Recently bought an MP3 player and now im trying to get it working, in the directions it says to hook it up to a USB port and not a hub....whats the difference between the two?
I think the damn thing isnt charging, but cant tell....if its not im wondering if I hooked it up to a USB hub instead of port.
Edit - It now seems to be charging, but my PC still does not want to recognize it as plugged in meaning I cant upload music or register it.

A USB Hub is essentially something that turns one USB port into multiple USB ports.
Like how a router can turn one internet connection into multiple ones... that same line of thinking.

If you have a hub with a power cable, you can probably use it there. Thing is, most hubs don't supply power, and thus won't charge the player.

In other words since its plugged in directly to my PC it shouldnt be a problem
*scratches head*
Dont get why its not charging then.
*thinks this is why a product that isnt meant to be used physically on a PC should always plug into an AC Adaptor*
Anyways thanks. If ya have a suggestion why it might not be charging would love to hear it. If anyone knows anything about it its a 4GB Creative Zen Microphoto MP3 player.

If the MP3 player is going to charge over the USB connection, it needs a powered port to do it. If you have a hub that doesn't have an AC adapter powering it, the ports will have a limited amount of power, drawing it from the PC's USB port. If the hub has an AC adapter, it can provide power to the port, and therefore charge the MP3 player.

Thing is my PC isnt detecting it at all. I decided id try and put some music on it to test if its even connected and it says its not being detected. I tried plugging and unplugging it as well as changing the USB its plugged into but it didnt make a difference. Iv hit their site but its been useless so far.
Edit - So after uninstalling and reinstalling the program the battery charge is now flashing...so apparently thats going good. However, its still saying its undetected both in product registry as well as in the tools added to add music.

Could be it needs USB 2.0 and you only have 1.1 ports, which could fuck shit up.

Any way of telling? My PC is about 2 1/2 years old so that sounds like it could possibly be.

Creative MP3 players frequently aren't native USB drives, which is why I've avoided them.
This means they can be inaccessable from the PC except through the Creative software. Have you installed that?
Also, do other devices work through the same USB port? Front panel ports can suffer from bad assembly and some lack the full power, which is 500mAmp.

I installed the software that came with the disk cept AOL desktop and Yahoo music which didnt seem needed. And I tried using another port but it didnt help. Besides why would it charge from this port but not be detected?

Got it working.....when I tried plugging the part into my MP3 player it didnt want to go in easily so I didnt force it....apparently the part doesnt slide in as easily as others do like my AC Adaptor to DS for instance. After pushing really hard to part clicked in further and is now being detected!
Thanks for the help guys.
