View Full Version : Forum pruning this week

In an effort to keep the database more managable, and improve site performance, I'm going to be deleting some old threads.
I think I will start with the CAG Trading forum and Off Topic forums.

I'll probably use the criteria of any thread created more than a year ago that has not received a reply in a year. If you want to save any such thread, I'd recommend posting a reply in it soon.

Thanks!

If you have any special requests (for closed threads that you don't want to die), perhaps I can honor them.
Please post a link.

I'd recommend going through all forums and flushing out all threads older than a year. VGD forum especially, since any deal over a year old isn't likely valid anymore.

Asking for threads to be preserved will only hamstring working on cleaning out the database, since numerous useless threads will be kept alive with someone posting in them. It should be an across-the-board cleaning for anything older than a year, no exceptions. Anything of real importance in that timeframe should be moved into the Wiki.

I guess you just write a summary of it.
If you can save a few specific threads and trash the rest, I don't see the point in taking the time to write a summary about it. Not only that, but half the fun is in actually reading the thread as a whole, unabridged.

Maybe you can make an area on the forums for the old threads that you're keeping. Lock them all and they'll have their own section in the forums... I guess similar to the Deal Graveyard forum in the Deal Discussion/Bragging Rights forum.

That's a good idea. That problem is all those old threads take up server space and lag the whole thing down, especially if you're doing a search.

That problem is all those old threads take up server space and lag the whole thing down, especially if you're doing a search. I guess it depends on the ratio of "to be saved threads" to "to be deleted threads". If theres 10000 to be trashed and 50 saved, it might not hurt performance that much.

If you can explain to me how saving 100 threads out of 30,000 would have a significant adverse effect on the site's performance, then I'll rescind my request for saving them.

You beat me to it with that post. You pretty much said everything I was going to say. If there is no response for a year then it should be gone.

Now sure if its a option with some db optimization you could probably just leave everything as is, unless actually disk space is becoming a issue. My guess is there probably isn't alot of maint. done on the db in general and setting up a few monthly routines could go a long way. You could run a trace on the duration of the queries to see if any are taking to long, plus you could use indexing and consider spliting the data file for better performance. I am sure there is a least one MySQL expert on here who might be able to help, all my time is spent in SQL Server and Oracle...

I'm curious, these people that want to save old threads, how often are you going back and reading them? Or are you just bitching for no apparent reason and never would have thought of this or cared if Cheapy just wiped out old threads and didn't tell anyone?

This seems to fall under the category of "I want to keep old threads for the one day 5 years into the future I want to read them".

I'd rather have CAG running faster (to get deal faster) and letting Cheapy and crew do the maintence they need to do then preserve a bunch of old threads no one is reading.

evilmax17
10-05-2006, 12:07 PM
I don't think its unreasonable to want to save a few old threads for historical purposes. Cheapy went about it in the exact right way, saying he was going to delete old threads, and asking people if they wanted anything saved. People have asked for less than 20 threads to be saved, are those 20 threads being deleted REALLY going to make CAG run THAT much faster?

To those saying summarize it in the wiki, that defeats the whole point. Imagine if somebody summarized the Bible in wiki form, and then burned all of the original transcripts. "God talks to a bunch of people, and some stuff happens." Doesn't have quite the same effect does it?

As I said, I don't see what's so unreasonable with how Cheapy originally went about this. At all. People should be posting the names of the threads in their posts, to make it easier to see as he goes through them. If he wanted to just do a full purge, he could easily create a temp forum to place the saved threads, and then just move them back.

Also, there are some really good threads that have been locked. You can't respond to a locked thread, which is why many of them won't have responses for over a year. That doesn't make them less worthy of saving.

I read through some of my old favorite threads about once a month. Like I said, it's a historical thing. Saving ~50 threads after all is said and done won't affect much of anything performance wise.

All people have to do is go up File-Save As and they save whatever pages they want themselves. It doesn't matter to me either way though.

I think we should keep all the Youtube threads.

Also, there are 8 million threads about the DS screen protectors that need to be deleted. I should sign up for the wiki and condense all the information about that there...

(was that cliche enough?)

To serious issues, I had made a suggestion in the stickie thread about combining deal threads, so there is only one Uber thread per store(s), rather than one thread per week. As old sales go out, update the OP and keep on top of deleting posts of no real value or no longer relevent. The OP would naturally have current sales listed, and then next weeks promotions.

The sticky issue had me thinking that a few things could be streamlined (in the deals forums at least) as a sort of preventative maintenance for server related issues.

The dude who is bumping all the collection threads in the sub forums, most which died a year or more ago and only reached two pages at most - give me a break.

These threads will get saved from pruning only to die again and rot for another two years.

FYI, I've deleted a bunch of old threads, but only ones that have had 10 or less replies. There were so many! I'll probably do some similar type pruning in the near future, but it doesn't look like I'll need to do anything too heavy.

One of these days, I would like to rebuild the search index too.
