(If you haven't been living under a rock for the past two days, you know exactly who I'm talking about)

OK, first of all, I'm not shocked at the comments whatsoever. Bush is the devil, Lucasarts is training all our kids to invade Venezuela, etc...

Here's my question (and it's a legitimate one): With what I heard the last couple of days on CNN about Ahmadinejad getting elected on a platform of reforms, and basically shedding that coat like a bad case of rotgut, I started wondering something:

What the hell has Chavez done in his country? All I hear about in conventional news channels is his paranoia over the US and how much he hates us. What has he done for the people of Venezuela? Basically all I can find is what's on the wiki (which may or not be accurate) that some people like him, others not. He's orchestrated some far-reaching social programs, but are any successful?

Um...just curious, but WTF are you talking about? Who sayd Bush is the Devil and what the hell does Lucasarts have to do with invading Venezuela?

That picture of Kathy Bates almost made me do a spittake on my brand new iMac. For shame.

Chavez, given the oil revenues they bring in, has the potential to do a lot of good for the people of Venezuela (since it's a state-run thing instead of a private enterprise, which tends to be the case on the other side of the globe where we get our oil).

Calling Bush the "devil" gains him no clout in the international community, and the kinds of nations he aligns himself with (Syria and - I think - Sudan, among others) won't get him the popular respect he thinks he deserves. He's surely as much of a military threat to the United States as the Branch Davidians are in 2006; he does, I believe, have the power to crash the oil economy in the US (going back to a post I made earlier about Venezuelan oil being sold strictly through Citgo stations); however, I dunno if that's true, and I don't know if he'd be willing to take such a sharp drop in profit in order to fuck with our economy.

Short story long, I don't know what he's done for the people of Venezuela. You'll post any information you find here, I hope.

Chavez repeatedly called Bush "the devil" in his address to the UN General Assembly and said it "smelled like sulfur" at the podium where Bush had spoken the day before. I'm sure you would also be interested to know he began his speech by holding up the latest book by Noam Chomsky and recommending it to everyone to read, saying it told the true story of the "imperialist" United States.

No idea on LucasArts, but would be fascinated to hear what propaganda has been spewn forth on that one.

As for Venezuela under Chavez and his moves to erode democracy and human rights there, here you go:

Thanks for the link, el. Interesting stuff, and something a lot of people don't see. Some people do embrace him because he comes across as a populist and against disparate wealth inequality. Perhaps he may just be that, but it's clear that those who embrace him are incorrectly making the assumption that "humanitarian" is somehow put into those categories as well. Clearly, that is not the case.

Lord, you should have seen him a little while ago on TV. He brought a little girl with him and sat her on his lap in one of the most contrived photo-ops since Saddam did the same thing many years ago. It was creepy.

Why the hell do these fools think hugging a child softens their image all of a sudden? Even the most prolific of dumbasses can see though that.

I would hardly go to this administration's state dept for the straight story on anything. Even if it is testimony.

That said. Human rights watch has a litany of problems with Chavez.

Chavez could've been a resposible progressive leader but he is turning out the be a knucklehead.

He tends to help people in other countries to make himself look good, rather than helping his own people. I believe he is going to be giving free oil to some of the poorer people in Brooklyn or somewhere in the New York area for the winter.

The guy is a clown in every aspect. Every time he is on television I can't help but laugh.

One source among many to choose from, as you show well with the link you have added.

On another note, Chavez spoke today in Harlem, pledging to supply low-cost fuel to the poor in this country. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) had a press conference in response, saying thanks for the fuel, but don't expect us not to be insulted when you come to our country and insult our president, even if we do have disagreements. Bravo. Chavez speaks in Harlem trying to undermine our elected government while constantly criticizing the U.S. for funding NGOs in Venezuela...hmm, more hypocrisy and propaganda from a Castro-taught fast learner I guess.

I would imagine a devil to be devious, clever, and perhaps intelligent. That doesn't fit at all.

And don't forget that Rangel has made a career extending run by saying the exact same things about Bush for the last 6 years. Not to mention he's the one who INVITED chavez to speak to his own constituency. Rangel's obviously faked outrage rivals the incenserity of Hillary clinton in full hate mode.

In other news, Charles Barron came on MSNBC and started praising Chavez as a humanitarian and a great human being for offering to donate heating oil to the poor citizens of NYC. If I could find a transcript of it, I surely would. After the things I've read about Chavez, this guy is absolutely full of it.

For other stupid things this man has said:
