - I would expect the used price to go down to $60 or even lower with all these auctions listed. Still, if you want to 'upgrade' your used copy to new you can probably break even. I might do that - problem is I'm heading out of town tomorrow and can't manage an auction till next weekend. If Atlus is still selling them THEN, look for the prices to go WAY down - in fact you might be able to get sealed copies for less than $50 then. But like all the other reprints it will probably be temporary and the price will be back up by Christmas.

I think everybody just got that Paypal receipt, but nothing directly from Atlus. By the way, about whether or not it was reprinted, the comments from an administrator in this thread on Atlus' forums implies that it was because they didn't think it should be selling for such high prices (translation: they realized there was enough demand that they could make money by reprinting it).

This is the same reason why they print most of their games in small initial runs. They would lose too much money on copes that don't sell.

I don't think this is entirely fair, because if it was solely about making money, they could've easily charged more than their MSRP when selling reprints of their own games. Atlus, in my experience, has always been a company that is very good to their fans.

These NIS-developed games are very, very detailed. You can play through them without doing all the extra things, but they have so much extra gameplay material that it feels kind of overwhelming at first.
Personally, I prefer the simpler types of games in this genre. Final Fantasy Tactics and Vandal Hearts 1 on PS1 will probably always be my top two favorites.

Simple is the best. I think a big reason Disgaea never imprsssed me was because of the entire Shining Force collection. I mean, II and III are still the best strategy RPG's in my honest opinion. And Shining Force I was impressive back in its day. And CD is just a huge treasure box of battles, nothing wrong with that!
I mean, even Arc the Lad and Dragon Force left me a little jaded towards games like Disgaea and even Tactics [which was most people's first strategy RPG]

It's a pity their American branch is so small that they have to worry about overprinting games while companies that churn out consistent junk like EA or Midway are so successful. It's like indie films versus Hollywood movies, I guess.

Well, if you can find a Saturn or a Genesis, ALL of them hold up...maybe III more than the others..but II and III are the best
If you have a GBA, I suggest you find Shining Force Resurrection of Dark Dragon
It's Shining Force I with better graphics, some slight improvements to gameplay, a card collection type mini game, and redesigns on most of the art.
You might think it's too simple, but it's quite good actually...lots of innovative concepts for its time [early early 90's] : terrain, altitude, class differences, etc.

I have a Saturn actually. I originally got it in 1999 for Capcom fighting games , the Japanese version of Dracula X, and Radiant Silvergun. I find getting Saturn games to be a pretty expensive proposition though.
If you have a GBA, I suggest you find Shining Force Resurrection of Dark Dragon
I'll look into this one.
speaking of srpgs...im currently playing Stella Deus and its pretty generic and boring. any other good srpgs while we're on topic? If you're only into PS2 era games, I recommend Front Mission 4 which can be had pretty cheap just about everywhere. It looks like a mech combat game but it's an SRPG. Suikoden Tactics is also surprisingly good, but also simplistic compared to modern stuff.
If you don't mind PS1, I recommend Final Fantasy Tactics and Vandal Hearts 1. Both these games had some of the best storytelling and characters ever.

Well, no, it's not like indie movies, some indie movies make huge money.
We just have to accept that -most- gamers aren't into this type of stuff. I don't like Disgaea but I love strategy RPGs..
Most gamers just aren't into numbers, statistics, organization, tactical choices, inventory management, etc. Strategy RPG's tend to have these elements no matter how simple or complicated the game is
It's different than games like Age of Empires or Wolrd of Warcraft or any other RTS/RPG type game. where everything is on a huge scale and you can advanced based on number of men, stockpiles of weapons, crops, gold, land, etc
These games you have to pay attention to how strong a small [sometimes larger] number of characters are, you have to pick and choose which characters have the best abilities, who is best at what role [healing, attacking, magic, or a combination of all three] They require thought, planning, sometimes a whole lot of risk taking...sometimes it all comes down to 1 HP or having the right weapon on..
That's why these games can't be printed like EA games or licensed games...it's not the game itself, it's the whole conventions of the genre
Here is my REAL question though
Why can casual gamers and non gamers get on Madden and memorize entire play books, years of statistics, and analyze dozens and dozens of scenarios that take place in a game, and yet be confused or not understand the logic in an RPG or strategy game?
I've always tried to explain it like that, that a strategy RPG is like two football teams, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, there is a set terrain and there are variable conditions [weather, stamina, morale, etc] that affect a game and it is up to the coach to manage his team and make the right decisions as to what players to use and what attacks to use..
But somehow, unless they're wearing jerseys and helmets, they just don't seem to care.

Looks like Disgaea isn't going down in price anytime on Ebay. Same more people can't play this game. As for me, I bought my copy back when it came out and never opened it because my backlog got too big. And to think the last time it got reprinted I thought that would be the end of it and the demand would go down. I guess the reprints aren't big print runs to meet the demand. But who knows, maybe one day it will become a greatest hits title.
It probably costs them $2.50 to ship the game by first class mail. They've made a killing on the shipping too

nope there goes no vaule for people buying these on ebay cause 99.9% of people buying knew this game Would not have the sticker on them
the 2nd printing didnt have a sticker
the 3rd printing didnt have a sticker
so why would this printing have the sticker.
this is a reprint. Did you really think they just found these lying around after all of these years. this is either the 4th or 5th reprint of this game.
glad i still got my first print still sealed .
I tossed it up on ebay to see if anyone bits at the price for the hell of it. If not it will just go next to my Sealed first print
i already beat the game twice and got over 165 hours into it. that BAAL dude with the 2.6 million hp is the last dude i need to beat : )

My order finally arrived! Apparently it was sent to the wrong address. It came opened up and thankfully, nothing was harmed. I was thinking about who might've gotten it and how they might have reacted to it. They could've been offended by the game as well as shocked to see a cd with a pentagram on it! I'm not sure that I would wanna listen to that thing either... Just glad I got my game!
