I recommend getting screen protectors, I'm pretty careful with mine but I still like having the protection just in case. I didn't bother putting one on the top screen, just the touch screen. I think a good case is a definite, too, don't want the DS getting scratched or dinged up, and being able to carry the system and a few games in your pocket with ease is nice.

For games, I think Mario Kart is a definite if you're a fan of any of the previous MK games. NSMB is another must have. Brain Age is good if you think you'd be at all interested in that kind of thing. I'd get Animal Crossing if you haven't played it for the Gamecube, and again, if that's your kind of thing, cuz that's not a game for everyone. If you're into the whole Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon thing, Lost In Blue is a really fun game. Then, of course, there's the huge amount of cool games coming out this holiday season.

Final Fantasy 3
Elite Beat Agents (US Ouendan)
Yoshi's Island 2
Kirby's Squeek Squad
Contact
Bomberland Touched
Castlevania Potrait of Ruin
Touch Detectives
Children of Mana

There's more, but that's the stuff off the top of my head. For non-compilation stuff on the PSP there's WTF, MGS: Portable Ops, GTA, and Killzone. I'd really like to try and understand how you can consider the four PSP games stronger then the 10+ DS games for the holidays.

What's strong for PSP, aside from MGS: Portable Ops?

For DS, there's FF3 and Yoshi's Island 2, if you're into that kinda thing. I'd say Elite Beat Agents, but the music featured in IGN videos kinda really sucked, whereas Ouendan's music rocked so hard my head exploded.

Get a starter kit, i got a snazzy one that came with a leather carrying case, three stylus' (styli?) car charger, game carrying cases and more! here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/BD-A-Lite-Starter-Kit/dp/B000FOP6KU/sr=8-2/qid=1159500934/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-9501581-1244659?ie=UTF8&s=videogames . As for games, I recommend Mario Kart (great online play) Phoenix Wright (not because it's rare or any of that, it really is a fun game) trauma center (if you like a challenge) Animal Crossing. Any of those games are great, and welcome to the DS club!

Nah, I used to worry about getting screen protectors and protectors for the outer shell for my DS Lite and how much they were gonna cost but I said screw it. I instead only got a Lite and a clothy carrying pouch that you can attach to your pants. If you're just careful at all, you shouldn't have problems scratching the screens.

I guess you may need screen protectors though if you let anyone else play it. I let a bunch of people play my original and now the touch screen's got all these scratches. If only you and people you trust are playing your Lite, I wouldn't worry about these things.

Congrats on the new DS. I just got an Onyx one myself, and I don't care about the fingerprints - its dead sexy.

Essential accessories - some kind of carrying case or sleeve, game cases and a screen protector. I would go for the hori, since its a tried and true solution. Honestly, I doubt you'll scratch the screens from normal usage, but I'd rather be safe about it.

Games:
Phoenix Wright - yes, it's as good as all the hype. I just beat it, and I'm dying for part 2..

Trauma Center - some of the operations are frustratingly hard, but it's such a well-done, clever game, you'll want to keep at it.

The other suggestions given in this thread are great games too. Good luck.

i dont think you need screen protectors, unless youre going to let a little kid use it or something. ive had a fat and a lite with no problems with scratches. just dont go too crazy while using it. sometimes it gets a little waxy film on it from the stylus, but you can clean that up easily.

i'm with the couple posters above... i have a DS Lite and no scratches on the touch screen whatsoever. All it's really needed is a nice microfiber cloth and solution to clean it up every once in a while, but I have one of those for my sunglasses and LCD screen.

As long as you take care of your stuff then you shouldn't be worried.

Although... I do take care of my DS and it did get that damn hinge crack, but so far it seems like it's only a cosmetic blemish.

I put on the Pelican screen protectors and they work great. I can't even tell they're on.

All the good games have been mentioned already, but the ones that stand out for me are Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center.

Screen Protectors, A Case, and Strap is a must have!

The only necessary thing is a case...

I did get a scratch on my screen but it was mostly because I was very rough with it in a puzzle in Trace Memory. But if you're careful you wont get any scratches on it, and why would you need a strap?

Everyone says screen protectors, but I don't use one and my screen is spotless. Unless you use your keys as a stylus, your DS won't end up looking like the display unit at Walmart. I'd say Castlevania, Mario Kart, and New Mario Bros. are the must haves.

Well, the only reason you don't scratch ur ds lite because you have a small library (17 Games....Sucks) and probably u dont spend most of ur time on playing it. I spent most of my playing on my ds and I let other people play my ds also! I had a Polar DS before and it has been dropped and scratch the hell by people who got frustrated with it (who r new to the system)So I suggested the screen protectors and a case. OK, a strap was really not that necessary, but if ur a hard-core or becoming a Hard-core ds gamer, Its A Must!

The only thing you need...are more games! A case isn't necessary unless you bring your DS Lite everywhere with you, I just leave mine in the room. I've had my GBA for a couple years and all I used for a case was the plastic baggy that came in it, same for my DS Lite and both still look brand new. I agree with the others who said a screen protector isn't needed; unless someone goes Hercules on your touch screen it should be fine.

I use my DS every day... 17 games is not a small library, especially since the system came out in 2004 and had little to no games worth owning for a few months.... and its better to have a library of games that you enjoy instead of having 50 DS games and 30 of them that suck ass....I can safely say that all my DS games are great. And having a larger library does not mean you will get scratches on it... if you are careful you can have every DS game released and play it for 24 hours a day and still get no scrathes on the screen. Your logic does not hold up. And I dont let anyone use my DS. Also, you'd have to be an idiot if you get frustrated and purposely scratch the screen because of it.

Nice thread. I just ordered my onyx DS lite today from Amazon. I signed up for the Amazon.com credit card and got $30 bucks off.

So with the free shipping and no tax, I paid $100 for it in total. The key is I have to send in the money early so that I have a zero balance (I don't recomend this if you are not organized- getting another credit card can really bite you in the ass).

Thanks for the tips on getting the case and (maybe) the screen protectors. I didn't even think about this....

Dang, I guess my library of 7 games is considered tiny if 17 is small. Some of us have other things to do with our time, as much as I love my DS...

Screen protectors aren't necessary but it's a nice insurance policy. It's nice to not have to think about scratching the screen, all it takes is the screen having a little dirt on it or pushing down a little too hard to put a scratch on it. I like knowing that the system I spent $130 on isn't going to get the screen scratched for sure. Without the screen protector I'd be excessively worried about making sure it didn't get scratched and to me it's better to just not have to worry about it.
