View Full Version : I'm thinking about becoming a WoW player. Please help me.

For some reason, the WoW episode of South Park really made me want to play this game, but I really can't decide if I should or not. I've heard so many good things about it, and so many bad things. First of all, there is no way I'm going to be able to pay $15 bucks a month to play it. Second, I'm really afraid I'm going to become hoplessly addicted to it, and third, it doesn't look like a game thats easy to just pick up and play. I'm not so great at RPG's, so that's kind of a problem for me.
But the more I read about this game, the cooler it looks. I'm definetly going to have to play it at some point, so I want to be ready. I've been to the website and I've read a lot, but I want to hear some advice right from the players mouths. So I thought I'd ask some CAG's to help me out. What do I need to know? Tell me everything. Hints, stratagies, what character and class is the best, good ways to pay for it, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It isn't too hard to play, I tried it for a 10 day period and didn't have any trouble.
What I didn't like was that running everything become increadibly boring. I wouldn't mind if it was every once in a while but pretty much every task after the first few required that I run from place to place.
But again, I only played it for a 10 day trail period so I don't have a good hold on the game. I think it's best if you try it for your self. I believe the game comes with a free month trail. If you can't pay the monthly fee, then that's a problem if you do become addicted to it.

WoW is not a hard game to play, it takes a few mins to get us to the interface and maybe a an hour to figure out the game mechanics (questing, gaining exp, equipment etc). Traveling beyond the newbie zone seems intimidating at first but there are online maps of WoW zones so you'd know where to go and where not to.
The cheapest way for me without pre-paying for a 6 months or 1 year is buying a 60 day time card on amazon.com for $24.98. Thats $12.50 compared to $15+tax?? (i think they charge tax I could be wrong).
I use to play WoW for about a year, its extremely addicting. Its a great game from Level 1-59, but as soon as you hit 60 it becomes very tiring. You will spend hours and days trying to get better gears, competing with other players who are trying to get the same gear. With the expansion out, the level cap is now 70..so I guess now its fun from L1-69. If you want to play WoW, say goodbye to your social life.
As for what characters to play, Rogues are deadly but they die easy..there ARE plenty of them. I dont suggest them because you will have trouble finding groups to go with on instance dungeons, specially high level ones. I could say the same for Hunters.
Healers are always good play..Druids, Shamman and Priests. Warriors will always find a home in any high level group, since they are the only ones who could tank and survive high level instance boss. Race will also play a factor on you class, so read up the WoW forums on what race and class combo works best.

I have no idea what most of that means.
Why does everyone keep telling me that the game starts to suck at level 60? What happens?
And what happens when you die? I don't really understand how this game works yet.

Ok, to break it down easily, the game is pretty much:
1.) Running around, completing quests for npcs, usually killing something, collecting items, or running some form of errand. (Questing)
2.) Leveling up your skills(Axe/Sword/Bow/Gun/Wand/etc.)/professions(Skinning/Blacksmitthing/Leathworking/etc.) This is done by also collecting items, and wasting time.
3.) Killing Monsters (mobs) over and over, just for exp and items (Grinding/Farming)
4.) Instance Running, Instances are dungeons created for you and your current party, No other people can enter an instance, unless they are in your party, i'd read more about it on the website if you need more information on them.
And when you reach level 60, you are pretty much still a noob until you have one of the armor sets, and some godly weapon, noone will respect you until then, and the game just becomes completely annoying unless you have a good guild (Remember that Fat Jabba-the-Hut guy from south Park, Yeah that's a 100% model of what a wow player that has everything essentially turns into, no life, just running ZG/AQ/MC (Level 60+ Instances) with his/her guild)
When you die, you become a ghost, run to your corpse to revive with only 10% durability loss, or revive at a spirit healer for a durability hit on items and ressurection sickness for 10 mins (temporary stat reduction)
Overall it's a fun/addicting game, but it's main goal is to turn a casual gamer into a hardcore gamer, taking any social interaction you have with it.

From what I heard, WoW sucks; overrated.
I'd probably go play EVE online if I were you though, that isnt necessarily a grind, just takes time to research but pvp in it is fun.

I got bored/annoyed by level 30, and quit. Then again, I can't stand other people so I'm not sure why I was playing an MMO in the first place.
But if you really want to try it and don't know anyone with a trial code or whatever, I know they are selling a 14 day trial disc for $2 at Wal-mart (maybe other stores too, but Wal-mart is hte only place I've seen it).

Do you like playing other games? You can kiss most of them goodbye when you start WoW. I've lost friends to it. Not that I don't consider them friends anymore, but I haven't seen them since they started playing WoW. We'll still call this particular friend that plays all the time to see if he wants to go out with the group, and he'll say "Yeah, that sounds fun." He never shows up.

WoW is a really great game. I got into it twice. The first time I played up to level 48 or so and had a bunch of mid-level characters too. The game is just fantastic the first time you play it. Up until level 30 you will be having a great time. At level 30 or so you will most likely see some of the game's shortcomings and not play as much. After that it gets a bit worse and worse. The solution is to join a good Guild and stick with it.
I also started playing again this summer. I only played for a little while. Up to level 20 or so, which is not a lot.
Overall I suggest you go for it. It is easy to pick up and fun to play. And why do people keep using the word addicted? If it is a good game why not keep playing? Addiction is where you cannot go on without it. And people can stop playing WoW at any time but just do not becuase it is just plain fun.
But, yeah. I do not play any more. After you play anything over and over it is bound to get old.

Its a grindfest!!! I've played 3 Grindfesters in my lifetime and I never will again! The first one I was like "Hey, this is kinda cool". "2nd one was hmm this is alright...but I'll quit now even though it's alright because it's a waste of time", then the 3rd one even though I had already figured out as a waste of time just sucked me into playing and shortly after I realized its a huge waste of time since it provides no action and the only reason you play is for the people and the new things you get! So...now I stick to console games and PC shooters...and it's a lot more fun.

If I do decide to start playing it, I won't start until I've beaten all my games. Also, this isn't going to happen anytime soon. There's alot of stuff I need to buy before I can even think about playing this (Wii, HDtv, Gears of War, etc.)
I just really want to play this game while it's poular. Years from now everybody's going to be saying how great WoW was. I want to play it before it dies down, or else I'll never know what it was like.

If you want a taste of WoW without any cost you can ask anyone with a WoW account to send you a free trial. It's only a 10 day trial and there are some limitations. You will need a credit card for the trial though. Once you get the referal, you will get info to download the WoW client and then you can play. If you want to keep playing after the trial is over you will need to buy a copy of the game, which I think is only $20 retail and comes with a free month included.
Anyone you know who has the game and an active account can refer you through the WoW account management page. If you buy the game and continue to play, they will get a free month for refering you. There is a referal thread here on cag at:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95528&page=3
If you do not know anyone actively playing the game that you might want to give a free month, pick one of the cags from the above link (shameless plug - I can send you a referal too, just PM me an email address).

What about Guild Wars? It seems to be based on skill and not leveling, so it must take less time to play and still be fun, right?
Guild Wars has better PvP, but the gist is the same. The only good thing I guess is you're not paying a monthly fee.

Look, like any other online game, WoW is completely what you make of it. Sure, there are some hardcore crazy 14 hour a day players with crazy gear (the South Park dude). Sure like anything else on the internet, the game has it's fill of knuckleheads. But what you won't hear on a message board is that the game also has a good amount of causual and non-hardcore players who play for 5-10 hours a week, take 8 months to hit level 60 (instead of 3 weeks) and just play the game to relax or enjoy themselves.
You dont HAVE to be hardcore. Will you want to be once you start playing? Maybe, it really depends on your personality. You may see the hardcore people's cool looking armor and weapons and want to be "respected" by those people, but the game is designed so that you absolutely don't need to. You can easily reach level 60 with gear you just find along the way or get from turning in quests. The game is VERY forgiving when it comes to skill and mistakes and if you get lost or stuck on a quest, there are entire websites devoted to showing you the way to go.
But it is just a game, and the experience you get out of it completely depends on what you put into it.

I enjoyed WoW for about 2 months. I got to about level 45 and figured out that:
A) I needed at least 4-6 hours of playtime in a single sitting to be able to do anything, and I don't have that much time.
B) I'm doing pretty much the same stuff as I have been for 2 months, and it's getting boring.
Just my experience though.

If you really want "help" the help we can give is don't get sucked into it. You'll wish you had the time back and had done something productive with your life.
If you still want to get into a mmoprg but dont like the cost. Try Hero online. Free and all the grinding fun of a huge lengthy mmoprg. At least when you realize that you wasted your time playing it, you wont have spent a dime on it and can sell your kit on ebay.
As a side note, WOW wouldnt be so bad if most of the players weren't complete tools. I guess it's like that in all mmorpgs though. Most of the decent smart people are out enjoying life.

It's really odd because I waste my time doing so many things that are worthless (like most people here I waste time playing video games which has no real life value to it no matter what anyone says), but only playing an MMORPG have I found myself saying, "God, I want that time back."

I don't think that's fair, there are plenty of tools in real life, too. The difference is in an anonymous online environment, people feel free from real life reprecussions (e.g. physical harm, social ostracism, etc.) they normally would have to consider. As it turns out, a lot of people's true natures are being tools.

Im gonna go with the don't do it, I played FFXI (same difference as WoW) and it was pretty darn "addicting", I had fun thought but stopped before my free month was up (put in nearly 200 hours though). If you want some sort of MMORPG taste I would go with guild wars, its like the MMORPG-lite and it really can't take up more time than a few good console RPGs would, and theres no "grinding" unless you have done all the missions and want to farm items and have no life for a pretty dead end game.

Alright. My main concern at this point is being able to pay for it. I have plenty of money, but it's gunna be hard for me to give up all that cash just to play a game. I think it's rediculous to have to pay a monthly fee to play a game http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif
But fortunetly, a friend is going to share his account with me. So whenever he's at work, or not playing it, I can use it, (like he's ever gunna stop playing it).
If I can ever afford to dish out that kind of cash I'll definetly start playing, but $15 bucks a month is too steep for me. Ecspecially if it's for a game.

I hunted around and bought 3 2-month cards at best buy and used a coupon from these very pages to get the cards for $60 total.
When I first started I thought the monthly fee was bogus. But if you get into it and you enjoy it, even if you're playing casually for 6-8 hours on the weekends, it's worth it (IMO). I didn't have a problem with the fees, and I think for all the gaming I got, WoW was quite a bargin (got the game and a free month for $19.99 and then 6 months for $60).
Having said that, make every attempt you possibly can to keep your gaming hours reasonable. I was a good little boy and played mostly casually up until the very end, and then I let raiding suck me in. I don't think it's any coincedence that my enjoyment of the game was inversely proportional to the time played per week. The game was crazy fun (especially with real-life friends over TS) from levels 30-58. Enjoy yourself in there.

If you're going to put hours a day into a game, it might as well be Dance Dance Revolution [because you'll be in excellent shape once you can do whole work outs of heavy songs]
Seriously, why would I play a game that wouldn't challenge me mentally, physically, and emotionally? DDR is one of those games.
Or Street Fighter, if I had the time I'd practice more and really start hitting the arcades.
That or poker, where there's money to be made I hear, I hate poker, but you can make money playing poker.
Hopefully you're not addicted buy now, think of what you can do with $15 a month, especially over the long run.

Wow, so true, precisely why I've -never- played any online RPG's...there's no "end"..without an "end"..there's no purpose...it's not sport..it's not skill...so there's no point in pushing yourself harder.
More than anything it seems kind of demonic...I can't even get near playing 12 hours of ANYTHING [closest I've come is 10 hour bouts of Xenosaga..but that's about 6 hours playing and 4 hours watching, so it's more varied...and I can actually do other stuff and stop if I need to]

I don't understand why anyone thinks you have to play for 10 hours a day. I guess it's the "all you can eat buffet" mentality, where you supposedly aren't "getting your money's worth" unless you are there every single spare hour you have.
I think another issue (problem) is with people who have never played immersive games like this. I've been playing MMOGs since the 300 baud days (if you want to consider those type of games MMOGs), so none of this is anything new. But for people who have not learned how to balance it in their lives... it's sometimes a tough lesson.
