That's total horsecrap and i find that highly unlikely to be true. If your in on the first shipment, you should be in, end of damn story. This how gamestops always done it out here, maybe its different out there.
I sure hope so, because otherwise, that would be super crappy. We'll see. I mean, if it's not a huge hassle, then it'll be worth it. It's not like I can't get my deposit back.

unlike games system pre orders (think xb360) ARE numbered. and in ORDER of when the order was taken. why do i know? cause i work for a GS in CA. and unfortunatelyi have to be there in the AM for the preorder fiasco.
so say on launch date we get in 9 systems. we will call the 1st 9 people on the list and let them know there system is in the store and ready to be picked up within 48hrs. if they dont show or say they want to wait we will move on to # 10 and so on.
so it doesnt matter if you get in line on launch date, it all goes by your preorder slot #.
im not trying to be a dick or anything im just trying to let people know how it works.
that is true. if you don't pick up at 48 or 72 hours then its the next person on the pre-order list. so u don't have to come at midnight to pick it up. u can even wait the day after to pick it up.

I'm going to the mall gamestop. I think I'll have a better chance racing to the GS rather than waking up early.

HELL YEAH. Thanks for confirming that. I'm going to ask the person at gamestop that tomorrow just to make sure.
I hope there isn't a line tomorrow morning.. I only plan to wait 1 to 1½ hours before the store opens.

Its true. That's how they did the 360 launch at the Gamestop that I preordered at. They even had to wait a day for me to pick up mine, since I was at Zero Hour the day of the launch. :D

So can anybody clarify about the one per household thing...do all the local GS/EBs pool their list together and knock down those that have the same address like someone mentioned earlierl? If so, is there a way around it, like can I use my cousin's address or something instead? I don't recall them checking ID for pre-orders before, but it's been awhile since I've done a pre-order at eb/gs.
No worries I'm not doing the ebay thing, just need two systems, one for my little brother here and one for me when I head back to school next term... ...And I don't really feel like waiting and camping for over 12 hours in the frigid cold at Best Buy for a 2nd system on November 17th.....screw that, haha.
Any 411 or info mucho appreciated, thanks...

they did this for the xbox360 launch in southern california, but might vary for other areas. May be different now with PS3, so I don't know for sure.

I'm the manager at the Niagara Falls, NY. Gamestop in the Wegmans plaza. We will be able to take 16 pre orders for ps3's and the same is true for the EB store a little down the road by the timber lodge restaurant. These are the 2 best stores in the area and we got the most 360's last year as well. So if you want to make sure you get a ps3 this year for your self or for a gift, make sure you hit these locations.

Anyone know what the trade-in value of the fat ps2 is? I have two, and I run hd loader on the one with a bad laser, so I have no need for two.
Also, it just needs to have one controller, composite cables, and power cable?

Don't forget that some mall's open up early in the morning for walking. For instance the mall by me opens up around 7am so people can come inside to walk. None of the stores are open, but the mall is open.

Berkeley, CA @ Shattuck and Allston: only bums outside...no gamers. The guy closing the store had no clue what was going on. i'm going at 6am...buddy's meeting me shortly thereafter. i'll go in a couple hours to make sure the coast is clear before i even consider sleeping.
Wow, what a hullaballoo. Wii pre-orders on Friday? Well, I'll probably still pop by before then to see if the skus are in the system--I kinda just want to get my pre-order paid off and out of my hair already.

I actually talked to one of the assistant managers of this store (since I have their numbers...uhh, I have connections to the EBs around here) and they really have no idea whether they'll be preordering tomorrow or not. Guess I'm just gonna sleep in tomorrow, lol.

My girlfriend has a midterm tomorrow morning anyway and she'll be flying around bright and early keeping me awake as she panics. Might as well make use of that time ;) I'll just take my chem text and relax.
What time do Gamestops/EBs usually open? 9am? I will go tomorrow just because I work late and have the morning to kill. Maybe I will get lucky.

Anyone know how EB/Gamestop verifies the person picking up the preorder?
I might wait in line tomorrow, but I'll be out of town the week of launch so my lil bro would have to go pick it up.
getmyrunon
10-10-2006, 03:01 AM
I'm sure if you told the manager ahead of time, brought your brother in with you/made sure they had your # to call you to check, presented sufficient IDs, etc. that they'd make sure that your brother managed to get it for you. Might be a little extra legwork but I don't think it'd be that much of a hassle.

at the store I used to work at, we'd make a note in the computer that the brother might be picking up and you can just give him the receipt.

Haha, I grew up in Berkeley/went to Cal - it is hard for me to picture EB's being there as they didn't exist when I moved away. I know there's a GS or something down in the new El Cerrito plaza area (I do make it back there once a year or so - wish I could catch some football games!).
Anyway, I went to a couple of EB's tonight - no campers, but plenty of people in the store who knew what was up and MANY calls on the phone asking about PS3 preorders while I was in there. So I really have no idea how it is going to go down tomorrow. I'm not going to try for 2 - just seems too risky. I'd hate to be high on one list and low on the other, but get them both bumped when they compare. I was kind of hoping for the sell one/keep one combo but I'll just wait till later for my "keep one", no big deal. Oblivion would be the only launch game I'm interested in and there's more than a few RPG's coming out for PS2/DS in the mean time to keep me busy.

I called, and it is true that nothing is a guarantee... You literally have to camp outside twice for absolute guarantee.
Also, lets say you do get in line for the pre-order, you will probably end up with the core edition.
Is it really worth it? BIG FAT NO!
Edit:
Some people are thinking that there's a priority on the first person in line... however, I've confirmed that it is not true. Regardless of who's first in line, the first few that pre-order will not be guaranteed.
For example, lets say 12 units are for pre-order tomorrow...
Lets say you're the first in line tomorrow for the pre-order.
On launch day, 10 units arrive at the store.
You're 15th in line that day.
The other 11 people that pre-ordered are all ahead of you in the line.
Result = Collect $100, wait till next shipment.
That just means you need to be first in line on launch day... no matter what.
Waiting in line twice is an absolute fail. I would hate to be working at EB or GS tomorrow morning. I'll probably still go, but if there is a big line I'll say fuck it and just go on Friday in hopes of pre-ordering a Wii.
some how i got the feeling some people are trying to sell the preorder.

Oh, the Cal/Oregon game last Saturday was sweet to behold. An absolute thrashing that made everyone in town happy as clams. And yeah...there's actually an EB on the first block of Telegraph now, in addition to the one a few blocks down on Shattuck. Many chains taking over...many longtime landmarks moving out. Cody's Books closed a few months ago after 50 years
I thought someone already confirmed that the units are going to be distributed on launch day in the same order as the preorders.

Limited PlayStation 3 Pre-Order
GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.
Our limited online pre-order program will be announced at a later date, after software and accessory availability dates are confirmed. Online product pricing and availability will vary and will be fulfilled independent of store reservations.

Yeah, I heard about Cody's - used to go there all the time. The last two football games (Oregon, Oregon State) were especially sweet for me since I live in the heart of Duck/Beaver country. I wish I had gone to the Beavers game - not too far for me... WSU is too far for this weekend :D.
When I lived in Berkeley the only places to get video games were Toys R Us WAY out in the sticks (Walnut Creek) and a drug store in Piedmont that I remembered carrying them (for some reason I have a vivid memory of getting Superman for the Atari there).
OK, so on topic - uh, yeah, so PS3 preorders... We should run a poll tomorrow to see who was successful and who wasn't in getting those preorders.

We will be able to take 16 pre orders for ps3's and the same is true for the EB store a little down the road by the timber lodge restaurant. Did you get the most 360s? New Hartford had 100 on launch day. :P
Sorry, playing catch up here. I don't know if the address thing has been cleared up yet, but it is not a factor. It's all done by name and phone number. Two different names under two different phone numbers means two different pre-orders.
To the GS employee claiming that it's absolutely first come, first serve it's most certainly not. As I stated before (page 12 of this thread?) it in many cases boils down to favoritism. It's a COMPANY-WIDE problem. If a particular EB/GS is actually 100% honest I'd be damn surprised.

Receipt or name and phone number. Photo ID has never been required before (it should be) but an exception may be made for this product.

Do we get written confirmation of what position we are in the preorder line? Like does it say, Preorder #3 on our receipt or something?
I don't want to rely on the employees not to bump me down on the list.
They've never done it before so I doubt it. However, when they do a lookup for a particular product's pre-order the list of customers goes in order of who reserved first. I doubt they'll actually let you see this list, but you could just ask. (and maybe get an honest answer)
I would personally have them tell you what number you are when you order it. Make them a bit nervous and tell them to write it on your receipt. Push it and have them initial it. Chances are that they will take note of this and make sure that they don't screw you over on launch day. (they always perform a bit of damage control with the craftier customers as to avoid conflict)

That's my feeling, too. My closest EB is a 15-20 minute ride away, and even though it will almost certainly be a wasted trip, I'm going to head over there for 10:00 just to give it a shot. I remember the day the PS2 launched, after I got out of work (5:30 a.m.) I drove around checking to see how long the campout lines were at different stores. I had a preorder, so I was all set, but I was hoping to hook up a buddy who didn't preorder, then became desperate to get one at launch. We both got in lines at different stores, and updated each other on our cellphones, but he was out of luck that day. That's as close as I've ever come to camping out, but I can't see myself ever doing anything like that just for a spot in the preorder line.
Good luck to all CAGs trying to get preorders today.

Feh...sounds like too much trouble for me, since I'd sell it anyway. I guess I'd rather leave it for those who want one to play. The uncertainty about the whole "first-come, first-serve" garbage is not worth it to have to possibly camp out twice. Good luck to all trying to get one.

Somebody reported 4 people waiting in line at the gamestop I wanted to go to as of 2:30AM pacific time.. can't make up my mind whether or not to just go now. I mean, I can't even sleep anyway..
I am not sure what is more crazy camping out for a preorder or camping out for a system hthat as already launched. Good luck CAGs on getting a preorder. I do like the new system of preordering after being screwed from Gamestop in the past on preorders.

Drove by GameStop and EB on the way to work this morning. No one outside GameStop, 6 or 8 people sitting outside EB with lawn chairs and laptops. Not sure if GS did a midnight presale, or just opened earlier to get people out of there. Or if for some reason no one is waiting.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before. I remember reading many pages earlier that you couldn't order more than one PS3 unless you had a different credit card or cash, with a different name to use than your first order.
Do you think one could order another PS3 at a different location using the same credit card?

This makes me lol. Really, the PS2 and 360 taught me a lesson -WAIT. You -know- there's gonna be a load of bum units that die in a month and then people are gonna be fucked up till spring because their won't be any units to replace them.
I want to know when I can pre-order my Wii though. All this trouble and bs to get a PS3 is going to result in a lot of people just picking up a Wii instead.

I noticed that earlier. It even says it's in stock but doesn't actually let you add it to your cart. Possibly somehow mixed up with the PS1 Warhawk... but that actually sells for $12.99 used.

Or can I preorder a system and am like number 3 and I won't have to worry about camping out on launch day and I can just go pick it up in the morning sometime. I'm confused.

Number 3 would mean you are guaranteed the third system they get in on launch day. If they happen to get two in you are F*cked and would have to wait till next shipping. But most stores are getting between 8 and 16. The not guaranteed just means that even though you put 100 down you aren't guaranteed because some people who get lets say number 21 will come in on launch and flip a shit because they preordered and are not gettign one.

Ok I get it now. There 8-16 systems they are supossed to get in are not guarenteed to the company. Sony could take away some units to a certain store and by EB/GS stating that no one is guarenteed makes sense now. Thanks for the clear up guys.

well put, only thing that is wrong there is the part about #21. every store is strictly forbidden to take MORE that the 8 or 16 reserves that they are alotted. Unless something really messed up is happennig, every store should not be taking more than 16 pre-orders MAX

Also, something I just noticed reading through some of the topic I had missed, they asked me whether I wanted to preorder the $499 or $599 version. No idea why they'd ask if it was going to be a toss up who got what systems/how many 60 GB versions they were going to get in.

Y'know, I don't think anybody's really entertained the idea that this is one hell of a marketing scheme (albeit one based on production circumstances more than shrewd marketing): they're creating a frenzy for PREORDERING the item, knowing that they won't be able to sate demand.
It's like the Xbox 360 ordeal, but Sony's getting a leg up on creating demand.

I'd say that it's more of a result of last year's insane 360 eBay prices as opposed to Sony marketing. I can envision at least half of the PS3's being preordered winding up on eBay as soon as they get them.

I got to my local ebgames (Greensboro NC) at about 8:45am. I was second in line, the guy before me had been there since 5am. The store manager said they were taking 14 preorders, and she said that she didn't know when the wii preorder would be. She expected it to be later in the week.
When you preorder they ask which model you want, and she didn't know how the allocation of the different models would work. My store handed out a little disclaimer sheet pretty much saying that I wasn't guaranteed a system at launch, but that I would be guaranteed one of the first systems that they recieved. Also, it stated that online preordering was separate from the B&M preordering. I assume that means that I could potentially not get one at launch while those who order online could.
EDIT:
I also ordered the 60 gb and the number on my reciept is 020072. My girlfriend was with me and I could have easily had her preorder one to ebay, but my conscience just wouldn't let me. I know how much I hated the xbox 360 shortage that I feel was caused by all of the people who preordered one just to sell it. That may be naieve, but I'd rather not take advantage of idiots, wait I mean ebayers.......

She apparently (this is when I really doubt her) stated that Sony is talking of a $100 price drop across the board for each version to spur sales.

#2 on a list of 8. Or #3; they let the first guy order two as he used to work at that store. He had been there since 8:30 that morning, and I showed up at 9:50, ten minutes until the store openned. About two minutes later, two other dudes showed up. Then, about a minute before opening, fatty showed up, then after opening, one more. The rep counted us and said we were it for preorders.
My location is not doing a midnight launch, so I'm still planning on camping in front of a major retailer November 16-17 to try to get another one. Then, after I get one or strike out, I'll hit my GameStop.
One (scammy?) thing my GameStop was doing -- the rep said if you preorder a game with the system, that location has a better chance of getting all of its allocation. The more games that a store has preordered, the better chance on geting allocation. I let the guy sign me up for Untold Legends or something. Is this crap?

Just got back from the EB at the Auburn Mall (Auburn, Massachusetts) and I got my preorder no problem at all. The guy there said they were only doing 14, and showing up at 9:58 netted me number 2. There were only 2 other people waiting outside the store when I got there; a woman who said she got there at 9:30 (she got number 1) and a guy who didn't seem to be there for the PS3 preorder. When I got there, he walked away from the door and sat on a bench, then when they opened the store he kind of slowly meandered in. I was waiting to see if he got in line for a preorder because I didn't want to jump his spot in line, but he just started looking around the store.
Man, I feel bad for everyone finding lines of 20+ people. That's what I expected to find, too. Couldn't believe it when I walked around the corner and there were just 2 people there.
Oh, by the way, the guy at my EB also asked if I wanted to preorder the $499 or $599 version, so hopefully preorders will get the version they ask for.

Take it for what its worth. I did place a call to three of our total 7 stores and one in particular stated he was only getting 14 in. Not the 8 or 16 like I had read elsewhere...
Probably 16 - 2 that employees are getting.

Hmm, I've got a question if anyone has seen any official word on this. Are all stores (given the current info) going to get at least 8?
I asked the manager as I was preordering how many he was expecting to get, and he told me it was "against company policy" to say that, which obviously seems untrue given what everyone else here is saying. I might call later today and ask again.

I was first at one gamestop and then I got another pre-order at a different one right across the street ironically. Not so bad in my area, the lines that is. And yea, these are getting ebayed. Everyone in line said they are selling theirs. Nobody wants this thing for $600.

It's times like this that I wish I didn't work a 9 - 5...but my job pays fairly well and the savings I earn from staying at home just a little bit longer will go towards a next-gen system next year. eBay will be fun to watch this holiday, with the new systems nad Elmo TMX's.
I just wonder how many PS3/Wii empty boxes will sell for system MSRP? ;)

they had 12 at the local eb and 2 at gamestop....I got there at 8 45 and was #16 in line. The damn mall opened up at 7am for "walkers" i just wish it said so on the door or on the website, as I would have been there at 7am. Anyways, the kid who was #2 in line sold his spot to some other guy for 600$ cash money 5 minutes before the store opened.
Oh damn I would have jumped at that in a hurry (meaning sold my spot). That guy better hope he gets his early (to resell) unless he is truely buying it for a relative and wants to save by buying the spot now at $600 compared to later.
I wonder whats going to happen with ebay. I am guessing they will still be overpriced. I cant wait to see the game attach rate on these though..
I am also curious at to when the first preorder PS3 is going to go on ebay... it should appear today sometime I would think.

I was #3 customer (#5 overall after employee pre-orders). The store opened up at 10 AM. The first guy in line got there at 8:45 AM, the second guy at 9:50 AM and I was there at 9:55 AM. Small town EB - but it looked like they were taking 16 pre-orders - and there were customers for all of them by 10:15 AM.
EDIT - BTW My store said they were taking pre-orders for the premium ($600) PS3 only

Hey:
I came to work at my normal time. At 9:30am I took an early lunch and went across the street to my burlington center NJ location.
The EB was doing 16 preorders and gamestop was only doing 6. Gamestop had 7 people in line so I just went to EB and they were already open.
total wait time was 2 minutes. Not too bad after reading all of the stories on the campers...

QFT. I personally like making money but with the PS3's it is just werid. Sure they will be sold out. I think only about 10% of the people who buy these actually want them. The other 90% will be on Ebay. I hope there are sooo many on ebay there will be minimal profit to be had. Thats what I expect anyways.

Sitting in line right now, 2 people in front of me. I've been here since 6 but no one was in front of the store then so I walked around with my neighbor (he's one of those "walkers"). Guy next to me said the other gs and eb in the area were already packed at 7, so I guess people completely ignored the mall. Good for me.

Going the 'You're crazy' route, I got there at 5am. Only person to be seen. 1/14, got my premium pack reserved. By 7am there were 2 more, 8am 3 more on top of that. At 10am, there were 12. My store was getting 14, and apparently no employees were interested, so everyone will get a system... just no guarentee for a premium. This was in Passaic County, NJ.
Reports from other stores were similar numbers or slightly more. No idea about the malls though.. sure those were madhouses. Everyone on the line was going to sell, and even bragging about their 360 accomplishments last year. We're not unless the actual launch titles suck asshole.

Oh, they'll sell. Im sure there are 400,000 whiney rich kids with lazy parents in this country to buy them all up, and I'm sure there are enough college kids/people with no jobs who have time to wait outside an EB on a Tuesday morning to sell it to them.

I got mine today in Bristol CT. My Gamestop still has no clue what they're doing though.
I got there at 9 after dropping my little sister off at school and there was a guy there since 7, but nobody else. It was just me and him until somebody else showed up around 9:30. Then just before 10 a few more people showed up.
The guy in front of me ordered the PS3 "core" (whatever they're calling it) and the employee told everybody that was it for the preorders. I knew he was joking because there is no way they would only get one core. Long story short I'm #2 on the list and #1 for the premiums. Hooray me.
Now I just need them to take preorders for the Wii and my plan for world domination will be complete.

UPDATE:: Second round of preorders will start tomorrow. They only took half today becuase they wanted to see the demand/ lessen the hysteria. Be ready to camp out tonight if you didnt get one today. :bomb: :bomb:That would mean EB/GS is getting almost 100k PS3s (average of 12 per store x 2, some 4000 stores), which is a quarter of the North American allotment. I'm gonna go ahead and say no.
Got there at 9:15, 45 mins before opening at a low traffic store, was the 2nd one. By 10am there were 5 of us, leaving only 1 left when the store opened, and we sat around and watched people start to come in and get turned away (and laugh at the employees having to do it.) :D:D:D Surprisingly only two out of the 8 are looking to ebay theirs.

I went crazy with the stories of people camping last night and got to the Waterbury Gamestop (across from price chopper - not the one in the mall) at about 7. Was there for a while in my car until someone else showed, and then I decided to sit outside. We sat and talked games for an hour or so as some people came by and watched us in line, before driving away (looked like they wanted to preorder too). Around 8:45 an old man showed up to buy one for his 31 year old son, and at about 10 there were five of us in line total. I was first.
The manager came by earlier, however, and had absolutely no idea why me and the other guy were there. We told him about the preorder and he said he'd let us know "the official word." Right. Then the girl working there showed and we talked to her a bit - we both lucked out in that neither the manager or the girl wanted a ps3.
But here's the thing that confused the hell out of me - the manager came out and gave us slips indicating that we weren't guaranteed a system at launch. Everyone in line ended up asking a bunch of questions, and he told us the following (hopefully someone who actually works at a gamestop will help clear this up):
"We are only reserving 16 systems for launch. However, it is a first come, first serve basis and you are not guaranteed a system at launch. So lets say Sony only ships us 5 - it doesn't mean that the five of you will have those systems with your names on them. It'll be the first five people who preordered that show up to pick up a system. So if the 16th person shows up before the first, he'll get the system, so long as he has his preorder receipt. If we get 16, then there's no problem. There is no formal order, so it doesn't matter what place in line you're in. Just be here early on launch day and hope we have enough."
So it looks like, after camping for a few hours for a preorder, I'll have to camp for a few hours for launch. Shit.
In any case, my friend (who was number 3 in our line) had his girlfriend go to the EB across the street and she told us that once the doors opened, about 24 people came out of their cars to come in. Gamestop ftw.
I took pictures with my camera phone too of our meager line. Upload them a bit later.

I was about to hit the sack, but I decided to stroll around on some gaming sites. I was surfing around and casually saw that 1up had confirmed the rumors that the PS3 pre-orders were happening today. I raced down to the Gamestop on Stateline Rd, in Kansas City, MO at about 11:36 pm and found one person sitting there. I took it as a sign that I was ok to come back later for some reason, luckily when I came back at around 3 a.m. only one other person had strolled up.
The two guys and myself were really the only people there until about 8, which was making me wonder why I had even decided to show up so early. Then two more showed up at 9 and then the steady stream. What I really appreciated was that the manager was pretty upfront with us and told us that 6 were available. No jumping through hoops, or giving us speil on not being guaranteed a system at launch. What sucked for the guy that was initially number 2 was that he was there with his son, so they wouldn't allow him to pick up the system which bumped me to #2, and made someone else's day.
Overall the way it was handled was pretty well in KC, MO. They took a little long to open the door, and it was only one at a time X-P, but overall it was handled pretty well.

While I would LOVE to see that happen (Ebay block the PS3 sales), truth is that they make a killing off them (look at the statistics from last year's 360 sellings). They would never deny themselves that kind of profit.

I just don't recall EB stores getting 2 or 3 times as many 360s as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc. Though I guess if they're only distributing to the major retailers this time through, that would be more understandable.

That sounds like crap. Ebay limits stuff that's illegal, such as rom stuff and so forth. Selling a PS3 isn't illegal. It's highly profitable for both ourselves and eBay. Talk about page hits and listing/final value fees.

Yeah, that would make perfect sense that ebay will give up it's profit by not allowing any PS3 listings.
Ebay made lots of money off of the xbox 360 last year. I highly doubt that they are going to "ban" any type of holiday item that makes them money.

Yeah considering eBay will take about 10% off what you make on the back end, I don't see them banning PS3's.

It's possable as Sony could indeed make a 'deal' with Ebay and the other sites to pretty much stick a big old knife in the backs of the resellers. The question is, will Ebay bite?
I almost hope they do, because the lolz from angry resellers would be fantastic. Best lulz would result if they waited 24 hours before offical launch.

Transaction number does not equal reservation number--there may have been employee reservations before you (though it should be a max of two).
Maybe they were "holding" a reservation for someone, who knows. Could have been processing pennied out items.
There's a couple possibilities of why the first reservation (or so on) is not the first transaction of the day.

The manager at the store I preordered at (#13 of 16) claims that the allocation will match what is ordered: if you get 16/16 60GB systems, that's what they will get. If you order 5/16 60GB, the other 11 will be 20GB. I'm not positive it's true, but he's a somewhat reliable dude from my experience.
When I went in to PO, he was on the phone with one of two people they caught preordering at multiple stores - so they had to cancel the preorders!

Probably the sixth for your version then (the 20 or 60). I was the first one in line, and mine says two as well. But then, I actually SAW the manager/worker's receipt lying in plain sight on the counter. Right by his register. Conspicuously covered, save for a "100.00" at the bottom. Yeah, wonder what that's for ;)
But I can deal with being number two for the 60. At least they didn't sell all 8 systems to the store employees. He was taking a list of the names on a sheet of paper as well, and I got number one on that one. Lady right after me? Number 3. So I guess he and I are switched up there so as not to be so obvious, since that list's probably being used as a reference for other employees and such.
Oh, and of course, thanks CAG for letting me in on the info for this deal. I waited about two hours, but I can't even imagine what it would have been like to find one of these this year otherwise.

As soon as I saw this post, I called my GS employee friend to confirm, and he did confirm, so now, after many long, long hours, here I am. Anyway, I got to my Gamestop at about 11:30 last night, and reserved the 60 GB PS3 today. I was the fourth one. Now I have to go to class....

for those thinking about selling them on ebay, make it a fixed price listing, make it paypal only, use the "immediate payment required" feature, only accept payments from confirmed addresses, only accept ebay payments through the auction link within paypal, and only sell to buyers within the US.
then, when you sell it, package the item very well and print very clearly. use various USPS services. make sure you get an online tracking number, get a return receipt, signature confirmation, insurance, and maybe even other services.
i'm not positive, but if you do all of those things, i think it would be pretty hard for someone to scam you. does anyone see any possible loop holes in what i just said? are there any safer options?
i'm not sure if i'm gonna keep the system, ebay it, or possibly just cancel my pre-order...but i'm 6th on the list (i would have been 4th if it wasn't for the eb employees putting themselves first and second on the list...that shouldn't be allowed).

It would be funny if Sony purposely took the bad heat and said they were only going ot have 400,000 systems when in reality they ahd the 1 million or whatever... This way there is a big preorder frenzy then another frenzy when people find out theres an "additional" 600,000 units to be had.. Then all this negative publicity would be forgotten I bet.

While I would LOVE to see that happen (Ebay block the PS3 sales), truth is that they make a killing off them (look at the statistics from last year's 360 sellings). They would never deny themselves that kind of profit. Why would you like to see that, because you're jealous of the money some people would make? Get over it people. you want a PS3 because you wanna play the games? Then get their before the ones who are going to sell them, it's that simple. You're not entitled to anything, it's first come, first serve, and what those people do with their systems is their own damn business.

Good advice, but I wouldn't use USPS. I'd go with FedEX ground or UPS. Their rates are cheaper and they have much better package tracking.

Shit.
Got the same BS at the GameStop I went to (3rd in line). Employee working the counter made us jot down our name, address, phone, and email before taking our order. He also entered in our name, phone, and email in the computer while taking our order. When I requested he write down my pre-order spot in line and put his initials on the receipt he refused to do so. I asked him, "So, anyone who preorders today after me has the same spot in line as me?" and he said "Yes".
However, my cousin was at an EB Games accross the street (he also was 3rd in line) and wasn't given the special piece of paper and speech. He didn't have to jot down anything on paper, the employee only asked for his name and number while ringing him up. When he requested the employee to write down his spot in line and put his initials on the receipt, he obliged.

Ebay ENCOURAGES the sale of hot holiday items on ebay, provided its not illegal or against one of their policies which the ps3 is not. Whoever said that is totally lying and is just trying to stop people from making a profit off them, in fact he probably preordered a ps3 for himself just so he could make a profit on ebay.
What i think should be done, and yes it would be totally evil if it ever happened, is for sony to sell their short supply of consoles directly on ebay themselves, thus eliminating the middle man (the consumer). Since the money from ebay sales is going into the consumer's pocket sony would be stupid if they did not sell their consoles exclusively on ebay.

Checked around here(I'm in King of Prussia, PA)...They all sold out their preorders within minutes...This is going to be incredible...The PS3 launch will far surpass the madness that was the 360 launch...Nintendo better have 11 million units shipping, because if they do...They are going to clean house

This was the final total of the line minutes before the place opened. Most everyone was on their cells securing other PS3s:

Ebay sellers make sure that you cover your ass, and insure it, return receipt, signature confirmation and all of that...Buyers have all the power with Paypal, even if you've been Ebaying for years.

Yeah, they only took my name and number. I really don't want to have to go through the same crap to get the actual system at launch, but I suppose it won't be as bad because only 14 of us will be waiting in line.

Yes!! I found this thread at 10:05, called 5 EB/GS in the area and all were sold out except for one store that had 5 units left. I just got up and left work and was down there in 15 min, and pre-ordered unit 14 of 14!
Thanks CAG!
I just got back. Here's my morning:
2:00AM --- I contemplate going out in the cold this early. I want a preorder, but not bad enough to leave my warm apartment. I set my alarm for 6:30 and put in a couple hours of sleep.
6:35AM --- Throw layers of clothes on and drive across town.
6:50AM --- I stop by the first EB location, to check out the line. I count twelve people. Afraid that they might not have that many, I turn around and head for the mall location.
7:05AM --- Walk into the mall and see the elderly off on their morning walks. Get up to EB...and there's only one other person there! This is gonna be great!
8:00AM --- The other person in line starts talking to me. It turns out he's a CAG! (sainrub)
8:05AM --- Two more people show up.
8:55AM --- An EB employee whom I recognize comes out and tells us only the first person in line (sainrub) will be getting a PS3. They only have one for preorder, and the other two are going to employees. He tells the three of us to try the other store.
9:05AM --- I get back to the first EB. I am now 15th in line.
9:15AM --- An EB employees comes out and says they will have 16 systems! :D I'm ecstatic!
9:20AM --- I begin talking to the employee, and tell him what happened at the mall location. He tells me that store received two for employees, and eight for preorders. He then tells us that them turning the three of us down was bullshit, and we should've been able to preorder there. He's a really nice guy, and he promises us that store will be reprimanded, as well as the employee that turned us away.
10:30AM --- I finally walk out of the store with my receipt in hand.
The people in line were really friendly today. I feel really bad for the people that headed to the mall location after us, only to get turned down. (A few of them showed up later in our line, but were told the bad news.)
All of us in line got the 60GB version. And if I understood correctly, it didn't matter what # we were in line; if they only get 12, it's a free-for-all the night of the launch. (Whoever is first...) I might be wrong, but that's how it sounded.

That all sounds good to me, but then again, I've never sold anything on ebay. I'm not sure what I'll do with my preorder, either. I've been thinking about ebaying it, as I could really use the money- but it's funny how buzzed I got as soon as I had the preorder in hand....it was that "Oh man, I can't wait to play this" feeling I remember from past console launches. I have a buddy that I've been telling for the past year that I wasn't going to get one (at least not to keep) on launch day, and he's been laughing at me the whole time, saying "Yeah, right". Of course, he didn't get a preorder today, so I guess I have the last laugh.

Well, I was second in line... I really, REALLY hope it's not a free-for-all on launch day. That would be really unnerving. This morning was so stressful! I think it was worth it, though. We'll see what happens. Thanks, OP for tipping us off. I dunno what I'd do without you guys.

EB Games in Independence (KC), MO only took two preorders plus the managers. I got there at about six and there was one other guy there, who immediately said, "Do you read fatwallet or something?" Little did I know I was in for a morning of Fatwellet and slickdeal stories, this is what this guy does. He is an EBAY powerseller or something like that and had 16 Elmo's in his car. He was on the phone all morning bugging about other stores and what they had.
Anyway, he had gotten there about ten minutes earlier, I was second, and nobody else showed up until about 8. All in all about six other guys showed up until the manager came out and said 'two of you are pre-ordering, no more'. He let us two in the store and then at ten did his pre-order first, and then our two. As he was finishing up, his buddy came in and they talked for a while. I left but can't help but think that that buddy will get one.
All in all a good morning, number 2 behind the manager, but its interesting that he capped it at just 2. He said it was a decent volume store (1.5 mil I think).

Drove by three stores...saw 7-8 people outside of each....too lazy to wait in line for a half an hour....so I drove around and got some breakfast.
I'd rather not shop at an EB or GameStop, so I'm hoping for a situation like the 360s, where retailers unloaded some online. I'm too lazy, and too old at 30 to wait in line.

When I pre-ordered my PS3 at EB locally, they had 16 slots available for pre-orders...no more were going to be taken. I talked to the clerk, who is fairly knowledgable about things, and was told that they do expect to get the full 16 systems allotted unless something out of their control occurs, ie. the PS3 Fairy goes on strike. However, in the event that not all the systems were sent to their store, it would certainly be a 'get there first the day of launch' deal. They DO plan on doing the Midnight launch thing, as well.
All that had to be given was name/phone number/money at the EB I went to. They are hoping you will also reserve a game for 5 bucks, but no one was doing that where I was at.
Also, I have info from another source (guy who works with distributors) that there are about only 400,000 units being shipped for the Xmas rush, which will basically be gobbled up by the big box stores. Get ready for more Captain Insano lines and evil Skullduggery by those unfortunate enough to have to sit for hours waiting at BB/Target/WalMart. Perhaps BB will again try to shill $600 laptops to the ppl who don't get systems?

I didn't go... I knew I could've probably gotten on the list but I was afraid of what would happen on launch day. I know that I won't be able to get any friends or family to go with me and I'm not a big guy by any means. I'd definitely get jumped by someone.
I think I can wait a month or two to play it. I'll have Gears of War and LoZ to keep me busy.
