Congressman resigns after former page questions e-mails
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican from Florida, resigned Friday from the House, a day after a former congressional page questioned e-mails Foley had sent to him.
Foley apparently sent the e-mails in August 2005, when the male page was 16 years old.
"Today I have delivered a letter to the speaker of the House informing him of my decision to resign from the U.S. House of Representatives, effective today. I thank the people of Florida's 16th Congressional District for giving me the opportunity to serve them for the last twelve years; it has been an honor," Foley said in a written statement.
"I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."
In the e-mails, which were obtained by the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Foley discussed a second page, saying "I just emailed [him]... hes such a nice guy... acts much older than his age... hes in great shape... i am just finished riding my bike on a 25 mile journey now heading to the gym... whats school like for you this year?"
Foley then asked the page for a picture.
The young man, who forwarded the e-mails to another congressional staffer, called the e-mails "sick, sick, sick."
"Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously. This freaks me out," the page wrote in the e-mails obtained by CREW.
A spokesman for Foley told CNN the congressman acknowledged he had an e-mail exchange with the former page but flatly denied that it was anything inappropriate.
Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois said he supported Foley's resignation.
"He's done, as of now; he's done the right thing," Hastert said. "I've asked John Shimkus, who is the head of the Page board, to look into this issue regarding Congressman Foley. We want to make sure that all of our pages are safe, and the page system is safe."
"None of us are very happy about it," Hastert said.
Election foe calls for investigation
According to GOP sources, Foley is concerned there may be other potential politically damaging e-mails or information out there and has concluded it's best not to run again for office.
Foley, who is considered a moderate, has been in office for six-terms.
His Democratic opponent in the race, Tim Mahoney, called Thursday for an investigation into the matter. Mahoney's campaign denied having anything to do with the information becoming public.
Foley was part of the Republican leadership, holding the post of deputy whip. He also chaired the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus and was a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.
Before the questions about the e-mails surfaced, Foley was expected to win re-election in November by a wide margin.
The resignation comes within six weeks of the midterm elections in which control of Congress could come down to a handful of seats. The Democrats need 15 seats to end over a decade of Republican control of the House.
Florida Republicans could name a replacement candidate for Foley as soon as Monday. Foley's name will appear on the midterm ballots and cannot be changed, but any votes for Foley will count toward the party's choice.

its ironic that he will possibly be prosecuted by his own laws he created. Also from hearing this on the news, other Congressman heard about this but were afraid to do anything because of this guys power.

like i said... in this world
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maf54: You in your boxers, too?
Teen: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late.
Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.
Another message:
Maf54: What ya wearing?
Teen: tshirt and shorts
Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.
And this one:
Maf54: Do I make you a little horny?
Teen: A little.
Maf54: Cool.
The language gets much more graphic, too graphic to be broadcast, and at one point the congressman appears to be describing Internet sex.
In Congress, Rep. Foley (R-FL) was part of the Republican leadership and the chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children.

The resignation rocked the Capitol, and especially Foley's GOP colleagues, as lawmakers were rushing to adjourn for at least six weeks. House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert.
It was not immediately clear what actions Hastert took. His spokesman had said earlier that the speaker did not know of the sexually charged online exchanges between Foley and the boy.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took the House floor last night to demand an investigation into the Foley matter. But Boehner headed her off, calling on the House to refer the matter to the ethics committee, which the House promptly voted unanimously to do.

It's good to know the Republicans wanted to quietly work from the inside and protect their public image by doing nothing to stop or reprimand Foley. This is shameful beyond words. Way to use your posts, Hastert and Boehner. I always knew West Chester, OH was full of fucking assholes.
Is he gonna go to the big house?
I hope his cellmate says to him, in regards to his standard prison button-up and jeans, "Love to slip them off of you."

I doubt it, because they probably can't prove a crime, even as unbelievably hypocritical and ironic his actions were. But if he did, would he get a tattoo on his forehead? That's the question.

You always hear about Republicans because there's so much pressure to be just the opposite. The more you try to pretend to be one thing, the closer you are to the other.
As far as any charges go, what would he be charged on, and in what jurisdiction? It will probably just quietly go away. It's clear Boehner knew, but it's ambiguous if Hastert knew. Good possibility, but nothing conclusive enough to do anything about.

"They're sick people; they need mental health counseling," Foley said.
that's the fucked up part-- they're not sick in any sense of the word, they just have preferences that the rest of us find especially repulsive. and counseling isn't going to do anything either. they need some kind of deprogramming. Lobotomies?
and they always seem to pop up in the worst places
Anyone care to translate that? Especially the first part.
he's saying for every action there's an equal or opposite reaction, even when it comes to your job, personality, political affiliations, everything. I'm a gamer, but I'm not fucking supermodels yet

This is an outright lie, not to mention an absolutely stupid statement.
And Republicans aren't any more corrupt than Democrats. Maybe you haven't heard of these cases, so take a little break and do some reading:

You did say MOST in your previous comment, but you did contradict yourself. Both parties are corrupt and in need of a serious purge. Between DUIs, striking officials, scandalous underage solicitation...we need to fire the whole bunch. I don't think there is a handful that have actually done anything decent with their terms.

Scandal: Right after Mark Foley was revealed to have had inappropriate e-mail conversations with a 16-year-old page, he resigned and checked into rehab. Now, what did Democrats know, and when did they know it?
Yes, you read that right: the Democrats. It's of course clear that Foley, a Republican representative from Florida, resigned for good cause. We don't defend him or his inexcusable behavior -- good riddance
But it didn't take long at all after Foley's resignation for the Democrats to call for an investigation of the entire Republican leadership in the House, charging that GOP stalwarts knew early on that Foley, as they like to say in the rehab business, had a "problem."
Democrats have begun losing their once-significant lead in the polls, and a mere five weeks remain until the midterm elections. Is this scandal the Democrats' own "October Surprise," meant to throw the GOP into a tailspin shortly before the vote?
Recent polls show Democrats aren't doing very well on several key issues. What better way than a good, old-fashioned sex scandal to get people's minds off such things as the importance of winning the war in Iraq, our ongoing vulnerability to terrorist attack and the necessity of keeping the Bush economic boom going?
As it is, Republicans deny knowing about the explicit text messages that Foley sent to a 16-year-old congressional page back in 2003. In repudiating Foley, House Speaker Dennis Hastert called the messages "vile and repulsive."
Despite this, the immediate take by Democrats and much of the mainstream media was that this was a classic example of Republican hypocrisy -- talking "morals" and "values" while all the time shielding a child predator. But it was nothing of the kind.
If anything, the episode reveals the Democrats' hypocrisy about their own behavior. The fact that Foley resigned virtually within minutes of being told that ABC News had copies of his salacious e-mails and text messages indicates he at least felt shame for his actions. Can the same be said for Democrats?
Sadly, it doesn't seem so. How else can you explain the following?
In 1983, then-Democratic Rep. Gerry Studds of Massachusetts was caught in a similar situation. In his case, Studds had sex with a male teenage page -- something Foley hasn't been charged with.
Did Studds express contrition? Resign? Quite the contrary. He rejected Congress' censure of him and continued to represent his district until his retirement in 1996.
In 1989, Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), also of Massachusetts, admitted he'd lived with Steve Gobie, a male prostitute who ran a gay sex-for-hire ring out of Frank's apartment. Frank, it was later discovered, used his position to fix 33 parking tickets for Gobie.
What happened to Frank? The House voted 408-18 to reprimand him -- a slap on the wrist. Today he's an honored Democratic member of Congress, much in demand as a speaker and "conscience of the party."
In 2001, President Clinton, who had his own intern problem, commuted the prison sentence of Illinois Rep. Mel Reynolds, who had sex with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer and pressured her to lie about it. (Reynolds also was convicted of campaign spending violations.)
You get the idea. Democrats not only seem OK with the kind of behavior for which Foley is charged, but also they protect and excuse it. Only when it's a Republican do they proclaim themselves shocked -- shocked! -- when it comes to light.
We have a lot more questions about this whole affair. The timing of the revelations, as we noted, couldn't be more propitious for the Democrats. Turns out both the Democrats and several newspapers seem to have known about Foley's problem as far back as November, according to research by several enterprising blogs.
Why didn't they come forward then? Who dredged up these e-mails -- and why did they hold them until now? This reeks of political trickery.
We're glad Foley's gone. He betrayed Congress, his party and the trust of the 33 pages who serve in Congress, and their parents. He behaved immorally, and we won't be surprised at new revelations.
That said, if this scandal is the Democrats' answer to their problems at the polls, it's pretty pathetic. It shows a base contempt for the voters.

Exposing the Democrats as hypocrites via making the assumption, in the complete absence of evidence, that some Democrat had to know something about it sometime, or that it was clearly a Democrat setup?
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, those aware of Foley's misgivings for a year at least, five at most, seem to want to deny the on-the-record reality that they were more than aware of Foley's malfeasance before last Friday.
So, the Democrats are responsible for this, despite having zero evidence to support your cause? Talk about your all-time fallacys of affirming the consequent - except this time, you don't even have an affirmation!
How do you feel about the party of "let's amend the most revered document in our nation's history to make sure the queers can't get married ever" trying to defend its prior knowledge of the Foley scandal by saying they didn't want to be accused of gaybashing, as Newt Gingrich told Chris Wallace yesterday?
But, as for the article, the Barney Frank scandal cited there is irrelevant, as it involved cohabiting adults - the rightwing wants to spin this into a "homosexuals are sex-crazed insatiable nutcases" issue, when we're talking about pedophilia, a sexual disorder completely separated from homo, or hetero, sexuality. I discredit its inclusion based on irrelevance. Was it bad? Sure, but in a wholly different way from Foley - no minors were violated, and the worst thing he did was use his resources to rescind several dozen ***parking tickets.*** As they say on the internet, "OH NOES!!!1!!"
Now, I'll see your Gerry Studds, and raise you a Dan Crane. There was across-party-lines cradle-robbing going on in that period, and similarly reprehensible minor treatment of both Studds and Crane. Save your outrage for something that isn't bipartisan criminal activity from the same damn period.
Clinton, eh? Tell me, ol' chap, what happened to Reynolds after his sentence was commuted? Huh? Huh? Did he go to Disneyworld? Did he go to Target and buy a nice sweater? Huh? Huh? I really want to know what happened after Reynolds served the entirety of his sentence for the sex scandal (the commute was on the campaign fund issue, which makes, again, the argument moot). So, I'm waiting with bated breath - tell me, good man, where did Mr. Reynolds go after leaving prison? I'm dying to find out.

schuerm, let me address one more implication of your post (yet another op-ed; have you ever come up with a thought on your own, dude?).
You suggest that Democrats are hypocrites for "breaking" this scandal (though they did not). I made my case above as to why none of the comparisons are valid ones.
Nevertheless, let's make two assumptions that are just dead wrong: (1) the Democrats exposed the Foley scandal, and (2) that they are hypocrites for doing so, given past sex scandals of their own.
So, in short, let's assume that you're completely right in your argument. A significant stretch of the imagination, to be sure, but bear with me.
If the Democrats are responsible, and the Democrats are hypocrites, what do we do with Foley then? Should he not be forced to resign, or should he not face criminal charges (should he be found to have done something illegal, as he, truth be told, hasn't yet)? Would we argue that two wrongs (lenient treatment and party-based coverups) make a right? Should Hastert and Reynolds not face any scrutiny for their part in hiding the truth of Foley's behavior?
In short, shall we continue to perpetuate the notion that Congress is a place exclusively for the corrupt and power-hungry, or would it be preferrable to work, as a participating member of a Democracy, to demand that people that corrupt, and people who place the value of party solidarity and perceptions of strength over the safety of our nation's children, leave office at the least? What, if we assume all you say is true, shall we do to react to the Foley case? Shall we do nothing, or give him a slap on the wrist, because it's "historical precedent?"
Or shall we do what's right?

apparently now he was molested and is gay:
Former Rep. Mark Foley was molested by a clergyman when he was between the ages of 13 and 15, his attorney said Tuesday amid allegations that the congressman exchanged inappropriate e-mails and instant messages with teen congressional pages.
Attorney David Roth said Foley had never had sexual contact with a minor and said any assertion that Foley is a pedophile is "categorically false."
Roth would not release details of the alleged molestation, saying only that making it public "is part of Mark's recovery" and that Foley would discuss it further when he is released from a center where he's being treated for alcoholism and mental issues. It will be at least 30 days before he is discharged, Roth said. (Watch the attorney explain that Foley is not a pedophile -- 2:07 Video)
Roth added that "Mark Foley wants you to know he is a gay man."

Notice something funny about the picture? It's kinda subtle, and escaped me for a moment - I haven't had my coffee yet.
Let's be clear about something: the party that promotes "demanding accountability" has been scrambling around, spending more time looking for a common narrative thread to rest on instead of getting to the heart of the matter. Instead of accepting responsibility for what he did, Foley has now claimed to be a (1) previously molested (2) alcoholic (3) homosexual.
I can't speak to the first two, but if a male adult that molests young girls is not referred to as a "heterosexual," let's not fool ourselves: a male who molests young boys is not a "homosexual." Both are pedophiles, and both are, as a result of their willingness to act on their sexual impusles, repulsively wrong. Some people areuniversally off the sexual roll call in the US: this includes everyone who isn't a consenting adult human. To try to blame this on homosexuality is more absurd than Newt Gingrich's assertion that they didn't come forward earlier because they didn't want to be accused of "gay bashing."

http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=7410
Since the Foley issue is a big deal, and people want answers to these serious questions, I have a modest proposal.
Let’s waterboard Foley, Hastert, Boehner, Reynolds, and all of their aides, as well as anyone else in the GOP leadership. After all, they all voted for it, it is the best way to get answers (really! Dean Barnett said so!), and it isn’t like it is torture.
I support this immediate intelligence gathering operation. The safety of our children hinges on our ability to ‘ask questions.’

In 1983, then-Democratic Rep. Gerry Studds of Massachusetts was caught in a similar situation. In his case, Studds had sex with a male teenage page -- something Foley hasn't been charged with.[/B]
So you don't look more like an idiot...
in 1983 when Gerry Studd (D) was caught in a page sex scandel another Rep. Dan Crane (R ) was also caught with a page. Both were censured by the House, neither resigned. So any moral superiority you are trying to established simply won't fly.
But both of these "gotchas" actually further highlight the problems of the GOP Leadership. When Dems were in charge they actually investigated and censured fellow members for wrong doing. Something today's GOP doesn't do.
Nice try but you failed.

Republican criminality is legion
ABC investigative journalist Brian Ross:
Ross dismissed suggestions by some Republicans that the news was disseminated as part of a smear campaign against Mr. Foley.
“I hate to give up sources, but to the extent that I know the political parties of any of the people who helped us, it would be the same party,” Mr. Ross said, referring to Republicans.
ABC producer Maddy Sauer:
They were passed to a colleague of mine from a source, not someone from a Democratic campaign, a source on the Hill. And when we talked to Foley’s office about those emails, they seemed to know all about them. “It’s no big deal. He is overly friendly. He’s overly engaging. If he’s guilty of anything, that’s all he’s guilty of. He’s very close with the pages. He has worked with the page program for some time.”
So we published that story, and then almost immediately we began receiving emails from former pages, some going back as far as five years, who said this is the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more here.

What makes me sad is that we're commenting more over the fact of what party did what versus the actual act.
That's the absurdity of politics; then again, it's also an indication that it's pretty clear what Foley did was universally frowned upon (to put it lightly).
Like William Jefferson a few months ago, the issue wasn't about his alleged misconduct - $90,000 in the freezer was evidence that something was way wrong. The issue with him ended up becoming about seizure of evidence and police procedure.
I think it's very important to find out who knew what - we know that Hastert and Reynolds (well, Reynolds ain't a congressman anymore, I don't think) knew at *bare minimum* one year ago. I couldn't, in good conscience, vote for anyone witholding that kind of information, or covering it up. This includes the Democrats; I despite "one issue" voters (you'll mostly find that as the pro-life/christian voting bloc), but a politician whose views I supported, if they were involved in a coverup, would not receive my vote. I wouldn't giove it to the other candidate by any means; I probably just wouldn't vote.

Guess who's a liar?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he told House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office about worrisome conduct between former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages more than three years ago, long before officials have acknowledged becoming aware of the issue.
Kirk Fordham made his comments to The Associated Press in an interview as a Kentucky Republican canceled a campaign fundraising event with Hastert. Rep. Ron Lewis said he wants to know the facts behind a scandal that has roiled Republicans since last week.
''I'm taking the speaker's words at face value,'' Lewis said in an interview. ''I have no reason to doubt him. But until this is cleared up, I want to know the facts.
''If anyone in our leadership has done anything wrong, then I will be the first in line to condemn it.''
Taken together, the comments by Fordham and the actions by Lewis added to the political uncertainty surrounding Hastert and fellow Republicans five weeks before midterm elections in which their control of the House will be tested.
Hastert's office did not immediately respond to either development.

ABC ONLINE GLITCH LEADS TO IDENTITY OF FOLEY ACCUSER
FEATURED IM EXCHANGE WAS WITH 18 YEAR OLD
Wed Oct 04 2006 20:32:06 ET
A posting on ABCNEWS.COM of an unredacted instant message sessions between Rep. Mark Foley and a former congressional page has exposed the identity of the now 21 year-old accuser.
The website PASSIONATE AMERICA detailed the startling exposure late Wednesday.
ABCNEWS said in a statement: "We go to great lengths to prevent the names of alleged sex crime victims from being revealed. On Friday there was a very brief technical glitch on our site which was overridden immediately. It is possible that during that very brief interval a screen name could have been captured. Reviews of the site since then show no unredacted screen names."
SEX CHAT WAS WITH 18 YEAR OLD
On Tuesday ABC news released a high-impact instant message exchange between Foley and, as ABC explained, a young man "under the age of 18."
ABC headlined the story: "New Foley Instant Messages; Had Internet Sex While Awaiting House Vote"
But upon reviewing the records, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, the young man was in fact over the age of 18 at the time of the exchange.
A network source explains, messages with the young man and disgraced former Congressman Foley took place before and after the 18th birthday.

OK, so if the kid was a legal adult (and who knows what jurisdiction we're dealing with anyways), he resigned because he's gay and had an extramarital affair.
I want to see reaction to this here (if it's true), so I can see who is critical because he was a minor, and who is critical because he wanted to get with an 18yo man.
And if it is true that he was of legal age regardless of jurisdiction, does Hastert knowing three years ago mattered above and beyond the fact he lied to the public?

Foley has always been single. No extramarital nothin' here. He, if we assume this to be true, resigned because he was outed as being a gay man.

According to two people close to former congressional page Jordan Edmund, the now famous lurid AOL Instant Message exchanges that led to the resignation of Mark Foley were part of an online prank that by mistake got into the hands of enemy political operatives, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.
According to one Oklahoma source who knows the former page very well, Edmund, a conservative Republican, goaded Foley to type embarrassing comments that were then shared with a small group of young Hill politicos. The prank went awry when the saved IM sessions got into the hands of political operatives favorable to Democrats. This source, an ally of Edmund, also adamantly proclaims that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund.
The news come on the heels that former FBI Chief Louis Freeh has been named to investigate the mess.

it's good to know who the people are here, who would be OK with a full grown man seducing their 17/18 year old son.
seeing lots of excuses being made and a lot of pedophile defending
i also find it endlessly amusing when someone posts/links to drudge as if it's an actual news source

another interesting note to consider
Report: Pages nervous around Foley in '95
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A former U.S. House of Representatives page said coworkers were uneasy about former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's behavior in his congressional freshman year in 1995.
"Mark Foley knew that he could get away with this type of behavior with male pages because he was a congressman," said Beck-Heyman. "But many people on Capitol Hill," including many Republican staff members, "have known for over 11 years about what was going on and chose to do nothing."

Hmmmm... 95?!? ELEVEN YEARS?! That means the Republican leadership knew about Foley DURING Ken Starr's failed attempt to bring down President Clinton for having an extramarital affair.
Hypocrisy without end.

If the kid is 18, he can do whatever he chooses. Most conservative families would disown the kid anyways, so what does it matter?
And for God's sake, show some proper use of formatting.

If your going to post something, you might want to not edit out that there might be a conflict of interest in what the person is saying.
Beck-Heyman is a graduate student in clinical psychology at George Washington University and told the Post he was Republican but now works with the Democrats

what is the point of even posting? Everything to you that doesn't support your side is automatically false, everything that does is automatically true. If you can't even see there might be a conflict of interest in her statement then why should i even bother with anything you say?

Now three more pages have accused Foley per MSNBC. Republicans blaming Democrats and ABC can stick it up their ass. Blaming others instead of taking the blame for something that YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IS WEAK. I hope Hastert loses.

One would figure, considering the fact that you're so vocal around these parts of the internet, that you would at least make an attempt of not making yourself such an easy target.

haha I can't believe Republicans are now actually blaming Clinton for this. First they blamed democrats, then more specifically George Soros, and now Bill Clinton for this Foley scandel.
Also on Fox News Hannity keep claiming that there are no evidence that any other republican knew about this eariler -- despite what many republicans who came forward recently said. Yet he keep stating that it was the Democrats and George Soros who knew about this eariler despite all the existing facts. This is fox's spin at its best since stating Foley as a Democrat.
