My DVD drive died several months ago and im in dire need of a new one. Compusa is having some awsome awsome sales right now and I can get an internal drive for $40 and they will install it for $30. Before I buy this I just wanted to ask to make 100% sure it usually doesnt matter what drive you buy, if you have a newer PC anything you buy should be compatible with it/Windows XP right?

I don't see why it wouldn't work, especially if you have windows xp.

It's actually very easy to install it yourself, but anyway...
Yeah, they're Plug & Play. I would recommended getting something somewhat brand-name, though. And absolutely stay away from this brand called Afree / Affrey / Afreey. They are complete garbage and cause conflicts.

It should be fine, regardless of brand.
What I'm wondering is why on earth you would pay 30 fucking dollars to g et that shit installed when you can do it in 2 minutes yourself.

It takes about 10 minutes to install a DVD drive. Don't bother to pay them $30 to do it....they will probably screw it up.

The only ones I know that do cause conflicts for whatever reasons are if you have an Afree (or however you spell it) drive and a Pioneer in the same system. It's happened to me and several friends, so I ripped it out and put a second Pioneer drive in.

Yeah shouldn't matter. Everything should work with windows. Installing a IDE Drive (hard drive/Cd/dvd drive) is very easy. For 30 $ you can get an External Enclosure. I would also say look online like newegg.com. 40$ for a dvd drive ?? You can get 2 online or a good dvd burner for about 35$ shipped.

Ill take a look. I didnt even think of checking new egg.
Anyways, about installing it myself....everyone says its the easiest thing in the world to do...but when it comes to the tech side of PCs i really dont know anything. Even with this said do you guys still reccomend trying to install it myself? I just really dont want to screw up and kill my PC.

It is so easy even your mom can do it. (if your mom is a computer geek, replace the word mom with the term "great grandmother" in the previous sentence).
Yes, it is that easy.
PS:
I would recommend getting it from newegg also.
Also, it is kind of hard to kill your computer when installing a dvd drive.
That is, unless you're trying to install it with a hammer or circular saw.
In that case, please upload some pics for the rest of us.

Do it yourself. It's one of the simplest computer upgrades/fixes you can do.

I'm pretty sure there are instructions that goes with the drive. Just follow it, and you should be fine.

You can get a nice DVD burner instead of just a DVD drive for $40 off NewEgg.

Almost all drives come with intructions. And check around online $40 does not sounds like a good deal at all.
Installation is so easy. You take out the other drive by either unscrewing it or mocing around some brackets. Then you unplug two cables from it(3 on a rare occasion). Then plug those same cables into the new drive. You might have to set the drive to either master, slave or cable select(do not worry about what these are). Just look at your old drive and see waht it is set to. There are pins with a jumper on the back and a diagram on the drive. So find out what it is set to and then set the same thing on your new drive. And then just boot the computer and you are done.
There is really no chance of messing any thing up. Unless you decide to submerge the drive in water or something.
