If it's an optical, why do you need a mouse pad?

I'm a big fan of the FUNC Industries 1030 dual sided (Smooth/Rough) it's at the top section of your price range for a bare one, or you can customize for more. If you want to check them out FUNC.net

If it's an optical, why do you need a mouse pad?

A optical mouse doesn't really mean anything other than it has an optical tracking method. The mouse itself, hasn't really changed too much. There's still friction to worry about, not to mention deterioration feet.

Any regular old mouse pad will suffice. I use this one by Belkin with a wrist pad and it works very nicely and my MX518 glides along just fine. God it from Office Max for $10. You shouldn't need a very fancy mouse pad unless you're an intense gamer... and even then, it's fairly pointless I'm guessing (outside of you mentally telling yourself there's a difference to justify the price).

i was looking at that mouse. It seems the same as the razer diamondback i have, except a different color. I got the "RAZER Mantis Control Mouse Pad"(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817114325) for free from NewEgg. They had a combo bundle deal. Still it was around $48 shipped for both. I honestly don't know if I feel a difference or not.

i forgot the brand, but this one mouse pad i bought a few months back, well for some reason it had a very oily slick feeling to it and guess what? it smelled like rubber tires! :O and to make matters worse, when it got hot in my computer room, the mouse pad started stinking up the room and the smell would rub off on to my wrist and my wrist would smell ... It took me awhile to figure out it was the mouse pad, so I took it out of the room and then that room started stinking up. Returned it a few days later and told the CSR that the smell was the reason for the return and he agreed as he could smell it too.

So before you buy it, smell it! No I am not kidding you.

I like having a dual side so I can use the rough for precise movements (photoshop) since it has some resistance, and smooth for fast action sweeping movements (games)

I bought one of these (http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Sortie-Trojan-Optical-Gaming-Mousepad-Pad-NR-Mouse_W0QQitemZ150033614688QQihZ005QQcategoryZ170Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). I love it! so smooth, and its like only 1mm thick and sticks to your desk. I hated regular mouse pads because if you go too far, your mouse 'drops' off the edge of the pad. none of that with this pad.

fUnc 1030 + HyperGlide mouse skates.

Slides like butter, made any FPS (I came from CAL-M CS 1.6) so much easier on the wrist.
