Thread title is pretty legit though. Using Roman Numerals makes the thread sound that much cooler.

Eternal Champions was the best. The only reason to own a Sega CD was for the version they had on it. Great stuff.

Well, last night I loaded a shitload of fighting games onto my arcade machine... I really only ever played Street Fighter II in the arcade so I'm a bit overwhelmed right now. I actually wish these games had practice modes so I could learn the moves. I've got all the Street Fighters (II and Alphas - no III), versus games (like X-Men vs. Street Fighter), Samuari Shodowns, Art of Fightings, Killer Instincts, Darkstalkers/Vampire Savior, Fatla Furys, etc... I don't even know where to start although Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the most appealing for some reason.

I'd start with Street Fighter Alpha 2 or X-men vs. Street Fighter. Alpha 2 is like SFA3 but a little simpler (and much better, IMO) and X-men vs. Street Fighter is the simplest of the Vs series (although it has a TON of high level gameplay, such as infinites/glitches etc...)

If you want some help w/ either game let me know.

I just got finished watching last week's 1up Show and a couple of the editors were going on and on about how Virtua Fighter 5 looks arcade perfect if not better... god damn... I can't wait for next March. Between VF5 and Hokuto no Ken, I'm going to have no reason to ever do school-related stuff.

I forgot about buying KOF 2006 already... I'm so ridiculously on the fence though since it seems like most people here are saying that there's no depth to it at all. Not having a wealth of depth is fine, but I don't want something that's just a "meh" game to kill a couple hours with.

new thread!

KOF 2006 has eaten up my time. I"m being real anal about getting all fo the alternate costumes. I've already beaten the easy, hard and extra missions, as well as passing the game with every character. all I need to do is finish time attack mode with about 9 characters and to finish up sirvival mode.

armor ralf is the cheapest thing to ever step foot in a video game. that's all I have to say about that.

edit: nice pic Gunm! that certainly surprised me.

And about VF5.

That game was arcade perfect playable at E3! (Playable in a private room but no one was allowed to talk about it) lol.

And yeah it does look so amazing in motion.

How much of an improvement is it over 4?

I never played 4 seriously, but I can definitely see myself devoting a ton of time when the fifth iteration comes out.

From what I'm hearing it's more like 3. It's suprisingly not as popular in Japanese arcades because of this. People liked VF4 Final Tuned better it seems.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection still holds the fighting game crown in Japan based on Arcadia monthly charts.

Changed the title slightly...it has a better ring to it now.

Added the attract mode movie to the OP if you're EC deprived.

And here's a casting call (http://www.defunctgames.com/projects/fakegame003.htm) for EC: The Movie!

Who said that? Game is a pretty good amount of depth, it's still broken, but not to the terrible degree that MI 1 is. KoF 2006 is an awesome game.. there's been posts in the fighting threads reflecting that from people who actually own it.

It's not like Tekken amount of depth but it's not incredibly shallow, either... in alot of ways its exactly like Project Justice minus the team aspects.

I have a friend from Korea and he hates Tekken. But I'm sure it's very popular over there. And most likley the most used character is either Baek or Hwarong. Ya gotta have the one Tae Kwon Do guy in every game.

Tekken and VF are both big in Korea as well. Korea and Japan have something we don't have the luxury of... lots of arcades and 24 hour arcades. Arcades are the big reason why VF is so popular there and meh over here as far as competition goes.

In Korea though you can play arcade games for DIRT cheap.

Sigh, it seems like the arcades these days are dying because of the luxury of playing someone online whilst sitting on your lazyboy. I really favor the arcade environment or at least the head to head tourny scene. Only thing I would gripe about are smelly kids. Don't get me wrong though, I love how convenient the internet has become. I like online play as much as the next guy, but how do I know the other person on the other end isn't a 10 year old boy using game genie? *shakes fist* "Damn you game genie! Damn you!"

RelentlessRolento

I still say the arcade scene will make a huge comback with the original feel once internet speeds don't become such an issue. Playing SFII:HF on XBLA launch really brought back the same exact feelings I got when going to the arcade... i beleive it's a taste of what's to come.

24 hour arcades  I would take that any day over firing up my systems in between study sessions. Playing at the arcade just clears your mind of everything :)

speaking of which, found an arcade on campus....it has Tekken 3. and DDR and that dumb Police Trainer game. and the Simpsons. what a let down.

there's another one that has DDR, pinball, and Area 51.

and I think there are some more machines in a room that's not open right now on account of water damage. from what I hear, there's another DDR machine.

prognosis: sucks ass.

The Mishimas are probably the favorites no matter were you go. But Playmore was, or still is, Korean based. So it's no surprise KOF is popular there. I wonder if they sell Kim-Chee in the arcades?

I remember in KOF 2K2 after SNK's death and Playmore started making the KOF games, Kim gets several new animations. I wonder why?

I sorta have an arcade on campus. It's got KOF XI, Melty Blood, Guilty Gear XX, Soul Calibur, MVC2, and Project Justice. Oh wait, it's my room. In an ironic twist, nobody plays fighting games here save for maybe 2 people (who are terrible.)

At my school, nobody would care about something like that... they would literally go back to playing Goldeneye and Madden 2001. One kid even has an NES. I'm not making fun of poor people, but come on. This school is expensive to go to so you'd think the parents would at least mandate that these kids have some damn sense about what they bring to school.

but yeah, i have a tv hooked up in the dining room with an snes, and the only i've kept in it for the past 6 months is street fighter 2 turbo. i don't make assumptions about people who statements like "i can kick everyone's ass in such and such fighting game" because they could be true or false, but i'm most definitely interested in playing people who find themselves to be really good.

OK, long shot here but I figure that more than a few of you have home arcades running MAME to get your fighter fix.... anyway, I posted this in a separate thread but I don't think it would hurt to ask again here...

I have a Happs Vision Pro VGA/SVGA monitor (http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/491337vp2lg.htm (http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/491337vp2lg.htm)) and when I try to run certain games I get an "out of range" error message. Examples are Tapper (tapper), Popeye (popeye) and Mortal Kombat II (mk2). Is there any way to get these games playable on my monitor? Is there a setting I can input for each game that is doing this so it will run in the proper range of my monitor?

I'm going to try and walk through an example... I am running "mspacman" perfectly with no modifications or special configurations other than specifying the "-ror" command so it rotates 90 degrees. According to MAWS, mspacman runs at a resolution of 224x288 and at a frequency of 60.606060Hz. Everything works perfectly for this game.

However, when I try to run "popeye" I get an "out of range" error message on the monitor. According to MAWS, popeye runs at a resolution of 512x448 and a frequency of 60.000000Hz. How can I instruct my monitor to display this?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. THANKS!!

Oh crap, I forgot to update my location, well, now I go to UCSD and am living in an apartment nearby. But Mira Mesa you say? hmmm, sounds good, I should get the exact location of any GG machines around here, but it's sure to be at least a 15 min drive, or 30 rather, I'm pretty bad at directions.

I was trying to find the guys in san diego, specifically the ones in Oceanside, but I can barely find them, and Oceanside is kinda far away -_-;. But Mira Mesa sounds promising.

You know, the MUGEN "community" is really retarded at times.

http://xgargoyle.mgbr.net/

Is it just me or is it damn hypocritical to say that when they take sprites from other companies games without authorization?

I saw this post in the previous thread, I guess Guile didn't see the new thread yet. Anyways I agree, this is very hypocritical. Plus if they aren't making money off of it I see no problem. I thought MUGEN was a community were people shared sprites, BGs and ideas.

Aren't most mugen character rips copyrighted characters from SNK, Capcom, and etc.? Hmmmmmmm......

Exactly, that's what was so hypocritical about his request of not wanting people to host his creations he did.

However the people that actually convert characters to Mugen and edit the ripped sprites think it's not hypocritical. They seem to justify it by saying they put many hours of work in creating this character and it's considered fan art. They believe they own the code to the edited character sprite. And while I agree and belive credit is due to them, they have to realize MUGEN's base principle is to "create your own fighter by borrowing other people's work." There's always gonna be a-holes that want to steal your work and pass it as thier own, but if you're an active part of the MUGEN community people will know who you are and give you the credit you "think" you deserve. It's better to just shurg it off instead of crying about it.

The old FOTNS was pretty shitty... sorta like a GI Joe with people exploding for no reason. New Fist of the North Star is awesome... though it's kinda a love it or hate it show. There's still a ton of violence, but the storyline is actually legitimate this time around. The sheer testosterone in the show is just disgusting and some of Kenshiro's lines are among the greatest ever spoken.

And the FOTNS game is scheduled to come out on the PS2 in March 2007.

It doesn't surprise me. Hentai/Ecchi artists are just as talented as those who do more traditional art. Ryu's Form site (IIRC) is one that comes to mind. Slightly hentai/ecchi art and traditional art at the same time.

I understand that art/drawings by hentai artists can look better than official ones sometimes, I mean, they're trying to capture some kind of audience. I'm sure stick figures wouldn't sell.... well, there might be exceptions... And, haha, too many times have I used that line "looking for material to use", too many times.

Oh yeah, I got my Guilty Gear Slash today and my component cables. Unfortunately I couldn't play it just yet, my swap didn't come in yet, hopefully tomorrow. I immediately tested the cables out though with GG Isuka, [yes, I know bad choice]. But damn, Component makes a world of a difference and virtually no lag on my HDTV as opposed to 480i. I can't wait until I can actually play Slash. Now, I was wondering, what other 2d fighters can go into progressive scan? [I looked at the Wikipedia list, but it seems like that list is a bit outdated and doesn't really apply to imports]

But I'm sure Zangief really isn't gay either. I doubt they had that in mind when he was created, unlike other characters. Being big and buff might seem a little gay, but I think Zangief counters that sterotype by fighting bears in the wilderness and having a beard with a mohawk. Working in Miami in know a lot of guys that play for the other team. And Zangief doesn't fit the bill to me. He's not "clean-cut" enough to be gay.

i whole heartedly disagree. Benimaru, to me, is like the ultimate ladies man. check out the capcom vs snk series. he tries to hit on every girl he faces. sure he may look like a fruit, but maybe he's just metro. I used ot feel the same way towards him, but now I have more respect for Beni.

now as for Zangief, going by his ending in Capcom fighting Jam/Evolution/ whatever, he's seen daydreaming about being in what appears to be Miami and hanging around at least 2 women and relaxing in a spa. now being a straight man, I find nothing gay about that. that's jsut my two cents on the subject.

now as for the videos MarkMan posted, i think they sf one shows lots of potential. I can't wait to see the second part of this.

How do I get NeoGeo Battle Colliseum, KoFXI and Guilty Gear Slash to run in Prog Scan? Hearing that makes my day.

I thought the only fighters that I had that did it were GG Isuka and Tekken 4/5.
Usually hold both triangle and x as the game boots. Might be different, but this is usually how it is activated. Question, once you put a game in prog scan does it save it in that mode or do you have to do it everytime?

Yes, you hold triangle and x when the game starts up. IIRC, you have to do that every time though because I don't recall seeing the option in the menus anywhere. Hopefully the PS3 will allow you to set PS2 games to always run in PS mode...

There is a list there.

I just got Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1, I'm using a slide tool, the game boots up fine, takes me to the main menu, but when I actually pick a game it goes to a black screen when I can only hear the music and sound. Does anyone know why?

I'm using Swap Magic 3.6, also.

Wow, that's lame as fuck. I appreciate the help, though. Do you know why it may happen?

I'm playing KoF 94 Rebout right now, it's pretty awesome, for some reason the graphics get a bit jaggy when someone gets hit but that's probably because I forgot to turn on progressive scan.

Damn, KoF 94 Rebout looks amazing in progressive scan.

This game is awesome, I'm glad I picked it up during Play Asia's sale. It's got the redone version and the Neo Geo version. The gameplay is a bit old but it's still a hell of alot of fun.

If KoF Neowave has graphics on par to this I'll pick it up when it hits $30 in November.

Zangief's the manly gay man. Kind of like R. Lee Ermey's role in Saving Silverman. Here you go thinking he's playing the same character he's played since Full Metal Jacket and then you find out he's gay about two thirds of the way through the movie. On the other hand, Zangief looks no gayer than any wrestler in the WWF.

ratzombie
10-04-2006, 09:46 PM
But I'm sure Zangief really isn't gay either. I doubt they had that in mind when he was created, unlike other characters. Being big and buff might seem a little gay, but I think Zangief counters that sterotype by fighting bears in the wilderness and having a beard with a mohawk. Working in Miami in know a lot of guys that play for the other team. And Zangief doesn't fit the bill to me. He's not "clean-cut" enough to be gay.

Haha, I know. I was just joking around, because I know you like Zangief.

I don't think Zangief is gay, and I don't think Bridget is gay. But Tingle is sure as fuck homosexual.

Here we go from Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay%2C_lesbian%2C_bisexual%2C_and_transgender_char acters_in_video_and_computer_games#Gay_characters_ in_fighting_games

Many fighting games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_game) have characters who are either confirmed or suspected to be gay. Having gay male characters in these fighting games can challenge the traditional perception of homosexuals as weak sissies. Nevertheless, hints about a particular character's sexual orientation in a fighting game often take the form of effeminate or otherwise sissifed features, in an otherwise tough and stereotypically masculine character.

The Street Fighter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter) character Zangief (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zangief) has long been thought of as being gay, although this was disputed in Capcom Fighting Evolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capcom_Fighting_Evolution), where it was stated that he had a girlfriend (however, this may only indicate that he's bisexual, although the game isn't canon). The Street Fighter character Eagle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_%28Street_Fighter%29), who appears in the original Street Fighter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_%28video_game%29) as well as in Capcom vs. SNK 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNK_vs._series), has however been confirmed to be gay (as a tribute to Queen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_%28band%29) singer Freddie Mercury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury)), although several of Eagle's quotes obviously displaying his orientation were censored in the US version of the game.

In the Guilty Gear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilty_Gear) series, the main character Sol Badguy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Badguy), who is also heavily based on Freddie Mercury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury), is often rumored to be gay; this has been neither disputed nor confirmed, but questioned with his rival Ky Kiske (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky_Kiske) who he is shown to continue to rescue despite their rival status. The character Venom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom), however, is most clearly in love with his deceased leader, Zato-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zato-1), although his feelings do not seem to have been returned.

Being succubi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Succubus), Lilith Aensland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith_Aensland) and Morrigan Aensland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morrigan_Aensland) in Capcom's Darkstalkers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkstalkers) series have been long portrayed as being rather openly bisexual.

An obscure game known as Groove on Fight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Instinct) is currently the only known fighting game featuring an openly gay couple, the somewhat stereotypical characters Rudolph Gartheimer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_Gartheimer) and Damian Shade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damian_Shade).

On a smaller note, after checking the Groove on Fight link, I had no idea Matrimelee was a part of the Power Instinct games.

*EDIT*

Also, from Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benimaru

Benimaru is constantly being accused of being gay by the series' fans despite SNK's assurance that Benimaru is in fact, not. The way Benimaru poses and blows kisses may hint at it, but what fans cite the most is his voicing, despite him shouting his special move names with dedication, it's a winpose where Benimaru can be heard to say "Thank you." with an unmistakable lisp. This was especially apparent in early installments.

It's SNK boss syndrome, the last bosses are usually hard as shit to begin with.

I don't remember who the last boss was for KoF 2001 because I hated that game... IIRC, that was one of the ones SNK sourced out while they were recovering from bankruptcy. I'm just glad SNK came back to do 2003 on up. 2002 was ok, but Eolith really crapped on the series imo.

For a while, it was believed that Eolith (developer of KOF 2001 and 2002) held the copyright for K9999. As it turns out, this is not the case. SNK, however, has expressed public disfavor for K9999, presumably due to the explicitness of his tribute to Tetsuo. It is unlikely he will appear in the future.

It is highly likely that K9999 has been retconned out of KOF canon, as the NESTS plot summary found in KOF 94 Re-Bout completely skips over K9999.

 That was one of the stupidest characters introduced into the world of KoF.

Most people on this site tend to gravitate towards whatever the most popular most recent RPG is.

Right now, it's Valkyrie Profile 2, but next week it will be Tales of the Abyss, and in two weeks, Final Fantasy XII, so basacially it would be serving as a kind of side thread to whatever the main RPG thread is for the flavor of the week.

Also, since RPG games are spoiler heavy, the thread would mostly be filled with spoiler tags, and plot points... it would be alot harder to follow than a fighting game thread since they (fighting games) all have a common theme, RPG's don't.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would be well received but I can't imagine it getting a ton of replies, either that or it'll basacially turn into "Hey guys, XXXX RPG came out this week, let's talk all about it until the newest RPG hits!".

Give it a try, though... the other thing is it might also devolve into a flame war because people are more fanboyish in their love for RPG's than they are for fighting games.

ok, now it's my turn to stray off topic: on a hunch, I was searching for some camila sodi pics and came across a new shoot she did for some fhm type magazine. I would sooo love to get some of these sig'd and avatar'd, would anybody here be willing to help me out? I'm terrible when it comes to things like that. plus it's time for some new sigs/avys!

I'd be willing to help out. Just send the pics in a pm or however you like and I'll see what I can do.

post your impressions... also may you be available for specific questions (thet you can answer at least...)?

I'm kinda mad it isn't going to be $30 on release like godhand, but oh well... I'll get GH and wati for a price drop on MK. Need to save money for Gears of War and DoAX2.

Most important question Markman

If it is the Collector's version, is UMK3 a true perfect port, or at least damn close? Also, could you look at my post from before(first post on page 10) and give me some advice when you get the time?? I know you'll know the answer.

jimfoley16: Yes the actual joystick can be replaced, I've seen a few SFAC sticks with either Sanwa or Seimitsu sticks. Mounting the stick inside may be a bit tricky though because the mounting holes for a HAPP stick and a Japanese stick are different. There are HAPP lollipop sticks but I wouldn't recommend them for fighting games. I'll try to do some more research for you to see if anyone actually posted pictures of the mounting process.

About MK: A. It just came in the mail today, I haven't had a chance to try it. I still have to pick it up from the head honcho. :) But for sure I'll answer any/all questions to my fellow fighting game freaks.

I do remember though at E3 when playing it, the game had some of the same broken stuff from MK: D. While I didn't test a lot of things, BRC's f+3 in weapon stance still granted a free throw and Scorpion still had his weapon f+1 into spear.

Well after realising whats comming out over the weeks, I realize I'm going to have to hold off on some titles but maybe none if I can get some trade-ins to work out well... I know I can get Godhand for about $10 through some deals, so MK may not be so big of a blow to my wallet. Factor in Lumines Live and UMK3 and that's about $25 more... after that I'll have to wait for a price drop on Killzone on PSP and Contact... I needs mys Wii money >_<

Speaking of Street Fighter comics, anyone know if they sell the Trade paperback in non-manga size? I don't want it small...

Also, again (sort-of) speaking of Street Fighter and comics, I won a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 tournament at my local shop tonight. I got a grab bag of promo schwag from Gamestop (a bunch of good stuff actually) and a 25 dollar gift certificate to the comic store. I used the Gift Certificate to get 2 of the Udon studios Street Fighter posters ("World Warrior" and the Sakura door poster). I also picked up the Udon studios Ryu door poster for 12 dollars. Good times!

Best part was in the finals, after the first match of the series (best out of 3), the kid put his controller down and just left. He was so pissed hahaha. I was playing Blackheart and using Sentinel's Ground Type assist. Not a particularly good trap by any means (Blackhearts jump strong kick, air dash, strong kick, land & assist, repeat) but it worked out and apparently really ticked him off. Fun times.

Unfortunately, now I have to wake up for work in 4 hours. And I still haven't freakin ordered my Happ stick/buttons yet!

Perhaps he would've been too similar to a character like Zangief? I'm not really sure, but he did make it into backgrounds in the SFA series. There was some shitty Final Fight fighting game on the Saturn (Revenge I believe) and that might've had Haggar as a playable character... but yeah, he's the one character that constantly gets omitted.

Yea, he is really similar to Zangief, espically in Final Fight 3.

Hmm? I'd say if Haggar was in Street Fighter he'd be more like Balrog mixed with Zangief but a slightly bit faster

Charge moves like Balrog, with some throws like Zangief, but able to pull of more combos due to speed and smaller size.

What consoles is Final Fight 3 available on?

Haggar did make it into Saturday Night Slammasters. In Zangief's story it said his Spinning Clothesline was inspired by Haggar. They pretty much have the same style.

Also, wasn't Haggar suposed to be in that 3D Capcom All-stars game that got canceled a while ago? And thanks for reminding me about Final Fight 3. I'm gonna put that on my want list right now.

unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), it's a lot more cost effective to just bring the manga sized versions over rather than do a regular sized trade nowadays. comics aren't hot sellers as it is, so everybody is doing what they can to minimize costs on niche TPB's.
