Beatmania, which one to get for a newcomer?

I picked up the Beatmania combo from work today. The US soundtrack is shitty as hell. Knowing that anything that's made in Japan is much better than it's US counterpart (IE any anime ever) I knew that the JPN versions have much much better song selections.

So I come here to ask anyone who has played any version to recommend me a good version. Be it old or new. Any help would be great.

The learning curve in the series is pretty steep, so you can really start anywhere. I particularly like 10th Style and IIDX RED. You might also wait for this December's release of IIDX 12: Happy Sky.
