I have taken it upon myself, with the approval of his Cheapness, to create this thread. What this will be essentially is place for me to ramble between CAGcasts. To get things off my chest before I forget and even flag important things for upcoming shows. If anything it may give some insight to what goes on in the space between shows and that it really isn’t just a one-hour a week hobby.
This is comes as a direct effect of the WLA, despite its detractors, if other people honestly believe that there is some legitimacy to what Cheapy and I are doing, then its about time I started to do something about it. I love the show too much to not a make a credible attempt at making it something I can actually do to earn a living. So I have devised a plan, right now it is more of a mission statement:
To be a professional Videogame journalist before my 30th birthday.
I have decided to let the CAG community join me for the ride of either my success or ultimate and crushing failure.
Either way it should make for some good entertainment value. Of course along the way I will post some videogame reviews and other musings.
Also Cheapy wanted me to mention that if there is enough interest, he will create a dedicated Subforum for the Journal, which would be pretty nifty.

so what defines professional?
print mags?
online?
G4?
but hey as a wiseman in an arcade once told me" Nobody Blink! GO FOR BROKE!"
good luck man, I'll watch this spot, and maybe when you go pro, maybe you'll pass on some of those free games to us little people.

ANy of the three would work, basically being able to do CAGcast related things fulltime and not have another job. Sounds crazy but it could happen. Trust me no one would be happier to give away free games than me, I just need to get to that place.
On a side note I just scored the videogame account at my new workplace, maybe all this stored knowledge will pay off here too.

Journalist sounds awesome. I remember your argument about them a few CAGcasts ago. Hope you make it to the top and revolutionize the professional video game journalism field. And please don't go the path of G4, they all sold their souls to the devil.

Again its all about how to get someone with no writing background and a new full time job (that I will admit I almost enjoy) that is very difficult, a way to get paid as a real journalist so I can focus my time on the CAGcast and Marketing it. Its very frustrating to have a real goal sometimes, ;)

You will not be able to compete with my CAGazine. We will have triple the puns and a built-in search engine so that I can find out who "Bill Simmons" is.
So this is an "open" thread where us regular shmucks can flame mock laugh at provide feedback for Wombat's ranting feeble attempts at journalism narcissistic rambling thoughts and musings?

I never said I was a Yankee fan just that I was looking forward to watching the playoff game, so pffft. I'm listening to the show now, this being the first episode where we will know our listener numbers I am alittle apprehensive in finding out, the fact that cheapy has been idle for a half hour doesnt help either.

I'd be interested to know how appropriate the ad is to the Cast content. If it's EB plugging a sale (that we knew about 6 months before it hit), then I don't have any trouble sitting through that for 15 seconds if it helps you guys out a bit. But if it's stupid crap like a new flavor of Rice-a-Roni before the CAGcast starts, that would be a bit more obnoxious in my book.
That being said, I'm so desensitized to commercials anymore that the only ones I've paid attention to in about 3 years are ones that are supposedly funny or cool on YouTube. So, whatever. I'll just block it out anyway. ;)

Yeah, same here, all those ads I usually see before streaming media go through one ear and out the other. Unless it's CAG related/benefitting, it'd prolly be an annoyance. But then again, I can last 15 seconds of ignoring. So i dunno.

sorry for the lack of updates, I had a long weekend with the Mrs. out of town and the baseball games and the dog, etc. Something about the baseballs playoffs sucks me in every year even when its not my team, but when the Mets are winning its even better. I was playing fetch with dog during both Mets rallys on Saturday, so its seems my Dog will be getting alot of exercise the longer the Mets stay in it. Yes I do believe the 2 things are connected.

Heres my big idea of the day, inspired by South Park and having never played an MMORPG ever, I thought it would be interesting to pick one up and see if something I can get into, my plan is to see if its too late for someone to start in on an established MMORPG. Who knows maybe it will be fun and I will never speak of console games again, but I doubt that will happen.

I gotta say wombat, with the type of personality you seem to have *cough* 200 hours on Oblivion *cough* picking World of Warcraft, or any MMO could be a bad thing. You could end up getting majorly hooked. Seriously you will have the most fun you have ever had playing it, but your life will be gone. You will look back in a few years and honestly wonder if the 100s of days of playing time on a single game was really worth it. Damn you EQ!!!!! I want my highschool years back. However, if you do decide to play Warcraft, play on the PvE server Greymane. I could give you some starting gold and stuff.
Keep up the updates on the journal as well. I would love to learn a little bit more about how the cagcast comes about every week. Oh and lets go Tigers! Maybe the Mets and Tigers will meet in the series.

MMO
I think its nigh impossible to seriously play an mmo if you have a job and other responsibilities.
I think you playing an MMO could lead to a break up with you and Mrs. Wombat.
A few questions
A) Are you a met fan? If so you rule. Im going to game one of the NLCS tommorow nite. I went to game 1 and 2 of the NLDS.
B) How old are you? I know your goal is to make money in videogames by the age of 30 but, if your going to be 30 soon the goal might be unrealistic and you may not be giving yourself enough of an opportunity.
C) Would you take a paycut to work in the industry? And if so what would be teh cut off? `10%, 15%???
D) What part of the City do you work in? I personally work on wall street right next to the stock exchange. I am a civil litigation attorney.
e) Is cag planning any events for the ps3/wii launch like a CAG meetup at a store to lineup before launch.
...I think I gave you enough stuff to talk about for now.
Good luck on the new job. We are all glad your not sniffing milk any longer. That's not a way to live dammit!

When the idea of the Wombat Liberation Army was initially conceived in a secret underground lair, with the air hanging thick with cigarette smoke with a tinge of gun powder and empty beer bottles littering the floor, pie charts covering the walls like bruises, and ideas cutting out of mouths like bullets and the slackened jaws and half-closed eyes, I never imagined it would go over quite as well as it has.

I really should be better at updating this, but I have been playing to much WoW, yes it runs and smoothly too. I have lots to say about it, more good than bad so far, which surprises me probably more than you.
What is really interesting is how long its been since I played a PC game, not that i have any intention on leaving the world of consoles, but there is something to be said about having the ability to watch football and play a Fantasy Based MMORPG at the same time. Hearing "touchdown Jets" and "you have reached Level 8" at the same time is really more excitment than I should be allowed at a single instance.

funny, maybe I'll do a search next time, ahh who are we kidding, and for the record I do not think that Nintendo sees this a second choice, and they think the strongly believe that it will be the first choice for many people. I do think they are smart enough to know that its not everyones first choice, no system is but if the last gen taught us aything its that there is room for more than one console in people lives, so why not be the second choice for those gamers.
halu102
10-23-2006, 04:29 AM
I can see that Wombat, but the main difference this next gen is the pricing of the consoles. I'm sure that many people, especially those that don't consider themselves true gamers will take more consideration when buying their system, because they might be strapped for cash and could only afford maybe only one console. I'm sure anyone would be more careful when making $400-$600 investments, but then again, I'm not sure on how much money people make these days. I just don't know anymore about this "next-gen" gaming anymore. For me it doesn't really feel like a real "next-generation" of video games. The last time I felt a true dawning of next-gen gaming was probably back when n64 and playstation were out [though this could be because I was a wee lad]. It's just I have a feeling that these systems are just simple iterations in the line of consoles. But I guess we'll see how it turns out later this year.
Well, I say get ready to pick your favorite child.

Well, it's been along time since my last real post here and I’d like to say I have a good reason, but I don’t. Hopefully you will forgive me and we can move on.
We cool?
Good.
As many of you know, last night I was at a 360 event in downtown NYC and it was good time. Most of the gaming specifics I will discuss on tonight’s CAGcast , but I thought I would use this space to discuss my feelings on the whole thing. There is no doubt this event was held to curry favor with the press and that’s cool; every company does it and needs to do it. What did surprise me was how nonchalant the media can be. I know there are some very nice people who work in video game media and this isn’t a dig (especially to those that have nice things to say about Cheapy - we love you), but there were a lot of other press outlets there who spent 90% of their time at the bar drinking free beer, hitting play on their recorders when someone said something interesting (ala Peter Moore’s Big News), and then going back to drinking until they were kicked out or asked to pay.
Now I’ll admit, I am a novice and walk around an event like this in wide-eyed wonder of 15 huge plasma TV’s and thumping techno and fried chicken on a stick, but I was also excited to be there for what it is: a chance to see and play games, so that other people who share my interest can learn more about it. This may shock you, but I prefer having the ability to do that more than getting free stuff. It's part altruistic, part selfish too; I like being the guy in-the-know, and that doesn’t make me a bad person - not if everyone wins and If have a genuine interest.
Specifically, I was sitting at a table with two journalists. I won’t name them or say what they write for, but I will say they were not gaming publications and I asked them what they thought of the event and the 360. I was there alone and trying to make friends, to which I got nothing but cold indifference about the system mostly. “Yeah, its alright, I don’t really know too much about this stuff.” I don’t know, it just kind of made me mad. I know at least a few hundred registered CAG’s who would have traded places with that journalist in a second and probably write a better article. Maybe this will be the kick in the butt I need to make this a reality, if not for me (although me is good), but for you too, because for future events, maybe they won't invite a guy like that over a guy like me.
End Rant
Sounds kind of a event that went in the wrong direction. They should have had a better invite list. Did you happen to get any pictures from the event?

Pictures would have been smart, and thats why I left my camera at home like an ass. Live and learn I guess, although there wasn't too much eye candy other than, lots of big TV all over the place and not enough places to sit. Don't get me wrong they did a great job, kudos to the PR team that set it up, it could not have been easy.

I am sick and tired of seeing sites like Joystiq and QJ.net consistently encroach upon our territory. This is worse than other deal sites stealing our content since this sites are pretending to be "journalism" blogs. I have complained time and again to no avail, so I am asking for your help. It is time the WLA step out of the shadows.

Born and Raised in New York, "Wombat" has eight years experience working behind the scenes in the world of entertainment and advertising. An avid gamer since the age of 10, he has owned at least fifteen video-game consoles since 1987. He considers the CAGcast the cumulative achievement of this experience and the closest thing he has done to actually making use of his BA in Film Studies from University of Pittsburgh. He takes great pride in having successfully completed every Legend of Zelda game for every major console and his secret shame is that he has never finished a Final Fantasy game.

A few things for today:
Some Gears of War thoughts:
Please check with people before you just invite them to play co-op, If you are further along then I am in the game please send a message, I do not want to see spoilers,
“I am on chapter 4, wanna play?”
I will be sure to do the same.
What this really leads up to is the fact that we need to have written rules of Xbox Live and maybe soon enough all online console gaming etiquette.
1. With rule number one being it is always ok to decline an invitation without feeling the need to give reason, it doesn’t mean you don’t like the person inviting you, it just means you are happy playing alone.
2. If you see that someone is playing co-op with someone else, don’t invite them to play co-op with you, that’s like going in to restaurant seeing someone on a date and then asking them to go to dinner.
3. And the last one for now if you are invited to a game, don’t start inviting all your friends to that game without asking the host first, he/she may have some invites out and its just polite.
With that being said let me say that I really like the GOW online multiplayer, the maps are small and with teams of no more than 4 it really does heighten the tension. It also keeps the games surprisingly unpredictable until the match is over; the idea of one player taking out four others isn’t shocking or uncommon, so in GOW multiplayer, rounds really aren’t over until they are over. Just watching your last surviving teammate on the spectator cam hiding like Rambo in First Blood can be thrill to watch.
Ok now the CAGcast promised Wombat’s Burrow segment.
Why are achievement badges so much nicer than gamer pics? And why I can’t they be used as gamer pics. Now I am not saying that all badges should be usable as free gamer pics, but how about some of the more ridiculous ones for the real crazy achievements that are out there like:
Survived 1,000,000
Earn 1,000,000 points without dying from Geometry Wars.
Let us show them off to everyone. Is it so much to ask that every game have at least one free gamer pic included, complete the game get to use that achievement badge as a pic. Personally I think it would sell more games and last time I looked 60 bucks was more than 80 gamer points.
60 bucks is still more than 80 gamer points…right?
(please forgive any bad grammar ;) )

Ohhh... I see it now, it was kind of hidden in the post there ;) Rule Number One was like three rules combined into a giant super rule.
What I really wish they would do would be to send a reason why you're declining the invite... just a list of pre-packaged responses:
- Sorry, I can't play, I'm doing single player
- Sorry, I don't have the time to play right now
- Sorry, I'm currently involved in another game at the moment
Things like that. I feel so bad declining an invite because it makes me feel like an asshole because it dosen't give a reason.

I always thought that Achievement badges were the modern-day equivalent of those Activision patches from the Atari 2600 era, so making (at least some of) them 'wearable' in the form of gamerpics would be a perfect application.
Things like that. I feel so bad declining an invite because it makes me feel like an asshole because it dosen't give a reason.
But that's not on you, the invitee. That's on the inviter to gracefully accept your declining their request, without getting caught up in the possible reason(s) and taking it personally. I ask the impossible, I know.
Hey, it's not like you're telling them "I've got to dry my hair tonight...again"!

Dear Wii've,
Selling it to friend without making a profit is very nice thing to do, if you won't regret it after he tells you how much fun he is having and you still do not have one. Keeping for yourself may be the selfish approach if you think Mrs. Dilemma wants one, you also run into the problem of "what if she bought one for you", then you may the makings of an O.Henry story on your hands. I say be honest with your wife, if she wants it give it to her as an early gift and then it can be Christmas full of Wii stuff for both of you.

Since there is no show this week, I think I will make a real effort to add to this thread throughout the week, the fact that I'm just not ready to go back to work after the long weekend would be another reason.
Some updated impressions on the Wii:
Now that I have had a chance to really play it, I will say that it is a great machine. Mii's and the Mii trading system are a hoot, harmless fun that if anyone tells you they don't like is a mean spirited bastard.
LOZ:TP great game. love the game. may still be to early to say but part of me likes Wind Waker better, may be more of personal preference thing. I just feel like there is too much time spent in-between dungeons and alot of the time spent is a chore, collecting tears is a snooze-fest, the wolf is too. On the flip side the dungeons in the game are the best of series and make the trip worth it. Also the controls do grow on you and feel natural after awhile, but it took me sometime. I wish I had component cables, I feel like I am missing out by not having them.
I popped MUA for the 360 back in over the weekend as well, having not played it for about a month. I really like that game, it holds up well on a second playing with new characters. That game is far from perfect, but it really is everything I expected it to be, so I can't say I am disappointed with it, in fact it may be one of my fav games of the year, but we will probably get to that list next week.

This Zelda is way better then the windwaker. You'll see tons of going around collecting stuff and doing side quest later on in the game. It really just takes a while untill all that stuff comes together. I do have to say the Component cables really does a world of wonders for the Tv and I really hope you get them soon so you can see the difference.

I kinda agree with Wombat. I love the graphics (ya it's no 360/PS3... whatever) but more so the artistic style of the game much more than WW. The Wolf part of the game is good in theory... awful in practice. I despise going places when I know I'll have to transform again.

OK so here is the plan I will stick to my daily updates until the next show, and I will continue my now internal struggle with LOZ:TP. Why the struggle, I love the game its a great game, yet it doesn't feel as epic as I would have liked it to be. It feels very much like Ocarina, maybe alittle too much, would new characters have been a bad idea? I love main theme of Zelda, but do all the other themes need to be same songs from 10 years ago? And hairy nippled Gorons are just gross and unnecessary.
And now some good; the puzzles are really amazing, they put alot of thought into the level design of the dungeons and I cannot praise them enough.
Hopefully I will get a chance to play more tonight, my goal is to have a running Zelda diary that when complete may serve as first ever real-time review of a videogame

Although I am not even as far along as you, Wombat, I am also pretty split on the controller's use in this game as well. At least I was until I reached a slothful nirvana. I realized as I was laying flat on my back on my couch, cord draped across my body and each half of the controller at each side that I had never been so comfortable while playing a video game in my life. What is often touted as an active control scheme for games such as Wii Sports has become the ultimate lazy-man's dream controller for myself. Now, to just find a way to minimize all of that twitching to swing Link's sword...

Dude, downsized? Didn't you just get that job like two months ago? Why'd they even bother wasting your time on a position that was slated to be axed? Or (much less likely) did it come as some cloud-parting revelation to them that they didn't want/need the position any more? Corporate America is bullshit.

My wife tolerated my being unemployed for eight months (though in fairness it was because she took a job in another city, forcing us to move and leave my previous job), but by the end of it she was ready to put a pillow over my face. At that point, I don't think I would have stopped her.

I don't like to hear things like this , with Christmas right around the corner .
I wish you the best of luck , in finding your dreamjob .
If it's any consolation I was fired on Dec. 12 1995 . From a job I was at for 4 years .
I had already charged my X-mas gifts that I intended to pay off , with my bonus [that I expected to receive that week] .
To make it almost worse , I was rallying the employees for a collection , for the boss's X-mas gift . I'm glad that gift was never purchased .
Man, that's horrible--hope I didn't sound facetious in my last post, as I was just curious to know what was happening with the daily journals this week. Sorry to hear about the downsizing; if the company has the gall to do this during the holidays, maybe it wasn't the best place to be employed anyway. Best of luck to you. Based on what I've read and heard from you, I'm sure you'll find something new straight away.

I am still feeling mixed but alot better than I was and plan on doing a show tonight, from what I can tell it should be fun and full of surprises.

Well one small update. I am officially Unemployed until Jan 2nd (when my new, new job starts) and lets all hope this is the good one. I will be fine for money as I made one big sale right before I said good bye. So all in all things seemed to have worked out, for now. Oh and this stomach Virus isnt all gone yet, so at least I get to rest up.

the stomach flu sucks. just eat "light" food until your stomach can handle it and make sure to drink gatorade or pedialite since they replace the electrolytes you lose from vomitting.
g'luck on the new job.

I'm sure you know this by now, but try to avoid anything (beverages especially) with a lot of sugar in it. Your stomach won't react well. Also, avoid things that stain. Many years ago, I was taking care of a girlfriend with this affliction and I gave her some cherry Kool-Aid, breaking both rules. I don't think she ever got the stain out of her carpet.

Get well soon, comrade! We need to get you back in the ring, throwin' down instead of throwin' up.
Also, beware of anybody who has a honking bronchial cough... I got laid out hard with that crap a week ago and still have remnants of the cough. There's some seriously virulent stuff out there this cold and flu season.

I got a flu shot 6 weeks ago and so far that and Emergen-C have kept me from seeing so much as a sniffle despite everyone in the cubicles around me coming down with all manner of plagues.

I highly recommend Cold-Eeze zinc losanges. Those things are awesome. Take one right when you feel the first twinge of a cold and it'll knock it out of you. They keep me pretty healthy, except for the annual cold and flu season plague.

Also she wants to know how much time you might have wasted back tracking to get money in the game to progress further along to buy health to beat some of the harder parts in the game?

well, I am bumping this too, as I tend to always bump this thread when I decide I need a new job. Anyhoo I am off to the Madden launch in about 5 minutes and just wanted to vent for a minute that I need a better job so people can tell me how I need serious mental help. I will try to post any good madden dirt when I get back, if there is any. Hopefully when I get home I will be able to play the Bioshock demo. At least I have my priorities straight.
ZOMG, this thread lives! Sort of.

Do you ever worry your boss or someone else at your company listens to the CAGcast or browses the forums? I'd think publicly advertising your dissatisfaction with your job on the Internets is a good way to lose it.
Of course, with Mrs. Wombat's new salary, you may not have to worry about that too much. ;)

Looking back, I only remember the good points, but there was a reason I left. They are still people I talk too regularly and they were all at my wedding, so they may be helpful but I wouldn't go back.

I know how that is. I miss several aspects of the job I had before this one. But if I went back, it wouldn't be the same. All of the people I most enjoyed working with moved on around the same time I did, and even if they hadn't, it still wouldn't be the same. Even if nothing else changes, you do.
To quote Heraclitus, by way of Disney's Pocahontas, "You can't step in the same river twice."

Of all the jobs I had I hated my last one the most. I used to work for KFC and then went to a tech support Job supporitng Sidekicks & Blackberries making double as much and more. So I definitely do not miss my old job or the poeple working there cause they were all A-Holes. To this day I can not eat KFC *shakes* and that was 3 years ago. I think Wombat is safe for his Boss not to read his stuff here because I am very sure that his real name is not Wombat lol..... would be funny though if it was.

I went through this once or twice. There was a pre-interview, and then sometimes even a pre- pre-interview, where they'd ask a few questions by e-mail, THEN call and do an informal (but not really) interview, and THEN call you in to actually talk to real live people. And after all that I decided they were assholes and I would happily take less money to work elsewhere...which I did.

You sound nice enough and you have a great sense of humor. And from the few podcast I've heard you do have the industry knowledge so I bid you luck. In the event that you do get what you're looking for (pockets full of cash) don't ever forget where you came from and get cocky. There's an old Chinese saying that goes "man with hands in pocket, feels cocky" (feel free to use Chinese accent when reading this, it helps).

I would like to make a few comic recommendations.
The Ron Marz run of Witchblade is really really good. Not just a TNA book anymore good story and the First Born is great so far.
Also, I can't believe you aren't reading the Sinestro Corps attack. This is a Green Lantern story at its best. The entire corps being attacked on galactic scale with implications for the whole multiverse.

Practice for my new blog (bare with me)
Team Fortress 2; or how I learned to stop worrying and love the Medic
So, this weekend I spent a majority of my time playing Team Fortress 2, and I learned a few things not only about myself but human nature in general. I also learned that Valve needs to fix the lag issues ASAP. Any room over 8 people is like playing in a room full of gelatin dessert, hmmm ideas for Portal 2. Dedicated servers maybe, please.
Fixable problems aside, this is a game that values teamwork and tough decision making. Like ordering in a restaurant, you make your decision and that’s what you get. You can’t pick up someone’s leftover steak just because it’s more powerful than your chicken. That to me is what makes this game so unique, no running around looking for that super weapon in the middle of the board. If I am a scout I know what I got and I need to use it the best of my ability, or wait till I die and turn into an engineer. It is with that statement that I bring you what your TF2 character choice says about you:
The Scout: “don’t worry I got it” The person that picks the scout says he’s team player but deep down is really a glory hog. All offense, no defense, all about winning it for everyone and making sure we are all aware who stole that last check point. The closest thing to a high school football star in the game. Just be glad there is no friendly fire, because if there was he’d probably kill you for the briefcase just before you hit the basement.
The Soldier: “Rocket Launcher and a shotgun, this guy is gonna be awesome!” Ahhh the statement of a newbie, it’s easy to spot the new guy because they always pick the soldier and die quickly, but be warned dumb luck is sometimes on his side. On the bright side this guy is usually just happy to be playing and willing to take orders, just like a good soldier. He is usually the invited friend of a scout.
The Pyro: “Let’s go the em, I’ll stay here for a bit” The strong silent type, usually an experienced offensive player who likes the having the ability to fall back. Brags when he kills someone but rarely gets in the middle of the fight. Doesn’t take orders but doesn’t really make mistakes either. If you have a friend looking to get into your already full room, he’s the guy you should boot.
Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 later today:
Wombat, cool, i hope they fix that lag issue you mentioned by the time i get OB. i might get it this week
